#Sega Saturn

couldn't you play that akimbo style with two lightguns?
Any particular video settings/filters to use for saturn? I'm using an older 720p lcd hdtv, so its looking pretty ruff
@dusk orchid In the .ini, use the scaler and output at 720p. In the core use the original aspect ratio so it's not stretched and use a video filter preset to even out the pixels. Interpolation Only is the cleanest, and there are several CRT presets if you like that look
Low resolution textures on polygons tend to benefit from CRT style pixels
Yeah, playing policenauts and it looks kinda blurry/splotchy. Will check the .ini, a lot of the CRT presets look really dark and like you just stamped a pattern on the screen.
Need to get that 4k oled i've been dreaming of first!!
Played this game recently and tested both the saturn an the psx version. The psx version definitely has an edge over saturn in terms of image quality, but the saturn version is not censored and has higher framerate in animated cutscenes than the psx.
So the Saturn version is till preferable if you ask me.
Damn, I so want one, but I don't need one. Over the years I rarely used my old Framemeister.
I do have a great 20" PVM, and a great Toshiba nanao ms9 in my egret 2, and two consumer crts.
So my options are great. But it would be so cool to see those color pop on my LG CX with a tink4k.
Thanks! That makes me feel a little bit better. I played the PlayStation 1 last year and was waiting a little bit before replaying it so it felt more fresh. Excited to see what this version is all about š
I have a PVM, but I havenāt used it in a while because it takes like half an hour to āwarm upā now. The 4K isnāt a full-blown replacement, and you do need to get a fancy OLED TV to take full advantage of it, but it really does scratch that itch. I honestly dunno what Iām gonna do with my PVM, since CRT repair is expensive and there probably arenāt many options in my area. Mailing it is out of the question, since that would add over $200 to the cost in shipping charges.
Yeah, the possibilities of repairing CRT'S is getting more scarse by the day.
As far as I know, there are a few arcade enthusiasts that repair arcades in my town and a adjacent village. Even though I don't know any of them irl, I have communicated with two of them online a few times. So if anything happens to my PVM or arcade monitor, I hope one of them still lives nearby and can possibly help me.
However, my did spend 3 years studying how to repair-electronics as my main subject in high school/prep school. So I did spend alot of time repairing old crts. But it's been 21 years since I graduated, and since I have not practiced any since then, I have more or less lost all my knowledge, except for some soldering here and there that I have done over the years. If any one asked me "read" a circuit diagram, I can't anymore.
But in case of me repairing it myself is the only option, then I guess I have to brush up my skills again.
Version 0.7 of Princess Crown is out
I might wait for version 1.0
Or maybe just until the holiday and play whatever version's out then
Apparently those are fixed in 0.6 by reverting to the Japanese text for those scenes, and the fix improved in 0.7 by using shorter English phrases
I can understand the hassle to have to switch to Japanese version
Seems fair to wait for an update where you donāt have to
Read that you can finish the game atm with only having to switch one time
we've waited like 25 years or whatever whats a few more months
What's the cliff notes on the Princess Crown translation? Is the one being released now by the original team or the forked team or a different team?
There are technically three separate translations in the works.
The original that has been stuck in development hell for years that is being made from the ground up.
A forked translation from an older build using machine translation as a base.
And another one currently in development that is uncensored.
ooooo I dislike censorship. How far along is the uncensored one? Is that the one on 0.7 referenced above?
the original translation is going ahead smoothly, and will be well worth the wait.
personally, iād be utterly disgusted if someone managed to shoehorn an old, faulty copy of my 1st draft of a translation into the game without contacting me.
but thatās exactly what happened
and every normie in the vintage gaming scene, has seen, articles claiming the game is translated
the patch is buggy, error riddled and crashes
There's THREE now!?
SamIAm and I began our Princess Crown translation in the spring of 2012. By the year's end, we had a complete first draft of the script and a print routine displaying English characters in-game, but it was all very rudimentary, and the bulk of our work still lay ahead of us. In February 2013, I created a public GitHub with a snapshot of the proj...
letās be honest, thereās 1 patch, itās chinese knock off clone and the other uncensored one
the above video is the real deal from the actual hacker/translator duo
I'd only heard of 2 of them; the original one that went quiet for ages, and the recent fork of that one
iād die of shame before doing what that fraud did
people like this really exist. disgusting
āif you donāt post updates at a pace i like someone should just take your work and get all the gloryā
I'm keeping my head down and staying out of it until a finished translation materialises.
I will say one thing, though.
Much was made about the second translation's translator only having an N5 cert (the lowest level of the Japanese Language Profiency Test).
Do we know what the credentials the original translators have?
Nice.
I don't think I've seen any game develop a fan translation schism like this before.
