#Sega Saturn

I don't have time to dig into this tonight or next few days, but anyone who is digging into Saturn stuff, would be good to see if this disc is out there in the regular places, and does it boot, and if so can you then go on to boot a Photo CD on the core
For anyone not familiar with the Photo CD format, there are some discs which are more advanced and are simple images based adventure games
the cd boots and the samples work
I grabbed an image of the Photo CD OS (Europe) from <My... usual spot>, and the core loads it just fine.
I also grabbed a Photo CD image at random from the same place (Introduction to Photo CD, An - Version 2.0 (USA)).
However, when prompted to insert a Photo CD, the core resets when loading a different disc (as expected).
Don't know if the noreset.txt thing works with the Saturn core...
you can just put it in the same dir
but
I don't think it triggers lid close/open
because when I do put it in the same directory core has no idea the disc swapped
Wonder how the real console handles that, since you need to remove the Photo CD OS disc to insert a Photo CD...
I assume the actual executable is resident in memory at that point
Interesting, many thanks for checming. Good to know the actual CD boots. I wonder what it would take to get the core booting Photo CDs as well. Very likely srg320 isn't aware of this disc, it does seem an obscure one.
Also gang, worth firing up Christmas Nights Into Dreams over the next day. 🙂
It seems that this would be a case of needing to set the open lid flag while switching the disc, and then closing the lid without rebooting
This was a finicky thing to get right on PSX core as well
I kinda want to try the karaoke software, but does the core have microphone support?
I don't have access to my original system at the moment, I will be back in 10 days.
I have my original Saturn hooked up I could test for ya. The problem is I suck at RS. How far into the game do I need to get?
Until Penta, Stage 4D if I remember well.
With Portrait Mode ON.
I've found play throughs that are obviously hardware captured where the portrait doesn't do that
Does somebody see that vertical garbage lines in the Gunbird videoclips between stages?
I saw that recently as well
But I didn't dig into if all my stuff was the most up to date
Anyone have a Saroo?
How do I find the Saturn Test Build (Dual SDRAM)?
@mortal mist my man https://github.com/MiSTer-unstable-nightlies/Saturn_MiSTer/releases/tag/unstable-builds
Bookmarked!
Also: #unstable-nightlies message
@high bramble is that meant for me?
I tried with the noreset.txt and it didn't work so I don't think that feature is implimented. I thought there was a cd lid open/closed toggle like in the PSX core but I can't find it. Maybe a bug report or feature request?
ODEs handle this game by having the discs in order, so when pressing the ODE button, the device simulates a open lid, change game. close lid. The game happily accepts it. Not having a open/close lid is really weird indeed. I wonder if the open close is there somewhere on the core. The open close is handled by the disc drive, a trace goes from the disc assembly to the motherboard directly to the cd lid switch.
Anyone familiar with the link port? Does the midi in have its own opto isolator?
Part of me wants to just directly solder my midi female port to test but fears about wasting time since the midi in may need an optoisolator
@edgy hollow wrong channel? or I missed something about Saturn and MIDI 😅
the later, I wasn't aware at all that MIDI stuff was released for Saturn
Saturn has midi support
Probably not on this core as it's not through controller port
It's used in at least 2 games like sega music school 1 and 2
yeah, I was looking about the topic after your message, that keyboard looks great, but wow it is a collector piece at collectors price
we never use these things, but we like to fantasize we will get time and energy to do 😅
Yeah, my attempt is to build a midi adapter to erase the need for it
Annoyingly, isoldered the female midi port directly and it didn't work
It probably needs the midi circuitry as expected
Which i don't want to do lol
I basically soldered 5v to 5v, midi - to pin 3(midi in), gnd to gnd
anyway, looks like someone on Sega Extreme reverse engineered it
and it confirms my fear
that it needs the whole midi circuit
where difference is they added fuses to this circuit
Holy shit what
I never knew this even existed
They could’ve ported this to the Saturn
2024 has been a great year for the Sega Saturn! Take a look back at this year's biggest stories in the Saturn scene:
https://www.segasaturnshiro.com/2024/12/27/the-top-sega-saturn-stories-of-2024/
Nice to see the core gets an honorable mention!
Yep!
Once the holidays calm down, I need to really put my new MiSTer to work and write up a piece on all the updates over the last couple months
The detailed changes are here: https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/Saturn_MiSTer/commits/main/
The ones with "..." buttons expand to show more info
Yep I’ve referred to that in many prior stories
I want to get some before and after footage though
Have a look at this sometime
I've only seen one for sale a single time
The cart has classic 8-bit Konami sounds on it that you control via UI
Unfortunately I don't have real hardware to compare it with, my bad. In fact, one of the reasons I got invested on MiSTer was because of the Saturn core, since I never had one and it is a notoriously hard console to emulate accurately.
So if you're not pirating warez and it's harder to emulate, then why is it called hard-ware?
a shiver goes down my spine thinking that anyone is paying for warez
I wonder how does current core status compare to mednafen or whatever is the most accurate software emulator
Apart from some VDP2 bugs found recently, the core is far ahead.
Nova is now the most feature complete since this week.
Is that an emulator?
Yes, from Steve Kwok.
Not the most well known, but it tries to cover all the bases as possible.
It passes also the SCSP tests provided by celeriyacon during last summer here.
Some features are missing like key remapping and joypad support and second player.
That's a choice during the development.
In terms of compatibility and usuability, Mednafen is still the better choice.
shiver me tim burton
Ahh but the MiSTer core has them both beat?
If srg320 could fix some issues with Nights and Radiant Silvergun (and maybe a small issue on Princess Crown), the core could beat any software emulator for quite some time.
That's awesome
Not your bad at all, I do that too when I don’t have the original hardware. It’s just the goal we try to achieve but for some of us it’s unrealistic. For example I can’t effectively cross verify on the Saturn but for N64 and PSX, I’m your guy (I have a shitload of games for both systems).
What happened to all the Saturn games you "inherited" from your friend!?
They’re still here, I’m just too lazy to take the Saturn out of the closet and test so I’m not very effective lol.
