Reinstalling a rebuilt engine in a skid steer. Using excavator as a fancy engine hoist. I think this was around 3 years ago
Ooh that looks like all kinds of fun
And I presume you were the one operating the excavator based on the picture lol
Correct.
Assorted pictures of messed up stuff. Including the skidplate from my own car!
Didn't realize you were a heavy equipment operator. I've never been in anything bigger than a bobcat.
Mostly mechanical. Have done a ton of part time and odd job operations from grading, making private driveways and ponds, etc. but mostly just stuck to working on cars RV's and equipment. that particular excavator was brand new and bought by the local city water dept and shipped to us for final assembly and some add on fabrication like armored windows, better lights, and some hydraulic mods so it could use a wide variety of tools on the quick connects and protect the operator from debris doing demo to get to water pipes in town.
but while I had it in the shop and done with testing trials and assembly checks why not use it.
Hey, it ain't stupid if it works
Some of my pics from when I was a mechanic.
Bonus video
I'd probably have more if I wasn't so pissed at my former job all the time.
To be fair, there are times where the job sucks but something comes up that makes the whole day so much better.
Plus I'm often times just pushing car after car after car I don't have time to take pictures or videos.
Here's some relics from back when I worked for Discount Tire.
And this is OIL that came out from a customer's car...we had to use a camera scope and pick to pull all of it out.
Final set of pictures for now lol
I ended up leaving the industry all together due to poor pay in my area.
Ah RIP. Yeah pay is enough to scrape by right now.
Got stuck after frozen hell came over because of this shit
Lady was out driving in these terrible roads to get her hair done...
Slid out of control into a curb, ol' ball joint gave out after 12 years.
Here we see a failed chip repair
Ouch, we don't do much glass involved work so I assume it's a tricky process.
Blast from the past. First 2 images a dudes lawnmower caught fire while it was on his trailer. The video was from an inspection being done on an F-450.
Also, someone say rust?
Chip repairs is just following a guide and letting the machine do its work. The real skill is in changing out windscreens. Especially when the glue snaps all your wires and the windscreen needs kicking out
Case and point
Jesus couldn’t save the windscreen. Now I’m not saying I’m Jesus, but there’s an argument.
Looks better then it did before. Jesus will just have to deal with it.
@elder lion How many people tell you "Well, there's still a crack there."
That’s why we tell them beforehand it won’t disappear entirely but is structurally sound
Good thinking.
"Ma'am this isn't magic, this is physics. And physics doesn't give you a helping hand just cause you ask it to."
“You want a clear windscreen? We can put a new one in for a grand.”
Cost of repair always shuts 'em up real good. 😆
I remember a dude with a '94 firebird who wanted us to check the voltmeter and made sure it was working properly. Dude never drove it so it was always on a battery maintainer and seem to never be ready to start up. So, for some reason it led him to believe something was wrong with the voltmeter in the car.
We checked it and it was working normally, gave it back to him and the guy said that he didn't believe us.
So, we told him if he wanted us to replace the voltmeter in the dash it would involve ripping the entire dash out on a car with old ass easily breakable plastic that was unavailable and if available, very expensive.
He took his car after that.
That’s always the kicker
People always seem to think that the people who work on their car are just looking for excuses not to do the work.
Sometimes it's true, and we are just sending it to a shop with a higher capability than what we can deal with.
Other times it's like; "Sir...your frame is litterally rotted out to the point of if I try to lift it it's going to crack down the middle like a hotdog bun!"
We get that at the other branch in my city, they can’t do ADAS coz they don’t have the room, so we always get the modern cars with actual safety systems since we have the room to recalibrate them.
Not the prettiest but got there in the end
Hell of a lot better!
We don't do a lot of rust/body restoration. Mostly we do it when working on exhausts.
Yeah, this is how the setup looks at this very second.
(And yes...that is a scan tool ontop of the matco box...)
Ooh, they look about the same size as my buddies storage box.
They ain’t bad
Only sad thing about those sizes of carts/boxes is that some of the more useful long handled wrenches don't fit inside them.
Ex A.
Thankfully I only have about a 4 inch shaft to worry about (giggity) on the biggest wrenches at work. Or spanner’s, for that matter.
Yeah we don't have the luxury of smaller tools.
The shops lead tech has a adjustable wrench taller than me, fits up to 65mm bolts.
Blame Peterbilt apparently.
I’m mostly dealing with 14mm bolts holding wipers on, and a tiny spanner. Unless some evil sod has put loctite on there. Then we break out the average sized tools.
This is one of the extensions I regularly use...
I'm ~5'10" for reference.
headbolts on those big engines are no joke. we had a 1 inch socket set and 8 feet of bar to get the torque/angle down perfect on the bolt patterns. still have to have a solid mount to keep from twisting the engine and stand on the ground.
some of these engines one cylinder was the displacement of the average car engine
Our more impressive tools are the specialised ones for getting windscreens out, glue stripped away and stuck wipers off, that looks like a heavy duty wine cork remover
I don't remember much from my time interning at Cummins but I remember we had an overhead crane capable of picking up my car just for the the engines.
Huh, I'm kinda interested in how this whole glass repair process looks now.
I'm used to being dirty and gritty in suspension parts.
It’s basically a big string on a wrench. Poke it through the seal, make sure it’s not caught on the aperture and wind.
Carglass Portugal. Funnily enough the exact same kit we deal with.
Ferramenta criada pela Belron® Technical, para a remoção do Pára-brisas.
There’s a whole 40 step process to doing it “correctly”
However, this is New Zealand. We do what’s easy and what works.
Looking at my tools and trying to process what process and precision is XD
That's a 6 lbs hammer BTW XD
Yeah, nothing suspension related is super precise.
Goddamn, can't even tell it was there without the previous image.
Had one yesterday where on show off we had to look and we’d done the damn job
I don't think precision would've gotten this hunk of junk off sadly.
Hit the right spot enough and off it goes!
20 minutes of wailing on it with the big sledge finally got it loose enough.
Gotta love the welding properties of rust!
Oh hell yeah!
If we have something that’s particularly stuck, like a mirror boss, we’ll break out the heat gun.
Oh, we don't have a heat gun
Blowtorch?
