The CL is different on the QMtech boards too

The flash chip just might have been added because the DE10 has one ?

If the QMTech board is equivalent to the original MiSTer DE-10 Nano stack, I recommend also pulling down RetroFrog's original design. Both should have matching coordinates and cutting the two step files apart and stitching the parts back together so to speak will probably be the easiest approach to making a QMTech case. Primary changes would be the USB-c in on the back of the case, the 3 USB A ports from the USB Hub on the bottom back of the board. Some of the changes, while unnecessary, should be ok to keep, like the extra support added for the power switch. If I didn't make any mistakes while modifying things, that should be 100% backwards compatible with the original switch holder without any modifications needed

faint dune
delicate hazel
#

Dont think so

balmy grotto
#

(and additionally, raise the 3 back USB A ports on the hub)

#

(well, or make the buttons taller, that would also probably work. The former charges are a better pick in my book since it minimizes the number of parts differences)

faint dune
#

is the best way to figure out how tall it needs to be just use a ruler? or is there a better way? (This is the first thing I have ever done in fusion/bambu's slicer

#

The QMtech board fits fine in Todd's slim case. I printed one to use before QMtech released their USB/IO board
The only thing that didn't work was the SD card extension due to location change of the slot on the board

No analogue video output available on the slim case though

This also explains why QMtech removed it

lyric gull
dense umbra
#

Much better finish with that orientation

lyric gull
#

I dunno if people are tired of this case yet, but I printed the top at an angle yesterday, with mostly great results but some caveats. It results in much better resolution on the curved surfaces while not having the front or back have the build plate texture. But with the angle I printed, it's all top layers facing you when you look down on it, so the light that's reflected is different. You could print it angled with the front on the bed, but that might leave the bed texture visible at the seam on the front.

#

This did allow me to do a trick, after the light pipes printed I pulled the clear filament out of the AMS and swapped in glossy black for the jewel. So it's a five filament print technically. The white support interface worked perfectly, it just fell off the print.

dense umbra
#

#

I havent gone for a AMS yet as originally i had nowhere to leave the P1P setup all the time. It lived ina cupboard, i do have the space now though

lyric gull

Haha, cupboard as an enclosure.

dense umbra
#

No just for storage. My P1P is still open frame, i never bothered enclosing it as all i use is PLA for my projects

I highly recommend it. It's just soooo nice even for single colour prints. Just load up your favourites and start a print from your desk.

Translucent PLA+ is very reasonable about £13 a spool on Amazon. I just print as generic high speed

lyric gull

I only have a roll of translucent PLA, no +. It's okay, but I'll definitely get PLA+ when I replace it.

untold kayak
#

Makes me wonder what it would look like if you did it in something like ABS and smoothed it (i.e., acetone vapor treatment I think it is? Never messed with it myself)

lyric gull
#

Thought about that. After smoothing, you could hit it with a scourer to bring back a matte finish.

#

Another advantage of the angled print is that it won't need the changes I added to make it more printable, the top layer can be contoured on the inside too. This would make for a much nicer translucent print since there won't be infill.

untold kayak
#

Cura's got that "fuzzy skin" option, wonder how that would work with the angled print orientation? heh

lyric gull
#

That's a good option. Might be worth exploring. I haven't tried any fuzzy skin prints yet though.

untold kayak
#

Same, it looks kinda finicky. You can go too far with the setting and it gets really wacky

lyric gull
#

It might hide the print orientation better.

#

I don't know if it was a style where you're from, but for a while textured wall paints were a thing here. Reminds me of that haha.

Haha, printing printer parts is a right of passage.

upbeat gyro
#

My wife asked what I was printing last night….

#

A scraper so I can scrape the alignment lines off lol

lyric gull
#

I even printed and reprinted parts for my old printer when I got the P1S.

untold kayak
#

It's a slippery slope. You get your first one, you install some mods. You get your second one, which prompts you to rebuild your first one since it can be completely down without losing your ability to print. Next thing you know, you're designing elaborate direct drive extruder assemblies and installing accelerometers on things to do resonance cancellation, or bragging to your buds in Discord how your mesh bed leveling solution samples thousands of points of data within 30 seconds.

