I know for NES there's headered and headerless dumps and there's a lot of discourse around what should and shouldn't be in the dumps, but I think that's different since AFAIK the dumps don't actually contain any headers and they're instead added in.

NP, I just learned it a few days ago so don't take anything I say as gospel either.

In addition to the parsing/hashing, there's also byte order and endianness to worry about. v64 has swapped bytes, z64 is the format that is baseline, n64 is little endian, and N64 is like Z64...so not confusing at all. (I HATE that they used capitalization to differentiate a file type).

Do people remember the SMD or HEX formats for the MD/Genesis back then ?
Or even better, the SMC, SWC, FIG and SFC ones for the SNES.

Early SNES and Mega Drive/Genesis dumps had the same kind of problem with different copiers/dumpers giving their respective formats + headers but a consensus was done in the end of the 00s (with redumping groups).

I was in favor of a splitted format, as we don't have to change the ROMs files if a mistake and/or an update have to be pushed/corrected.
And for pure preservation, it could be better.
Your CHR chip died, you can reflash a new one directly with the correct CHR file without to rely on a specific software to extract it from the (headered) concatened file.

But users wanted to have a philosophy at that time "1 game == 1 file" and emulator devs don't wanted to have an external database to rely on + creating an auto-updater.

So, we're with iNES 2.0 now.