We have a heat NUKE
Hehehehehe
Can't be tight if it's a fucking PLASMA!
At that point you ain’t asking for it to come loose.
Heat gun, Induction coil, torch. The holy trinity of make it not stuck escalation
If a heat gun don’t do it we just get a hammer and the grinding wheel.
Correct, If it gets to the torch it's becoming a liquid one way or another.
We have an induction coil but it's beat up and arguable more dangerous than the torch.
Did learn the importance of using Kevlar gloves when cleaning up glass yesterday. Had just come from using glass cleaner which melts our slash proofs.
Got the glove instead of me, thankfully.
But these are at home this week for the motorbike course. Not at work for the next 10 days.
Why not both
It's I bring my work gloves to and from work.
That way any kind of at home DIY work I have my gloves with me.
Knowing me they’d be forgotten normally hahaha
Which here is my lead techs/mentors setup
Walking past it and figured I'd get a picture for reference.
And every drawer is FILLED
Dang. Impressive.
Dude has worked in this industry for 40+ years.
Our senior tech has been in for about that, absolute genius.
But Belron law means he has the same gear as the rest of us
Belron Law?
Parent company. They provide all tools and equipment
Oohhh I see.
Yeah, we are just contracted by the company technically. So all of our tools are ours.
Aha. We’re direct employees so they buy the safety gear I get to keep.
Oh, the company buys all our safety gear. But our tools we procure ourselves
When you're in the rust belt, precision is no longer a thing. 😞
I've got a twenty pound sledge for when I stop caring about my safety and safety of others and JUST. WANT. THAT. FUCKING. THING. OFF.
We have a "ton rated air hammer" we have in case the 20 lbs sledge fails us.
And if the air hammer ultimate ugga dugga doesn't work...
USE MORE UGGA, MUTHAFUGGIN, DUGGA
Former co-worker of mine liked to invest in 3/4 drive tools even though we only worked on passenger cars where normally 1/2 drive was the most the engineers expected you to have to use.
Yeah, we have a few 3/4 tools but not too many yet
Depending on if I can convince my Grandfather to hand me down the rest of his old big rig tools I'll have quite a few.
Timing belt, water pump, clutch. First time pulling an engine. So far so good. Having a good time at least
That's what's great about being a mechanic.
When you have fun it goes fast
Yeah, I haven't had any sort of a fun project in a long time. I forget what it is like to have fun doing mechanic things.
I've become particularly enamored with and specialize in electrical diagnosis and I haven't had the chance to do that in years. 😭
I know I made another forum for it but didn’t know this existed guess this is vehicle related I. Sure it will buff out
I’m fine btw
Thats good to know!
Also, finally got this all set up. SnapOn's sucking on my soul rather than my wallet now
That celica was engine swapped and everything well engine swapped with the stock engine just a working version but still
Lots of love into it
Going round corner bit of understeer and then just lost control
60 into a tree
Dang that really sucks
Damn
I'd cry admittedly
I love getting this perfect.
Or...as close as what the customer wanted.
They wanted a "toe and go" rather than equalize everything
Nicely done
Gets the perfect alignment
Watches the customer take the car and go over the speed bumps in the parking lot at 20 mph.
That poor car
Next thing you know they come back an hour later asking for a refund because their car doesn't drive perfectly straight again.
I have designed the mechanics worst nightmare vehicle
Were you driving it when that happened?
Yea
Dang that really sucks
I’m fine
Calculated as a minimum of 4.7 gs and that’s if we stopped in 3 meters which is more likely to be 2 or even 1.5 At 2 meters it’s 7gs and in 1.5 it is 9gs so minimum of 4.7 and more likely to be around 7 as a low number.
Wow. Thats insane
G forces of an impact are higher than many people realize. I could be wrong but I remember reading that something along the lines of a 15 mph impact headon is the equivalent of about 1.5-2G
Yea
Would have been way higher since I hit three small trees instead of 1 big one so stopping distance was longer
You just gotta say the magic words.
"You will come out of there quietly, or you will die trying to stay in there."
Quite literally what we did To get engine out
Nice
Nice!
@solid path I don't think you've even realized I made this place lol
I did not
On lunch break now
All 3 bays are filled with cars waiting for parts
HAHAHA kill me @crisp mesa
Now I wait and fart around pretending to be busy
Story of my fuckin life!
Because I could NEVER be sitting down, they'll be like hurr durr find sumthin to do
HOW BOUT YOU GIVE ME SUMTHIN TO DO
Best way I've found to fuck with management when they get uppity like that; look up ASE study guides and look at those on your phone when they get close. They'll leave you alone
lol
That's always a hoot.
Management "You're not doing anything"
Me - Looks at the almost fully disassembled cars in both of my bays.
Yeah
literally ligma
How do you guys keep track of where ever bolt goes? Me being a rookie DIY mechanic used plastic bags that were labelled. It worked but got cluttered fast
a plastic tray with like 500 holes, you can put them in a specific pattern, I'll show ya
DIY projects tend to go on a longer time table then professional jobs.
I pretty much remember where every bolt goes because I literally took it out a couple of minutes or hours ago.
If I have to come back to it a day or two later I wont remember.
Yep
There's a lot more repetition of the same jobs over and over again too.
I have a "good" memory. In that if I was using my hands I will always remember it. But heaven forbid I just read about it.
And yeah, practice/repition is key
"Can you save my backing plate?"
Thanks for the advice. I think that plate has at least 5 more years in it
Destroying stuff is always fun.
Former coworker of mine had to break into a Buick Cascada through the back cause there was a malfunction of the folding roof mechanism that prevented normal access to something he needed to get to.
I remember hearing the phone call to the engineers.
"Yeah, you're going to have to break something to get in there."
I know if I get the greenlight to break something, many switches are being hit in my brain.
That is very true
I went full on primal with that shit.
Ripped and tore until it was done.
I'm a mechanic. Breaking shit off is part of the job
Too late, I already bought two in my lifetime.
Ouch. Gotta love it when companies make bolts impossible to remove without removing other unrelated parts
You’d love vehicle glass then.
I heard rumor than on some Audi you need to remove the dash to remove the windshield.
And most VAG models the doors coming off to replace door glass. Mini’s, some models we basically pull out the front half of the car since the doors don’t have trims around them.
