I have my eyes on that game since the fan translation was released... Sounds like a very interesting Alone in the Dark look-alike

#

I will play it on the MiSTer for sure when the core arrives

#

That, and Killing Time, Road Rash, and other great 3DO games

tranquil mortar
#

I don't know any 3do games, but I'm looking forward to the core and trying them out.

chilly gale
#

I've just put my Goldstar 3DO up for sale along with the games. Way of the Warrior is one of those bad Mortal Kombat clones which I have and is quite desirable to collectors for some reason.

verbal fjord
#

It's an early Naughty Dog game, I guess that makes it collectable?

marble jetty
#

I don’t know how much influence the MiSTer has on retro game prices but once there’s more articles out there about a 3DO core, prices should rise simply due to increasing visibility on that console.

tranquil mortar
#

My jaguar is only going up in value.

karmic basin
#

Yeah, I did not have Jaguar slated to become one of my most valuable consoles.

#

But if someone really wants to pay that much for a copy of Rayman, who am I to argue?

dense remnant
#

I only recently learned that when Hasbro owned the rights to the Jaguar, they released those rights to the public domain... like, back in the '99!

#

Never knew that.

karmic basin
#

That when Songbird Productions ramped up.

dense remnant
#

That just seems crazy to me... roughly 5-6 years after it was released.

sharp pendant
#

It was really cool Hasbro did that, I guess they figured they would benefit more from the positive press than they would from owning the licence/patents etc.

#

Is a shame more companies haven't done this, but maybe they haven't been asked

karmic basin
#

At the time they were shipping a lot of retro revival titles for platforms of the time under the Atari name.

sharp pendant
#

Like I can't imagine V-tech care about the Socrates, or Casio the Loopy

#

I've started working on my Sorted Set for the Panasonic 3DO. Should be a much faster process than for CD-i, given its library mostly consists of games.

sharp pendant
#

Nice one, that will be very useful, can be used as the basis for the testing sheet. Redumps are gold standard for dumps, but an unsorted pack of 500+ disc images is not good on the SD card or for testing

distant grove
distant grove
verbal fjord
#

Oh interesting! All I really know is that it got savaged by magazine reviews for the most part when it came out

#

good to know it's not quite as bad as everyone said

distant grove
#

It got mediocre reviews across the board. Some mags tore it to shreds, others were impressed by its graphics and gave it genuine criticism

#

Mediocre games back then are eaten alive by the standards people have today. I mean, theres an entire group of people on the internet who shit on SM64 way more than they should.

#

I think SM64 has genuinely annoying aspects and mechanics, but I don't think it's horrible. So even the best games out there get their fair share of shit people throw

verbal fjord
#

That's true

distant grove
#

For WOTW, you should turn the difficulty down slightly and keep your distance from the CPU. I couldn't get beyond the first opponent until I figured those two things out

#

If you watch some of the ces footage of people playing a demo, the crowd is quite pleased with WOTW

#

People see mortal Kombat "clones" and expect them to be mortal Kombat

#

Same issue with "doom clones". Every fps back then, was supposed to be doom, without being doom. Absurd expectation

ashen palm
#

yeah - Duke 3D and Dark Forces are the best from that era since they were trying to be FPS games, not doom clones

#

the only decent non-MK digitized actor fighting game from then is like, SFII The Movie: The Game (and maybe The Kung-Fu Master Jackie Chan)

verbal fjord
#

Dark Forces was so good... it was the first game I played through the SoundBlaster AWE32 that I got for christmas

ashen palm
#

DF runs surprisingly good on the ao486 core too

verbal fjord
#

Oh, good to know! I am hoping to get a MT3pi which would make it that much better

distant grove

Jurassic Park Interactive seems like a neat 3DO exclusive. Looking forward to this core.

karmic basin
#

Hang on to that energy.

fossil sorrel
#

Jurassic Park Interactive was a game I owned. I still sometimes whisper a rhetorical "why?" under my breath.

distant grove
#

JPI is very similar to activity center point and click games from the PC. It has its own way of being fun. Was the first 3do game I got ahold of. I thought it was fun in its own right

@tribal sandal or @trail raven Can you elaborate what you mean by gen adapter? I’m considering getting the Reflex Adapt (not just for 3DO, but also for others Saturn, etc) what adapters can I buy that would allow me to use an original 3DO controller?

trail raven
#

The mega driver/ genisis seems to be the same serial pin out as the 3do... Note The signals sent through the pins are not the same in each system, but the controller connector looks the same ....but the fits MAY be different

#

The reflex adapter has 3DO As an option you can set the adapter up as....but misteraddons doesn't have a distinct 3do cable

#

I think @spark locust would be the best to answer this

Mr pork ... For 3do on the reflex adapter...can we just use the genisis -> reflex cable?

steel pelican
#

Ah thanks for explaining, funny I just asked on MisterAddons chat support too. Will give them time to answer and can report back if he doesn’t answer here.

trail raven
dense remnant
#

At the very least the pinouts between the two controllers are the same. EDIT: Nope

I do remember using a Sega Genesis extension cable with 3DO controllers though.

steel pelican
#

MisterAddons confirmed as well. Genesis adapter will work w/ 3DO gamepad.

dense remnant
#

Porkbot has spoken!

#

Does the 3DO definitely fit in a Mega drive/Genesis SNAC adaptor?

#

I thought they were slightly different shape

#

Be great to have someone check if they can

final grail
#

its a standard Atari Style plug db9

spark locust
#

The Genesis adapter works for 3DO controllers on the Reflex Adapt

sharp pendant
#

If it is standard DB9 then that makes things a lot easier

spark locust
#

There's a pin mismatch but it hasn't been an issue

#

It won't work for SNAC

#

That will require a dedicated adapter

sharp pendant
#

Does Reflex support multiple controllers daisy chained?

