#ASCII - MSX

I spent some time exploring the Disk Station series when I first got MSX flash cart
Good times
Love this one (and Penguin Adventure ofc) :D)))
Oh is that Penguin Kun Wars?
yes 🙂
I played that for the first time on MiSTer when it's arcade core came out
Have you played the Konami penguin game for Famicom? A fave of mine
Oh yeah
Yume Penguin Monogatari
But keeps getting fat, womp womp
Yep the enemies dont try to kill you, they just throw food in your mouth and make you fat lol
we know why 😛
beeru ~
Yeah he'd scarf down omuraisu for sure
Balance it out with vitality drinks
I want some so bad, it's driving me mad
Who made black blue?
it's a very old screenshot, one of the first core version lol
I had this one
Damn these are AI?
yup
Fucking hell, really good
I mean, a skilled painter could do that, but how long would it take
Where did everybody live to have this much exposure to MSX? Japan?
MSX was available in Europe as well
I tend to forget that. Did a lot of Japanese games see release there?
A fair amount yes, though certainly lots didnt
Big in Brazil too, if I am not mistaken
yeah in South America - Argentina too
they even had their own variants
I kinda want one but it's not the most compatible model (base MSX2)
please tell me why the controls in the game "time rider (time curb)" on msx 1chip do not work, what could be the problem?
Brazil
Finally got a good 10x image of the #MSX R800.

The routing is CRAZY.
🧐
@fallen summit
Do the "smooth scroll" hacks take advantage of the Panasonic MSX2+ 5.37 MHz mode
And are they even smoother on Turbo R?
Having a real MSX session tomorrow with a gaming buddy and want to show him the hacks
But I only have a Panny MSX2+ now, no Turbo R
only the VDP - and they might
Will the MFR SCC+ cart allow me to play the "voice" hacks for Salamander(?)
I have a MFR SCC+ as well as a real Snatcher Sound Cart
I never understood the requirements for some hacks
push the snatcher card in slot 2
it needs dual scc
I tested for Victor back in the day
I have found a couple MSX2 doujin albums with full arrangements of the respective soundtracks, in FLAC
If anyone wants them let me know
Just got done with a good MSX session using real HW through an OSSC, projector, and home theater system
The music was pumping
COMPILE and Konami, predictably
Went through some Disk Station volumes, games, etc
Pleasure Hearts
The good stuff

this part would be really good in Kings Valley 3 😄
It's interesting that MSX got both an exclusive Gradius 2 that's a completely different game and a sequel to the other Gradius II.
And unique salamander too
yup. With crazy names like Zowie Scott. I used to think names like that were localizations. Boy was I wrong.
I find it interesting that some late Colecovision games are Konami MSX ports. Cabbage Patch Kids (Athletic Land) and Antarctic Adventure.
The SGM ports?
No, these two are BITD
Oh okie
Cabbage Patch Kids has a player editor
Great game for vs. player as you strive for speedrun dominance
Don't fall down on your bum-bum and cry!
I don't think that's in the cart version. I think it's in the MSX and maybe the Adam version, though.
Yeah the MSX version lets you change the hair and clothes
We just were playing it yesterday
Those SGM module games are interesting. Stupidly, all have working dumps but Gradius. There is only one dump on the internet and its a bad dump and wont boot in anything.
But I have a weird love for single screen action games
It helps that Pixelboy released a few of them on the Atari Age forums.
Speedrunning CPK is fun because each screen is a specific series of moves you have to execute, try to nail them first time
I have a full working set, except for Gradius
I dont think a working dump of Gradius SGM exists
I might have them
If your Gradius SGM boots in the Colecovision core let me know
Yeah - these games would actually birth some game mechanics or features for the later games (like Gradius II - Gofer's Ambition)
Send them my way, I'd like some~
Could be fun for my Parodius/Gradius history videos someday
I DMed over a link.
If anyone is a Furrtek patreon, I'd be curious to know what the results of this poll are:
https://www.patreon.com/posts/project-schedule-90090090
I would have picked the 1st option too - but since r800 is in my interest 🙂
Cool, you can read old MSX publications here
https://issuu.com/msxblog
they can't wait to play these sweet tunes that totally don't sound like mid 1990's boilerplate dos midi
Opening scene + playthrough of first scenario.
Played on a real, s-video modded Super A'can.
http://www.diskman.com/
@blissful cradle the MSX has SCC/FM/PSG/OPL4
and since recently a lot more whatever you want sound chips
the amiga just blasts out PCM.... sweet samples
that game just has a lot of fart noises
well and PCM is what this sound chip is. i'm showing my ignorance here, but is there much value in decapping PCM chips? honest question, not throwing shade, i just through pcm was pretty much just samples and there might be some filtering, etc...
suffer the farts
sulfer the farts

is there any way to play a .bas file in this core? i'm trying to play this homebrew: http://ags.indiesj.com/Entry/26/
Is there a walkthrough somewhere for setting up this core? Looks like the first step is to run that sd card utility, should it be run on your main Mister sd card? Thanks!
see pinned messages the bottom link 🙂
for anyone wondering, i ran the .dsk file first and that sent me into BASIC, and then i ran the .bas like the FAQ says. awesome game! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yEzNfbhx4Q
Heard about this MSX homebrew through my long time online friend Rani Baker, who sadly passed away last week, so this playthrough and the pain in my wrist for playing this on keyboard for 2 hours are dedicated to her. RIP Rani. Get the game here: http://ags.indiesj.com/Entry/26/
Played on MiSTer FPGA, MSX core!
Dang, that's like a horror version of Cabbage Patch Kids by Konami
this looks intimidating but it's actually easier once you figure out all the enemies
I shall speedrun it forthwith
Apparently there were CAD programs for MSX too back then... My first use of FD Soft CAD 3D and what it produced 😄
me neither 😄 I just clicked randomly, as I do for any software I don't know to use 😛 or too lazy to RTFM
but for sure you can do nice things 🙂 picked this up after reading on msx.org
Holy shit that’s pretty incredible imo
Hi guys,
recently I found this intriguing software: a CAD for MSX, most impressive MSX 1!