It’s uh, yeah. There’s some interesting ones. And any car with a spoiler above the back window.
Well I got the car started for the first time in 2 weeks today! Unfortunately there are weird noises. I have my guesses but let me know what you think. Thanks
Reminds me of when we did fuel injection and valve cleaning.
The valve cleaning was a warranty procedure for GM vehicles for a while.
You'd hook up a special atomizing injector into the air intake and spray a whole bottle of that crap in.
Then when you went to go drive to get the crap out. You'd smoke up the entire outside of the shop.
I found out what it was, the engine we replaced had problems so bad that coolant leaked straight into the engine, thats what caused the smoke
Got to work on an Acura RSX...why Acura...
yup
Ooh yeah. That's the stuff.
Haha, yeah. There was an official recall for GM cars a while back. They had us filling in the slots in the keys so that they would only be little holes and had us telling the customers to remove all of the excess keys.
Otherwise the weight of all that crap could slam down on the key during certain situations and turn the ignition away from on while you were driving.
Then there's the guy that comes in complaining that his key doesn't fit in the ignition anymore. Key's all twisted out of shape from all the crap hanging off of it.
Sometimes people espouse convenance over basic f*ing physics.
Holy crap. And I thought the stupid fuzzy pink steering wheels (or any loose steering wheel covers) and shifters was stupid
Anything that can potentially get in the way of safely controlling the vehicle is stupid.
Another thing that grinds my gears is when people hang a crap ton of shit from the rear view mirror.
Honestly, I started tuning out the time frame when listening and made up my own thoughts when I saw it.
When you hit 70 hours for the week. 40 hours of work picked up in 1 day. And nothing I'd in the bays aside from non-ops
Creeper seats. Best thing ever.
When I saw everyone picking up the vehicles I worked on all show up damn near at the same time;
Only about $1,200 for the week after taxes.
I take it that's hard to patch
Suction cup slipped off while installing. Many explicits were said.
Got this to repair too
How does that even happen?
Glass is weird
Yep...it happens to me aswell.
Lol nice
One of my former co-workers who was one of the diesel techs had diesel oil splash around his eye. He looked like he was wearing eyeliner for weeks.
OOH I HAD THAT HAPPEN AT MY JOB BEFORE LAST.
It burned every time I showered because diesel oil doesn't come out, come off, or go away.
I STILL SMELL LIKE DIESEL WHEN WEARING CERTAIN SHIRTS.
Yeah, it sucks.
The service writers are sitting there wondering why no one wants to do this oil change on a diesel truck.
Work on a diesel sometime, you might understand why.
Oh, all our service writers were techs at some point. Well, except our service manager...he worked at a Chevy factory building diesel Silverados for 20 years before working here lol.
I didn't get that luxury. I had one guy who was a tech for 5 years and he was an asshole.
The other three either had no tech experience whatsoever or only worked on personal cars.
Actually it was mostly GM product because it was a GM dealership.
employee discounts and such.
Ahh...even worse
My favorite service writer was an older dude who drove a relatively old chevy truck. He's the only one who worked on his own cars, I think.
Then there is the former tech who had the most service writer experience, but did everything he could to make sure the customer was pleased even at the expense of his own guys.
Oooooh we had a MF like that. He didn't last long
We buried him in a used diesel oil drum
He made the most money out of the service writers, dude knew what he was doing, but it made him unpopular with us to say the least.
For instance, If there was a discrepancy with a 3rd party warranty company on a jobs hours. He would take the warranty company's rate every single time. The other service writers would make the customer pay the difference, or at least, they would if they thought the customer would be willing.
Competition glass company did the last job. There’s not supposed to be a hole there in case it leaks.
I hate Novus with the passion of 1000 suns. The glue was wrong, the stickers were shit
Lookin, good.
Much better than when it came in that’s for sure
Hmm
Fuck reverse mount wheels.
Customer got shitty with us about how we were just trying to scam him and not do the work.
NAH, ITS BECAUSE WE VALUE OUR LIVES MORE THAN YOUR CARS DUMBASS ACCESSORIES.
How do you scam someone by not taking their money? 🤔
Tell you what, we want to go home early today. It’s lunch time now, we had 20 jobs on the schedule and there’s 3 left to do. Two of them haven’t turned up yet.
Hot tip, never ever silicon a windscreen in. We can’t glue to it without needing a panel beater to strip it completely back to metal
Was that a DIY job before or something?
Oh god, they just wanted it sealed properly without a new windscreen?
No they wanted a new windscreen too
They said “oh just try your best” to which we just went “nah”
Problem is, even if we scraped all the silicone off it’s still impregnated into the paint, so priming the surface wouldn’t work, like normal, the urethane wouldn’t stick, like normal, and if they were to crash and the passenger airbag go off, it’d pop the windscreen out. We don’t want any part of that.
Oh, I see. Yeah, I wouldn't want any part of that either.
The company will always back us up on stuff like that when we refuse, so that’s also good.
A sign of a good workday
Just pack some more dirty grease and rust dust in there
I had one once had completely divorced over a speedbump, they figured out how to pry and lift it back in and half a roll of ducktape later made it my problem 😆
Tried that, that's what the orange liquid oozing out of the joint is
worked on a driveshaft that wobbled and made a noise, can you guess what the problem was?
loose nut
Nope, 2 more guesses
engine/trans mounts? Not sure lol
oooooone more
Lack of wd40
needle bearing was BENT because they DIDNT INSTALL IT CORRECTLY
was awful, seen it before actually
That sounds painful
It fucking was, I knew it was that because I tried to put the joint to the ball and it wouldn't fully go in
It sucked
Reason #4,802,209 not to get a Tesla
Pretty much.
The windscreens are horrendous too. Most of the time they arrive broken and they’re packed in a wooden pallet.
oh that SUCKS
Whenever I see a Tesla pull into our lot all of us in the shop instantly just breakdown like;
We push them back as far as we possibly can
Tesla’s are sonsofbitches to get screens out of. Tolerances are tight, cameras are shit, the clips break the wire so we need to use literal steel wire and not scratch the car
And Teslas scratch with ANYTHING
I accidentally scratched a tesla with an OIL JUG
AND SOFT RUBBER OIL JUG SCRATCHED A TESLA
Oh and the guy left it in valet mode where you can’t get the frunk open….
