this was a "enhancement" that was slipped in by TW. They did not allow us to vote on whether it was a good or bad change. The only way to get these shards is by doing your daily reward quests. The removal of red dots is consistent with the change.

Also giving shards via daily reward quests allowed them to reduce the GEM reward for the 10 th quest. Sneaky B's
