#how does one “get good”?

Well firstly, don’t be so hard on yourself. Secondly, using elite difficulty on events would be a good way to test your skills. Once you can confidently win most events on elite, you are easily in the upper tier of riders. Imo anyway.
And pay attention while doing it, try to match the movements of the first place ghost. Watch which line they take, how they recover, and the rating of equipment they’re using. All useful knowledge toward “getting good”.
Trick events I use 3rd person, any race I use 1st person. It's way easier to spot the line and make turns. Even in mass races, 1st person I find way easier than 3rd. It may feel way more hectic, but controlling the character I find a lot easier.
i find races much easier in first person, i can cut past obstacles with high precision with the trajectory locked to the middle of the screen, especially in rocketwing sections
pro tip for rocketwing/wingsuit: tree branches don't have collision, just the trunks. if you can deduce where the trunks are and aren't, you can fly right through small groups of trees without having to go over or around
also, for rocketwing, going up and down is much slower than side to side, so 1. avoid altitude changes if possible, and 2. if drastic altitude changes are needed, make sure you have a lot of space and start a bit earlier than you think you need to
don't be afraid to use your brakes if need be. slowing down is faster than crashing!
if you get stuck or turned backwards, you can switch to walking to reposition
