#Add a "Sports" social channel

It seems with lots of popular international sports getting a lot of attention, there's been off-topic discussion in other channels. Rather than bending the rules with off-topic discussion, I think it could be useful to have a dedicated channel for discussing non-gaming events and sports like soccer/football, racing, etc.

Shiny hunters don't shiny hunt 24/7, nor do tera raiders raid all the time shrug you're not the first person to complain about this but I personally don't get it, what's wrong with some downtime

#

Sure it can get to be a lot but people are free to actually shiny post and some of us will naturally deviate

#

You can't just assume it'd get drowned out

#

Tera raids is the same with basketball, people have fun but don't get in the way when someone comes in on-topic, we back off

#

They've been allowed this, competitive and breeding has been allowed this with their other hobbies and small talk, why does shiny hunters get the most flack

#

Post your shinies and we will come YesYes

#

With that being said, I feel like this could potentially work

#

It's up to the mods to try it, and I'm sure they would cooperate

#

My main point is just that sometimes you have to start the conversation you want to be a part of

#

I see as much gacha talk in general but they don't get moved to non-Pokémon games, that has only happened once under extreme circumstances

#

I understand the sentiment but it has just an equal risk of being divisive

So as was said people are allowed to talk about other things in other channels as long as it doesn't impede the actual channel (ie, as long as it doesn't impede raids, sportsball chatting is fine so long as people stop when raids pop up) we also have #general_chat which...basically does this anyway. So there's no real reason to add another channel to do what General already does. It'd be mostly pointless and would just be another channel to moderate

My main point in this was to keep things more on-topic. I generally have channel notifications turned off, but I know many don't (or don't know how) and will find themselves getting notified about a new post only to check it and find that it's just some people talking about football or something. It seems that there's a lot of interest specifically in discussing sports, enough that I can watch the Shiny Hunters channel and see an entire discussion about some sport going on, using terms I often don't even understand, and no one is saying anything about shiny Pokémon. Sure, when someone does post a shiny everyone discusses it for a moment, but it sometimes starts to feel like Shiny Hunters is more about football and racing, and occasionally sharing a shiny that someone caught.

When I first started on this server, I often found that people were very particular about things being in their appropriate channel. If I was in Shiny Hunters and even mentioned that I was considering trading away a shiny I caught and didn't need, I'd be immediately told that it was the wrong channel and be redirected to the trading or giveaways channels. It wasn't disrupting the Shiny Hunters channel, but it was considered off-topic and I was warned to keep things in its intended channel. I figure if it's so strict that I couldn't even talk about trading shiny Pokémon in the Shiny Hunters channel, then why is it acceptable to talk about something that's not even related to Pokémon?

Now, please don't take this as me pushing for banning all off-topic discussion. I just feel like it might make more sense to have a proper channel for sports discussion, since there's clearly an interest in discussing sports.

I think there is a difference between off-topic chat and not using the correct channel. They're very hot on trading not taking place outside those channels as it makes it easier to moderate and keep track of

This is because we have dedicated trading channels, like amy said, and also the shiny hunters community is basically a more relaxed general chat community, and not everyone is shiny hunting all the time, but that shiny hunters chat doesn't really have a dedicated purpose other than for shiny hunters to help each others shiny hunt better. Also, not everyone in that chat is hunting all the time, so there usually is off-topic discussions like F1, football or sports in general to fill in downtime when there is not a lot of people hunting at that time. Shiny hunters chat is just the gen chat but it has more purpose than gen chat iykwim

Being told to go to the correct channels has nothing to do with being on or off topic, as was said, it's a moderation thing. We have specific channels for specific things for a reason and if someone gets scammed it's a lot harder to see what was offered, where it was offered, etc.
Sports talk is fine in shiny hunters or gen chat and we're not going to add another channel just for that because of it. I can almost guarantee no one would use it because that's not what they want. They want a place to talk to friends while they're taking a break from other things (ie shiny hunting) and then can go back to it when they feel it. It also often helps people not burn out on certain things if they're allowed to talk about other topics, so long as when the channel subject comes up it's not impeding that subject matter.
