if possible, I think you should make it so the Listener role can't be selected if you are a New Member. People ping for someone to listen to their vent, and sometimes dm about it, and they're putting a kind of trust in this person. I just think it would be good for preventing trolls or people with malicious intent. if that makes sense.

I agree, I’d imagine that this would be done by blocking the channel from people without the member role. I also feel that the channel should be blocked from people below the age of 16 as well. that wouldn’t prevent all members from bypassing the role but I think it would help reduce it (since they see “you must be 16 to have this role” or whatever, this way they’d be told that they just don’t have permission to view the channel

people obviously could still switch to 16-17 or older and then get it, but this way the channel wouldn’t be telling them to change their age to get the role

I'm pretty sure the verified listeners and our old lead listener did talk about this problem as well but I forgot what they said
Based on my own personal experience, there are also some listeners who do more harm than good by not following the guidelines [esp handling cases they're not really confident in]. This can both harm the venter and the listener!
I think having a potential listener learn about the server and overall mechanism then obtain the listener role would be a lot more feasible. Safer for both venter and listener 
Oh and can we do something about the members with 'listener' in their names? Sometimes it's annoying whenever I try to ping the listener role for me/other people cause we gotta scroll and all that but I'll always end up accidentally pinging a member instead of the role.