This is why we have a clause in our shops work contract that people sign saying they can't lock the vehicle in Valet mode for our safety and in order for repairs to me effectively.
We just called him and he unlocked it
For fucking what?
To get the wire under the windscreen
Normally it’s just remove the scuttle guard and wipers…. But on a Tesla
it's never easy
pray you never do
Fun
Driving 2007 mondeo and it makes it’s alert sound then says stop lamp bulb fault so I get out and sure enough the right ones blown
Fancy ass car
As we where making good time for 2 hour drive out to plane museum to beat the rush hour traffic we are arriving an hour late now and gonna probably catch the traffic so that sucks
Tell that to the laser alignment guys and watch their faces 🤣
What do you think I spend most of my days doing
Rust belt work means dealing with enough rust to make earth turn into mars
And aligning something with that much rust is a task where precision is out the window
You know I think these alignment numbers were made when the car wasn't made out of rust.
Case in point
It's like when customers complain I didn't get everything in the green.
"First off, just sitting under your car is a health hazard from all the rotting frame, the dead raccoon in your driveshaft, and the atrocious amount of weed I smell. 2nd, your car is so rusty I'm pretty sure if I adjusted anything more than than this it'd snap off and you'd be angry I broke it!"
(Actual statement I told a customer)
"My uncle has been a mechanic for 40 years, he can do this alignment much better then you can."
"Then why did you bring it here?!"
I think my service manager would have to hold me back if that was said to me in a condescending way.
Yeah. If I have to break out the rachet straps, a torch, giant prybars, or any combination of the three, in order to get shit to move. I doubt your uncle can do any better.
Don't forget the 20 or 40 lbs sledge
"Break glass in case of emergency, and/or you've hit your bullshit limit"
I've thought about installing one of those with a 10 gauge shotgun above my craftsman box with the inscription;
"For matters of extreme inconvenience"
In todays glass repair gospel: if at first the chip doesn’t fill, make it bigger and try again.
Ah yes, break shit to fix shit
That should just be the mechanic motto
"To fix shit, one must first break shit. But sometimes, you have to break it more to fix it."
I finally got both of my bays to myself. They're both a little scuffed (red one, up button goes down. Down button goes up.) And the yellow one I can only put high ride height vehicles on.
But I no longer have to walk all the way down to the other end of the shop to work on vehicles. So now I work closer to my box.
Degrees freedom?
Yep, those are degrees freedom. Kinda chill at only 78
Bigass truck came in for an alignment
The forbidden milkshake
Customer stated; "heard pop while driving on freeway"
Never seen absorber oil so I finally got to see forbidden choccy milk
Just found this in a industrial park near me ricciardo number to
On this episode of just rolled in
Funny enough I actually sent that in XD
Heck yea
Mercedes are great at putting sharp metal on the bottom of the windscreen. That’s why we have slashproof gloves.
If you can see the Kevlar they’re doing their job 😅
Gotta love it when the customer lies about what truck they have..."oh I have a Chevy 1500 it'll be fine." sees a Chevy 3500 dually with a dump bed pull up
"FUUUUUU-"
Gotta break out the creeper just to get a damn .4 hr ticket
Good old VW’s.
Just hit 1000 miles which means the rev limiter can finally come off 😄
Had to squeeze a few road trips in there
Good man.
I paid for the whole tach, I wanted to use the whole tach as fast as possible 😄
When I get my motorbike it’s gonna get the same treatment
It's a screamer too up past 6k
Contest?
I wanna use all 14,000rpm damn it
It’s almost helpful having two tiny pistons
321cc
Nice, good place to start from what I can tell
Absolutely
I wanna get a bike but I know I wouldn't last long if I did 😂
Bikes are fun!
Snap on?
Yep!
And I only paid 1k for a brand new box because I traded in the Matco box
That's normally a 15k box.
For an idea of just how GIANT this absolute unit of a box is, compared to my old Matco box from a similar angle.
Oh nice!
I have the 2 top drawer version of that box. She's served me nicely.
Since I traded on the matco box;
About $1k on truck
Which is nothing in the scheme of things
I'm sorry, but I need that double middle finger sticker for my back window. That way the people constantly tail gating me know what's up.
It’s had some fantastic stickers on it in it’s time.
I can tell it's a beater lol
Tbf I treat mine like dirt because I know it can take it
He has three cars, that ones not road legal at all, it’s put on a trailer and taken to shitbox rally’s
Just got back from taking the 86 out for it's first proper shakedown, and what an absolute blast of a car it is
Got it out on some backroads, and it absolutely rips
Hell yeah
Even managed to get a few good heel-toes in here and there... I think I'm doing alright for 2 weeks driving stick 😄
I dont think I'll ever be able to go back to a normal auto after this
The third pedal is just so much fun
I think maybe I'd be able to be convinced by some really high end race gearboxes but those are out of my price range for the foreseeable future 😅
Yes please 🙏
I can’t wait to take my bike on it.
I was just doing this one that follows the river, so not quite as fun but definitely good enough for a first go
Oh absolutely. Definitely enough corners!
Didn't wanna push too hard just in case there was ice since it's been below freezing for a week, but once it warms up I'll have to find some proper good backroads
Head up into mid Michigan or something for it
Once summer arrives you’ll be good
I was thinking more like next week, but yeah summer too 😂
Supposed to pop back into the low-mid 40s which should be enough to get everything melted away
Yalls roads are way nicer lmao
I wish I had some mountain twistys but Michigan is flat as a board
I mean, half of it looks like this
Best I got are some backroads in a place called Hell
That sounds…. Fun
(Not kidding about that either lmao, and yes it does freeze over regularly)
So now we’re just waiting for pigs to fly
Y’all have some funny place names
My drive to work goes on mountain twistys compared to everywhere else
Jealous lol
My old commute had its fun bits, but it was all flat through farmland
Empty farmland with no traffic mind you, but not exactly what you'd call scenic most of the time 😄
I mean, we have those too, between Hamilton and Thames is flat so the roads are straight and empty
2022 Nissan Altima, 6k miles on it. First oil change and this customer has destroyed both front tires already.
Is anyone even remotely surprised by that? Seems 100% par for the course for a new altima
Speaking of oil changes, it's BS that my local dealer said it'd take over an hour to get the oil done on my car right? I feel like I could probably do it faster and I've never even done it before
That depends on how busy they are. Your ticket might be sitting for a little while before they even get to it.