Sorry - HERO …. Ducking HERO….
Mine would just be all Japanese games and would also annoy Vampier
Mine would be all Konami and COMPILE and would annoy Vampier
I like HERO, but it seems odd to me that ports like that made it so high on the list
Perhaps what that person really likes.. is ZX Spectrum
Good ole clive
I probably will get thrown out and apologies if asked before but is there any plans to do the V9990 video board for mister?
nope
not that I am aware of - it's also a pretty obscure piece of hardware... but I guess with the MSX3 (if it ever will be released) it will become more the norm 😉
Well, furtek recently shared decapped pictures of a v9990? That might be an avenue someday
I have one of the v9990 cartridges (but only an msx2, no turbo r)
well unless you play certain games you don't need a turbo-r (Illusion City)
MSX2+ would be nice to have though
and there are a handful of v9900 games out there
nice bomberman clone and several MSXDev entries
@fallen summit https://game.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/news/1539569.html
yeah - not sure what to tell you - it's a Pi Zero with emulation
For MSX2, MSX2+ and MSX Turbo R This game features: -Smooth and fast vertical scroll -Msx Music (fm pac, etc) -MSX Audio (music module, etc) -OPL4 (moonsound, etc) (only available for Panasonic 2+ or Turbo R with at least 128k of RAM) -MSX 2+ and Turbo R optimizations (12600 simulteneous colors) -English language The game requieres an MSX2 with ...

This looks cool too
@fallen summit do you think this would play on the 1chip core?
Made in basic and has quite a lot of bugs
Ohh ok
@potent abyss it needs the gfx9000 extension
Ohh okay. Same for Highway Fighter?
The Sunrise GFX9000 is a cartridge released in 1994 for any generation of MSX computers, built around a Yamaha V9990 Video Display Processor. The V9990 is based on the never released Yamaha V9978 VDP, which was supposed to be in the MSX3.
Yup
You can play it on openMSX
I can set that up yeah
The openMSX channel on YouTube has a nice tutorial by some guy with a Dutch accent and a JPL shirt on 😉
I basically installed the core in order to play aleste; what other classics should I hit on msx?
@tardy shuttle
I would start with COMPILE and Konami games, chronologically
Those alone will keep you busy for awhile
Thanks y’all
Aleste 2/Zanac/Zanac-Ex/Final Justice
Hi. I'm having trouble getting any SCC roms to work with the MSX1 core. Most of the non-SCC roms seem to work fine. I've tried a few different BIOS files I've seen mentioned, but none have helped.
Just out of curiosity - which SCC roms?
I've tried a few: Knightmare, Gradius 2, Yie-ar-kung-fu 2. Anything with [SCC] in the filename fails to load.
Thanks. Do you mean the Slot A ROM mapper type?
Is 'auto' mapper an actual mapper type or does it mea "automatically detect mapper type"?
Ah. OK. I found the Gradius 2 rom (SHA1 FD7B23A4F1C2058B966B5DDD52CF7AE44A0EEBB0) listed in your database with Remark "Needs SCC in slot 2" and Dump "Bad". So I guess I need to try to insert a ROM with SCC chip in slot 2, unless this particular rom is broken anyway.
Alright we are cooking now
Maybe you can explain it to me too =P
You already have used up all your MSX help credit 😉
Guess the neat SCC Master thing wont be running then, alas
yes that's the konamiSCC mapper
I already told you
not the MegaSCC cart you're putting into your MSX core
there is a rom layout and then there are those settings
assuming you use sofarun you just have to manually select KonamiSCC in the settings
@potent abyss
Could find no such option in 1chip core for KonamiSCC specifically, set it in MSX1 core but no SCC games would load at all in slot A or B
It shows the glitched green screen when I try to load it in 1chip, so Ill just open it in OpenMSX
Is there any type of saving on the msx1 core?
Ahhh gotcha reading about the original hardware now
So user disks and tapes pretty much
Everything I’ve thrown at the msx1 core is booting so far
Knightmare is kind of addicting haha just would be cool to save high scores
You can use game master for that
What if I’m already a Game Master?
you're not
Captain N gifs intensify
I mentioned yesterday in #dev-talk about making a wrapper system for MiSTer which would be an all-in-one computer with keyboard+mouse for development. I think MSX fans (and anyone who's used C64, Amiga, etc back in the day) gets the appeal 🙂
I had a C128D when I was young but never did much with it other than play a few games
I really liked Qix, I dont really remember any other games other than that and Alf lol
Has there been any new news about the MSX3 platform?
It feels a bit like an old man sort of noodling about without any real chance of it being made
@potent abyss
Does it run in 1chip?
1chip doesnt have specific mapper toggles AFAIK beyond the megascc cartridge option, but MSX1 does
you can do that in the settings in sofarun
on the game select settings
and then you can set the mapper
🤔
Yup
The game itself is even worse
The original was very controversial
Yab yum used to be a famous brothel in the Netherlands
So it’s based on that
And that’s the backstory for that game
There is no accounting for taste I suppose
Only a couple notches up above Custer's Revenge for the 2600 D:
when I was writing that core there was a bug in bachelor party and it made me so sad to debug
after spending hours starting at that stupid game, wracking my brain to try try to figure out why the paddle wasn't rendering correctly, I discovered it was simply the difficult switch
Imagine 1) having an idea for a tasteless, offensive game then 2) spending the money and development time to implement it and nobody telling you, or not thinking for yourself, "maybe this is a bad idea"
start labeling those games with
Nice XD
different times and juvenile kids with basic and a keyboard
I made a demo regarding a teacher that I had at school once
it became a thing of legend after I showed it to a friend at my home
his last name was Kerkhof and that translates to graveyard
yeah but a lot of these are made by grown-ass adults
Looks like a Kancho game or smth
this looks like fun

Abandoned MSX Project
Wow nice
Thats the biggest MSX I've ever seen
I still kind of want this one
The wavy's front facing FDDs are always cool
I like this concept art for a PSX-based MSX-style computer https://androidarts.com/Sony/Sony.htm
Right! quite a bit more ram though lol
Maybe it would support smooth scrolling
You'd hope... lol
I was playing Andorogynous last night and damn does that get choppy
Oh wow I just learned about https://segaretro.org/AX-990
The al-Alamiah AX-990 is a dual MSX/Sega Mega Drive home computer manufactured by al-Alamiah (العالميه) from early 1990s. Distributed in Arabic countries, the computer has a small switch on the back of the unit to toggle between the computer and Mega Drive functions, which are accessible from a cartridge slot on the left side of the machine.
