They're not inherently bad, just the worst cost to might ratio of all the types. Once people unlock T4 there's no point training t3. Ever.

I recall a post on reddit where someone explained their theory behind it. It was based around morale and grouping squads, such that if you have significant T3 numbers it does what crazy is suggesting- you end up losing too much morale compared to T2

while we may never know the real logic behind it we do know from several battle reports that comps with lots of T3 just burn easier