He’s the friend I bought a Mister Pi for lol.
The law of equivalent exchange.
There goes my GIF quota for the rest of the year! Worth it!
does that friend know you were asking about hacking his home network!?!
wait I'm your friend and I didn't get a MiSTer Pi
Did it get lost in the mail?
Are the Tomb Raider regressions fixed? Talking about the white lines on Laras face that Kuba found
kuba have a partial fix.
Battle Garegga could regress, but I've not checked intensively.
Vacation time now, until Jan. 6.
By the way, @untold cloud is currently trying to make the SEGA Saturn core boot up ST-V ROMs. You can read up on the progress in the #1315008851874938948 thread.
MARS thread wen
We already have a 32X core
He posted this test build.
He warns that it's still in a rough state, so your mileage may vary.
@frail token CANCEL THE SATURN CORE
I dunno what dudes constantly complaining issue is but go make more jokes. If always takes the piss out of their arguments
haha I was genuinely curious though
I mean the core's not perfect but seems like it's getting really close
should be easy to write a bash script that runs on launch and wipes all your saturn saves every year
Is DrNoBrazil joining that debate?
The dang battery running dry is my biggest issue with the Saturn!
Battery death simulation in the core please (not really lol)
There’s always one complainer. Whoever that dude is has been doing it lately. I love people hate me and I’ve never even talked to them 🤣
Man, your comment section is really going wild at times. It could potentially provide enough content for an entire movie.
maybe he isn't on the unstable
comes with the territory
ask him about 'datasheet engineers'
DrChocoboboNo... 🙄
I’m surprised you don’t know him, Cyo is on a lot of retro discords. He was the first to get one of Fixel’s IDE emu devices for example. Seems to dislike mister for some reason though
Seems perpetually grumpy in general
Probably why I don’t know him
I’m too busy in a day to talk to anyone who’s in a bad mood. I’m here for the fun! Where shits optimistic and filled with promise…not shit on because that’s their vibe
I sound like @burnt matrix 🤣
If I recall he is Attract 17's best friend. He kicked about here awhile ago, came across a overly negative and a bit caustic. He may have been banned, I can't remember.
Oh yeah didn’t even look at the name. Yeah I’ve seen him on other discords, always seems very grumpy for some reason. Hope 2025 is better for them
I’m gonna have to grow a lot more asses for everyone who’s in a bad mood to come and kiss 🤣
Yeah not saying turn the other cheek, you’re not awJeebus
Well not your face cheek anyway
Look what you've become!
I already don't like him then. 'Atrac17's best friend' is all I needed to know. 😄
my thoughts exactly
So what is the core lacking? I think if you consider SNAC it replicates almost everything?
Keyboard support, and midi keyboard support are two things. Virtual lightgun support (is SNAC lightgun fully working now?)
DVC, but that is massive
Cheats in?
Ohh, doesn’t even support keyboard through SNAC?
No mpeg or modem support
It may do if someone has implemented the protocols but not sure whoever did SNAC has one. Worth asking though
Oh and Photo CDs don't seem to work using the Photo CD loader disc
CD+G presumably not supported either, but that is in Mega CD core
Music CDs play fine?
Thanks for the insight. The mid 90s consoles sure supported a lot of wacky peripherals.
I haven't been keeping fully up to date, but was there not something about analogue triggers needing to be supported for some controller/games?
Yeah, it works through SNAC but not USB.
I think a few of these last few things aren't terribly complex, but are niche and the core is pretty much out of space and stability could suffer
Yeah, looks like there is no cheats pack so that isn't in there
Maybe these last remaining things and S-TV support will be saved for MiSTer 2
I’d like lightgun support via USB but I could live without the other things, even analog triggers.
But yeah, other than that, it's a true replacement. 😏
The core has come to the point where I’m comfortable to prune the majority of my SS discs. 👏
Yeah this is probably the missing features that most people would appreciate, except maybe cheats. It will take someone who has console and lightgun and skills to implement it though, as was mentioned the other day. I am not sure who falls into that category, but we can't really expect it from srg320 who likely won't have access to these things.
As it stands the core is going to be a fine replacement for 99% of people out there though.
Does the core have multitap support yet?
That's a good question, what is the max number of players the core now supports?
Pretty sure the Saturn core doesn't support CD+G yet, literally unplayable.
I can only assume that is cyo's issue with the core.
Why can't I plug in my own RAM cart?! /s
Does the core support the enhanced videos in games like Lunar Silver Star Story?
I think it’s VCD?
No it doesn't.
Hey guys, Virtua Fighter Kids (USA) does not load when the region is set to auto on the latest unstable. It loads fine when set to USA though, should I report this?
How is the Saturn version of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3? Is it the best version on MiSTer?
Sounds like 32X version of MKII is best (especially with the hack, I'm sure), while Saturn version of UMK3 and Trilogy might be best
I've always liked the N64 version of Trilogy the most simply due to the lack of loading times and a proper Shang Tsung. But between the PS1 and Saturn versions, I've always thought the PS1 version was better due to the lack of dithering, which doesn't look great in the Saturn version.
Saturn has dithering?!?!?!!??
Why in the world?!?
I'm mainly going by the discussion on this reddit post:
https://www.reddit.com/r/SegaSaturn/comments/wzq4cs/should_i_get_mortal_kombat_2_or_3_for_saturn/
Yeah, in anything that has transparency, like the shadows, Smoke's...uhh...smoke, some of the UI like life bar outlines, etc. It's not a ton, but what is there is very distracting compared to the PS1 version.
A Visual Comparison of Mortal Kombat Trilogy for Sega Saturn and PS1 (PSX/ PlayStation). The video shows a Dual Playthrough with the Kintaro character of the Mortal Kombat series on standard difficulty in order to compare the two systems side-by-side whose purpose is of study and learn.
Support my work on Youtube: https://www.patreon.com/vcdeci...
Wow is this a technical limitation of the system? Sounds awful
Yeah, Saturn is kind of infamous for dithered transparencies.
Oh this is Trilogy, is it the same for UMK3?
Not sure about UMK3, since I barely played that game compared to Trilogy.