I want it so bad
It's using composite video out.
Also, it's probably a mega drive clone, not an official megadrive.
Now I don't want it
ngl I still want this freakish device
https://shop.supersoniqs.com/en/home/74-playsoniq.html
PlaySoniq - The Multi-expander for MSX
Please note that on average it takes about three months to complete your order. Because of high prices for genuine working C64 SID chips and Sega VDP's we do not stock these components in large quantities.
The Playsoniq consists of about 150 parts that needs to be assembled, and a lot of those are rare. We ...
Huh, they have a few items I don't remember seeing
https://shop.supersoniqs.com/en/20-msx-hardware
oh wow!
I would like to have one of each item they make
Have a massive line of carts in the slot expander
https://www.msx.org/wiki/Sakhr_AX-990 has a photo of the insides (direct link https://www.msx.org/wiki/images/7/7b/Ax990d.jpg)
Sakhr Computers was a Kuwaiti company (Al Alamiah co.) that was selling MSX computers imported from Japan in all of the Arab world. These MSX were localized by Al Alamiah and rebranded for the Arabic market.
Notably absent is the Yamaha sound chip (as far as I can tell)
hurm.
I think its that unbranded TA-07 9615 chip next to the Z80 (on the genesis board)
Almost 10 years later, Mapax has just released a remake of its first game for MSX called Mr.
new v9900 game
I combined all MSXDev2023 entries into 1 zip
unaltered
I have one, one of my best MSX computers
Hmm for some reason it rarred the files - didn’t even know I had rar on my computer
been enjoying the msx1 beta core!

omg someone made one of those designs!
without the fdd (maybe a mt32pi instead) and the cartridge slots ofc, that would be a nice housing for a MiSTer too, i would guess/hope lol
Everybody loves that little A1 pad for MSX
Vampier sits in his ivory tower with special modded controller
lol, inspired by the other Arne's design , I wanted to transform a HitBit FX1D into a MiSTer case. I bought one as "junk" but actually was (still is) fully functional.. So yeah.. got a real MSX instead 😄
this one i mean
If you've seen their PSX mockup, I'd love to do that with a mini ITX MiSTer
This was my best MSX controller, now sold
Check out the awesome prose
Now I just use a modded OG Genesis controller
such Japanglish lol
For Pampas & Selene (digital version), There is 3 versions. One is usable on OpenMSX but using a specific mapper not present on the MSX Cores, other one to be used by flashing MegaFlashRom SCC+ SD but this one is also not working on the core of Molekula. The flash process failed during the process (write error).
I managed to flash a smaller game like Zanac EX using MegaFlashRom SCC+ SD it works correctly. I tried to flash also a rom with the same size of Pampas (Aleste2 hack rom) it fails at the same position during the process.
I think maybe it is an issue on the core but maybe someone managed to play on the MiSTer. Thanks for your feedbacks
❤️ NES FTW
Use the force Picard
It’s nice to be able to bind up to a trigger button also for these games where up on the dpad is jump
Looks interesting
There is a nice SCC hack of Akumajo Dracula on MSX2 IIRC
The msx version looks hard af, haven’t actually tried it yet though
Its obtuse and doesnt have gameplay as tight as the FDS/NES/FC version but its interesting and has some unique things about it. Kind of a predecessor to Castlevania 2 in its own way
Will definitely jump on it at some point! I think I grabbed the version you’re talking about
Do y’all ever just hop in VC and go through random games?
Are you a big shmup player?
I love them, admittedly Im not the best at them though
Aleste 2 is great
Did we get Thunder Cross cores? The closest thing to Manbow line of shooties IIRC
Kind of forgotten Konami games
Not yet, though JT is saying a new Konami arcade shmup is coming out this Friday
And speculation abounds
I had a Thunder Cross pcb for a while, Im fond of the game
Does Manbow 2 amount to much? Fan-made, right?
Its not great =\
alas
Just my opinion
I was playing it and out of nowhere random downsampled stuff from metal slug
Im good thanks
Theres good homebrew on MSX mind you, but that aint it
Hard to top the original Manbow, aside from scrolling limitations
Aleste 2 is probably the best shooter on MSX
Aleste 2 and Rude Breaker are nice companions to MUSHA
Aleste 1 is good on SMS, but the flicker on MSX is cray
Rude Breaker is PC98 I thought, my brain might be fried after work though
Yep. I'm just referring to the Aleste world of games
Oh okie ^_^
oh mp83 and Lars18th teamed up 🙂
Well I can confirm this boots at least
It’s looking like an odd one
Not much controller support in this game, I gotta get a better keyboard setup
You are right
Better than the original SCC OST?
I dont think so
Guess the MSX game for the last 5 images
English translation I hope
Did you see my post about MSX translations doing the eggerland 2 remake and also turning it into eggerland 4 😉
Nice I’ll check it out!
https://msx.org/news/challenges/en/msxdev23-29xeldenring - amazing, all I can say 🙂
If you're a regular MSXdev stalker follower, you where probably wondering
wow very impressive!!
