there we go

hearty oar
#

it's crazy how well both this hack and the vanilla game work

#

if it's not perfect already it must be close

compact lark
#

I wonder how the core will look on composite once the VI filtering and AA has been implemented

dusty tusk
#

Didn't AA get in recently?

inner garden

texture filtering did

you can add a post process to do some blurring lol

dense chasm

Okay! I just hooked up the $30 SAFFUN controller, and it synced up no problem and works fine. Latency isnt atrocious, but I'm also not super sensitive to it.

inner garden
#

Dreamcast is the best n64 controller

#

I confirmed it

wanton sun
#

no idea if i did something wrong, but it doesn't work. i start as small link and even if i teleport to the tempel, the door is closed, maybe you can share the savegame instead?

marble cargo
#

Anti-aliasing was included. I think he meant the hardware based smoothing that gives Nintendo 64 games that muddy appearance?

dense chasm
#

The joystick is still too sensitive, so I gotta try that unstable mister file. Can you update the file while its running via wifi?

vast delta
#

Idk if it has been mentioned here, but Blast Corps is particularly sensitive to the reported Analog Stick values. I remember some weirdness happens when the value is greater than something around +/-90

dense chasm
#

Will that be adjustable in the core eventually, or is that a higher level problem?

vast delta
#

Iirc, the character stops moving

good evening

#

is there such a thing as an N64 controller test rom?

dense chasm
#

Hmm, just tried starfox, and it looks like the joystick isnt mapping correctly

#

Cant go up or down in the start menu, and the plane gets stuck at the top of the screen when i start moving

#

Right and left seems to work fine, bc i played a round of mario kart no problem

I guess i'll try out that test rom real quick!

#

should i try the NSO controller kernal update?

also, where does that go? it doesnt have a file extension

Just checked the controller test rom, and up and down on the joystick do not work. Anyone run into this with the sofun controller?

I think the issue may have been how i set up the sofun controller in the joystick setup. I didnt do the analog stick, now it seems to work

From the looks of the latest conversation therein, possibly over in #general-banter

rose elbow
#

very tempted to do DKR now knowing it's apparently beatable! i haven't touched this game in so long :-)

wanton sun
rose elbow
#

this WIP core really drilling home how bad emulation was all over again :D

#

i've tried looking at these games in the past and it never cut it. but booting DKR instantly triggered the nostalgia aha

manic basin
#

Yeah, it's amazing what has already sort of surpassed it in terms of original feel in the core. I sorta skipped N64 emulation mainly because a lot of stuff didn't feel right. NSO did a pretty good job with some games, which revitalized my interest, but this core has me actually excited.

rose elbow
#

i also spent a wee bit of money on an ebay n64 wee while back and that's been great .. but that comes with needing controllers.. retrotink/mods, everdrive.. etce.etc.

#

i never got it hdmi modded so it's still a WIP in itself hehe

#

left in development hell LOL

eternal ravine
#

I remember someone here got 1500 POUNDS for their HDMI modded N64

rose elbow
#

wow!

hearty oar
#

that's bananas, surely it can't be that expensive or difficult to get installed

eternal ravine
#

I think it was when the mod part was scarce

rose elbow
#

i wonder when that was

#

there was a wee period of the N64digital being out of stock, before GEM came along

#

but 1500 ?

#

wild

eternal ravine
#

Nintendo fans be ham

rose elbow
#

that seems like one of those deals where u put something up on ebay and u aim high purely coz u know people love to bargain and barter

#

and then someone jumps in and buys it LOL

eternal ravine
#

Yeah people with spare money will snag stuff if you present it well and it's rare
Especially during periods of increased fomo

rose elbow
#

ive put things up on ebay for absurdly generous prices and people still get all funny about it and insist on paying like $2 less or no deal

eternal ravine
#

I'm fixing to sell all my Nintendo handhelds
That smaller size n3DS is worth a bit now

rose elbow
#

oooh

#

i had a massive collection of handhelds and sold them

#

i kinda wish i kept more but also.. they were not being used at all tbh

#

i also wish i tried that smaller size New 3DS. i got the XL and you'd think, having big hands myself? XL would be good. but it did the opposite, the XL cramped my hands way more than anything else

