it's usually advised to only pull the SD from any board when it's powered down.
probably can still get away with it, but it increases chances of corrupting files on the SD.
Yes it is required.
The soundboard only imports from the SD card when it is booted up which requires the battery to be removed and reinserted. The latest firmware fixes the issue where all settings are reset by adding a config file saved to the SD card.