I talked to Santi about the release 🙂 that guy is seriously impressive in what he does
needed to get some clarification about the version numbers that msxdev uses vs what he uses
```From MSX Magazine February 1985 issue. In the article introducing the game and production staff for Rollerball,'' Satoshi Iwata is introduced as the person in charge of the production of character creation tools, which are somewhat difficult.'' Next to Mr. Iwata was Mr. Satoshi Matsuoka, the person in charge of the development of what would later become Fugaku (a rather difficult one).
that's a lot of big names right there
Satoru Iwata = ex CEO of Nintendo
Satoshi Matsuoka >> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satoshi_Matsuoka
Yie-ar Kung-fu
@wicked dawn yup 🙂 these came from @samor in another discord server
Hey guys, any idea on what's going on with the FANTASTIC MSX2 core? It's been 6 months without updates on https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/MSX1_MiSTer/tree/MSX2test/releases, and the core never got to update_all
I‘m very much waiting for the full version of the new msx core and I visit discord here every day but I’m sad that I haven‘t heard good news in a long time. Maybe the developer is very busy. I earnestly hope that his work will continue.
Last time Molekula said it was full of work, so progress is a bit slow. I haven't seen anything since then I think it's been about 3 months
#1056033525922537542 message
Ah, he must be snowed under a TON of work then
I hope he's doing well, he's the most dedicated MSX FPGA fan
What is missing from the new MSX2 core that could be added to make it better than it already is? I hadn't really delved into MSX before getting a mister so I'm genuinely curious
2+ and Turbo R support?
And for that reason alone, it deserves as much time as it wants, I'm happy that there is someone committed to bringing a better msx experience to everyone, I started to like it even more after this molekula core
We will certainly be delighted with a new update when it appears.
Y/C support?
There are actually a few games which support MIDI music also
illusion city is one of them
I had a Turbo R + MT-32 setup for a bit and the Illusion City intro is pretty sweet
if only it had a good translation
I never really played the game
i have seen a few things that are going to be announced at goto40
this weekend in Amsterdam
going to be fun 😄
ok guys
I couple of months ago I posted pictures from Illusion City
we were working on something cool
and since the lead dev has posted this I can now make this an official announcement
Translation of IC for MSX Turbo-R
Wow, nice
Hope there will be an "HD install" version available, and it can work on MiSTer's core..
I just saw this. It looks so cool but the buttons are a bit low?
I see what you mean, but it's still good for an MSX controller
Pretty sure it's a rejiggered Famicom controller and they put that small sticker over the Select and Start button holes
I like it better than how Famicom looks
Weird, they have Famicom-style controllers for Switch? What does the mic do on P2??
I guess maybe it transmits input levels like the original
Yeah I guess maybe it would work for Zelda?
hhm yeah I think you're right-that MSX controller is basically Famicom.
I don't know if I would enjoy yell-to-jump, but I'm not every user.
We must never forget
Turbo-R only
I wonder how long that game actually is
The game I really want to play through is Shin Maou Golvellius
Emulator it is
MSX1 or MSX2 version?
played a bit of Knightmare on this beauty yesterday
Id want one if it was msx2 (so it could run mostly everything)
I'm guessing MSX2 since he used the word "Shin" and I think the MSX1 version would just be "Maou Golvellius"
what brand is that?
2 disks - there is an professional English translation
it's on a certain VHD created by NosferatuMSX
@fallen summit General: https://www.msx.org/wiki/General_PCT-50
The PCT-50 is the combination of a television and a MSX1 computer in one unit. It was released by the Japanese company General in the very beginning of the MSX history and was available in two colors : silver and red. The MSX computers produced by General are called 'Paxon'. PCT means 'Paxon Computer TV'.
I'm looking if openMSX has it yet as a config
funny to see the carnivore 2 in the slot
コナミSCCのチップ回路図を公開します。シリコンそのままの回路図です。
Playing games in an MSX sure sounds like a Knightmare
That’s not fair, getting mad at me in the #1056033525922537542 channel is @fallen summit’s job
I have never seen one of those
the MSX has lots of fun games, give it a try!
Oh I’m sorry, I was making a bad joke. The MSX is really cool and thanks to the awesome community make that software pack on the MiSTer I’m able to enjoy it!
#GOTO20 is where the real announcements happen
@bright rock grown ups are talking about old stuff - why don’t you go and play with your duplo legos? 😉
Or monkey academy on the MSX1
Cabbage Patch Kids
He can use the character editor to create a Robby
😢
I should stop, someone will take me seriously one day lol
also I should play more MSX
It's pretty foundational for JP gaming
But I will admit it can be a bother to play on real HW, due to prices and how flash carts work
My MSX2+ looks razor sharp through an OSSC via RGB, which is nice
But I'm still going to sell the whole setup soon
Need to try out the current openMSX
It’s a fucking MSX3 you absolute dork!! It’s not yet released
LOL that makes my trolling even funnier
MSX3
Old before birth
Don't get grumphy!
It gets annoying when people like @bright rock try to undermine your love for MSX. How dare he question my religion for this old godlike computer. I know he is young and inexperienced and probably was dangling in a diaper tree in china when the MSX was released…. But seriously …. Do not blasphemy against our heavenly sky daddy Mr Nishi!!
I would gladly play more MSX if my OG setup were less convoluted
Or we had a core with full support thru Turbo R
It seems like it could be cool to have openMSX running on a tiny pi setup that I could carry around
Sedai Linux
let's continue
guess the game
both are MSX1 games btw
this one is better -removing the other one
this is Eric according to Dall-E 3
Eric and the Floaters (MSX version) in Japan is known as "Bomber Man"/ bakudan otoko. Basically this is the first bomberman game.
(yes this is bomberman - the origin story)
DESCRIPTION
Mopi Ranger is an Action game, published by Konami, which was released in Europe in 1985.
In this platform game you control a man that collects pine apples and he's being chased by snakes, rodents and bats. When he has collected five pine apples he has to go to the wooden bridge that then will appear. That bridge will lead him to the next level.
I know. I was thinking of that game, but the mice looked more like the ones in Hustle Chumy. NM. They do look more like the ones in Mopiranger.
Here are 3 more to decipher 😉
Cyber maze runner?
Blade puzzle virus?