But I would assume it is.
Actually just checked some UMK3 footage, and it seems that game just doesn't have as many transparencies in general. Smoke's smoke isn't transparent even in the arcade version. Same with the shadows. There is some in the life bars on Saturn, but it's not as bad as Trilogy.
I watched that video but I think it just wasn't high res enough for me to notice
I think the biggest thing between the CD versions is going to be dealing with load times, at least on the PSX core there's faster loading as an option
composite video does a good job of blending down those checkerboard transparencies
Oof
Doesn't affect gameplay of course, but at the very least, if I play CD MK Trilogy, I always go with PS1.
How shitty that an entire console generation later dithering is still a problem for Sega lol
When I played Bayonetta 3 on the Switch, I kept thinking, is this a Saturn game!? Only modern game I can think of that has that much dithered transparency!
wow really
Yeah, it's pretty insane in that game.
Saturn can't do transparency?1??
There are examples, but it has issues with it. The patched ultimate version of Castlevania SotN on Saturn fixes some of it, but not all of it. Not sure how it works when some games get around the issue.
doesn't look like any kind of transparency fix hack is available
there is a hack that changes a few things
I believe the Saturn can do transparency but it wasn't as documented/easy to do so just wasn't ever used.
it can do it its just much much slower at it than PSX
even modern games take shortcuts on transparencies, they're hard
Some games have been able to do a sort of transparency, like in Guardian Heroes. But, that’s just a trick with either VDP1 or VDP2, and a certain backround layer won’t be visible.
Saturn can do various true transparency effects as part of VDP2’s layer compositing pipeline, which is similar to what SNES can do.
The crucial thing missing is useful blending modes for VDP1 drawing. In essence you cannot draw a transformed sprite or any kind of polygon with blending over anything else also drawn by VDP1.
Ran out of space again in this thread. Will Discord ever raise the 1000 people limit? Seems counterproductive, either commit fully or give up on them.
Anyway, anyone punted can just rejoin by browsing. Sorry about that.
Enough. Hodor can drop the door now.
Don't tell anyone, but I nearly punted Robert. The people list shifted while I was clicking through the F's...
That is quite a cull
They deserved it
^ yes 😂
Oh, nearly. Better luck next time 😉
Hi! Does Saturn Core supports cheats? Have anyone tried enabling Cheats for Saturn games on Mister? Thanks.
Am I out of date, or has disc switching been implemented yet?
I'd love to play Grandia again, it seems to work great as far as the intro is concerned
Nope. Not supported yet, sorry
Interesting! Thanks for the info! Does it have a concept of virtual Ram carts?
If it does, I wonder if an image of Action Replay would work?
There's a feature request for it here: https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/Saturn_MiSTer/issues/223
I’m not sure about that, sorry. I don’t think so though
I mean, there are RAM carts but they’re built into the core itself iirc
From memory, the DE10 is very full though. It’s likely that some of the extra quality of life features may not be included if they take up significant extra resources on the FPGA
(That’s just me speculating though)
If the developer of the Core allows users to load custom RAM carts, I wonder if it would be a solution for Cheats? It could "ACT" in the same way as the real Saturn?
I’m not sure how a custom RAM cart would really work - presumably something would need to be loaded from the SD into the FPGA to initialize the RAM? Maybe you could add something to GitHub? 🙂
Any extra chips wouldn’t be supported though
Is the action replay really a RAM cart, or an additional chip that runs stuff?
This short article is in need of work. You can help Sega Retro by adding to it.
Action Replay Plus is a cartridge developed by EMS for the Sega Saturn as an upgrade to the Pro Action Replay. The cartridge has a wide array of features that make it a highly useful and sought-after accessory for Saturn owners, particularly those with non-Japanese s...
It feels to me like it’s a bunch of extra chips - a bit like how NES mappers aren’t actually included in rom files and need to be included in the core itself
But I might be wrong
But I guess all the RAM and backup cart stuff is already there, so maybe adding the extra stuff for action replay isn’t impossible
that would just be cheat support
it's the same thing. you'd have to basically implement cheat support to support the 'action replay'. 'custom ram cart' buys you nothing and in fact would just be a weird layer of abstraction and probably more effort to implement
Or it would be if the developer of the Saturn core build/adds action replay into the RAM? But I think it won't be a elegant or best solution. Users have to enter cheats manually. And not via a text file like .cht
cheats would be implemented like all other cores that implement it
if space is really really tight you could possibly take a look at how the n64 cheats work?
they run on the arm iirc
that only works because the n64 RDRAM is in ddr3
so it is accessible from the arm side
I'm not sure where the saturn ram is. and I think all the cheat carts for saturn had access to the entire cpu address bus, so they could potentially sniff/change anything
damn, that was a removal spree
LOL
Jaimie ain't F'n around. Love that he stopped with Hodor 🤣
I hope robby does not feel inadequate
Look at his profile pic. Robby is a beast.
to be fair, I copied Jaime and followed his lead
I was getting pretty bored by minute 8 and was hoping for a good name to stop on 🙂
Thank you @long monolith for your service there (and by clicking this you’re back in the thread)
Testing
OK, back now.
Wondered what happened to this a few days ago.
I only found the channel name after searching for ST-V.
Then it wouldn't let me post, and the Saturn channel disappeared. lol
We love Discord 🙄
I posted tons of stuff about testing ST-V games on the Saturn core, but in the Dreamcast channel.
I won't repeat it all on here, but let's just say - it's very rough atm, and very few games work. lol
Just to be clear, Jaimie != Kitrinx, correct? lol
Different spelling etc. anyway.
Correct. He and I are not some weird Norman Bates situation
Kitrinx and Rysha, however...
lol
You never see Rysha and Kitrinx in the same room at the same time? hmmm
You just reminded me - I have to do the whole pretence thing later, of enjoying being with the family for an hour or two before midnight.
Joking, obviously.
We usually watch Jools Holland (if he's still around) for about an hour.
Then watch the fireworks from a place called London.
Went to see them in-person a few times. It was awesome the first time... lol
The second or third visit, for some reason, my brother stood behind a tree, and didn't want to move for a better view.