Well I hope the original developers manage to finish their version. It does seem a bit rude against them, the way it played out. But, by licensing it under the GPL they gave explicit permission to do exactly what someone went and did. So I can see the other side too
were they literally silent for 10 years?
maybe itās due to the complete lack of social skills of the average gamer, but all he had to do to not be seen as trash, was reach out and ask āhey is this coolā
but he couldnāt even do that
if you disappear from the internet for 10 years people are going to assume you died - if thats what actually happened
i saw him (Samiam) about a year ago so no
Heās not wrong though. Theyāve been saying this for well over a decade. By the time (if!) they eventually release their translation Edmaster will have finished his, people will have played the game and moved on.
Itās kind of ironic that the first life signs in 10 years that came from the project was instantly after Edmaster released his first version.
I admittedly did assume the project was abandoned before eadmaster appeared.
This is how the latest build looks on my PVM. Both "Bob" and "Weave" jump like crazy.
A lot of people are not perfectionists when it comes to translated projects. They know itās a fan effort. They donāt expect professional work. Heck people accept machine translated games as long as itās playable and comprehensible
It's a know issue the interlacing is bugged at the moment. CRTs are most affected by the inaccuracies, but it's not noticeable on scaling devices like the Retrotink 4K or Morph 4K.
Yeah no, the translation was abandoned and the new guy gave the original dude credit, front and center.
If it werenāt for him, no one would be enjoying Princess Crown right now.
Not only that but the original translation was GPL 2.0, so new guy had every right to save an abandoned translation.
Also itās a translation, that takes effort and care, but itās not their game and itās not their script. Dude be real here, they donāt own that shit.
So seeing the original guy go into a pissing match over something that he abandoned over a decade ago and seeing your posts admonish someone whoās delivering for the fans is extremely disappointing.
it's fascinating seeing the mentality of some in the fan translation scene š
Again I reiterate, new guy did everything right, gave credit front and center to the original translator, and all thanks to him that people are enjoying a Princess Crown translation. Also unlike original translator heās continually releasing updates and delivering.
Quit white knighting some random nobody that abandoned his own work.
Start white knighting some random nobody that gives stuff!
lol true

Fine Iāll stop, you win!
Has any other game had multiple ongoing fan translation projects at the same time?
Iām ignorant here but Iāve only seen one released.
I've seen various games have successive fan translations over the years, but none where multiple people are translating the same game concurrently.
There arenāt that many cases like princess crown
A game thatās been in the top spot for most desired for many years.
Yeah, I agree. People were kept in the dark for so long, so itās a, āWhat did you expect to happenā situation. I mean, people thought the translation was dead until Eadmaster came out with his version.
lol goddamnit, bullshitting here made me late so I had to run my kids to the bus stop š¤£
I see. I thought interlacing was supposed to be fixed, since something was mentioned about the Bob setting in the log for the latest version. Thanks for the info! (I have an older version where interlacing works fine.)
The Bob/Weave setting is only for HDMI
OK, thanks for clarifying. I'm ignorant when it come to these things š
was. asking. first. so. hard.
itās such a small decent thing to do
and he didnāt do it
It would have been a polite courtesy, yes, but do the terms of the GPL necessitate it? Asking sincerely.
No, licenses like GPL state what you're allowed to do, so you don't need to ask.
people really bringing up what revision of the gpl something was made under when the have a hard drive of stolen rom
He didnāt have to itās GPL
lol I laughed, I enjoy efforts like this even if Iām at the butt of the joke
He abandoned it for 10 years, my dude
Itās not like he dropped it last week
why are you defending this dude who doesnāt even know you either? Isnāt that insane?
I get you disagree with me and thatās fine. But all I ask is to not shit on someone whoās delivering for the fans and doing it for free and out of his own passion.
sorry that the original translator got his feelings hurt that someone picked up his ball and took it over the finish line. But it doesnāt involve you and it doesnāt involve me.
Is this argument really about how it wasn't polite? That's it?
lol he blocked me
Well thatās his prerogative, if it makes him happier then more power to him.
yes, and the unbelievable amount of entitled smugness underneath it all
for me at least
Thatās my hangup
Who's Robby I have a lot of people blocked
Yeah, clearly. I think you're projecting pretty hard in this situation.
onto whom?
He canāt see my posts but the new translator had zero smugness. Just commented once on the situation and was very respectful about it.
Literally first thing on the GitHub is crediting the original translation:
My attempt to continue on the CyberWarriorX translation project.
P.N.: reportedly CyberWarriorX and SamIAm are still working privately on this project, and since this was forked many years ago it does not reflect the current status of their project. Btw since this was originally released with a GPL-2.0 license, i'd like to exercise my right to keep working on this and make improvements as long as a better translation patch is released.
Anyway, @lucid needle Analogue interlaced output has known problems at the moment. srg320 has said he doesn't know much about video signals and has asked for help on that from more experienced people: https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/Saturn_MiSTer/issues/288
Just making it clear to everyone, @wise brook is being unreasonable about this.
Don't blame the new translator for random people talking shit about the original translator. The only motivation I've seen is someone trying to pick up the work of someone else who hasn't made progress in ten years.
I can't see this cause he's blocked but the empty space just reeks of smugness
If this was an active patreon-supported project and somebody else came in and undercut that, you'd have a point. It's the exact opposite of that.