Uhm.. Illusion City, and Eggerland maybe. Dunno the tank one at all
Snatcher, battletank and puyu puyu?
ok for the tank game - excep this one had too many tanks
you got 2 right 🙂
could have been Snatcher since it has the same feel to it - It's Illusion City
2 for the same game series....
couldn't get the space ship right though
uhh
Its a mixture of biological and mechanical, which is a gradius/salamander trope
Aleste I guess
Dia51 gone wild 😄
Abadox
Bonus one 🙂
not for a game but while I was making the Aleste one this showed up
which is damn awesome
I requested all drawings the the style of Chris Foss
That's cool
Good thing it has a big eye to shoot
BTW the SMS Aleste is pretty great
Manic shooting action
I like to use the SMS core for extra sprites
Imagine if the MSX3 had been more like a Genesis
the Blade-Runnereqsue pic on the left would make a great cover
Tank Battalion?
guesses on new pics. First in second row, SD Snatcher. Second in second row, Chase the Express. 3rd in 3rd row, Metal Gear. 1st in 5th row, Yie Ar Kung Fu 2.
3rd in 4th row, Laydock?
Cheated thru Aleste for SMS last night
Basic graphics but I like how they get more and more bio-mech as you go
Flashbacks to early days of shmup training
The core works a treat with turbo, extra sprites, and FM music
yup - the bird on the cannon is a stretch btw 😄 - Only it's a girl with Latok Merch... she has blue hair and seems to be Obsessed with Latok 😄
The car and the ghost is F1-Spirit
and the straw hat guy in the field with ghosts is Pippols
She wouldn't happen to share the name of a certain comic book character that was spun off from Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Fray?
Hi no Tori
Hen Hen Hi No Tori
or 'Hi no tori: Hôô-hen' to be 100% exact 🙂
I got the cart here - you can't outMSX me 🥳
that sounded cocky lol
But do you have a Turbo R
I don't have any JP computers. I just use MiSTer for MSX stuff currently. I do have a couple JP Saturns, an AV Famicom, a couple JP DCs, and a JP PSX, though.
😄 \o/
I thought x68k was more expensive out there
A complete-in-box XVI would probably be quite expensive also
A few years ago, you could get a minty Turbo R GT (computer only, no box etc.) for about $550 on Yahoo
Add the pandemic and the CIB status, and you get wacky prices like above
the yen got cheap and everyone did a rush with buyee
and everything shot up even on yaj
If I had to buy one high-end JP pasokon, it would be this one:
The thing about X68K though, is that many of the famed ports are available already on MiSTer
Or will be arriving before too long
To buy an X68K, I'd have to be more interested in Doujin probably
And recap jobs
I'd just like a 286 era PC98 but lol
To me, PC-98 would be fun to explore
Not sure how you get one set up with warez, disk emulator, etc
there's floppy emulators out there that are compatible
I bits to use CF cards as hard drives
I wonder if there are community HDD images like for X68K
yeah well, there are specfically for nekoproject
np2fmgen is my favored pc98 emulator
and is probably I guess just what I'm sticking with because lol at buying a pc98 now I guess
The PC-98 experience:
Hey, this looks like a cool visual novel ... game
Wow, the graphics and music are awesome
Let me click a few of these dialogue options and see what happens...
👀
bow chika-wow wow
Uh, what?
Is it worth a recapped x68k with sd2sci for 1300? (without keyboard and monitor)
sounds like a bad deal you should just send that to me and I'll take care of it
On PC-98, porn can strike at any time
I had a fun thing given to me
Code restoration requested by MrBoqvist
Programmed in SVI-318 Basic
came in as a scan from a magazine
someone who clearly didn't know basic typed this in
and then couldn't get it to work
I spend an hour debugging and it worked - cute litle basic program
run #1 gameplay was non existent
switched over to SVI 318 some text showed up
Found a goto that was going to 300 instead of 380 control started working
I found some draw command that was missing a direction and corrected that... all the small L letters showed up as 1 in the code... pretty annoying
so with that knowledge I added 2 more elements
Swedish-made Q-bert clone you can grow yourself. Pretty nice.
MSX0 and MSX3 presented by Dr. Kazuhiko Nishi, Maxim Vlasov and Shigemitsu Yamaoka during MSX GOTO40, the celebration of 40 years of MSX.
So two questions: I want to try the translation for Shiryou Sensen 2: War of the Dead Part 2, I got @fallen summit's vhd release but that one isn't in it. Is there a way to load the dsk files and play? Second, I tried loading the first game and get an sram error from the game. Is there more setup that I have to do to get it to work? I tried matching the config directions included with the vhd
@slim stirrup you know you can download the VHD and if you click on the file in windows it will mount as a virtual harddisk
you can then drag and drop files onto the VHD
XX:\collections\disks
I did not know that, thanks for the info!
it's how I update the VHD myself as well
Hi no Tori is pretty cool
Better than the Famicom adaptation IMO. Though different chapters of the manga I think
I replaced the label on the penguin adventure cart
Photoshopped something together
I assumed that at first, but apparently, both games are based on the same chapter, which was localized as "Karma" for the Phoenix manga adaption.
Gao is actually the main character in both games, but I assumed it was a different character since he's shown mostly from the back in the MSX game.
Ahh
Not familiar with hi no tori terribly well. Ive only seen the uchuu hen ova adaptation because yoshiaki kawajiri worked on it. A strange fusion of art styles, that one.
Did their awesome painter die shortly before adventure penguin?
No
yes indeed
I know I’ve asked before but is there like an AmigaVision or Flyn’s style quick and easy MSX launcher/collection for MiSTer?
My brain is too tired to learn another computer platform.
Installing OS/2 burned that part of my brain out for a while.
The 1chip core only uses VHDs, and the good ones use sofarun
Yes, it has those. There might be a certain vampire type person around here somewhere you could DM regarding those.