That video has convinced me to experiment with fuzzy skin now.

What orienation did you use to get the different 'grain' ? Ive been having that wort of wood/warped look on some prints

The only bits I change out now and again are are the nozel for details, and the Textured PEi or 'smooth PEI' plate depending on my needs

lyric gull

Oh, that was just flat. Curved surface up top.

hushed burrow
#

Oh? intresting

#

I was just curious what caused the diference between tehse two prints

#

You have that 'wood texture' on the left, like the grain, and a mostly nice smooth finish on the right

upbeat gyro
#

Waiting will give me time for yall to hash out a good print profile for this lol

lyric gull
#

The one on the left is printed flat, the one on the right is printed at a 45 degree angle.

#

The curved surface on the top resulted in the low resolution layer lines.

hushed burrow

Ah so a 45 degree angle got your a smoother result, thats intresting!

Tip for 3D printing, be ready to "oops" and throw away parts. Even parts that printed fine. Dessicant can help, but once it's wet it won't do much to correct the situation. I'd go ahead and research drying it, especially if you sit on rolls for a long time. PLA/HTPLA print okay enough even drenched in moisture if you can keep the temps low, but other filaments can be shot within hours and forcefully drying them helps immensely.

#

At higher printing temps, the moisture in the filament causes popping and zits all over your surface, and there's stringing, etc.

It's more a curiosity core, right? Like the CDi or a (hopefully one day) 3DO core. So few people owned them, so getting to play the games (even when they are bad) satiates the curiosity we had when saw them in magazines as kids

Hello, I'm interested in ordering the Turbo Pack once they're available but I'm unsure about one thing. I'd like to use dual RAM and it says that is possible on the store page by removing the AV v1.2. What is AV v1.2 for and what do I lose by not using it? I'd like to be able to use the MiSTer on my CRT as well as via HDMI. Cheers.

faint dune

I'll wade into waters I'm 100% sure about the part that you would need to remove is this:

that would allow RAM on both sides of the board

What I am unsure about is whether or not VGA would work without that piece

# limpid lodge The VGA port is connected to the AV board via this pin header right behind the V...

Got it now, comparing the schematics of AV Board v6.1 and v9.2. Apparently, v6.1 took the signal from P1, while v9.2 just takes it from this AV port with no further connection to P1. It looks like theoretically a bridge from P1 to this AV pin header could be possible, but I see from the v6.1 schematics that then a lot of additional resistors etc. are needed to create a valid RGB signal.
I extended my fan board with a user port and wanted to continue adding the buttons and leds. Adding the SMD microcontroller is the only critical part, but it might be easier than expected because there are prepared solder points on the board. But then, adding the VGA port could be pointless as long as the AV-board is not available separatedly. So I would have to go the HDMI-to-VGA adapter route in case I decided buy a crt and use analog out.

The advantage is clear the format of the board compared to the normal standard stack. Power switch and Scart are also included. I love this board. But yes, the price is perhaps a bit under pressure now, as there 20$ ram modules out now. At the first release time the boards for a normal stack was about 120, so that the price for the mms was competitive. That has changed now.

limber token

#

Vat depends on your location

dense umbra
dense umbra
#

The other issue is if you buy a Taki stack the analogue video is a downgrade on the MMS being 6.1 based 18bit and didn't score well in DAC testing
There is also no dual SDram support

If Richard did a new revision it might be better

limber token
#

Also the ram is V2.5 based iirc. But that is not the point. You got all the ports on only 2 sides, without any tinkering. There is also the option for an itx mount with small 3d printed brackets. The price difference was small at launch compared to the single items, That have changed now. Compared to the ironclad boards you get the ram and the expansion socket. I think 🤔 if Heber does a good pricepoint they could sell another 500… If not, then the next Taki all in one PCB will make the race in 2025.

dense umbra
#

The ITX mount is pointless as the board design doesn't follow the ITX spec with the ports being all over the place

