to narrow it down, why does line 25 cause the profram to crash instead of looping

You ought to have assigned the user input to 'numscores' before initializing the 'scores' array. Otherwise the size of the array remains 0 (the initial value of 'numscores') even when the value of 'numscores' changes later.