He's almost as strange as me sometimes.
Anyway, Saturn.
I haven't had much time to play games on the Saturn core yet, but it's amazing to see it running so well now.
The sheer complexity and interactions of that system are insane.
For some reason, I assumed Srg would write the core in VHDL.
But turns out it's (mostly) SystemVerilog, which is SO nice. lol
I think London's fireworks are cancelled tonight, the Edinburgh ones certainly are. Weather has been some of the worst for this time of year I can remember, like a winter hurricane.
jools will indeed be ruining music this evening, yes
Yeah, proper grim out
tbh, every time we've had a storm warning down here in Mordor, it's never been that bad.
50mph horizontal rain
Aside from the fence blowing down last month.
Great.
Sounds like the UK.
This place essentially really does turn into Mordor for about five months, after around September.
Good job I hardly leave the house. lol
Plus we have a shed/bar and summerhouse in the garden.
Not that I drink much any more, and try to stay away from spirits.
Doesn't do much for me any more, aside from sleep and headaches.
How many times, for how many years, can you hear an annoying piano version of "You Can Lead a Horse... To Water..."
The best part about the Jools Holland show, is when he doesn't play anything. 😛
Action Replay is pretty much just a flash cartridge, sort of like the backup memory cartridge except that it contains code. There's also a parallel port on it for development use, but the cheat stuff is all just software.
If you put it on to BBC Scotland then you get our programming which is generally better, as if doesn't feature Jools Holland
Or you can go extreme and put in BBC Alba, and get a room full of drunk Highlanders having a party in Gaelic which is actually quite fun
It's utter shit here right now on the south coast
Rain now and again, 50mph winds and the day is only light for a mere few hours, and that light is overwhelmingly grey
I was going to go out into town for a few drinks, but my local is now £6.70 a pint, so I've got three bottles of Westons for £6 from the co op. That'll do me tonight
It's easy to forget how north the UK is, we are on the same latitude as calgary in Canada! I hate the weather this time of year.
I would love it to rain around midnight. May well stop the Artillery barrage everyone and their fireworks create
Mate, imagine how dark and grim if is in Scotland if it is like that on the South Coast. Winters are miserable. Just glad I don't like up in Aberdeen!
On pints, I was shocked when I was in London in the summer and standard pint price seems to be £7.50 now. A mate of mine was just in Zurich and beer is cheaper in Switzerland than London which is mad.
Thankfully I still know a few pubs in Edinburgh I can get a pint of cheap Lager for under a fiver
I remember when I was at uni and it was 50p a pint of strongbow, 50p a shot. This was 2007 though...
Used to go out with a tenner, get hammered, still have enough for a subway and a 99p McDonald's burger at the end
Yeah, could get £1 pint students deals here when I was at uni then as well. Halcyon days. I don't know how young people can afford to go out these days
Took my daughter out for subway yesterday, £8 for a fucking 6inch meal deal. Robbery.
On the topic of Saturn, games were £60 then and now I have the entire library on something smaller than the size of a harry potter novel so swings and roundabouts
You must hate her to feed her that rubbish !
It was her choice...I wanted the pub opposite
I usually do homemade subs, got a perfect Italian bmt imitation recipe along with ripoff southwest sauce. Aldi do imitation subs and the specific cheese subway use
We have a fair few bottles of Sol and cans of Guinness. But I'll only have one or two.
Ordered Corona, but they sent us Sol instead. It's horrible. lol
Was just chatting to my brother earlier, about even the price of McDonald's now.
Used to have the 99p saver menu for a burger.
I nearly ordered McD breakfast for three of us the other day. It would have cost over £30 for three sausage and egg rolls, three hash browns, three coffees, and a Flurry. lol
Dominos is VERY expensive in the UK. But then you do get quite a lot of food for that.
And it would have been Shit Mcd cannot do Breakfasts
Annoyed me when I found out that a plain Dominos pizza in Australia is about £8 equivalent.
Here, it's something like £17.99... for a PIZZA.
I know, McD's isn't great. just very occasionally, I get a craving for it.
I am trying hard not to buy stuff like that now.
Should probably save this chat for general-banter. lol
You’re Australian?
My local Italian, mr mario himself, does incredible pizza, £10.50 a margherita. Dominos is a joke in comparison
I survived another ||demon|| purge!
I honestly don't know why people get chain takeaway pizzas, like Dominos and Papa John's etc. here, you are literally cheaper getting a proper pizza from an Italian restaurant that will be a magnitude better tasting and likely a lot healthier.
To go back on topic... Does it now say Insert Disc rather than Insert Disk in the menu now?
Respawn
Across the pond here in Canada, chain pizza is literally the cheapest prepared food you can obtain - when buying by the pizza. Getting it at an Italian restaurant will almost certainly be 2-3 times more expensive, and whether it's better/healthier or not depends on the restaurant
(of course, I'm comparing against Continental-style pizzas baked in a traditional oven for the Italian restaurant version)
Frankly, two very different types of pizza
Sometimes you crave trash too….the papa John’s large 1 topping for $6.50 in college built up a huge well of nostalgia
Well, clearly the experience is different where Moondandy is

But I love muh Dominos...
UK dominos is just bad pizza, they put so much grease in them
The grease is what makes it so good 🥺
like a gigantic slice of fried toast ?
Exactly that 🤤
I get my pizza from Costco... in bulk.
Is there much promise there?
Costco and Sam's both have great deals on pizza for real
Tombstone frozen pizzas are the best pizzas in the world. Better than any fancy pants restaurant pizza! I have spoken!
I like cheap frozen pizza
I like Little Caesars
"Let's rent a game and some movies, and eat some cheap pizza to start the weekend!"
-me forever
I will go to my grave saying that Jacks cheap shitty frozen pizza is the best frozen pizza.
And luckily, seeing as how much Jacks I eat, I probably am going to see that grave sooner rather than later
me too!
agreed 100%
With a bit of groundwork done, I will likely need some help to figure out why the core is flaky with ST-V atm.