The big elephant in the room will be the pricing too it will end costing more than the complete Taki stack going by previous pricing

The Ironclad pricing has the same issue but is a better designed board that follows ITX spec and had some decent QOL features

#

Better DAC
MD2 output
Switchable MT32-pi etc

#

Of course the better solutions will be Takis custom console designs which will also keep the price low

limber token
#

MMS is console style and ironclad is real itx design. But both have to fight now, cause of the 60$ stack with 128MB ram. So both need to cut the costs down. Personally I think 99$ would be fair as they not produce in china.

dense umbra
#

Jammix is a proper ITX design too

Heber produce in house in the UK and are an established electronics company, so it will never be as cheap as Chinese production

#

UltimateMiSTer did a run of MMS too

#

They all have to compete with Taki and QMtech now on price

QMtechs IO/USB board with case is only £25

limber token
#

True, but ultimate mister is more expensive than Heber was. I don’t think that many people are willing to spend more as double for the same function, only for the format. But let’s see and wait what Heber will be do. Sounds more like a last product run from them to get rid of the stock (parts and PCB).

#

Heber has open sourced it and could do a cheaper run now, cause they got there investment back already.

dense umbra
#

I am surprised we haven't seen more QMtech designed cyclone boards on the market yet from other producers seeing the designs are open source and on GitHub

limber token
dense umbra
#

The BOM on these boards is not much even for the DE10

Looks like automotive grade Cyclones availability is better too. You just need to find a good chip broker
Then it's just DDR, a couple of controllers and the rest is just noise

limber token
dense umbra
#

Only if you looked on Mouser or Digikey
Terasic would be paying around $20 a pop direct from Altera

#

This is why they could offer the DE10 for such a low price for years

limber token
#

Hmm, I don’t think so, terasic would have been granted a kind of refund in the past, but the prices for the single chips was real expensive. Otherwise we have seen many other boards using the same chip. Vampire or analogue has used much less powerful chips to save costs. Sorg has done a custom PCB instead the stack idea.

dense umbra
# limber token Hmm, I don’t think so, terasic would have been granted a kind of refund in the p...

The DE10 Nano was not used at the prototype stage of MiSTer but Terasic released it at the right time
MiST which MiSTer was forked from used a custom PCB but a off the shelf solution was a better for MiSTer

The DE10 Nano was the same price as the current compatible boards for years and up to around 2021 so those chips would have been very cheap to Terasic
There is no way Taki or QMtech could produce these boards without a similar price on the cyclone V

The Cyclone V is decade old and product on a high yield cheap per wafer process.
Altera will still have a very good wafer contract with TSMC

The issue is while Terasic had to raise pricing over COVID when the silicon industry did have shortages there is no need for it now but they seem to like the higher price point and left a gap wide open in the market for these compatible boards

Though you could argue Terasic are more focused on the industrial FPGA board where price points don't matter and margins are high unlike a cheap dev board made for a college programme

If you look at the Analogue 3D N64 that is using a Cyclone 10 with more LEs(150k) than the Cyclone V but still only a $249 price point

limber token
#

Yes, there seems now some movement in the FPGAs pricing from intel or altera. But only now and not years before. Before only Terasic seems to be able to produce the De10 nano cheaper as other parities could buy the single fpga chips.

dense umbra
#

Well Intel spun off Altera a few months ago and there has even been rumours of a sell off. Intel are the big issue with the new Agilex range though as their fabs are useless. I can never see it being viable at the hobby level

limber token
#

Last days we had some discussion about intel on another Discord.I found an interesting article (german) that seems very interesting in some points. Seems that intel is leader in packaging. I copy the link.

#

So it seems not true that there fabs are useless. But they need money to fight with the speed of TSMC. Or they could try to do the same as Nvidia, a fabless business. But that is risky in my eyes

dense umbra
#

They will end up like AMD and sell off the foundries in my opinion. Its dragging down the rest of the company like it did with AMD a decade ago, the fabs are losing billions per quarter.