#

can't make heads or tails of this stuff sometimes

eternal ravine
#

Yeah I find myself squinting at them and trying to see more detail
I appreciate them as art and inventions, though

hearty oar
#

I love my n3DS but the little stick nub thing is absolute pants, willing to bet its rubbish on any used one you buy

eternal ravine
#

I was playing DSi games on the n3DS last night

hearty oar
#

I wonder if anyone sells replacements...

rose elbow
#

n3DS ive been interested in again purely from a modding/getting video out of it kinda point of view

#

coz ye i did not really enjoy actually playing on that thing at all

#

the 3D is nice tho

hearty oar
#

it certainly is a hand cramping device

rose elbow
#

ahaha yea

#

it might be the weight ?

#

i dunno

#

it was really bad tho

eternal ravine
#

It has so many little controls and I like the cover etching

rose elbow
#

niiiice

#

i love the sness-y button layout

hearty oar
#

I've got a drawer full of those faceplates

eternal ravine
#

It feels like candy in the hands

rose elbow
#

XL was a sham lol

#

(imo!!! purely coz it gave me cramps) LOL

eternal ravine
#

I'm a fan of the "bronze" DSi XL
But you kind of need to have it on a table top

hearty oar
#

eh, this little one gave me cramps too

rose elbow
#

the ds lite never did for me

hearty oar
#

squared off edges and cramped controls I think

languid dune
#

I struggle with handhelds a lot these days. My neck gets really sore looking down at them.

rose elbow
#

ya

#

well, i dont mind switch but it depends on the game a bit

eternal ravine
rose elbow
#

Vita was very very nice ๐Ÿ‘Œ

eternal ravine
#

Handheld N64 would be nice
Running real hardware, not emulation

languid dune
#

If only Sony didn't abandon it so early. And go with the proprietary memory cards.

rose elbow
#

oh ye

#

i mean

#

sony went in with the completely wrong approach kinda

#

cos they were trying to get like Uncharteds and Killzones out of it

languid dune
#

Strickly as a piece of hardware, it was amazing though.

hearty oar
#

I quite like the feel of the Switch Lite in the hand

rose elbow
#

but it eventualy just turned into an indie machine

eternal ravine
#

I have an massive PSP library loaded on a PSTV

rose elbow
#

nice nice nice

#

yeah PSP and Vita were both great

#

cost of Vita was insane and not really 'worth it' but still a fun machine

#

still never got a switch lite lol

#

with the number of revisions and things always coming down the line i figured something was bound to come sooner or later

eternal ravine
#

I had one of the Asian ones, but sold it

languid dune
eternal ravine
#

Oops, I shall continue in other channels

languid dune
eternal ravine
#

All I'm saying is, some people are going to have their HDMI modded N64s hooked into a Tink 4K
While others will use the MiSTer core
faight

hearty oar
#

I'm going to have my RGB modded N64 hooked up to my PVM...as soon as I get around to actually RGB modding it

#

this core really hasn't helped my motivation in that regard

rose elbow
#

and some people use their MiSTer into Retrotink 4k

#

maybe 2 people

chilly ember
#

My n64 is gonna stay stock because of the core

eternal ravine
#

I want menu scanlines

languid dune
#

Once both Saturn and N64 are completed, the MiSTer will be such an insane retro gaming device. It already is, but that's next level shit!

rose elbow
#

yeah

#

i was poking around on google/reddit last week and searching things like "reddit mister fpga n64"

#

and just reading all the comments of people saying it's not possible :D

eternal ravine
#

And JT is getting into Konami's best arcade games

rose elbow
#

even from a few months ago ahah

hearty oar
rose elbow
#

i wouldn't have purchased an n64 off ebay couple years back if i didnt have similar doubts myself!

languid dune
#

And it'll be better than any N64 emulator.

rose elbow
#

hehe

#

๐Ÿ™

eternal ravine
#

Wii has some cool N64 games in the Virtual Arcade
480p

hearty oar
eternal ravine
#

Plus they can upscale

hearty oar
#

but emulators like Ares, Simple64 and current Mupen with parrell RDP are very fast and accurate

rose elbow
languid dune
#

I'm personally not a fan of upscaling the 32/64bit generation of consoles. I feel like it benefits the PS2/GCN/Xbox era much better.