I'm intrigued
I think the first place to look, is at how I'm decoding the address for Cart ROM read/write.
It got a bit more complex, due to how ST-V carts are mapped, which means the single-file binary can go beyond 32MB.
And the ABUS on Saturn is kinda set up as two 32MB chunks.
With two separate Chip Select lines.
In theory, it might be OK with how I have it atm, using one of the Chip Selects as the upper address bit.
But I'm not 100% sure if the timings are always correct.
If they are, then it's probably reading the Cart ROM data OK, but there are a few other bits of logic missing, to make it work properly with all games.
A handful of ST-V games also use custom decryption ICs. Apparently one of them is the same chip used in many NAOMI carts.
So the logic for that would need to be written, to get those few games running.
Thing is, most of the decent games on ST-V had Saturn ports already, so I don't know how much value there is there. lol
(I don't think I can just directly use the address from the CPU to read carts above 32MB, but maybe?)
The start of the ABUS is mapped at that address, on both Saturn and ST-V. It's almost the same hardware, with a few tweaks.
But that means you can't just include that bit 25 in the address.
Since it's always set High. lol
It took me a long time to even realize the ramifications of that.
IIRC, the ABUS address comes from the SCU chip.
I guess this is partly Saturn-related, but I might as well continue this stuff on the Dreamcast server.
Alongside that, I had to add the 93C46 EEPROM core from Jotego, as most ST-V games (and the BIOS) use that to store the settings.
Like the type of cabinet (number of players), Multi-Cart and Standalone modes, Credits per coin, etc.
I don't think the Backup SRAM is being saved atm either. That would need to work per-game, like it is on Saturn.
Or maybe it is being saved, because it's mapped at the same address as on the Saturn? Dunno.
All of those kinds of questions. lol
It also could really do with MRA support. Maybe even a separate core for ST-V, as the Saturn core is using 95% of the FPGA already.
(and ST-V doesn't need the CD stuff enabled, which saved about 10% logic. I have no idea which ST-V games used the SCSI CD drive thing, tbh.)
When a game does boot, though, it's usually very stable.
I left this running hours ago..
From what I've looked up, the only game that used the CD drive was Sports Fishing 2.
Happy New Year, everyone.
Let's make it a good one.
Just watched the London fireworks on TV, but none of the streaming stuff had the music feed on. lol
Well, they did, but not the raw feed.
Watched the Paris fireworks, and it was really good.
remember to fire up clockwork knight for a lovely new years title screen
I don’t trust advice coming from Todd Howard, though
“How do you set the New Years title screen?”
“It just works.”
If anyone had a moment to test a few games, I would appreciate it. It's just a matter of whether there are additional bugs compared to the last core that came out, thanks.
What are the changes?
vf2 and tomb raider works ok , changes for battle garrega caused errors. After undoing these changes everything should work ok (except battle garrega ). I am unfortunately not able to check many games at the moment.
besides, all the existing code is up to date
I wonder why it’s just Battle Garegga
because this game is evil 😛
The final boss is Greg
how do I get the latest Saturn .rbf? I don't see it on the github unless I'm just starting 2025 as a blind man
this one? #unstable-nightlies message
Check Robby’s precious pins
Are lightguns not supported yet?
I assume that the fixes that were made for battle garegga (sprite rendering) do not have quite the right parameters. Apparently for most games it doesn't matter, but for TR and VF2 these changes need some tweaks

It’s my go-to Saturn game
play the arcade version and forget about the saturn version
Probably just need to shell out for the m2 ps4 port
But I enjoy the Saturn extra characters/settings and the ability to turn some shots into visible bullets
just kidding my friend 😄 , I put the core here for people who like to play TR or VF2 until the right fix comes out (and if it doesn't appear then there is an alternative )
It’s amazing how good the vf2 Saturn port is
Once you see how good Saturn does VF2 it kinda pisses you off when you see their botched port of OG VF haha
Mutant gnome from lotr dot gif
1st time testing the backup function
couldn’t really see any instructions, so i made a blank file named it “backup . bin” and put it in the game folder
after selecting the game, and then selecting the backup cartridge, on game boot i was asked by the game to reformat the backup device
start+a+b+c got me to the dash, formatting was as simple as choosing to clear the memory
If the game supports backup after selecting in osd core it will expand the existing sav file or create a new sav file. You can then use it with internal memory or backup.
Well VF Remix is quite good. Just the initial try was.... Not so.
Meh VF must be flat shaded, never loved remix
I love the flat shaded polygons. It was such a short lived aesthetic.
'new star gp' on steam is a lot of fun
???
that was our response to that question too
just kidding. saturn compatible ones like stunner work with snac, I don't think non saturn ones got added yet.
Hey guys!
Is it normal for sonic jam to have jitter on the menus when using direct video
Sure. I was just asking for the official ones. They work?
Did you ever play Bound on PS4? It takes vector graphics of this style in an amazing art direction.
The menus are interlaced
You using the unstable nightly?
I have not, but I’ll look into it. My PS4 is neglected.
It was done by the demoscene group Plastiq
Damn, that is a pretty game.
Light guns only work through SNAC and using a CRT. USB light guns have not yet been added.
That's what i am asking. Last time it wasn't working over snac.
It should, I don’t beleive any changes were done to the SNAC portion of the core.
But I can’t test
Last time i asked snac was already available but lightguns where no compatible
I will test today evening then
Did you ask a long time ago?
About 2-3 months ago
I think light guns have been in for a while, hmmm
I got them working end of sept, while I haven't tested recently they should work for you.
I think it’s one gun only due to SNAC not having enough pins right? I only have one gun anyway so..
Sorry Saturn I have two GunCons but only one stunner. I’m a traitor
correct, limited by io to one port only for all the sega consoles.
How did Sega do multitap?
which console? saturn?
Or Genesis
Saturn had it's own 6 port one, it uses the protocol similar to the mouse, 3d pad, and sticks. Saturn also supported the GEN/MD multitap but the protocol is a little different. Those had 4 ports and there was a couple different models. One had a single db9 plug and the other had 2 db9 plugs to be plugged into genesis. There was also Jcarts for genesis that put 2 extra ports on the cartridge itself to make 4 ports available.