Depends how quick you could get it off the ground and on Jack stands really. After that it’s a 20 minute job.
Not really. Gotta check stuff under the hood and make sure it's in check. ~10 minutes.
Get the lift situated and lift vehicle, ~2 min
(Get any kind of skidplate off, if equipped; ~5-20 min depending)
Drain all oil and get old filter off and new one installed properly, then make sure drain plug is torqued to spec. ~30 min.
Lower vehicle and add oil. ~2-5 minutes (depends on how much oil is needed)
Reset oil life and put a sticker in your window; varies from .5 min to 10 minutes if there is a complicated procedure or if there's a line for the sticker machine.
And Toyota Gr86s have a pain in the ass skid plate that I'd say rivals the Toyota Tundra and Hummer for pain in assery. Barely beating out BMW, Audi, and VW by sheer weight.
Also, this came in for an Alignment and I'm the only guy in the shop who can do alignments today...fml
And this is why I’m getting a motorbike.
Motorbikes seem simpler at first. Then you get into them and realize you've just gotten yourself into an even bigger issue than a car.
If you’ve gotta update valve timings or anything, yeah.
Although, just pull out the motor. It’s like 100kgs.
Fair enough. But the tires. Oh lord the tires get expensive fast.
You're welcome XD
(I work for Bridgestone-Firestone)
Ah that makes more sense. They’re cheap Michelins, and they last for ages
AYO WHO TF TAC WELDED THEIR JAMNUT TO THEIR INNER TIE ROD
My reaction upon seeing that.
Ayo @trim hemlock and @solid path check this shit out
Get the grinder out then lad
Ok yeah just forgot about the skid plate 😅
Well thanks for the info yall 😄
That looks... less than ideal
Its what we're here for!
Hmm, I could be wrong but I think that might be weld splatter rather then an actual tac weld, picture isn't quite clear.
Can’t be stuck if it’s melted.
In any case a welder probably shouldn't be anywhere near that part, esp not close enough to get splatter on it 😅
You'd be suprised what people think is a good idea to try and weld back together.
my life
I've seen people try to weld engine blocks back together
We could make that into a game show
"Weld my life!"
generic game show music
Oh God...it's much worse. So what I took a picture of was weld splatter.
It came off of them welding the other side of the jam nut I cant get a good picture of.
THERES ALSO WELDING TO THE STRUT WHAT THE FU-
In my line of work that’s when we give the car back and say “nope”
It's clockout time anyway
I'll leave that for the poor sod who has to open tomorrow
Ahaha fair
There's shitboxxing. Then there is actively making your car dangerous to drive.
That thing was the latter.
Alright! Clocked out and now to make the hour drive home.
queue the epic driving montage music
Shitbox is a crappy daily that’s almost safe to drive.
Finally home!
Nice!
Gotta do a quick game beta test for a friend then I'll continue on the creation of the ||CLASSIFIED|| Course.
Level-Headed People Be Like 🚶 #shorts #walking #parkour
Saw this and figured yall might get a good kick outta it too
Oh that's hilarious
Dude has a jeep suspension with the way he crossed the trampoline
Is that a discount?
Japanese parking ticket. It had slipped under the windscreen
Goddamn
So they got a ticket and couldn't get to it? Or was it just in between the dash and wind screen?
You couldn’t reach it without taking the screen out
Vehicle was a Land Rover Discovery
Ahhh, usually I can just reach my tech driver in between the dash and windshield to reach something if it falls into that gap.
Never had to do it on a land rover though
Horrendous cars
Oh I turn them away every chance I can
Unfortunately I used to live in Europe
So anything vaguely European at work comes my way
Gonna get the fake engine noise turned off on the 86 today
Can't wait to hear what it actually sounds like
Range Rover lugstuds swell up worse than a Fords. The studs themselves have a bad habit of breaking off. The oil drain plugs are a nightmare to reach, same with the filter. Their batteries are a pain in the ass to remove and replace.
Add a bigger exhaust 😉
(Also agreed, the only good British car is the AC cobra, but only after they stuffed an American big block in it
)
I can think of one other;
The old school Range Rover with a V12 Merlin in it...that thing was kinda cool
They used to make a good motorbike
When you say v12 merlin, is it the merlin merlin?
Like the spitfire merlin?
Yeah. They had a few leftover after ww2
I think there was also a few other makes using them
Yep, the actual GOOD merlin. (I'm counting the Packard Merlin as well because it's still really good)
We don't count the V8 Merlin 🤮
Good lord, talk about "ain't no replacement for displacement"
I'd imagine they were detuned substantially but it'd be hilarious if they weren't
Imagine a range rover with 2300+hp
||the bigger the block the bigger the cock||
Some crazy brits did put V12 Merlins in Range Rovers and VW Beatles tho
I've seen some of the one-offs, yeah. Bonkers machines
||P-47 and F4U Corsair Guys be like; :

Instant Camber adjustment 😛
Well, they quoted me 200 bucks to turn off the fake engine noise at the dealer, so instead I went to harbor freight, got a trim tool and some zip ties for $7 and I'm boutta do it myself
I did buy this car with the intention of learning to work on it, so I guess there's no time like the present to start, wish me luck
And I'm already done, took literally 10 minutes and half of that was just fishing the cable to a good spot to ziptie
Now that I turned the noise off I'm already looking into a new intake and a catback... I really gotta get a job fast so I can afford this stuff 😂
Welcome to the wonderful world of the money pit!
It's only downhill from here
Eventually I wanna supercharge it, but im gonna wait til it's out of warranty for that
HKS says you can pretty reliably get 350-400hp on stock internals with their kit, which would be pretty insane in a car that light
The kit costs like 6k tho, and with more power I'd probably also want to get wider wheels and tires, and maybe an aero kit too
But, that still puts you at some pretty impressive performance numbers for well under any comparable car's price
Probably 45k all in including the cost of the car, to match or beat power figures from a Z or Supra 3.0
Tame that go fast parts cannon, you'll likely invalidate your warranty on the car. You really should only be doing aftermarket stuff if you can afford to fix it later.
