getting a max army size- Castle 25- takes significantly less time than getting all gold heros.

VIP limits how many times you can sweep also. So if you don't have a heavy p2p guild it will take a while to have unlimited sweeps and bravehearts

Hard to tell you what to make because we don't know what you're doing with your acct like rally lead, filler, trap etc

If he doesn't know how gear works or what he is able to make, it's unlikely he knows the difference between lead filler or trap.

@patent silo Gear "works" when you have it equipped and engage in a relevant activity. Put on your lunar flutes before you start a research, for example. Some stats are only effective if you have your leader deployed in battle... so wearing war gear does nothing if you don't send leader also.

Some gear is effective when you land on a tile rather than when you send your army. For example, you can wear speed gear when you launch and swap to war gear before your army hits for the battle boosts. Additionally, for gather speed and capacity, the gear needs to be equipped when your army lands on the tile- do not swap til they do.
