I realised afterwards that it was a ‘temporary message’ as opposed to a private one. Not sure if this makes any difference?

There is a list of message types when you go to the message menu… and the message I received comes under temporary messages’

I have had the same with someone who's definitely not on my server. They can send to me but I can't reply.
