#looking for advice to help improve my channel and content

So I have been making some videos for a little bit and they are doing good for how small I am on youtube and I am super happy about that but my retention rates seem to drop off pretty hard I would like advice on how to keep people longer I do know some people (me included sometimes) will click away due to the youtuber not having a ton of followers or views but I feel like my videos are pretty good quality at least enough to get me a little bit more retention any tips on how to make my videos more engaging? I am working on how I sound because ive been told I can sound monotone at times and its a bit of a turn off.

I'm not sure where exactly viewers are dropping but I can tell you what I personally think could be improved based on your most recent video:

  • I'd boost the volume; the video overall is much quieter than what is typical, to the point where maxing out the yt volume slider isn't enough with my audio settings. Also 2:40 is way too loud compared with the rest of the video.
  • Try talking in a bit of a louder voice. It's cool if you're going for the Casually Explained vibe, but at some points the VO verges on being "croaky" due to being recorded in such a quiet voice if you know what I mean by that. (Especially during the mom & doctor bit at 01:00 and at 02:16)
  • The metal pipe sound effect during the intro doesn't match up with the clip at all (it's a bit too early and liquid splashing doesn't make that kind of sound). I think if the thing that was dropping was at least explicitly solid that it would work better, but I don't think that's an option considering the intro itself.
  • The watermark on the character art is a bit distracting and makes the video feel cheap (I recognize that sometimes creators will use stock photos with the watermark as a form of humor, but I don't think this falls into that category). If you can get permission to remove it or have it removed, I would do that.
  • At 03:36, why not fact check before recording?
  • Try doing more takes while reading the script until you get the line just right. I'm noticing a bunch of individually minor hiccups that when combined over the course of the video reduce its perceived quality. (Ex. at 00:13: "No, but in [hesitation] all seriousness, I really miss YouTube [hesitation] Rewinds." and at 00:32: "They [pronounced like they're] still [hesitation] kind of [hesitation] bring a [extended w sound] warmth to my heart even [hesitation] to this day.")

  • I think I see what you're trying to do with Freakbob, but the way it's included often makes it feel out of place and just thrown in as an afterthought.
  • The bit at 04:34 overstays its welcome. I think cutting during one of the "I HATE YOU"s as a perfectly cut scream type thing would have been perfect. Also, don't do the whisper-yell. I'd either actually yell or find a different way to convey that emotion.
  • I like both visual styles a lot (primary character art vs mspaint scenes), but would recommend sticking to one style if possible to make the video feel more visually coherent.
  • Try to make the music loop smoothly rather than restarting at the beginning if you're going to keep the same track the whole way through. It was a bit distracting at 01:58 when it looped. I can explain how to do this well if you don't know how.
  • What feels like an end card commentary type thing starts at 05:16, with about 20% of the video remaining. I think a bunch of this could have been written into the main script. I would additionally try to reduce the number of pauses (um...'s and uh...'s) to a minimum. Also, you say you watched every YouTube rewind for this video, but you don't seem to talk about most of them during it.
  • Don't cover the whole screen with a low quality image unless there's a point to it like at 02:18 with the "YOUTUBE FOR CREATORS" image. (if it's a low quality meme, for example, and the shitty resolution adds to the humor). Otherwise it just lowers the quality of the overall video.)
  • The dissolve transitions are way too long and feel as if you're trying to extend them just to keep the video from being a still image at those points. Try experimenting with other kinds of animations!

I know a lot of what I had to say seems nitpicky, but while many of the issues I saw are minor on their own, they really do add up. Make sure to consider if what I'm suggesting fits with your channel vision, too.
I like the direction the channel is going and think it has a lot of potential. It sort of reminds me of Ice Cream Sandwich. Good luck with growing it! 🫡
Also I think I might be the only person on earth that actually liked rewind 2019 lol

No thank you for all of the advice I wanted you to be as blunt as possible cuz I want to improve not have someone just say I am and to keep it up most of what you say does match with my channel vision except for the character I kinda have my own lil plan with the character and the drawings I’m super huge into art and I hope that when I get bigger I can include more of other peoples art but just as my character to support other people and the MS paint drawings I draw jusr cuz I think they are funny and I don’t wanna make another artist draw literally everything for my video I do feel like I’ve improved a lot since my first video but this will help a lot to refine what I am making thank you so much for the advice again :) 💚💚💚

Only thing I will not take is about my thumbnails 🙏 I know they are not the ideal thumbnail but I wanna keep a theme for my channel and having the drawn thumbnails is a part of it my CTR isn’t too bad so I’m not worried about that