#

Or guess maybe won't know until there is a core

Another CD classic.

#

Far more difficult than the later Extreme edition on Saturn/PSX

dense remnant
#

I remember that well. I collected every issue of EGM for years from the late '80s to mid '90s along with so many other magazines... until I found good quality digital scans of most of them many years later and threw them all away. Sometimes I wish I had still kept them, but they were just taking up too much space. I eventually started viewing them as just something that would help my house burn down faster. 😄

Once I realized I'd never look through a single one of those physical issues again, combined with the fact that I hadn't looked through them in probably 20 years anyway, the decision to get rid of them was much easier.

#

...but having complete digital scans of many of them certainly helped that decision. 😏

So I looked on ebay USA and there's loads of the panasonic ones, they go for about £130/40. I guess cos there's more of them over there. Maybe not a good idea, you know what this retro thing is like, you buy a spectrum, then a 64, then an st, then an amiga, then the consoles. Sure, if you're evaluating this at a single point instead of the bigger picture.... "It's a beta" isn't an excuse if half the graphical assets are missing, the gameplay is at unrecognizable levels of bad, and it's missing SFX. But this is a game that has more content in its BETA than some retail mk ports had on the shelf. A public beta is for gameplay testing. People watching a video, and saying "looks terribly off" or "this isn't worth playing, gameplay is off" and not liking "it's a beta. Play it. Report bugs" as a response don't have any useful input anyway. That is why it's uncalled for and annoying. Theres a bigger picture here than "you're not allowed to criticize, it's not finished"

Kilrathi Saga is the definitive WC3... for now. WC1/2 you want the DOS editions.

The only other release like that was WC3 Japan which was the Windows build of the game without the rest of Kilrathi Saga.

WC1/2/3 DOS all run in MiSTer AO486. 3 runs but has performance issues, 4 runs similar to 3. Privateer runs well on MiSTer I'd love a 68040LC (non-FPU) core for an M68K Apple core that could run Super Wing Commander. 3DO core is also awesome for SWC.

#

Afaik, no. It's just a very inefficient core. Rather than replicating a 486 CPU, it's based on a software approximate, it's missing FPU and could get optimised further. There's a lot of things you could do to optimise it, some of which the developers don't want to do.

#

e.g you could axe a bunch of sound support to get more FPGA space, you could rewrite the CPU to be based on a chip design and not the BOCHS x86 architecture.

#

I'd like to see a core done that axes some sound and gives the VGA card more capacity.

#

Stuff like that, you'd probably need to split the core into different Core files for different tasks.

You know.. I owned all of these systems back in the day and it still shocks me to see those Saturn numbers. Sega just completely mishandled the system. It could have been taken into a safe direction and gained traction. Yes, it was indeed a 3D hungry environment, but there was still many games they could have developed in 2D, quality titles, that could have boosted sales. Tragic for sure.

I think Sega did the best they could, especially in Japan, but Sega’s arcade focused design philosophy was not what the market wanted anymore.

#

The US team also squandered all their market lead and profit from the Genesis days. They got real lucky early on but they had no clue what they were doing towards the end of the Genesis. Sega of Japan’s mistake was letting a bunch of marketing executives in the US play pretend game developer and they royally screwed the pooch on every angle.

#

Sega of Japan also got lucky with the Saturn. Sega was never a big name in Japan outside of arcades and the Master System + Genesis were basically also-rans from the very beginning.

#

The Saturn had no chance from the beginning. Sega caught wise a year or so after launch which is why they tried to reboot with the Dreamcast.

#

Whatever Sega was peddling, no one outside Japan wanted. Focusing more on 2D just would’ve killed the system faster outside of Japan.

while y’all wait for the 3DO core’s first release.
May I recommend my favorite game on the platform, The Hoard.

it’s very playable right now on the Saturn core

but there is a hilarious amount of wrong info out there on 3DO and M2. I get told every video M2 didnt exist and was cancelled and no hardware was ever made. Which really makes me worry about people as do they think I am CGI'ing the hardware and games? 🤣

dire sinew
#

to be fair, until your vids, i was under the same impression. (or that the only thing that existed was prototype consoles and boards.)

Media coverage around the M2 in the 90s was weird because they would show you D2 and all the cool stuff coming and then….coverage just stopped. and if it ever came up in later issues of a magazine it was the “canceled M2 project”. So I think a lot of folks just assume that nothing came of it

I really think that was the narrative (at least here in the states). It was in all the magazines for like a year, and then it just vanished (and was referred to posthumously as "the canceled M2 project"). And that was kind of that. Once the internet came around, I don't think many folks were hunting down info.

I was genuinely surprised that not only were there games for it, but that Bacon had fucking arcade boards

karmic basin

If CD-i gets MPEG card support, there’s your VCD player.

#

IF it’s going to happen, that would be the console it would benefit the most.

visual sonnet
#

Was the CD-i mpeg playback any better than that which the 3DO got?

#

Not worried about VCD's but there are some CD-I games that really benefit from the VCD card like Lost Eden

karmic basin
#

I’ve never done any testing outside of simply watching movies, but I doubt there is much difference. It was all built to the same standards.

#

Only system that is an “upgrade” would be a Saturn, but that’s because you could use RGB output.

sharp pendant

Just so everyone is on the same page, there is definitely no space for the VCD card in the Saturn core on the DE-10 Nano, and that would be a very complex thing to implement if possible on a future board.
