Sure, but that's the scene that I would have expected to take it apart ~10 years ago.

hallow fossil
#

I don't have time to dig into this tonight or next few days, but anyone who is digging into Saturn stuff, would be good to see if this disc is out there in the regular places, and does it boot, and if so can you then go on to boot a Photo CD on the core

#

For anyone not familiar with the Photo CD format, there are some discs which are more advanced and are simple images based adventure games

warped saddle
#

the cd boots and the samples work

high bramble
#

I grabbed an image of the Photo CD OS (Europe) from <My... usual spot>, and the core loads it just fine.
I also grabbed a Photo CD image at random from the same place (Introduction to Photo CD, An - Version 2.0 (USA)).
However, when prompted to insert a Photo CD, the core resets when loading a different disc (as expected).

#

Don't know if the noreset.txt thing works with the Saturn core...

warped saddle
#

you can just put it in the same dir

#

but

#

I don't think it triggers lid close/open

#

because when I do put it in the same directory core has no idea the disc swapped

high bramble
#

Wonder how the real console handles that, since you need to remove the Photo CD OS disc to insert a Photo CD...

warped saddle
#

I assume the actual executable is resident in memory at that point

hallow fossil
#

Interesting, many thanks for checming. Good to know the actual CD boots. I wonder what it would take to get the core booting Photo CDs as well. Very likely srg320 isn't aware of this disc, it does seem an obscure one.

#

Also gang, worth firing up Christmas Nights Into Dreams over the next day. 🙂

safe trail
#

It seems that this would be a case of needing to set the open lid flag while switching the disc, and then closing the lid without rebooting

I kinda want to try the karaoke software, but does the core have microphone support?

ODEs handle this game by having the discs in order, so when pressing the ODE button, the device simulates a open lid, change game. close lid. The game happily accepts it. Not having a open/close lid is really weird indeed. I wonder if the open close is there somewhere on the core. The open close is handled by the disc drive, a trace goes from the disc assembly to the motherboard directly to the cd lid switch.

Anyone familiar with the link port? Does the midi in have its own opto isolator?

#

Part of me wants to just directly solder my midi female port to test but fears about wasting time since the midi in may need an optoisolator

limber laurel
#

@edgy hollow wrong channel? or I missed something about Saturn and MIDI 😅

#

the later, I wasn't aware at all that MIDI stuff was released for Saturn

edgy hollow
#

Saturn has midi support

#

Probably not on this core as it's not through controller port

#

It's used in at least 2 games like sega music school 1 and 2

limber laurel
#

edgy hollow

Kind of annoyed but knowing me, i would not use it

limber laurel

edgy hollow
#

Yeah, my attempt is to build a midi adapter to erase the need for it

#

Annoyingly, isoldered the female midi port directly and it didn't work

#

It probably needs the midi circuitry as expected

#

Which i don't want to do lol

#

I basically soldered 5v to 5v, midi - to pin 3(midi in), gnd to gnd

edgy hollow

anyway, looks like someone on Sega Extreme reverse engineered it

and it confirms my fear

that it needs the whole midi circuit

ripe valley
#

Yes, from Steve Kwok.

#

Not the most well known, but it tries to cover all the bases as possible.
It passes also the SCSP tests provided by celeriyacon during last summer here.

#

Some features are missing like key remapping and joypad support and second player.
That's a choice during the development.

#

In terms of compatibility and usuability, Mednafen is still the better choice.

I think a few of these last few things aren't terribly complex, but are niche and the core is pretty much out of space and stability could suffer

Yeah, looks like there is no cheats pack so that isn't in there

Maybe these last remaining things and S-TV support will be saved for MiSTer 2

I’d like lightgun support via USB but I could live without the other things, even analog triggers.

Yeah this is probably the missing features that most people would appreciate, except maybe cheats. It will take someone who has console and lightgun and skills to implement it though, as was mentioned the other day. I am not sure who falls into that category, but we can't really expect it from srg320 who likely won't have access to these things.

As it stands the core is going to be a fine replacement for 99% of people out there though.

How is the Saturn version of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3? Is it the best version on MiSTer?