I sshed into my mister from my phone and wget something promising from a nosferatumsx I found
Or an esoteric youtube channel with a setup guide that has a description that can help you out
I love MUHSEX
Muhsex too is also pretty nice
lol Happy New Year!
hi there, I'm trying the MSX1 core for the first time and I'm unsure about how to setup the bios. I found an archive with the bios in a .MSX format however the core seems to expect .rom files : should I only rename them to .rom ?
thanks, I've just tried both test cores and I have a black screen when launching them
I tried to rename the relevant .MSX files from the linked biospack to boot*.rom as listed by @fallen summit here : #1056033525922537542 message
but without success (black screen and my MiSTer hangs so I need to do a hard reboot)
the files SHA-256 in the message do not corresponds to the ones for the .MSX files in the pack anyway
yes I tried it too (that's the one which does not start at all on my side)
I could play a bunch of roms from the official MSX1 release but not from the test releases in the MSX2test branch
Use the official OCM core and the. VHD for now
Does BIOS database included in update all not grab all the MSX BIOS files needed?
OCM based MSX core has bios included on VHD (massive pain to build those VHDs from scratch)
MSX1 core bas BIOS roms
MSX2 core has system packs that need to be loaded
the MSX FAQ I wrote was for the unreleased MSX2 core
I just have released my port of @artemio's 240p Test Suite for Colecovision, MSX1, and SG1000 under GPLv2. It includes all the tests that can be performed by the TMS9928. Tune your TV with your Colecovision 😉 #retro #retrogaming #colecovision #msx https://github.com/nanochess/240pTestSuite_colecovision
I'm missing 'Manage Webhooks' permissions needed to perform this action.
you're lying
I'm missing 'Manage Webhooks' permissions needed to perform this action.
maybe it's forums thing
I guess despite the good intentions this bot will be problematic
maybe it's an intermittant issue, ill give it an hour
and then boot it
Oh nice, does the 240p TS work well with the current MSX1 core?
I saw it was also being adapted for Colecovision and SG-1000
yeah I talked to Oscar about it 🙂 it's nice... yes should work on the msx1 core
240p Test Suite - Oscar Toledo Gutierrez (2024) [original] [8209].rom
there we go - the first entry of 2024 added to the romdb
that's already being done on another level
https://github.com/ValleyBell and https://github.com/grauw have been working on that with Artemio
it hasn't been done for the mister core afaik
Hi guys. Could anyone assist me in getting MSX set up? I'm having a hard time finding a step by step guide by googling. I understand that MSX is one of the easier computer cores to set up.
I followed this https://youtu.be/rEXPdeAKvAc?si=mJKJsEN6gEl6cgAX
When it comes to Japanese PC's the Sharp X68000 reigns supreme in retro gaming enthusiasts minds...but the MSX2 is a really fun retrogaming piece of hardware that runs PERFECTLY on MiSTer FPGA and you should def play it...so let me show you how!
Big thanks to Vampier for providing...
Thank you. I tried that, but the link he provided in his description for the vhd doesn't seem to work.
It is just an archive link, it just doesn't load?
it linkks to NosferatuMSX's page which has several packs to download, but none was a vhd.
I just realized the one I didn't try isliterallyy called "direct boot vhd"... i think Im all set. thanks!
the menu that VGE's MSX core boots into a menu "sofarun" but mine doesn't do that, 1chip is just black screen, the other cores boot into a blue screen with a prompt. his video skips right to the menu.
When you open the core can you select your vhd from the osd?
@fallen summit would know best
which core do I want to use 1chipmsx or msx1?
I used the 1chip
the directboot images are just collections of games that boot directly
nosferatuMSX made those because of popular demand
that seemed to work, mounted a vhd in 1chip and i'm in! thank you!
i've got one called bootVBS.vhd that's about 2.7gb
Ew
That one has zip files compressed with the highest compression levels
@ivory spruce check dm
May I just invade this conversation?
I went to nosferatumsx archive.org site, got "Release 2023-02-25.zip", which has a boot.vhd of about 1GB. Sent that to my MiSTer, went into the 1chip core, did the changes in the readme.txt and got nothing. Tried following the video (which doesn't do the changes), got nothing. Any sugestions?
Should work
It doesn't, unfortunately... just a black screen
Does it need bios, if using the vhd?
this is an etremely dumb question from a super noob, but did you mount the .vhd and reset?
Yup. Selected the first option, to load the vhd, and then manually reset. I also tried marking the option that resets after loading the vhd.
I should have assumed, sorry
What I don't know is about bios. I have none there.
Oh no, don't worry. These mistakes are often prone to happen, so you did good on suggesting 😁
Not even sure if there's another core out there. Mine has a date of march 1st 2023. (23.03.01)
Maybe try mounting the vhd on your PC? Make sure the file is valid and it didn’t get borked when you transferred it to your mister?
Normally with the vhd you have a readme explaining options to set on the OSD did you set them ?
OCM works best in z80 mode no turbo
the OCM VHD has the bios on the VHD thats how that thing works
the MSX1 core needs bios files
the MSX2 core needs bios packs
the OCM core supports up to MSX2+
Just did that, seems to be working fine. Lots of files there, the roms were all there like it's shown in the video.
In the readme there are only some options to set in the core, which I did at first and still didn't work.
It seems like it's something I'm overlooking, because it doesn't seem to be that hard to make this work, since there's a load VHD file right on the core menu.
I tried getting a new rbf from github, but it's the same.
It's probably something dumb, like Shinobi Legions on the Saturn core which you had to disable the pad2 or it wouldn't work 🙃
this case could happens also on real hardware.
For MSX, is your VHD named boot.Vhd ? If it is the case it could boot automatically during the load of the core ?
Could please make a picture of the OSD to verify you used the correct MSX core (OCM one)
Is it case sensitive? it's boot.vhd, all lower caps
The OSD for OCM is all blank.
on the other MSX1 core, it boots to the blue prompt for MSX-DOS
Im trying to copy the boot.vhd over the SD card reader instead of the network to see if maybe the file got corrupted somewhat
The OSD you have nothing on the option ?
yes it is normal ! You can after load cart rom or floppy dsk files
Sorry, I misuderstood. There are options on the OSD, just it boots to a blank screen.
