If you don't know what's a variable, you aren't going to guess it. Java (and many many programming languages) use variables a lot. It's supposed to be a very early feature learned in the language. Sounds like you need to drop this assignment for now and come back when you know what are variables

They just mean write a solution, but do it like it can be read by other people. Don't make it a mess that nobody can figure out
Like it doesn't need to be understandable by a musician who haven't learned to program in Java, but it needs to be obvious enough for anyone who's comfortable in Java