#

Sounds like 32X version of MKII is best (especially with the hack, I'm sure), while Saturn version of UMK3 and Trilogy might be best

pearl harbor
#

I've always liked the N64 version of Trilogy the most simply due to the lack of loading times and a proper Shang Tsung. But between the PS1 and Saturn versions, I've always thought the PS1 version was better due to the lack of dithering, which doesn't look great in the Saturn version.

pearl harbor

Yeah, in anything that has transparency, like the shadows, Smoke's...uhh...smoke, some of the UI like life bar outlines, etc. It's not a ton, but what is there is very distracting compared to the PS1 version.

Not sure about UMK3, since I barely played that game compared to Trilogy.

#

But I would assume it is.

frail token
#

that sucks

#

There isn't a fast-CD load option in this core yet is there

pearl harbor
#

Actually just checked some UMK3 footage, and it seems that game just doesn't have as many transparencies in general. Smoke's smoke isn't transparent even in the arcade version. Same with the shadows. There is some in the life bars on Saturn, but it's not as bad as Trilogy.

frail token
#

I watched that video but I think it just wasn't high res enough for me to notice

#

I think the biggest thing between the CD versions is going to be dealing with load times, at least on the PSX core there's faster loading as an option

thorn pagoda

composite video does a good job of blending down those checkerboard transparencies

pearl harbor

You can really see it there.

And the life bars.

frail token

Oof

pearl harbor

Doesn't affect gameplay of course, but at the very least, if I play CD MK Trilogy, I always go with PS1.

pearl harbor
frail token
#

wow really

pearl harbor
#

Yeah, it's pretty insane in that game.

frail token
#

Saturn can't do transparency?1??

pearl harbor
#

There are examples, but it has issues with it. The patched ultimate version of Castlevania SotN on Saturn fixes some of it, but not all of it. Not sure how it works when some games get around the issue.

frail token
#

doesn't look like any kind of transparency fix hack is available

#

there is a hack that changes a few things

vernal sun
#

I believe the Saturn can do transparency but it wasn't as documented/easy to do so just wasn't ever used.

thorn pagoda
#

it can do it its just much much slower at it than PSX

#

even modern games take shortcuts on transparencies, they're hard

errant crown
ancient fractal
#

Saturn can do various true transparency effects as part of VDP2’s layer compositing pipeline, which is similar to what SNES can do.

The crucial thing missing is useful blending modes for VDP1 drawing. In essence you cannot draw a transformed sprite or any kind of polygon with blending over anything else also drawn by VDP1.

hearty marten
#

I mean, there are RAM carts but they’re built into the core itself iirc

#

From memory, the DE10 is very full though. It’s likely that some of the extra quality of life features may not be included if they take up significant extra resources on the FPGA

#

(That’s just me speculating though)

quaint sky
#

If the developer of the Core allows users to load custom RAM carts, I wonder if it would be a solution for Cheats? It could "ACT" in the same way as the real Saturn?

hearty marten
#

I’m not sure how a custom RAM cart would really work - presumably something would need to be loaded from the SD into the FPGA to initialize the RAM? Maybe you could add something to GitHub? 🙂

#

Any extra chips wouldn’t be supported though

Is the action replay really a RAM cart, or an additional chip that runs stuff?

hearty marten
#

It feels to me like it’s a bunch of extra chips - a bit like how NES mappers aren’t actually included in rom files and need to be included in the core itself

#

But I might be wrong

#

But I guess all the RAM and backup cart stuff is already there, so maybe adding the extra stuff for action replay isn’t impossible

warped saddle
#

that would just be cheat support

#

it's the same thing. you'd have to basically implement cheat support to support the 'action replay'. 'custom ram cart' buys you nothing and in fact would just be a weird layer of abstraction and probably more effort to implement

quaint sky
#

Or it would be if the developer of the Saturn core build/adds action replay into the RAM? But I think it won't be a elegant or best solution. Users have to enter cheats manually. And not via a text file like .cht

warped saddle
#

cheats would be implemented like all other cores that implement it

thorn pagoda
#

if space is really really tight you could possibly take a look at how the n64 cheats work?

#

they run on the arm iirc

warped saddle
#

that only works because the n64 RDRAM is in ddr3

#

so it is accessible from the arm side

#

I'm not sure where the saturn ram is. and I think all the cheat carts for saturn had access to the entire cpu address bus, so they could potentially sniff/change anything

I'm intrigued

untold cloud
#

I think the first place to look, is at how I'm decoding the address for Cart ROM read/write.

