Due to the fact that your build is hasn't "taken off" yet, most of the rooms are small and in later difficulties, overloaded with enemies, and theres a shit ton of barrels, grenadiers, and bombers that leave behind huge puddles of stuff that hurts
And because the rooms are so small, it's really hard to not end up getting hit with corrosion or sum

Remember to pay attention to the Hero-specific upgrade tree to the right of all the skills!
It also helps to remember that "Miasma" (Corrosion + Lightning) is hands down the best elemental combo.
If you see a mod that makes you think, "Why would I ever take that?!" take special note of it. a) It almost certainly is part of a ridiculously broken synergy, and b) ALSO will be insane if Enhanced.

Also just weapon levels. Weapon leves do a LOT. Monkey can be great for that cause you can easily get + 15 levels which does a LOT
Also Deadly counter (deal crits for 3 seconds after taking dmg) with forced self damage in Capactiy overdraft (secondary useage costs health if at 0) and Hawkeye sight (+2.0x crit dmg) meaning i was dealing like an extra 5x dmg
on top of maxed out lucky shot chance meaning even more. still i feel like cause it was a single instance of dmg it worse bad dps wise

so here's my understanding thus far:
use his secondary ability to gain Astroaspects which are added to your astroaspect slots (the three scroll slots on the bottom of your screen). astroaspects have a random quality whose chance is based on the average rarity of the occult scrolls you own, and cursed ones are random.
when you get 3 astroaspects, it fills a bar called Astrohouse. you can continuously use his skill to reroll your astroaspects. if you get all 3 of the same kind of astroaspect (so blue/purple/orange, and red is equivalent to orange), you get a special boost to your primary based on the quality.
your primary is essentially a(n at least initially) small aoe that does damage, and gains the secondary effect of causing stars to fall on enemies when you have full astrohouse.

the game really gives you a lot of ways to quickly cycle astroaspects and improve their general quality/consistency, and i think how strong he is makes up for occasional dips in power created by bad luck
i think once you progress a bit with him it's less like you can either get lucky or unlucky and more like you're usually pretty lucky but can get really lucky or really unlucky
so like, good baseline amount of power with occasional spikes/dips