eternal ravine
#

PS2 emulation is a rabbithole

rose elbow
#

i feel like my experience with n64/ps1 was always, every game was a case by case basis of running into issues and searching google/reddit,... troubleshoot, digging thru settings, resetting things, troubleshooting

hearty oar
#

PS2 would benefit so much from something like parallel RDP - the software renderer of PCSX2 is actually pretty decent and quite compatible, it's just waaaay too slow

#

and the HLE renderers are full of bugs

rose elbow
#

mister just makes everything so much easier ahaha

spice shuttle
#

I played and completed Star Soldier Vanishing Earth (one of the few overhead shooters for the N64) perfect ๐Ÿ™‚

#

I am sure this has been asked before but can't seem to find it does anyone know which version of Mario 64 works? Or the patch?

chilly ember
#

Patch is here

sonic kiln
#

I finally got my n64digital installed but the system kept resetting randomly. due to a loose power supply, putting tape around it fixed it. the hw is really starting to show its age (though it is a power supply problem).

I can't wait for the core to be finished lol

rose elbow
#

oh wow! that sucks

#

easy fix but hard to motivate when n64 core is coming along and showing such amazing progress :)

#

controllers is such a pain point as well for this period... ps2 also with those pressure sensitive face buttons + ebay being flooded with fakes

remote hatch
#

I bought my first N64 some time ago, just for comparison purposes

#

right after purchase, I knew I couldn't play with this pad and had to buy a replacement with a different analog spacing ๐Ÿคฃ

rose elbow
#

man

#

i would gladly use n64 controller but even just finding one in decent condition can be tough

#

i quite enjoyed the retrobit controller, it's a bit cheapy feeling and not totally the best but it gets the job done and the stick was working decently

sonic kiln
#

you can refresh the analog sticks with kitsch bent parts apparently.

#

I still have my childhood n64 controllers at home.

rose elbow
#

yeaaah that was something on my "to do" list

sonic kiln
#

i think they are in decent conditon

rose elbow
#

at one point i got the NSO n64 controllers and put them aside in cupboard praying for the fpga core to come along ๐Ÿ™ ahahaha

#

my childhood system is a bit more technically my brothers so alot of all that stuff is at his

#

but i managed to grab my ice green controller

#

and funnily enough it works better than just about every 2nd hand controller ive got from ebay or local game stores

remote hatch
#

I'm unlikely to fall in love with the N64 right now, but there are some very good games I'd love to play

rose elbow
#

grow up with it much?

#

im trying to conceptualize visiting the n64 as an adult without the nostalgia and it's quite an odd concept for me hahaha

remote hatch
#

Amiga , SNES, Playstation ๐Ÿ™‚

#

I was not convinced by the N64 at the time and the games were very expensive

versed cairn
#

I asked for a n64 as a kid, but my dad got me a playstation. He said it was better, but really he just wanted to be able to get games for me by burning them.

rose elbow
#

truly a glorious time ahaha

#

playstation was also awesome to be completely fair

versed cairn
#

the big hitters made the n64 look sooooo cool. now I know that the library was small, but at the time all I wanted was oot and golden eye

rose elbow
#

yeaah

versed cairn
#

I ended up absolutly loving the playstation in the end. crash and spyro were amazing

rose elbow
#

ive been replaying spyro again recently and that game always blows my mind looking at it. it feels like an outlier on the ps1 a bit

versed cairn
#

I was too young for most of the best playstation games, but really you don't need many games as a kid

brisk edge
#

I was a lucky kid that had both, however, that just meant my budget for games was like maybe you get 1 playstation and 1 N64 game a year lol
We got most of the higher profile N64 games, but we often opted for ps1 stuff because some of it was discounted. And then renting games kinda filled in the rest

rose elbow
#

about 1 game a year was for us too. everything was rentals pretty much

#

1-2 (christmas and birthday lol)

brisk edge
#

Luckily my cousins had an N64 so they snagged good stuff that we shared

#

Them: Mario 64, Goldeneye, Wrestling Games
Me: that very mediocre tom and Jerry fighter

