It is an emulator.

Majorly, WoL uses some emulation footage when people are using them, there are no restrictions, like with the speedruns.

ancient surge

That's why when looking up footage, you have to specifically look for original hardware. Anything else you have to take with a grain of salt.

If REALLY necessary, I'm taking some old videos as reference, around 13 - 15 years ago.

Why ?
No Saturn emulator was so advanced by that time and it is sure as 97-98% is was done on an original hardware.

I'm discarding very longplays sooner than 7-8 years too if no express mention of original hardware used.

what's the first console that had 2x analog sticks AND analog triggers?

#

is it technically the psx negcon?

burnt matrix
clear condor
#

Not quite - NeGcon has no sticks and only one analog trigger

#

but it has two analog buttons and the twist axis

warped saddle
#

I guess the better way to word it: what's the first console where you need more than 4 analog axes?

burnt matrix
#

PS2? Every button is pressure sensitive!

clear condor
#

I think it's Saturn's Dual Mission Stick?

warped saddle

what the hell is that thing

burnt matrix

Yeah? It’s twin sticks but what are the other analog axis?

clear condor
#

The dial on top of each stick

burnt matrix
warped saddle
#

but are they a single controller or is it two and the game deals with it being 'one'?

clear condor
#

Saturn SMPC represents it as one controller, iirc

#

imo the motivation for analog triggers isn't just the number of axes; it's the ability to arbitrarily map an analog axis from your controller into the core. Like, even though the NeGcon has only four axes, you cannot map a gamepad's analog triggers to any of those axes, since the analog mapping is stick-based

burnt matrix
#

It’s a super cool idea imo. I also like they you can freely mount the analog stick on either side for left/right handed people.

warped saddle
#

no, I know it's mostly a mapping issue, it's more that I'm trying to sus out if we can get like 99% of the way there with minimal core changes

burnt matrix
alpine pagoda

wise brook
#

the little dial on top of the mission stick might be used in Stellar Assault

which has had an absolutely deluxe fan translation with voice acting and everything

clear condor
#

The throttle wheel is only used in a small number of the games though, and in some cases, such as MechWarrior 2: 31st Century Combat, native 3D Control Pad support avoiding the wheel is still an option.

#

It's possible PD Zwei doesn't use the wheels, and we 100% don't need more than four axes

It’s to facilitate adding an arcade MRA as a favorite in the main menu.

You could and should consider the Morph. I had mine a good few months now and It gets better with every update.

Although I have to say if I could afford the 4k I'd get it for TATE. Though that is coming to morph at some time in the future though the devs do say it's not a priority ATM.

If you not bothered about TATE then I guess the new tink CE is the way to go. More expensive than the morph though. I'm currently rediscovering PS2 in 4K on my morph via passthrough on OSSC.

So I was like...16 maybe? at that point and I had no idea that Duke Nukem for Saturn didn't just have Guns N Roses music in it. It actually fit pretty well. Up to that point I had only played PC and the N64 version (N64 version, highly underrated!). I eventually found a bunch of different games that people swapped the music, or worse, downsampled it to where it was just awful sounding. Like 64kbps mp3. Those FTP servers were hosted by people at their house so you never really knew what you were getting. They'd break them up in 5-20MB chunks since downloading with 56k often got interrupted.

I do not miss those days at all. If someone has got into this any time in the last decade Redump is 100% the way to go.

Hey, you show those arcade veterans some much needed respect. You wouldn't have the advancements in console technology throughout the decades without arcade hardware pushing it further.

Well... except ST-V. 😏

hearty marten
#

I thank you all for having deep pockets and being foolish enough to dump your money into arcade machines enough that the manufacturers realised they could make easy money off you by making it so games ended as quickly as possible 😅

(I don’t actually dislike arcade games. They just don’t click with me as much)

I can relate to that

I've come to appreciate arcade games more as I'm older and just want a quick pick up n play experience

There was nothing quite like growing up during the 'Golden Age' of arcade games in the early-to-late '80s.

I grew up gaming with the NES and then the Genesis. Man I wouldn't change growing up in that era for anything

A good generation to grow up with as all

My first PlayStation pretty much killed any enthusiasm to go to arcades anymore. It truly felt like the 'aracde experience' had finally come home, after so many years of broken promises.

Yeah. I hear ya. When I got my 3DO in 94 that's how I felt too

#

I was like ok why dump money into these now?

high bramble

Well, yeah... with the exception of Super Street Fighter II Turbo and Dragon's Lair on the 3DO.

hearty marten
cobalt rune
#

Yeah for sure

hearty marten

Obviously there were exceptions before that, but that generation finally felt like the generation where developers expected you to finish the game, rather then die 3 levels in

cobalt rune

For sure

#

I spent COUNTLESS hours on my 3DO playing Slayer, Immercenary, Space Hulk, Star Control II

But you’re talking to the man who took ~30 years to finally beat Alex Kidd in Miracle World and Sonic 1 😅

I’m a little surprised that the 80s computers aren’t a bit more popular on here. In Britain computers were probably bigger than consoles for a long while

Sensory nerves are different from motor nerves. It is difficult walking without active sensory nerves for feedback though.

But no, I don't think Sega owned them, for if they did, why not on STV!!! But there are other games like that too, like Elevator Action Returns on the SS, but in the arcade not on STV, rather Taito F3, even though the SS version is arcade perfect and could easiley have been on STV

Hey guys so my Saturn core doesn't load any more since the latest update all. It was working fine, haven't messed with anything. When I try to open it I get boot.rom loading and then black screen. None of my games will load, chd files, just a black screen when I try. And my other cores are working fine. Any advice? (Sorry if this doesn't belong here, new)

Soooo I have a question that I can’t find the answer to. What are the STV’s MRA files and why are they necessary?

viral jungle
open swan

it's because the mame format is usually a zip file for the arcade game and a bunch of files inside representing each of the different mask roms on the board

MRAs are mostly arcade-specific. They have found limited use elsewhere, such as the C128 core.
