Thanks for creating a spec thread!

Please be sure to include answers to the following questions so people can assist you quicker.

  • What is the purpose of your PC/laptop? (e.g. gaming, general work, 3D rendering)
  • What monitor resolution will you be using? (e.g. 1080p, 1440p, 4k)
  • What is your budget including currency symbol? (e.g. £2,000, 1000€)
  • Which country are you purchasing from? (Note that we only operate in the UK and Europe)
  • Any brand preferences?

Or is this a different machine

This is technically a different machine, I have revised the quote I ordinally made with this one, I am just waiting for a reply currently on the other thread and wanted to expand my search for advice so I am asking here too

# narrow cape What is the machine for? What's your budget? What resolution will you be using?

Hi, I am a Creative Media Student in my second year, the majority of my work is animation and VFX, using programmes like Blender, Unreal and a lot of Adobe software. The max budget is £4800 and I'd want a 4k resolution monitor. If you want to be up to date on other things then please go to my PCS Forum thread. I just want to see if I can get some opinions about my latest spec. https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/saved-configurations/amd-am5-pc/SFgZuvYYvg/

Oki doke - I would be tempted to switch to Intel for the work you're doing as it generally performs better than AMD in productivity software. The 4090 you already have in there, which is the king of 3D rendering. You wouldn't need the 1500W PSU for 1 x 4090 so you can comfortably drop that down to 1000W. You're also paying a big premium for the ProART motherboard and would get just as good performance from one of the cheaper (but higher end) boards.

#

Also no need for the paste with the Corsair cooler - they come with a very good thermal pad on them. I use the H150i with my 13900k 🙂

#

I took the faster 6000HZ RAM (changed from the 6400 in the screenshot above) over the 5600HZ as it was within your budget 🙂

I appreciate what someone said in the forum thread about Intel's platform vs. AMD's.. as it's true, there will be another generation of CPUs for the current AMD platform whereas there wont with Intel. However I stand by my suggestion for the now, that the 14900k is the better productivity CPU.

Thank you so much for that insight, sorry for the late reply, but that's all really helpful, just a couple questions though, being that I will be using a ASUS ProArt monitor, would there be any benefit to pairing that with the ProArt motherboard as you mentioned, I know you said it was dearer than other high end boards but I just don't really understand the difference if if there'd be a difference at all. Also when someone gave the advice about intel, specifically the i9-14900k they said that it runs at incredibly high temperatures as well. I am not that familiar with the AMD Vs Intel CPU's but I do know that using more cores like 24 compared to 16 from the AMD would be more beneficial, I'm just trying to wrap my head around the pros and cons, previously I have always swayed towards intel but getting that advice made me weary and being that this is alot of money I want to make the right informed decision for the long run keeping in mind the work I will be doing on the machine. Also with the thermal paste is it completely irrelevant if the cooling comes with it already, if so I'm confused as to why it wouldn't say that when proceeding.

I completely understand how confusing it can be - especially when people have differing opinions.

I would have to compare the spec of the ProART vs. the Strix - but I imagine there will be little difference between them and it won’t make it any more compatible with your proART monitor 🙂

It’s right that the 14900k will run hot when pushed.. I have a 13900k like I mentioned and it does run hot when it’s running at 100% (exporting video for example), but the temperatures still don’t hit worrying levels (mid 80s to early 90s). The h150i keeps it cool the majority of the time (as low as 35 when just doing standard creative cloud work).

Oh that's really interesting, so I am more likely to get the most from intel then considering the majority of my tasks will be on the creative cloud and rendering based softwares like Blender and Unreal. Thank you so much for making that clearer for me. One other question I have, something I just noticed between a couple of the cooling options, if I got the H150i Elite LCD XT RGB (£211) would that £29 difference just be for aesthetics because it seems like the same model?

Basically yeah - I understand people’s reservations about recommending Intel as the 14900k won’t be upgradable on the same motherboard come next gen.. whereas AMD will be. But as a current PC without considering a future CPU upgrade, the 14900k is the better performing for productivity tasks.

As for the cooler, pretty much aesthetics 🙂 that one has an LCD cooler so you can have it display temperature in real time or put a GIF on it (I have a dancing cat :P).. basically a bit of a gimmick. It will cool the CPU in the same way.