Nintendoes what Genecan’t?!😳
Love your knowledge on this stuff, thanks for sharing
I had support for both saturn and gen multitaps in the old saturn snac builds which is why I know about them, but it was hacky and I removed them to save space. One build I think I did a multitap option for usb controllers also
is there any chance lightguns use less pins than full controllers in some way that could enable using two of them?
Been wondering this as well. I can't imagine between 2 buttons and a light sensor that all 9 (8?) pins are in use. Any ground can be shared so that saves a pin.
Do you know if Saturn Keyboard works via SNAC, Blue?
Well stunner technically only uses 3 wires for start, trigger, sensor but more wires than that are connected internally. I'm guessing those are used for detection. Stunner uses sh2-direct control mode but before that detection is done in smpc control mode. I'm going to guess if you tried to only connect the 3 wires detection fail and gun wouldn't work. Maybe you could force the detection to be a couple stunners and then only use the 3 wires it may work. So maybe not impossible but pretty hacky.
not sure on that, I think it should work but don't know anyone that tested it.
Yeah I just opened mine. It appears fully wired, though it appears to be a standard harness and there’s a chip in there. Bummer.
thanks don't think I've seen that board before, does it look like most of the wires are going to the chip? Don't worry about it if you already put it back together
Hmm interesting. So it has potential?
The other wires might be just tied or pulled high or low. You might be able to fool detection if you recreated that. So you'd have to make an adapter that does this that has two ports and only works in this situation. Then fork the core to change the snac pinout and other code to use the io as 2 ports.
2G?
2 Gun
If it would require forking the core I don’t know how worth it it would be.
Just my opinion though.
It could be an osd option to change things around, but I don't think I'd do it unless it was just an experiment.
You have a better chance of 2G if someone gets usb ones going.
Yeah for once GunCon2 will be superior (as if mister users have friends to play vcop with)
A friend of mine says he has to restart the core to load a CD because there's no eject is he doing something wrong
You have to put the games in their own folders
I told him that but he says it doesn't load the game with the folder like it's supposed to he has to go into the folder first
So he has to select the .cue or .chd file itself? You only need to do that if there are multiple .cue or .chd files to load if it's a multi disc game. If it's the only game in it's own directory then the MiSTer will reset the core when selecting a game.
Yes he says so
Strange - it should just load when selecting the directory.
Is it setup like:
/games/Saturn/Panzer Dragoon (USA)/Panzer Dragoon (USA).chd
Yeah that's what I told him
they really need to check that some operating system hasn't littered hidden files in their directories
Yeah, especially on Mac
This person likes to hate everything and just doesn't want to adapt to how MiSTer does it lol
Maybe it handles zipped folders differently?
it might, but your disk images shouldn't be in zipped folders
We got it sorted out
He's just very resistant to the folders idea even though I explained it to him
just a little thing I am wondering
doesn't Powerslave have a (pathetically tiny) breathing meter, or?
-# latest nightly
other than that I am having a blast going through Saturn games I've missed
That game is good
That would surprise if that's the issue, because I use a Mac and have never had that issue on the core.
Sorry to besmirch Mac - just a hypothetical. I would end up with some temp and hidden stuff whenever I used a thumb drive on one, but it has been a while 😅
Yeah, they still do that - saving metadata in a ._file
Yeah should be top-right. It’s a giant bubble.
Shrinks in size when you run out of oxygen
#spicy-off-topic
Dragon Force, huh?
Dragon Force is the best Saturn game! I have spoken!
I've just got a virtua gun and a Saturn snac adapter.
Please can someone tell me the correct way to set this up.
Under input I can see the SNAC on/off option, but what shoould I set for the gun?
I can only see the following:
Digtal, off, wheel, mission stick, 3d pad, dual mission and mouse.
Also does the gun have to be set to a specific pad e.g. pad1 or pad2
Any help would be great
Cheers
B
SNAC doesn't need to have those other options turned on or off. As long as SNAC is turned on, it should work.
On a CRT at least.
Thank you, so just select SNAC and leave everything else as standard?
Do I need to calibrate the gun, if so do you know how I do that.
C an't seem to find a calibrate menu like F10 for other light guns
I don't have a CRT or a virtua gun myself, but assuming it's a standard lightgun, you shouldn't need to calibrate it at all. But yeah, I'm not an expert on it since I only used the NES lightgun back in the day, and only have USB lightguns now, which work very differently. If it doesn't work, hopefully someone else here more knowledgable on the subject can assist!
I can confirm that the OSD F10 menu is specifically for USB guns though like the guncon 3.
Thank you, that’s good to makes sense, are you using a gun con 3 with the mister?
That's one of the few games I did have for the console... and loved it.
Yeah, I have two guncon 3s. Sadly, no support for USB guns yet on the Saturn core. But they work great on every other core with gun support.
cool I was thinking of getting one, do you have to use the sensors?
Yes, it requires the sensors. I'm using the ones from MiSTeraddons since they're a lot smaller and work better on modern TVs that are really thin.
The original sensors are pretty big and clunky and need to be hung over the top of the TV.
They need to be hung on top of the upper tv corners too
On top of the screen area sadly
Thanks for reminding me I had orange guncom3 from tc4 lying about
Wonder if it's better than the Wiimote, almost the same tech
I know people have had varying degrees of accuracy with guncon 3s, but in my personal experience, I was able to calibrate them to be accurate enough I can remove the on-screen cursor and just aim down the sights and hit my targets.
Even for games like Point Blank.
I have the original sensors and the MisterAddons are just plain better.
imo of course
Where’s your disclaimer about you being a friend of Porkchop etc etc?

Shit I forgot, I’m sorry
BANNED
(Ignore the fact I tell everyone to buy Porkchop shit in the US. But seriously it’s just that good)
I shot the falling leaf in Point Blank on GunCon 3 in a vid. If I can do that it’s accurate
Any one playing Parking Garage Rally Circuit?