I was only using a controller before, but now I tried with a keyboard as well
I also tried with the turbo option, megascc 1mb and 2mb,with both z80 and r800
Ok so it is the correct core.
Could you please try to set Reset after mount to Yes just in case ?
and try to mount the vhd again
if it is still black it means the vhd on your sdcard is not good
is it zipped ?
Sure. I had that enabled before. Just disabled when I reset settings
Yes
so you need to unzipped it
I already tried copying it over the network
Sorry, no, it's a boot.vhd file not zipped
The zipped files are inside when I mounted it to my pc
Do I need the MSX.CFG that comes with the release?
can you please make a screenshot of your folder games\MSX ?
you can use it it set automatically the right OSD options
should I just copy it to the games folder?
it is on /media/fat/config folder
The other folders were my previous ROMs
the other folders will not be accessible by the MSX OCM core just datas on the VHD will be accessible for information
Yeah, I removed them for now
for the size of the VHD I have that on my side : 1,1 GB (1 073 742 336 bytes)
so maybe there is an issue to copy it on the SD Card
Same here
it is very strange ....
Indeed
I don't understand
the md5sum of the vhd file is 9e2c92db71adc3a2a68c69638bac66ce
have you issue with VHD file on other cores like AO486 ?
Ive never used VHD files before... I only used HDF files on the x68k core.
ok
Trying to see that, but it's taking a while
Very frustrating... I'll try some other time.
But thanks for all the help @karmic rover!
there is a readme file in the package, have you checked it ? For best performance pick the following option in the MSX core (or see included msx.cfg file):
- Speed: Turbo (F11-turbo)
- CPU Type: r800
- Slot1: MFRSCC+ 1MB
- Slot2: MFRSCC+ 2MB
Yeah, I tried that... didn't work
sorry not finding the root cause maybe somebody else will have other tests
No worries 🙂
maybe try with new SDCard
I suppose you did an update_all , the MSX core (the rbf file) is in the _Computer folder, the VHD in /games/MSX, right ?
I did several, last night, actually, because of the updated Saturn core (only to read here that it's not there yet 🤣 ).
But I did add a new RBF file the in the _Computer folder, in case my previous one was corrupted or something.
The VHD is in /games/MSX/ yes.
I think it's the same witchcraft that prevents me from using wired controllers on my MiSTer 🙃
weird.... try to Reset Settings (I think, as I don't have the MiSTer on right now) on the second OSD page of the OCM MSX core ? then try again setting up the core/mount the vhd etc
or just delete the msx.cfg file in the /media/fat/config folder
I already did try that too 🤣
then i'm out of ideas for now :D))
I didn't do that, but I did replace the msx.cfg with the one that came with the VHD file
been a while since I used OCM lol, I mostly use Molekula's MSX1/2 one for an year or so
The MSX1 core is working with ROM files, but I don't have a MSX2 core. Is it the same?
I tried running an MSX2 rom in the msx1 core and it didn't work
officially released (and picked up by update_all script) is the MSX1. You need to use the test release(see the pinned https://vampier.net/MSX/ link)
ohh right
I really need to get myself a dedicated keyboard for the mister if I want to delve into these computer cores! 🙃 also want to try the PC98 and x68k properly
basically get the latest RBF (https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/MSX1_MiSTer/blob/MSX2test/releases/) get the Vampier's Bios pack from his page, and that's all
yes
so games (ROMs, DSK images, VHD etc) will go in the /games/MSX1 folder, same for bios pack files etc
How do I put the bios files?
Oh nice... it reads into the zip file
extract them in the /games/MSX1 folder, that's what I do (well, I made my own .msx files) but should be the same
I use the Sony HB-F1XD mk2, as it's the same as my real MSX
I like better this core for being able to direct load of ROMs, disks etc 🙂
it's not finished yet, but for what I checked/tested, it works quite good for most of games/soft/demos
funny how changing the mapper I got an even different audio output
funny for me that has ever only used an MSX1 decades ago 🙃
And OMG is Space Manbow a jerky game 🤣
anybody know how to get past the game over screen in Snatcher? none of the keys seem to do anything and having to reset the core and load the game up again to try again is a pain
I found a thread on the forum with someone having the same problem but no answers https://misterfpga.org/viewtopic.php?t=5016
Thanks for the help @low barn !!
anytime 🙂
aleste has ascii8 as a mapper
yeah, I ended up trying them out until it worked
ohhh sweet!
wow, there are 16 different roms??
I've been doing this for 20 years'
if I found a rom on the internet I added to it
4 of those roms are not in my collection
see the red crosses on the right side
the once with a heart checked are the ones that are currated to be used
in this case 2 of them
goodmsx and the iphone translation by woomb
I think I got the GoodMSX set. I got it from a reddit site
hehehehe - goodMSX is so outdated
yeah, not from reddit. Dunno where from though 🤣 I already have them unpacked here
got MSX, MSX2 and Turbo R
No, not really... it's been a lot of years since I've done anything with the MSX over emulators.
Geez, the MSX was probably one of my first internet searches when I got internet at home 🤣
I'm part of the openMSX team
I wrote most of the cheats for blueMSX and openMSX
I am the admin of the romdb for openMSX
and then some other stuff here and there
Ohh nice!
I have a ton of nostalgia for the MSX. It was my first computer and videogame.
msx was nice
MSX was glorious
Yeah! And I only managed to have the MSX1, so I used to drool reading the magazines and seeing Metal Gear and all that.
Heck, one of my first internet websites, back in geocities (that's old!) was some kind of walkthrough for The Castle 🤣
I’ve been doing this for 21 years, I win!
