Today on VCAW-99 server I noticed grabbing a 3-wire but was graded a 4. Other pilots have seen 3's visual but graded 2.

So paddles cannot hook in directly into DCS in the way needed to see which wire was physically caught.
It uses quite a few factors.
The best results happen when using the ingame check-in with the boat/lso cause you get the the wire by the LSO inside DCS.
That is accurate and is then used.
If you don't use the coms menu (because also I find that a hassle) the bot uses some ML model I trained (with minimal data) to guess the wire.
It's not accurate, but hopefully I can retrain it later to make it better.