It really does feel like a long lost Saturn game, especially when paired with an M30 controller
Yep, it's awesome. 🤘
air indicator only appears when you get the Sobek Mask
yeah, version from nightidive is a mix of saturn and ps1
PS1 core being accurate = 5,000,000,000
Weirdness we think are bugs = 2
uhhhh, disregard that. i thought i was in #1046940919607345272
Saturn core rocks!!!!!!
flobby 😔
more like floppy
you know what, I never played Mega Man X4 on Saturn
ooooh that haze effect and the prolonged intro theme made all the difference!
i imagine it's similar just some transparencies are meshes
I notice when going through multiplat games the sounds are almost always in different pitch than on PS1
okay, I am drunk, I drank two bottles of cider
but I definitely know something weird happened there
Chd or bin/cue?
Does using chd files compress the storage? I know bin/cues are used for multiple tracks, but wondered what else chd is useful for?
Chd I only about saving space. That’s it.
its useful as its a single file, that cant be screwed up by people editing cue files or renaming the bin files without editing the cue
it takes less disk space too
I did a vid last month. Or like Nov. games legit
Redump cue files. Download, make sure your rips are verified as good redump sets and you’re off to the races. You’ll wanna do that with your own rips anyhow to ensure a good rip.
Oh snap, I missed that hidden and Saturn exclusive Chill Penguin stage when I finished X4 a couple of days ago. I should have gone for the Saturn version instead of the PSX version. 🙂
aside from that weird crash to bios (or load to bios?) Mega Man X4 for Saturn has been excellent so far
still don't get analog triggers though right
hmmm, the configurator just names inputs as L and R
oh, dammit
Quake detects them as TL/TR but they don't work for sidestepping at all
Your captures look great, Wes.
my tv for some reason occasionally loses sync with the core and there's a brief moment of discoloration with massive screen tearing
but I know it's not the MiSTer because that never shows up in my recordings on my Elgato Game Capture HD60 X
was looking forward to show that
Yeah, the only way to get analog triggers still is the 3D controller through SNAC. Hopefully some day we get USB analog trigger support.
Right
If we can get generic USB analog sticks, then are analog triggers feasible? I hope so!
A bunch of Saturn games are programmed to reset back to the cdplayer when a disc read error occurs.
the hell happened with that .chd on an sd card then
I was joking about .25% chance of corruption as a feature
I'm sure they are. It's just a matter of having someone implement it into main. Up until now, there really hasn't been a need for them, but with Saturn now a thing on MiSTer, there finally is a need. So I think it's ultimately a matter of when and not if it happens.
Back from vacation.
First 2025 release!!!!
Happy saturnday!
Nice! I like the implementation of the undocumented feature
One thing I would like to bring up is that Cotton 2, second stage, exhibits vertical tears in the background. This has happened before but I could swear it was sorted out a couple of commits ago.
Reopened.
I can't verify until tonight, but I've some reports like yours since the last hour.
Radiant Silvergun is fixed! Core is now perfect!
there's still that random crash on one of the bosses
which I can't reproduce, but I've seen someone have it happen while streaming
but even then, not consistently
you mean one fixed shifted line on the right or left side or the vertical lines that appear while moving ? because the ones while moving are a normal thing
I don’t know what you mean by shifted, but the background has vertical ”screen tear”
Forgot to file the Gunbird bug (garbled video shorts between levels). I will have to test that again with the new core.
I'm missing composite blend on the Saturn core. I use it all the time on the Genesis core.
lower the sharpness to zero 😛
Smear peanut butter on the monitor. That should fix the problem.
I've finished the game without seeing any issue some weeks ago, but I will recheck later today with a new playthrough.
Saturn could definitely use it with their janky transparency issues
I had also seen graphical corruption in gunbird on a previous core, just tried the new one and it looks fixed now
MKT seems to be working now
On CRT it should do the trick alright, but what about led TVs.
just kidding 🙂
Oof, you got me haha.
I have a virtua gun attached to a snac adapter and was playing house of the dead fine.
I tried loading it up today, but now it only recognize the start button, nothing happens when I pull the trigger.
Input is set as follows
Pad1 = Digital
Pad2 = Digital
SNAC = On
Is there anything I'm missing?
Cheers
A
I've checked on my original system, normal so i'm reclosing the issue.
We could see some vertical tearing
With a CRT TV, the effect is less visible.
yes I also checked it on real hw
I don't have saturn with me all the time , but Cotton I have already checked on previous reports and this effect occurs.
Reclosed issue.
Lmao I have a feeling Sonic Jam EU had a bug on ganymede nobody noticed
most likely this is a physical connection issue between the gun and your snac
You should just need snac=on. Yep what Freddo said. Try not plugging it in all the way, leave a little gap
or buy the newer cable where thats meant to be fixed, still need to test mine actually 🙂
newer cable?
he means for snax, there is an old one and a new redesigned one to try and help with this connection issue
Ohh, I should buy the new cable. I got mine a couple of years back I think?
Ok so, I ordered a USB extender cable for SNAC , is this what you mean?
It came the other day and works fine with SNES and MD/Genesis with the level shifter.
Now thinking about it maybe I didn't level shifter the other day.
Got to admit though the connection between the virtua gun cable and SNAC adapter is a bit loose.
I ordered it from Sweden because I couldn't find one in the UK.
They guy from Sweden is trying to adjust his product
He was talking about this cable from mister addons, it has hdmi on one side and works with snax/old snac
@inner token Sorry I'm a total newbie, why does it have a HDMI connector for snax instead of USB for Snax blue USB port?
That is a bliss box style cable for SNAX or level shifter boards using HDMI
Works the same as USB SNAC just a different connector
for use with this which eventually connects to mister through the blue usb "user" port.
Is that the Swedish chap on Etsy Akicus ?
Yes
His listings were not mentioning the need for a shifter board at one point has he changed that ?
Here what he said in an email "It is not required but it is recommended because there is a chance that if you run the Saturn SNAC adapter by itself it can harm the MiSTer due to the voltage difference."