#

It got a bit more complex, due to how ST-V carts are mapped, which means the single-file binary can go beyond 32MB.

#

And the ABUS on Saturn is kinda set up as two 32MB chunks.

#

With two separate Chip Select lines.

#

In theory, it might be OK with how I have it atm, using one of the Chip Selects as the upper address bit.

#

But I'm not 100% sure if the timings are always correct.

#

If they are, then it's probably reading the Cart ROM data OK, but there are a few other bits of logic missing, to make it work properly with all games.

#

A handful of ST-V games also use custom decryption ICs. Apparently one of them is the same chip used in many NAOMI carts.

#

So the logic for that would need to be written, to get those few games running.

#

Thing is, most of the decent games on ST-V had Saturn ports already, so I don't know how much value there is there. lol

#

(I don't think I can just directly use the address from the CPU to read carts above 32MB, but maybe?)

#

The start of the ABUS is mapped at that address, on both Saturn and ST-V. It's almost the same hardware, with a few tweaks.

#

But that means you can't just include that bit 25 in the address.

#

Since it's always set High. lol

#

It took me a long time to even realize the ramifications of that.

#

IIRC, the ABUS address comes from the SCU chip.

#

I guess this is partly Saturn-related, but I might as well continue this stuff on the Dreamcast server.

#

Alongside that, I had to add the 93C46 EEPROM core from Jotego, as most ST-V games (and the BIOS) use that to store the settings.

#

Like the type of cabinet (number of players), Multi-Cart and Standalone modes, Credits per coin, etc.

#

I don't think the Backup SRAM is being saved atm either. That would need to work per-game, like it is on Saturn.

#

Or maybe it is being saved, because it's mapped at the same address as on the Saturn? Dunno.

#

All of those kinds of questions. lol

#

It also could really do with MRA support. Maybe even a separate core for ST-V, as the Saturn core is using 95% of the FPGA already.

#

(and ST-V doesn't need the CD stuff enabled, which saved about 10% logic. I have no idea which ST-V games used the SCSI CD drive thing, tbh.)

#

When a game does boot, though, it's usually very stable.

correct, limited by io to one port only for all the sega consoles.

visual grove
inner token

which console? saturn?

visual grove
#

Or Genesis

inner token
#

Saturn had it's own 6 port one, it uses the protocol similar to the mouse, 3d pad, and sticks. Saturn also supported the GEN/MD multitap but the protocol is a little different. Those had 4 ports and there was a couple different models. One had a single db9 plug and the other had 2 db9 plugs to be plugged into genesis. There was also Jcarts for genesis that put 2 extra ports on the cartridge itself to make 4 ports available.

burnt matrix
#

Nintendoes what Genecan’t?!😳

visual grove

I had support for both saturn and gen multitaps in the old saturn snac builds which is why I know about them, but it was hacky and I removed them to save space. One build I think I did a multitap option for usb controllers also

is there any chance lightguns use less pins than full controllers in some way that could enable using two of them?

green swift
hallow fossil
#

Do you know if Saturn Keyboard works via SNAC, Blue?

inner token
#

Well stunner technically only uses 3 wires for start, trigger, sensor but more wires than that are connected internally. I'm guessing those are used for detection. Stunner uses sh2-direct control mode but before that detection is done in smpc control mode. I'm going to guess if you tried to only connect the 3 wires detection fail and gun wouldn't work. Maybe you could force the detection to be a couple stunners and then only use the 3 wires it may work. So maybe not impossible but pretty hacky.

inner token
green swift
inner token
#

thanks don't think I've seen that board before, does it look like most of the wires are going to the chip? Don't worry about it if you already put it back together

visual grove
#

Oops wrong one

#

Meant to paste this one

#

Only 3 like you said

green swift
#

Hmm interesting. So it has potential?

inner token
#

The other wires might be just tied or pulled high or low. You might be able to fool detection if you recreated that. So you'd have to make an adapter that does this that has two ports and only works in this situation. Then fork the core to change the snac pinout and other code to use the io as 2 ports.

visual grove

So we need Saturn, Saturn_STV, Saturn_2G. There I did the hard part