Its their silicon processes that are useless, which is why they have very very poor yields per wafer. Intel had years and years to invest in their foundry tech and didnt bother and now its biting back. They are having to outsource silicon production to TSMC as it is

You now have another RE2 N64 tester, ready to play

There was a queue system when i went to checkout

Hmmm.. in line to order another one 🤔

meager dove
#

Silly question, is there a way to still get VGA out after removing this to enable a dual ram setup?

dire merlin
#

no

#

best you can do is direct video out of the hdmi port with an external dac, but that isn't "dual output"

#

if you just care about analog you can go that route, tho

meager dove
#

Right. I can do without dual output, mainly want to keep VGA to use my VGA to Component cable on my CRT Trinitron TV.

dire merlin
#

yeah, you're gonna have to do direct video -> dac -> component

#

and you'll need to ask who is using what dac because you need to find one that has good colors AND doesn't drop out on resolution changes

#

(I don't use DV so I don't know what's the current good dac(s))

meager dove
#

I got one recently from amazon but it's ass. Works but poor quality.

jagged pecan
#

Still up for grabs, they must've made so much this batch!

#

I figured the LTT video would've sparked more interests.

faint dune
#

Need to figure out what colors I am going to do for a retrofrog case. Grey and red, maybe?

jagged pecan
#

Any recommendations on snac adapters or would it make a difference to just do USB? Would love to use original controllers with little to no latency.

dense umbra
#

Still showing stock now so maybe the rush was mostly for the first batch ?

limber token
#

Or a bad timing date wise ?

dense umbra
#

doubt it its the ideal Xmas present for some

#

I think the main draw of the first batch was a plentiful option that brought the price back down to what it was which enticed more people that was either on the fence or were priced out

limber token
#

I bought a another mms instead, cause mister pi is ever there, but the mms for the reduced price (99,99£) will not come again I think.

dense umbra
#

I picked up a Qmtech which spends its time in the front room on the big TV

#

Richard stated he will be doing another of the MMS ready for the New year

limber token
#

Perhaps the 500 units aren’t sold out and he could keep some to stock again.

dense umbra
#

just waiting on my dual SDram board and case to arrive from Retrocastle for the DE10 to switch it over

dense umbra
limber token
#

My last Taki batch1 was dual stack, so I don’t need anymore dual systems.

limber token
dense umbra
#

The big issue now is the add on boards are as if not more expensive than buying a complete stack from Taki or QMtech

limber token
#

True, next logical step would be an mms with integrated de10 clone. 😁

#

That’s save costs, cause no need for the double connectors and ports.

dense umbra
#

Richard really needs to revise the MMS design to bring it up to date with the 9.2 stock design. The analogue video scored very poorly in testing

dense umbra
#

The part that makes me laugh the most is while the MMS is open source, he doesnt open source the add ons and the prices for what they are is silly

meager dove
#

What is the URL for MMS? Not familiar with it and am curious.

limber token
#

True, but I guess that the timeframe is short now. In mid 2025 we will see the first next gen fpga boards in the price range from about 350$.

#

MMS are some tousends, haven’t exact counts

dense umbra
#

yeah they are closed designs

#

I would put it more in the hundreds tbh

limber token
#

I assume that mms is below 10k in total

dense umbra
#

Koala only did a run of 110 units, Ricardo did one run possibly two ?

limber token
dense umbra
#

I dont remember Hebers numbers being anywhere close to that

#

a few hundred possibly

limber token
dense umbra

yeah but how many restocks has he done though ?

limber token
dense umbra
#

Heber stopped selling and making them

limber token
#

Last batch from Heber was 1000 or 1500 units.

dense umbra
#

which is why they open sourced it

#

and why they focused on the add on carts

I haven’t understand them, cause Ricardo sold them well.

All these add on sellers have limited time left though with Takis console plans especially as he stated all models will come in for less than the DE10

limber token
#

QA a single PCB is much cheaper as a stack of boards. So if he only takes the stack price to make more earnings

#

Also save handling and shipping costs.

