Hello, You can call me Vince, I'm 17. There's a high chance I have Asperger's. I also excel in school (in comparison to my family) and I really wish to live separate from my parents

Hello, to start this off firstly I will say that my parents absolutely hate each other. My mom said she wishes she could leave our father if she was financially independent (even though she makes the most money) and not a day goes bye where there isn't yelling, screaming, arguing, maybe some crying between the two. She isn't a saint herself, but she's better than my dad at least. I can understand why she is the way she is. Yet my dad, he is so antagonizing, he's not there for me at all- aside from putting a roof over my head, and paying for groceries. Other than that, he is not a good man. Not one I can look into the eyes of.

There are a lot of other problems that need to be address, but this is the main one that was on my mind. We can discuss more of this once you reply

Hey Vince, my parents are the exact same way, so I know exactly how you feel right now. Do you want to talk more about it?

sour kestrel
#

Sure, what would you like to know? I'm an open book pratically

#

Has it always been like this at home

sour kestrel
#

Yes eversince i was young

#

I just realized how bad it was the older I got

#

my mother has threated suicide often, both of of parents have threated leaving each other OFTEN.

#

We suspect my father is bipolar

#

and my mother is a complete hot head

#

The emotional baggage i must have by being the one to mediate arguments, be calm and never get mad my self, having patience, listening to the two vent and complain to me, where then after i tell them what to do. Its tiring. Most people- family and friends- say its quite rare to see me genuienly mad

#

Its like i need to be the adult in a lot of situations

#

I don't know how to explain

#

but its like for a lot of things, i need to be the voice of reason, emotional correctness etc

#

one top of that, many therapists have suggested there is a heavy chance i have aspergers

#

theres more to this

outer sierra
#

Omg, we are living the exact same life (minus the aspergers). I’m not 100% confident on my knowledge of aspergers, but I know if you do have it, it’s probably affecting how you’re handling this situation. We are the same age btw and I know it’s mentally draining to be the “adult” when you’re still trying to figure your life out. I just keep reminding myself that I will be away from that environment very soon as I prepare for college. It’s honestly been great motivation for me. I know it’s hard to be optimistic when all you are used to is negativity, but you need to know that it will get better with time. I’m here for you because I know how it feels. We’re going to be okay. I feel like I have another sibling now lol

i've always been wanting to get a diagnosis but my moms been adament that i dont get one

#

and yes we're both 17 yet we gotta help grown adults solve simple problems at times

#

and yeah, college is coming soon, but i dont know what to do nor how to plan

#

i do dual enrollment, where i take college and highschool classes at the same time

#

il be one semester short of graduation with my AA once i get out of highschool

#

and thank you, kind sir

#

theres a lot on my mind but its all over the place

outer sierra
#

OMG, I do dual enrollment too

#

We’re too similar, I’m getting scared

#

Are you a junior or senior in hs?

sour kestrel
#

im a junior at the moment?

#

does that break the coincidences yet?

outer sierra
#

It does loll

#

Well I definitely recommend preparing for the college application process now

#

Because it sucks

#

Do you know what career path you wanna go down?

sour kestrel
#

international relations myself

#

i need to look into it more

#

and the college application?

#

im afraid to take the SAT/PSAT as im not good at math but im trying to learn it from algebra all over again

outer sierra
#

You can always take it over if you need to, but honestly a lot of schools don’t even ask for test scores. If you have good scores though you’ll have a better chance of acceptance

#

You should start searching for schools that have that program and apply for every single scholarship that’s available

sour kestrel
#

im so overwhelemd

#

i mean what do i need to apply for a college

#

like what do they look for

#

you said a lot don't ask for test scores

outer sierra
#

Well they do, but it’s often optional to put them on your application! They usually look at gpa, school clubs, leadership/volunteer activities, class rank, an essay about what ever you want to write about, and some will ask you to give written responses to questions like “what would you contribute if accepted to this school?”

sour kestrel
#

whats a good gpa

#

both weighted and unweighted

#

also i have not joined any clubs :/

#

i was to a boyscout but quit

#

though im considering going for my eagle scout

#

class rank is like 70% percentile

#

i feel so far behinde

outer sierra
#

You can join club’s senior year, that’s what I did!

#

Gpa would depend on the school you’re applying to, I think a 3.5 - 4.0+ weighted gpa and 4.0 - 2.8 unweighted is good

sour kestrel
#

okay im in the rupper range than

#

its just math

#

i didnt know how to deal with not having a math teacher in eight grade so i just goofed off

#

and thus now im actually trying to learn algebra

#

and just math

#

im sorta making progress

#

any other pieces of advice?

#

please

#

pleasepleasee

Some schools require students to have a letter of recommendation from their teachers/guidance counselor to complete the application. It’s basically just a letter that explains why you would be a good choice for that school. Scholarship applications will ask for them too. Ask for them ASAP!

#

i want all the info one what i need to look good on my college applications

#

thank you btw

Of course, I’m happy to help. I’m not sure what else I can tell you, I’ve given you everything I’ve encountered while applying. Every school wants academically intelligent students, but it’s important to show pieces of your personality on your application, which is why the personal essay is so important. They have great advice on the internet on how to go about writing it.