I have a Batch 2 Mister Pi BTW
I wonder if the version of the game, I doubt it though
Considering the Saturn controller is all 5V it really is needed
Good to know
You will find all those third party Saturn ports on SNAC adaptors are on the loose side sadly but the only source for the ports is Ali Express these days
ooh fun
They work fine just not a very secure fit
So with current setup should I connect in the following order: SNAC USB extender cable into Mister Pi SNAC USB port, Level shifter into SNAC USB extender cable, Saturn SNAC adapter into Level Shifter?
Yup
yeah. then plug saturn peripheral into snac adapter all the way, then pull it out a 1mm or 2.
USB extender cable shouldn't be too long, but it's sounds like it worked for you yesterday
gonna capture now
Radiant Silvergun looking good! Snatcher next
So with Virtua Cop, I got some interaction, the trigger worked sporadically, but I had the above my CRT, pointing down at sharp angle before anything thing could happen.
I think it's the saturn adapter, but I've no other way to test it as I'm waiting on a saturn controller to arrive in the post.
I'll try pulling out abit.
SNATCHER works on my end.
First thing I've tested today, as the issue is quite strange and appeared on other SW emus years ago. I don't know the current status about it on those.
just captured too...all good
Nights may have a regression...stuck note in menu
like main menu on name and character select
I need to check later, thanks for the report.
I don't see anything wrong
can you show me what is wrong ?
yes give me like 20 min
capturing new Jag core next
AvP loads nicely...wonderful
I also didn't hear any stuck notes. compared both single and dual ram to the "stable" june core
AVP is old news. New high bar is if you get to see polygons in fight for life
next test
I see polygons haha
core's perfect. ship it
I can test on my single ram mister in a bit. but yeah, not hearing it on my dual ram mister pi
Maybe it's a bad dump?
Tomb Raider still broken with white lines in Laras face
same files as I always test on and havent had that yet
yes, no change for vdp1
was about to check VF2 with Sarah, but Nights got me side tracked
no change for Sarah
core for tr and vf2 - if needed
yea, not getting that Nights sound problem @naive whale
@mortal mist was is that for?
ill have to go back in and check
as someone wants to play Tomb Raider and VF2 without errors can use the above core
ah
3D controller is also supported through the LLAPI version of the core
What ist DS? Dual-RAM System?
Yes.
More specifically, Dual SDRAM, if I had to guess.
Sega DS 🙂
SEGA DS kind of happened.
Pico 🙂
Who's up to make a Pico core?
-# I am not suggesting, but
Also congrats on Radiant Silvergun thing
The issue would be how you’d implement the book 😅
I guess you could display an image at the bottom of the screen or something, but are there even scans of them?
I think that's less of a practical problem than like emulating laserdisc video
For a potential Pioneer LaserActive thing with SCD/TGCD boards
Is it bad that I don't know what LLAPI means!?
application programming interface
There we go
Is that just another way to do SNAC or something?
The idea of using any controller natively on any core is still very cool.
Tragically blister wasn’t made under the same open source spirit as the rest of the MiSTer project
Weren’t those random crashes fixed when the new memory controller was rewritten allowing old 2.5 modules to work reliably?
update_all.sh like always
Quartus Prime 🙂
Only good comes from this
no, there's still some random crash on a particular boss. not obvious how to consistently trigger it
Seems like this is another great build?
No idea if it was working on the previous build, but MKT is now loading on the latest one 🙂 Even the hacked vers.
Was there ever any doubt? srg320 is a wizard
and on Saint James Day
Big fan of the Sega Saturn was Saint James.
Anyone tried to play Die Hard Trilogy on the core? Tried, but just has glitched sound and no title screen. Do I possibly have a bad CHD file?
Did you make the CHD yourself or download it off a pack?
I don't even remember, it was kind of a while ago
I can always get it again, no worries there
Try with just bin/cue to see if you get the same issue
I would make your own CHDs if possible, the ones floating out there are super old
Isn’t die hard trilogy a rough game? Is that the one needs to be patched?
I can always just play the PS1 version too
if the Saturn one has problems, then I can deal with it
I haven’t tried it on the Saturn core so I don’t know. It’s fun with a light gun tho.
Who here loves the Saturn???
Sure you have to at least respect any god who eats their own infant son
Hmm not sure if that’s Saturn
The better question is...who here doesn't love the Saturn!?
Well, to be fair, I never played alot of it in my childhood and got lucky when I bought it cheap at a retro game store before they became expensive. Plus, now games are hard to find for it for cheap
I missed out on the Saturn hype train and was a PS1 guy
I got most of the popular and well-known Saturn games on the core right now
Lua, probably.
Can someone explain the difference between the latest test build (2024-12-11) and the latest unstable nightly build (2025-01-06)? Which version should I use?
always use the latest available , every new core released means code fixes
If you mean #test-builds message then that was a build for testing analog video output. Those changes have since been fixed up and merged. So use the latest unstable
I've seen some regressions on Dondonpachi.
Issue reported.
Could someone verify if Die Hard TRILOGY is working with the current unstable core too ?
Even when removing a cartridge option & setting the core region as US, the game cannot load on my systems.
#1046941029296779344 message
regressions ❤️
or something else ?
ok 🍻
For Die Hard, I will check more thoroughly, as I have another issue than the other user.
I can't even start the game, only a black screen, without any input response.
i will check it too
same for me , black screen
Not sure if this will be useful to you, but the new 240p patched version of Die Hard Arcade was working fine for me on this latest Dual RAM build.
we have problem with Die Hard Trilogy not Arcade
Only the die hards know about Trilogy!
If I use snac on the saturn will it effect both ports ( player 1 & player 2 ).
My snac adapter only has one connector.
I'm sit trying to set up my virtua gun and I read there's a calibrate gun option under options in virtual cop 2.
I tried first using a saturn controller attached to snac to get to that menu, then removed it and then connected the gun then gun.
I'm stuck at the same point, the start button on the gun works ok, but there's no reaction when I move the gun or press the trigger.
I'm now thinking can I plug the gun in first to snac and the just use usb controller to get through the menus?
or will the usb controller not work if I have snac enabled?
I'm going crazy here.