The romdb you absolute dork
I did an audit on the MAME MSX bios code
666 values appear form which 318 are unique
23 lines with sha1 values are commented out in de source code
153 lines are marked as 'need verification'
173 lines indicate a bad dump
31 of the unique SHA1 values are not in the openMSX romdb
which means that in all my journey for the last 21 years I did not stumble upon them```
was doing some prep work for the next version of the 240p test suite for the MSX
is there an update to the sofarun msx thing
How many dracula themed msx fans are there?
I've been messing around with the MSX1-test core today, and basically getting it working with loading ROMs directly, but I have at least one remaining question about saving. Also wondering if there's an easier way to do anything I'm doing so far.
- I've put the latest test build of the core on my MiSTer.
- I've put the BIOS pack from Vampier's site in the MXS1/games directory.
- I load up one of the BIOS ROMs. I'm really not sure which one to use, but I've been using "Sony HB-F1XD mk2" because I saw someone mention it above. I'm also not sure which option in the Core menu I should be using to load it, so I've been using "Load ROM Pack X.msx" which seems like a weird option for this, but it works?
- I load a game into a Slot A, and then sometimes change the mapper type off auto if needed.
For saving I think I need to load Game Master into Slot A and the game into Slot B (which I did get working), but then also a blank disk/tape which is the last piece I'm stuck on. I'm not sure how I'd generate that file.
Thanks so much if anyone can help me with this!
Hi for which game you want to save ?
if it is for Metal Gear you need to follow those steps
"you could use Game Master 2 and use save disk functionality.
So you need to put Game Master 2 in slot 1, Metal Gear in slot 2 and mount a blank disk (dsk)
in game you need to call save disk function of game master 2 and save your progress on the disk."
https://www.msx.org/wiki/Konami_Game_Master_2#Saving_Game_State_to_Disk
The Konami Game Master 2 is a sequel to the original Game Master. It supports more games, and has the addition of 8kB SRAM which can be used by several games to save progress or to save your own levels like in King's Valley II.
Metal Gear will probably be the first game I actually play through on this, though it was more just about making sure I could get saving working before trying to start playing something.
My problem is I don't know how to mount a blank disk/how to generate a blank dsk file. Any advice on how to do that?
Here a blank disk
Exemple of command (and you need to generate a dsk file or use a one with datas)
CALL FORMAT
Drive name? (A,B) A
1 - 1 side, double track
2 - 2 sides,double track
? 2
Strike a key when ready
Format complete
Ok
mount dsk on the OSD
Oh cool. Thanks!
And then I guess my main other question for now from above was around how loading a BIOS is supposed to work. Is there a main recommended one to use? And is loading it with "Load ROM Pack X.msx" the correct option to load it, before loading a ROM?
it depends of the use and the MSX Pack replicate the informaiton of each model
Some MSX doesn't have floppy, some have more Main RAM, some could be use with japanese contents
you can check specification of each models
https://www.msx.org/wiki/Sony_HB-F1XDmk2#Specifications
The Sony HB-F1XDmk2 is a cost reduced version of the HB-F1XD. The features and functions are identical, but the casing is a slightly darker black and the red FDD cover has changed to grey.
Ah, I see. That's a very useful link, thank you.
After you get done with that Metal Gear, if you want more of that taste there's a pretty damn good GBC called Ghost Babel
It feels like a mix of the MSX and NES version with a new story and some features borrowed from the MGS games.
It's non-canon afaik but is surprisingly slick.
Ooh, cool.
I still had trouble getting this saving to work, it turns out. 😢
If you are wanting to play MSX1 games then update all would grab you the latest release and BIOS required
Would be fun if they would do something with this
What is the issue ?
The save proposed by the game is save to tape officially
Game master 2 permits to use another way using disk disk and using game master 2 option
https://www.msx.org/wiki/Konami_Game_Master_2#Saving_Game_State_to_Disk
The Konami Game Master 2 is a sequel to the original Game Master. It supports more games, and has the addition of 8kB SRAM which can be used by several games to save progress or to save your own levels like in King's Valley II.
Have you the menu of save on disk following the steps of the website above ?
You will see the menu on this video
https://youtu.be/LY-cHZSeV58?feature=shared
MSX play of Metal Gear using SofaRun game loader (http://lhalter.free.fr/mgr/), featuring ZIP file extraction, JoyMega keyboard emulation and Game Master 2 to save & load game state.
it is the same with the core
the menu save /load options is game master 2 option not sofarun
maybe it is linked to carnivore but the video is just to show you the game master 2 save menu in game
you don't need to check other stuff
no it doesn't
game master 2 allows you to bring up a load/save menu
RTFM I posted 🙂
things back then were.... different 😄
metal gear in slot 2
game master 2 slot 1
or reverse... it's been a while
game master >2< (not 1!)
or if you had any of these 2 versions 😄
@fossil parrot do you know who I am? 😄
oh really 🙂 well I wish you good luck in your MSX endeavors then
sorry to post this video because he doesn't help to understand ...
hehehe 🙂 look what I got here
I can even get to to work with romload
well the core doesn't have tape out
so no f1-f5 for you
maybe f1-f4
the key here isn't sofarun
that was sofarun 2.3 - we're on v8 now
the key here is to load metal gear 2 into another slot than metal gear
so you can do whatever the f---- you want
also see your DM
the one where I call you a n00b
as the translated disk version is included in NosferatuMSX' VHD that was released
JUST DO NOT BOOT WITH CTRL PRESSED
that's all 🙂 good luck and good night
not even a thank you by @fossil parrot 😄
that's ok - there is only so much I can help with limited faculties
I wonder if he ever checked his DMs
For those who don't know - Game Master 1 and 2 have a build in menu to save/load the state in most konami games.
So it's more than just level and life select it has a whole lot more functionality
slow motion/frama advance
load/save state
take screenshots in game
https://www.msxblue.com/manual/gamemaster2_c.htm here is a nice write up on how to access these functions
as far as sofarun we're now on version 8.0 and things have changes since the video above has been made
also sofarun has no capability to redirect tape saves to a file
however it can load from a file if a file has been specified
but it's either ROM, DISK or CAS load
roms and disks can be combined
Sofarun has a special handeling of concatenated disks
