I kept getting 'urgent' contracts that i was forced to accept. I see in other bug reports that this can be ignored, however I did not ignore them. I am now at the "Winds of Change" contract that requires materials that I have not even researched.
rejected the urgent contracts as they came in and cancelled ones that couldn't be completed at the early stage in the game that I am.
Takes a lot, but reject the urgent contracts as they come in when you are playing the game.
