How do I wire this speaker? Does it matter which side the red and black go on?

eh, probably just the type of solder they used, might have an additive to it.

It might have some form of coating on it as well. Sometimes that's done on audio devices.

Ah. Is it safe to solder over it then?

Should be. I've resoldered coated headphone wires before, the coating just sort of burns away.