I've installed a couple HKS kits. I would aim lower on the top HP figure as you have a much wider boost range with supercharging vs turbo. also easier to tune to and much nicer on the piston rings. will still likely require bigger injectors and double platinum or better spark plugs. and the Stock tires on those are the same as what comes on a prius IIRC for the very low rolling resistance, which also means fairly low traction so better tires are a must if you'd like to not be sideways every time you hit the beans.
There's a reason I sold my 71 Camaro...a 632 CI with a 3L Supercharger is just too much power for practical stuff. Don't fall into the same pit with your 86
Take it slow, enjoy the lower end of that power figure for a bit.
I need to change the fuel tank in my NA miata...Someone please give me the inspiration I need to get off my ass and do it 😦
Get the agony out of the way so it hurts less later
Hmm. Looks like it needs some duct tape
Oh yeah, this is all plans for post-warranty. Car stays stock (maybe an exhaust at most) during the warranty for sure
Thankfully mine came stock with some nice PS4s but yeah, there are definitely some other things to think thru before I start wrenching on it
Got my new watch!
It's low profile so it's designed to be worn while working on cars.
Nice! I have my Apple Watch that seems to work okay
Just bought my first gadget for the car, it's a pedal commander throttle controller
Heard they make a huge difference for the 86 and they're less than 300 bucks, seems pretty worthwhile to me 😄
Hmm, I was about to say you got scammed, but this does seem to actually do something based on what I am looking at.
Gotta temper your expectations though. From, what I can see, it is essentially a gain controller for your accelerator pedal. It modifies the percentage input of the throttle pedal and sends that modified percentage to the ECU. Sort of like messing with the Saturation settings for your controller axis in DCS.
The hidden power and increasing MPG statements on the website are complete bullshit though.
Yeah, I know that the MPG and power stuff is a crock of shit, I'm purely buying it to mess around with the throttle response and make it a little snappier
But as far as that goes, it does what it says on the box. Basically just allows you to "tune the axis" of the electric throttle so to speak
Just about everyone who's reviewed one has said it works and in my particular car it makes a pretty appreciable difference in how the throttle feels
Sounds good, if you like it go for it.
Me personally, I don't touch that stuff even with a 40 foot pole. I have too much PTSD with other aftermarket junk causing major problems
Yeah, for now I'm gonna be pretty careful about what I put on the car and make sure everything I do is easily reversible
So, tonight I have learnt the edge of my tires performance is 140kph
Ruh roh
How'd you figure that one out? Sounds like it may have come from some firsthand experience
Just a little bit 😅
Was late for dinner with the grandma in another town, about half an hour away. Was at the end of a passing lane and it started to feel a little squirrely, could do another 20-30k before anything too dangerous
Ooh it's always fun to ride that squirrly ride in SAFE settings.
Such as a racetrack. Not public roads.
Racing some friends on a local track for funsies in my grocery getter (2009 Hyundai Sonata)
Found the edge of controllable to be around 222kph (138 mph)
I found the edge of controllable to be around 60
The trees also found out
Too be fair I locked up
The hell condition were your tyres in
^^^^^^^
Probably could have saved it but didn’t swerve out of way
Rally tires on dirt + locked up brakes
Tight dirt track
They can go faster
I know cus I hit 90 at one point
But I crashed at 60
What grade of rally tire
Rally tyres should be mint on dirt
You’d almost expect that on road tyres, then again I can go faster than that on mine
Tire
It was old car no traction control no ABS mainly my fault
Nothing to do with tires
I did do a nice catch through that corner earlier swerved to avoid tree and did a nice drift save throughout whole next corner
Hey Kraken
Ye
I reckon we could do better with no assists
It was tight track
I had no assists
Possibly. I drove a 71 Camaro with melted brakes and a broken chute lol
I learnt to drive in a ‘91 Ford Capri, no ABS or anything, took that on a rally stage and it did really well
Also drove an old school F-250 with a trailer with my grandfather up wolf creek pass a couple of years ago.
I was doing really well in my ‘95 celica no abs or anything I was doing autocross and doing really well till I crashed
I learnt to drive in that thing
Airbag+helmet=good
Very much so.
Learned how to drive automatic in a 2013 GMC Terrain.
Learned manual on my Grandfather's 60's era chevy truck.
Steep grade hills, gravel, and learning to shift with a three on the tree.
And harness
I learnt to drive in the paddock at my first rally event
Manual as well
Also being able to drift/power slide a FWD car.
Learned that one accidentally out of panic to avoid a crash
Same
in a FWD
turns out I’m quite good at saving the car in spins
I also learnt to drift in Melbourne with my dads friend who has a bunch of cars and stuff so learnt to drive in a shitbox falcon rwd
He has a car graveyard
He has a big field
And a sort of track
Depends. FWD can work against you when you over currect
Yea but I didn’t
But you can't undercorrect either
Undercorrect = add more power
I personally find RWD to be easier to drive
My dads friend told us seriously turn right to go left
I nearly rolled it by failing to drift and going down a decent bump but I kept it under control and saved it
It’s exhaust fell off cus of the drifting so we just kicked that into a bush
We then ran out of fuel and left it in the field
Walk of shame back
RWD certainly more fun
Got to do an oil change on this behemoth.
1991 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale
L a n d b a r g e
And on this episode of Jerry Rig glass repair, we didn’t want to spend 2 hours on a vehicle.
Not quite our normal car-related stuff, but I spent all afternoon today making a bluing tray out of some brass sheet metal
Considering I didn't have any proper tools and did the entire thing with only a dremel, a torch, and 2 sets of pliers, I think it came out pretty well:
Had to go borrow some sand from a volleyball court since the beach was closed and I didn't want to buy a 50lb bag of it, but after I get some hi temp JB weld in there I'll be all set for finishing parts!
Ooh, nice. I haven't done bluing before, but I've done tons of Parkerizing.
Yeah, parkerized is nice but I wanted to try something different
Plus the parkerizing oil we have isn't food safe
If I can get a color even remotely close to this I'll be thrilled, I took inspiration on how to do it from this guy and if you haven't heard of him I'd highly reccomend checking his stuff out
Clickspring is probably one of the best machinists/craftsmen on YouTube, his stuff is phenomenal
Also off topic, but I brought this.
