Character tries to stand a few steps away from the wall and falls into the hole every time I try to speak with the new NPC.

You are speaking to them, just that the camera is following you down the hole and obscuring the text box as a result

You can get out of it by pressing through the dialogue, but you won't be able to read it unfortunately