remote hatch
#

Tekken , Ridge Racer, Final Fantasy, Soul Blade, Metal Gear Solid , Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, well N64 and Mario didn't count at all for me hehe

versed cairn
#

it's interesting how word of mouth and experiences change your perseption. it seemed like n64 had all the good games to me back then. now I know the ps1 has the best library ever but I didn't know about metal gear till the ps2

remote hatch
#

of course I also played on the N64 , my friend had an N64 and five games hehe , Wave Race made an incredible impression on me and still does ๐Ÿ™‚

versed cairn
#

golden eye was a big moment for me as a kid

#

I thought my ps1 was so lame after that cause it could only do two player lol

rose elbow
#

i had step brothers with a ps1 so def played a good chunk of it. i feel like.. Tony Hawk was maybe the only game that was better than anything on n64 LOL

versed cairn
#

I didn't even know there was an adaptor

hearty oar
#

Ps1 games were amazing when I finally had a Ps2 years later and could just pick loads of them up for cheap

brisk edge
#

When used game stores had loads and loads of older games for like anywhere between $5-$30 was such a good time, it was a lot easier to convince my mom to get me a cheap used game over a brand new one.

rose elbow
#

i think as a kid i probably felt n64 was better than ps1 even tho ps1 had a ton of great stuff also

versed cairn
#

I strangly played tony hawk first on n64 lol

#

it's def beter on ps1

rose elbow
brisk edge
#

Definitely got my mileage out of that too

#

Really wish they didn't destroy the cart and labels so much in hindsight though

rose elbow
#

thats where i got HSV Adventure Racing (the australian version of Beetle Adventure Racing.. but with holden cars lol). that game is great. it's more like Need For Speech on the n64 but with boost power ups and crazy short cuts and things

#

slightly playable on current core but visuals arent all there yet

hearty oar
#

I have quite a lot of Ps2, Xbox and Gamecube games with yeah, rental labels, or just complete wrong box because the rental shop lost the original

rose elbow
#

also the clock timing is very variable atm which effects the music which is pretty funny

hearty oar
#

didn't really care too much as long as the games worked

rose elbow
#

my copy of Ocarina of time was an ex-rental actually. i borrowed my mates manual and did a shitty ass black and white scan and print job just so i could have something for the manual

brisk edge
#

Hell yeah

hearty oar
#

haha, that's a good mate

rose elbow
#

and ye. having a bodgy version of the game like that with a dodgy manual or stickers made 0 difference to the enjoyment of the game

brisk edge
#

I committed the sin of just printing out gamefaq guides, not realizing how long some of them were lol got into quite a bit of trouble with that

rose elbow
#

nowadays games have entered collectable status so im pretty sure selling a copy of Ocarina of time with a black and white manual would probably lower the estimated value if anything LOL

rose elbow
#

speedrun

brisk edge
#

It certainly adds a charm to picking up a used copy, it has a story to tell. Like when I buy cart games I tend to back up the previous save files, kinda like to keep the past owner's legacy around in some form.

#

Also lol somewhere in my aunt's house there's a folder with like at least 200 pages of random gamefaq guides, a lot of fighting game move lists too lol

rose elbow
#

youtube Gameplay videos changed everything LOL

versed cairn
#

there use to be a notes section in manuals. I remember picking up one of the old sonics and it had the level select code written in pen in the manual

#

so cool

brisk edge
#

Definitely found some notes where people put actual strategies and stuff for bosses

#

Always cool to find that stuff

rose elbow
#

the kid writing strategies in rental manuals

brisk edge
#

Or who wrote the fatalities down in my MK2 manual, you were a true hero looking out for everyone

duke64 is running pretty well since the z-buffer fixes yesterday, you can't see enemies and items through walls anymore. there is something weird going on with the hud though, almost looks like z-fighting between hud elements

#

the numbers of your health will flicker on and off and stuff

hearty oar
#

might be a precision issue if they are just textured quads overlapping each other? Who knows lol, certainly not me

vapid hawk

its probably the best way to play duke on mister now

Just wondering, once you have your boot1.rom does switching between PAL/NTSC happen automatically or is there an option to set it? I'm looking at the core for first time in a few days and not seeing an option in the OSD.

vapid hawk
#

i think it switches automatically and also there's a manual toggle

remote hatch
#

yes, in debug menu

worn delta
#

How do you get to debug menu?

vapid hawk
#

you just click on it in the osd, its called debug

#

not hidden or anything

worn delta
#

Ah sorry, being dumb and not scrolling down

#

It's not in debug but in System Setting to change NTSC/PAL

#

Do we know if it does autoswap based on the .txt file or we need to set that before testing PAL?