Well, I suppose that's a good way to help you make up your mind lmao
Looks real clean!
Nice, that'd look pretty slick
Only problem is I gotta get the full license first coz the L plate would hit the wheel 😂
Speaking of car mods, gonna give painting my wheels a go tomorrow. Gonna be interesting to see how it goes, I'll have to get a before and after for yall
Hell yeah!
Oh funny story, rode from the dealership to work (500m) to put all my gear on to go home after picking up the bike, only then realised they’d forgotten the L plate
Which legally I need for about the next year
Yeah, definitely. The Pre-blackener stuff I have contains Antimony......
Glad you caught it lmao
Then in all my wisdom, missed the WOF which is also legal for anything on the road, it’s behind the rego sticker, on the swing arm.
I've given up on painting my wheels for now
Not turning out nicely, figured I'd quit while I'm ahead and return the remaining bottles of paint. Glad I got the peelable kind so I can undo it all lmao
Alright y'all, I need your help diagnosing something.
2008 Ford Escape. CC; "Right front Wheel made whirring noise, after driving briefly wheel was hot to touch and burning smell."
Took it on the test drive, couldn't replicate the noise but noticed steam from the RF wheel. Got back to the shop and took off the wheels. There is a small heat ring on the RF, the lower ball joint on RF is fucked beyond repair. And I'm fairly sure the wheel bearing may be bad now also from the amount of movement.
Is it just the wheel bearing causing the customer complaint or might it be something else mixed in? Or maybe not even the wheel bearing.
When I had fucked bearings it sounded like metal was grinding on metal constantly, but afaik the tires didn’t get that hot
I figured it out!
Bad brake hose. Forcing the rear pad to be constantly applied, but not enough to drag, just enough to cause heat.
Sweet!
Bit of steel wool she’ll be right
She's warped also so sadly that won't fix it
Also, the customer denied the fookin ball joint wth
Check that shit out
This stuff is beautiful at dissolving peel coat but goddamn if it isn't some of the nastiest stuff I've ever had the misfortune of needing to use
Oooh shit. I hope that area is well ventilated
I've been sitting next to a wide open sliding door since it's pouring freezing rain outside
Bundled up in 2 layers of jackets and pants freezing my ass off, but im done and I survived
Shit kept melting through my nitrile gloves, seriously nasty stuff
What?
The glass covering my arm
Oh yea ouch
Yeah, when using MEK you need to wear a nitrile glove with a latex glove over top. Or just layer the nitrile ones a lot. At least that's what my shops lead tech told me.
Check your filters guys!
"Just blow it out and put it back."
- literally anyone you try and sell a filter to.
What I have to do to my own cars honestly...
And that's just because my manager is on vacation and he's the only one who can ring up and ring out employees with the discounts.
(This is the CAF from my personal vehicle)

Good to know. I always thought you should avoid layering gloves but ill pick up some latex ones for next time
Usually you do, but in this case you just need that little bit extra protection.
Land equivalent to the USS Nevada...
THESE THINGS JUST REFUSE TO DIE
Let the misery begin
Good lad, always use jack stands+ a jack + spare wheels.
Fuck me
I've encountered a bolt my impact won't undo. This is the first time this has ever happened
1000ft lbs ain't enough reeeeeee
But then who'll put that rear end back in the car? what all are you doing to that Mazda?
Fuel tank replacement
So, rear subframe on an old ass car? My experience tells me you probably had a problem with either the exhaust or one of the subframe bolts.
Bolt from diff to the ppf wasn't coming so had to remove or all as one
And you know just typical socket disappearances, crawling around in impossible positions and many a bloody knuckle
Tiny un-zoomable instructions?
Oh they were zoomable
But technically you’re not supposed to unplug the camera.
You can, but if the key is too close it may wipe the security codes.
Ohh, yeah I don't fuck with the cameras on cars. I leave that for my lead tech.
19 jobs, 3 techs. What can go wrong, they say.
One of the scheduling people is leaving she doesn’t like us very much so made yesterday hell
And today we have 1 job per hour, with 3 techs in
Oh that sucks
And why is it always the girls who make shit difficult when they decide to quit?
Last time we had a woman quit at a shop I worked at she purposefully scheduled 32 appointments when it was just me working that day... I never even spoke to her because I worked a different shift 😦
Oh dang. The annoying part is, they’re shipping our scheduling guys out around the work (international corporation) because our schedulers are the best
"I'm on a road trip. Oil light came on, been driving for 6 hours"
…. What oil
Ouch
Gotta love the arm melter 9000 right next to the filter
And I got 4 more of those in the span of 4 hours.
All fresh from road trips
My arm was like those dudes in Raiders of the lost Ark
That was being driven like that?
Yep!
And this is my worst nightmare also...
Because the shock has been separated from the strut when it drops that spring is going to go flying at Mach Fuck in any direction it damn well pleases.
Munted!
haha like spring compressors but more chaotic
Did you survive
Looks like someone’s done a professional DIY engine noise apparatus amplification job
I was drifting a old shitbox ford falcon around once and exhaust fell off kicked it in bush kept going then the fucking engine fell out
Like lost power stopped got out and just saw the engine hanging out the bottom
"Front fell off" vibes.
Good ol’ Aussie build quality 😉
To be fair it was from like 1980
And was being beaten around constantly
I think 300 000 on the odo
I change the windscreens. They’re the worst
Only just run in man!
Dingo stole my exhaust!
1981 ford falcon lightly used driven by old lady in good condition $5000
Dingo probably did steal it after we kicked it into a bush
Wouldn’t fit my Italian stallion unfortunately
Something involving a Sawzall by the look of things!
This is why glass techs hate minis, have to take off everything surrounding the screen, in and out.
I hate Mini's because they're just shitty cars in general
Razor blade.
Off to a good start today
I had a bandaid on it for all of yesterday for that exact reason
Today it’s just a red line thankfully
BMW Can't even make a BMW worth a shit. I never thought a pile of plastic trash would ever be so valuable.
or so difficult to work on. you're battery is .3 volts off of nominal. here's 40 module codes that never needed to exist.
