A selkie is a irish folklore creature that has the skin of a seal and when it takes the skin off, it turns into a human. There are male and female selkies, but most stories commonly feature females selkies. The storiesusually go that some guy (usually a dipshit in my opinion) finds a selkie changing her form one day at the shore and then one day steals her coat so that she'll be forced to marry him and bear his children. Then after some time the selkie finds their skins and run away back to the ocean and never return. In some stories, the selkies fall in love and stay with the man willingly, and choose to lock away their coats so that they aren't tempted to leave their families and go back to the sea. In the case of male selkies, I believe I read somewhere they like to go onto shore once a year (I think?) and mate with an attractive human women and leave them with the baby. There's only one male selkie story I can think of, where the selkie king falls in love with a human woman and tells her he wants to marry her, and if she wishes to marry him back, to find a seal skin to wear by midnight so that she can join him in his kingdom. She goes to her house and tells her grandmother, who goes into a chest and takes out a seal skin for her granddaughter to wear. So the girl puts it on and joins the selkie king.

So for selkie mairuma, methinks Iruma spent most of his life with his terrible (adopted) parents who are neglectful and make him work all the time, and he's thinking he was human the whole time, until one day a strange dapper man wearing a fancy, expensive looking coat and offers to buy Iruma for a lot of money, to which his awful parents agree. So he takes Iruma and leads him down to the sea, where he points and says "this is where you will live from now on" and Iruma's like "huh IrumaFear" and grandpa gives him and coat and makes him walk into the sea with him and thats how he finds out he has selkie blood in him!! :3

He's probrably going to go back and forth from being on land to being in the ocean a lot since he's not very used to being a seal. I also kinda like the idea of at some point while he's back on land, one of his friends (most likely Clara) just tosses his coat at him and yanks him into the water XD completely unaware that it takes him like a whole 5 minutes to get dressed and turn.

I also like the idea of him meeting his classmates as human kids at different chapters when they're off doing "human things" (ie. Jazz: pickpocketing, Lied: playing games with other kids, Elizabetta: Shopping, etc.) and becoming friends with all of them along the way

Okay so this fic is gonna be Dadlego (cuz I just. I love the trope sm and you can pry it from my cold dead hands) and Shichikal. And for whatever reason (probably from this au's equivalent to the Six Fingers) Kalego and Balam had to get rid of their baby so Kalego took off he and Iruma's skins, took him to the nearest human settlement, dropped him off at someone's doorstep, and left taking Iruma's coat with him. Grandpa is the selkie king and Kalego is his loyal bodyguard and official protector of the kingdom, and he found out because Kalego and Balam were trying to find Iruma for years now that it's safe to do so, but have had no luck. So since Grandpa is well connected (as a human and a selkie), he tracked down the place Kalego had left Iruma and watched the kids until he found the one that was definitely Iruma. Selkie-human hybrid children (cuz I think I'd like Balam to be human in this au) have special characteristics like webbed fingers and toes, and when he saw Iruma, he knew that he found who he was looking for.

I'm imagining some guy tries to steal one of the misfits' coats and then proceeds to get his absolute shit rocked after they all show up at his house in human form with rocks and sticks to beat him with XD

Maybe it will help me draw (or write) if I describe what I want this scene to be

Lied is at the top cuz he likes to feel tall (lol). He is telling a story about something cool he found out one day while playing with the local kids
Jazz is listening, occasionally chiming in, while toying with some shiny jewelry he stole
Purson is just off to the side, not contributing anything, but definitely listening
Elizabetta and Kerori are also listening to the story, the latter having kicked Kamui off of their rock
Agares is asleep, as usual, but will occasionally wake up a little and listen as well
Gaap is listening very intently, and is usually the one who wakes Agares up so he can listen too if it sounds like something he'd be interested in
Asmodeus is only half listening to Lied, and mostly droning out the rambles of Clara, just feeling nice to relax next to Iruma
Iruma is hanging out with the full misfit gang for the first time - he was a little nervous climbing the rocks and is a bit scared he'll fall off if he accidently falls asleep, but is really enjoying being together with everyone, especially his two best friends
Clara is clinging to Iruma and rambling to him and Azz about anything that crosses her mind, which is mostly things like what her day was like and the things she did
Sabro is also listening to Lied, and chatters incessantly with him about the things he recognizes in the latter's speech, accidently derailing the conversation more than a few times.
Kamui is, as usual, trying to get to the girls and ignoring everything else 😒
And Allocer is half-listening to Lied while thinking about when he'll next see his human girlfriend...

This reminds me - I'll need to make more human-esc designs for Kamui and Allocer...

The others get so scared for Allocer once it's revealed he has a human girlfriend. They all know about mortals' tendencies to steal selkie skins and force them to be their spouses, after all. They all demand to see her, but Allocer refuses on the principle that they'll all somehow embarrass him and probrably make her uncomfortable. Eventually he promises that some time in the future they'll get to meet her properly in exchange for them promising not to threaten her about not stealing and hiding his coat, since he gives it to her willingly to look after whenever he is in human form and she's always given it back. They begrudgingly agree, but are wary and curious about who Allocer seems to trust so much...

The misfits usually take their coats with them along with their travels. Too risky to hide them and hope nobody comes along and steals them! However, thankfully they have trusted adults human adults around who can look after their coats and other trinkets they collect during their human-form expeditions.
Balam is the only one who all of the misfits know. He adores them and loves to ask them about their day and what new things they learned about humans while they were away, and if they have any questions about things, he'll gladly answer them. He in turn like to ask questions about selkie culture and biology, trying not to get into anything personal or disturbing (since, yknow, they're kids) but his excitement is very obvious.

One time one of the misfits came up to him crying that their coat had been stolen by some fisherman and WOOOAH BUDDY he was pissed. That was the first time the misfits had ever seen him so angry when he stormed up to the guy's house and threatened to tear his head off if he didn't give back the coat.