#

Actually I can maybe test

mortal panther
#

Yes, it is supposed to happen automatically if you have both properly named boot ROMs present. It's based on the information present in the N64-database.txt file.

mild ether
#

I didn't know it was automatic. I got to get rid of the PAL boot1.rom so I don't get false positives for the Brazil PIF not working.

remote hatch
worn delta
#

Nice, just tried and it does indeed autoswap, that is ace

wanton sun
#

yes it does autoswap, but it also means you should have a boot1.rom. If you never really want PAL you could ignore it, but there is no warning or anything

zip should be fine, it's chd that has to be added to cd cores

Could be wrong.

Not sure if there is a better way to do it, but a buddy and I have been playing through old rpg's in "co-op" by basically merging the controllers and splitting the characters ala how Final Fantasy III has multiplayer on the SNES.

player_1_controller=usb

We just threw this line in an alt config so when we select that config it basically mergers all the controllers to P1

It works best though when the controllers are the same models otherwise the mapping can be a little strange, but YMMV

Here's hoping that a boat load of other games inherit its fixes.

Always appreciate you explaining how you fix various things. Extremely interesting to me.

deft tree
#

i always wanted to like Pilotwings but man 64 especially is painfully tedious on a lot of levels

#

and controls so rough

wanton sun
#

@weary palm actually reminded me of it. I had it in my emulator but didn't implement it in the core yet

short hill
#

maybe my version of ocarina will boot now too

quasi storm

Is that also why, say, road rash 64 runs but doesn't detect the expansion pack?

wanton sun

maybe

I always wanted a Pilot-wii-ngs game, but it was not to be. 3DS game is okay, but like a cut-down version

I liked Pilotwings 64, but haven't played it in decades

yea i havent played it since the 90s

mortal panther

I enjoyed it... for a while. The novelty wore off pretty quickly.
...like the Wii.

I've been looking forward to seeing it working in the core, so this is really awesome news. I knew immediately when I saw the map haha.

Does your script Vampier overwrite the old .txt file if there is a new one?

I haven't been checking discord for a month now and it seems this core now run games!!

manic basin
orchid nimbus

@worn delta it does if there is a new one

worn delta
#

Nice

quasi storm

Wait a minute... why the heck would pilotwings even care about the memory? It doesn't even support the expansion pack.

orchid nimbus
#

@worn delta you will lose custom entries

worn delta
#

That's fine

orchid nimbus
#

just make sure your update script is up to date

pallid falcon

I made the script recently to include the database

Too bad the rest of the game is so-so. Then Legacy of Darkness came out, almost as if Konami said, "Yeah sorry about that. Here's a better version"

orchid nimbus
#

this part of the FAQ uses PHP to pick the latest file

desert nest
#

Re: custom entries, if anyone cares, you can just break them out into something like N64-database-addendum.txt and add a line after the copy in the script that'll cat N64-database-addendum.txt >> N64-database.txt -- works great for me.

orchid nimbus
#

same logic is used in the update json creation

pallid falcon

That bomb mission - I loved every second of that

I tried the Update N64 script. I got all the files but opening a game gives a black screen.

Might just be like my luck with the Saturn core

quasi storm

#

Yeah it's an MD5 hash of the ROM (uncompressed of course).

#

I think the original entries in the database are actually hashes of the first 4K or so of the ROM, but there's some fallback logic that will take the hash of the entire ROM as well? That's how I've been doing it at least, and it works.

quasi storm
#

That's odd. I swear I tried generating an MD5 for smash base, just to compare, and figure out if that was the right algorithm, and it didn't match. Probably something I did wrong.