Amen brother. What most manufacturers manage with 5 or so clips on the wiper cowling, BMW has about 20 T30 clips and it comes off in 3 parts.
YES! Why are BMWs so widely regarded as "good" cars? They're garbage.
Mercedes is a good a car. Sure they're PRICY but with that price you at least get quality
Simple, they don't have to work on them.
Basically just BMWs that failed QC
Hey we're twins now, I did the exact same thing a couple months ago 😂
I'd argue that BMW QC doesn't even exist.
Only the best mate!
So I shanked my thumb at work today
Had to call EMS because it was/is bleeding a lot.
Oh well done
Yep! Best part was when EMS had to use a big ass needle to flush the wound to avoid infection.
Got my car back on the road again, sacrificed my back for it though
Got a hearse in at work with a broken side window today…. That woulda been a surprise for the lowlifes that broke it!
Glass breaks:
That or someone was trying to break out 😉
Had to splice some wires back together after they got cut through 😅
Good man!
Customer: "Nah, she's alright, just park it."
Same car btw
Thing looks like its just been sitting.
sheesh. just push it outside and set it on fire.
yeah that had to have sit awhile somewhere after having already needed alot of work
Customer was last in here before winter. Only needed control arms on the lf
no way the rest goes that bad in a year unless they droved 50k thru road salt
@crisp mesa Someone else work on it last time?
or parked it somewhere extremely corrosive. that's to the point where the fix is more expensive than just getting something not totally trashed out.
Nope, customer declined repairs last time it was here
This thing only gained about 2k miles
@crisp mesa have you dealt with "Moveras" Transmissions at any place you've worked?
I don't believe I have no
they're like Jasper but actual dogshit customer service and warranty.
I just took a look at the video again. That exhaust looks like it was chopped off to me. Someone get their cat stolen?
sold it to pay for a control arm and some crack last winter 😆
They got it stolen during the Christmas winter storm apparently
Yep
That was my reaction
Scariest part about it to me is they drove it to us.
This thing was on the road with people's loved ones and children.
Looks like they could do with getting it stolen again.
Few weeks ago I bought a rebuilt 4EAT for my Forester, wiring harness was incorrect and speed sensors in the opposite holes they belonged in. and shorted out my TCM and I've spent 2 weeks just trying to get them to get my information right to start the warranty let alone pay for the TCM and a new wiring harness. till then I can't even get anywhere near boost cause the torque converter lockup and shifting goes nuts without any output speed sensor data.
Also, just felt something hit my back looked down then back up....some more just came off
Oh that fucking sucks
Oh dear god, that hole is just getting bigger.
fuel economy upgrade!
Please do, the back end is going to snap off any minute.
We have enough to patch the titanic back together why?
time to put the JB icing on the Rustoleum cake
JB Weld+Rustoleum+Bondo+Anti-Seize?
Eject, eject!
insert .gif of jeep launching off the lift and through the garage door.
I was thinking more like one of those air powered car cannons to emergency eject it off the lift.
I have never heard of those what the hell
Is that some fancy shit dealerships get lol
Ok, well, they don't use them to eject cars off of the lift...... lol.
Usually
I'm still curious about this lift air cannon
Unless it's just like a normal air blaster
Richard and James try their hands at recreating James Bond stunts...using cars as darts and a caravan as the bullseye.

Ah...shit...
It groaned. Heard a crunch.
Lift point has sunken another 2 inches into the frame
I'm terrified to lower this thing because it's sitting on the locks right now
Just do it, longer you wait, the more likely it is to fall off anyway.
OK, it's lowered down to a safer height.
Wheels are partially supporting the weight.
That was the most nerve wracking lower I have had in awhile
2nd only to the time we had a newer GMC Sierra 2500 slide on a Frame grabber and was being held up by like 1/8 inch of frame on one side
Ooh, I have some good stories on Heavy trucks on lifts.
Specifically, the lift that was used.
Oh boy
Usually heavy truck lifts are my preffered type of lift. But when they go bad it's BAD
Well, I worked at a GMC dealer, this dealer was around for a while so they were still using these old two piston lifts that had a piston under each axle of the truck.
It might be unfamiliar, I never seen these things anywhere else, and probably for good reason.
Let me see if I have a picture.
I do, give me a sec.
Ooh I found em I think
Something like that, yeah. Except ours was pretty unsafe.
Oh no
OH
This was me doing an engine swap on my Maxima, but the lift is in the background there.
It was essentially, just a parallel flange beam inside another parallel flange beam with no stops.
So, nothing was stoping the beam holding onto the axle from sliding out laterally.
Yeah I see it. We had one similar at the Firestone training center and it was...creepy... it would go up like 3 inches on one side then go up 6 on the other, and then 6 inches on the other and 3 of the last, repeat until done.
Actually, best part about ours was that each piston was individually controlled.
WAT
Also, there was only one lock all the way at the top.
Let me tell you. That's a lift you learn to respect.
I got pretty good at using it.
Can lift a Semi but it'll drop that Semi in a heartbeat XD
You're kidding...
But the guy next to me said he's lifted way heavier then that on it.
Oh yeah
Closest lift is rated to 10,000 lbs.
Yellow lift is permanently stuck at that height when lowered but it can handle up to 25,000
Only reason I say can handle is because that's the heaviest thing we've lifted with it.
I wish I had pics of the lifts I used to have for working on Class A RV's. basically 4 lifts that plugged into eachother with one of them being the control, think like a floor jack for wheels with a forklift sytle lifting mechanism and forks that worked like a tow truck roll back style hoisting a 48,000lb coach over your head.
That actually sounds quite nice
When I was getting my diesel maintence cert their semi truck lift was this 8 post behemoth that could lift the rig loaded trailer and all.
each of them weighed as much as a small forklift but you had to push it around the shop like an overloaded pallet jack. no fun
Holy ok less nice
and we could have fit 2 737's in that shop being it had 24 service bays that could hold any size RV, 2 paint and body bays, 4 detail bays, a parts warehouse and of course offices for middle management to do fuck all
Oh yeah
See our management are stuck in the shop with us. So if we catch them doing fuck all we conscript them into doing menial shit for us
I had one of our management guys sort my sockets between the 3 brands and their size+adapter size. Because it was dead but I was planning on organizing but I was working on brakes.