#

But for a moulded case you need quantities, so I believe that it make no sense to produce the stack addon boards. But we will see.

dense umbra

He stated he would carry on making the Mister Pi range and supply to the established hardware suppliers.
The new board revision with built on SDram will help too

The add on boards are cheap to rattle out

Whenever it will make things easier for him one board two SKUs etc

#

limber token
dense umbra
#

There isn't much to gain with the revisions though
It was only needed for the Saturn at the time and then Sergey changed the memory controller

cinder crane
#

Please let me know if there’s anything else that should be pinned in relation to MiSTer Pi. Thank you.

limber token
dense umbra
#

My Taki SDram is around 148mhz but anything over 140mhz is fine

My QMtech soldered on SDram is stable at 160mhz

#

32meg modules will test at 160mhz too I found out

limber token
#

Iirc my mms ram is 145 and the BGA ram was 141 or 143. But you are right, 140 is already fine.

dense umbra
#

It's a chip lottery

limber token
#

faint dune
#

My retrocastle ram is stable at 137...I have considered replacing it

cinder crane
#

Saturn core and that Batsugun core push the ram

faint dune
#

Yeah. the only time I have noticed a difference between my retrocastle and my misteraddons stacks is that misteraddons can run AVP on the jaguar more often than retrocastle

wary turret
faint dune
#

how dare you

#

I wish I could put my misteraddons stack in my main AV rack rather than the retrocastle stack, but the IO board's soft reset button keeps gumming up the works (can't reliably reboot the stack via smart outlet)

wary turret
faint dune
#

I don't know if I have a 5v3 barrel jack. I suppose I could try the one that comes with the retrocastle stack

#

but then the io board doesn't function at all, yeah?

wary turret
#

No IO board is powered by barrel jack as well

#

Oh yeah you need a splitter to two barrel jacks

faint dune
#

yeah

wary turret
#

That’s the traditional mister power method so you may not have them lying around

faint dune
#

I am sure I can find one of those somewhere

dense umbra

compact pine
#

I bought a mister pi turbo stack to be used as a living room console. I don't really understand sdram at all. Is the blurb on the product page correct and that all existing console cores including saturn, psx, and n64 should "Just work" with the turbo stack?

compact pine
#

Thank you. I think my confusion comes from seeing "dual" and "single" and "xxxMB" mixed around in discussions

cinder crane
#

SDRam isn’t a mandatory purchase for the MiSTer FPGA to “work”, but a ton of cores require it now so I’d consider it mandatory.

faint dune
#

but the turbo pack comes with one stick, so you should be totally fine

compact pine
#

I believe my "Main" mister is the 2x 128mb pack from misteraddons

faint dune
#

only core that requires two sticks right now is jaguar

cinder crane
#

Dual ram isn’t required and for the longest time wasn’t used at all, but now that we’re hitting the limits of the de10, some cores are relying on it to get around limitations of the hardware.

#

And yeah, Jaguar may end up requiring it once the core devs are done improving it

compact pine
#

I've never even heard of the jaguar so i'm going to pretend I've still never heard of the jaguar

cinder crane
#

Err it needs it now and it’s not looking likely it’ll work with one stick

faint dune
compact pine
#

Does anyone know what the snac adapter included with the 2nd batch mister pis look like? has a photo been posted anywhere?

That was one of the best eras of video games because companies were shipping weird but functional controllers. This wasnt a power glove or activator, this was a real controller that was built well, but only worked for one game. Same with that R4 controller

jagged pecan
faint dune
#

no no, that's when we moved into the wacky collectors edition era of controllers. there was a sweet spot where we had weird controllers that were the absolute best option for a game or two

#

the chainsaw controller is not the best controller for any game

#

The Jogcon is a game controller developed and produced by Namco for the PlayStation.
Originally released in 1998 as part of a special edition package with R4: Ridge Racer Type 4, it was designed to combine the function of a steering wheel controller, while maintaining the size of a standard PlayStation controller. This is accomplished by a dial ...
