The only fix I've found was to either clear the storage of Pixel Launcher (the original launcher), or Force Stop the Pixel Launcher. 3. Choose "install to inactive slot", and press Let's Go.
4. Now reboot

Alternatively, if you update via flashing in recovery, just flash Magisk directly after flashing update.

Yes, you typically flash Magisk after you have flashed the ROM. I'd even recommend flashing it after you have booted the phone first.

But I don't flash Magisk. I use Magisk to patch the ROMs boot.img, then fastboot flash that patched boot.img.

Magisk doesn't really recommend flashing it via recovery.

Yes, that's still possible.

It's just the Magisk devs don't really recommend it anymore.

What they do recommend is:

1. Extract the boot.img from the ROM
   You can do this by several methods, but I usually extract the .img from the ROM file using payload dumper

2. Move the extracted boot.img to your phone

3. Open the Magisk app and select Install > Select and patch a file > choose the boot.img file

4. Wait for Magisk to finish patching the file. It'll usually put the patched file under the Downloads folder, with the name magisk-patched-xxx.img or something similar.

5. Move the patched img to your computer

6. Reboot phone to fastboot and flash the patched file:
   $ fastboot flash boot magisk-patched-xxx.img

7. Boot up the phone, and open the Magisk app. It should say that Magisk is installed.