What seriously I canāt block?
Did anyone accuse Azum of smugness when he started a PS1 core after somebody else had been spinning their wheels for over a year?
I love blocking personally. I think itās healthy. If someone is bugging you or you donāt like them, block āem. You donāt get mad and you donāt engage. I think thatās good.
I was initially in the 'dang that's cold' position against the new translator when it first came up, but then very rapidly "it's been nine years? For a GPL project? Geez, well done dude, you go for it"
me too honestly lol, thatās my secret
The original guys get very snippy as soon as the tide turned
heās wearing gloves too holy shit š¤£
did he take someone elseās work without asking 1st.
thatās literally the only principle i have a hill to die on with this issue
I only block people who can't have reasonable discussions and instead are full of hate and attack
itās so odd that no one else sees it that way
The work was explicitly available for anyone to use
They will suck your life away
And he still got blocked!
(within the GPL2 limits, of course)
On Discord, I only block people who spam with irrelevant content, or who have visibly been hacked.
On social media, I'm far more trigger-happy. Even if someone's saying something I agree with at a fundamental level, if they're annoying about it, they get blocked. I've been on the internet too long to put up with such things.
Yeah Iām still learning that : (
If he had taken their latest work and announced he was building off it, you'd have a point. But he took an old copy, the last freely shared update, and started from there.
I do that in places I don't mod š
Unfortunately places I like and hang out in keep asking me to mod...
and sometimes you have to mod the mods, like me š¤£
So many times now I go to argue on the internet but then I realize the person I'm arguing with isn't there to have a discussion and I'd waste my time so I just delete the comment I was gonna send lol
You've got Discord-mod-itis. I'm sorry.
It happens
Is that so.. š¤
Sorry šš„ŗ
Iām not a fan of you having this power over me lol
Damn Robby took off his custom made erotic hentai kid gloves and went to town
im sorry!
Is that what was in the picture
Put those tentacle gloves back on right now
They were asking people for help when they shared that build publicly a decade ago. Now finally someone is helping.
š„ŗš§¤š¦
Me neither, I am not good with power
OH GOD
it feels weird
i hadnāt seen that.
that would change my opinion on the whole thing.
thinking he had their tacit blessing to do it is quite different from not caring to seek it out at all
Fan translations have always been a fun rodeo no matter who is involved. Been there, done that.
I love people referring to the new patch as āuncensoredā
Lmao
Like the original project was going to be heavily censored or something
That's another weird thing. Uncensored in what way?
Were one or more translators LARPing as professional localisation writers, were they making abstract changes to the source material, what happened there?
We should do hilariously bad dubs / subs like in anime and totally change the meaning of different scenes
No lol I think the new translator is getting assistance from someone whose Twitter profile says they āspecialize in uncensored translationsā
lmao larping
'Heartthrob Memorial' comes to mind.
Is that one bad?
No, it's just the name feels like an overcorrection. The game's original title is Tokimeki Memorial.
Thatās the tricky part with translation is how much do you localize
Very odd turn of phrase. Doesn't inspire confidence.
Heartthrob Memorial sounds terrible in English obviously haha
I'd have left the title unaltered, personally. No need to play pretend with a game that Konami, to this day, has zero desire to release globally.
The only thing I know about those games is that my friend had one for PlayStation and you could input your name and the ladies would pronounce it in-game. So I made it say ācokā when my friend wasnāt looking and laughed and laughed when he tried to play it,
So Bad Lip Reading for video games?
This is a great idea
Not that I know anything about Konami or translations but I have a feeling if it were ever released they would 100% leave the title untranslated since itās so well known at this point.
Exactly. Would be a lot of work though ha
I imagine the title would be left as is, or completely replaced, rather than awkwardly trying to meet it halfway.
They are doing a re-release for Switch in 2025, so maybe theyāre considering it
Maaaaaybe
I know we would all rather play on Saturn of course
I doubt it, personally. It wasn't too long ago that Tokimeki Memorial was the only game removed from the overseas version of the PC Engine Mini.
Oh shit I think my friendās copy was the Saturn one
(Salamander was added in its place)
Damn did your friend import a bunch of stuff?
Salamander rules at least I guess lol
Oh didnāt give context. No heās Japanese and his dadās job had him move to my town.
It was funny because he was so surprised that no one had a Saturn here and people liked the N64 lol
What other stuff did yāall play together? And yeah I never even saw a Saturn in person until I bought one from Japanese eBay lol
What about āThump-thump-thump Public High School?ā
If you intend to release your translation in 1998, sure.
I think it would be a funny t-shirt with that title and shiori lol
Theyād sell so quick
We played Virtua On, took turns on the twin sticks.
Have you actually read the license in the first place? Rather than considering it as a random legal file in a directory, written by somebody else - instead take it for what it is: a set of instructions (written by experts who can write it in a way that protects you/others legally) that tell people what theyāre able to do with the software. As an author, by including it in your repo, youāre essentially endorsing its contents.
If someone writes a file that says āyou can do X with thisā would you feel the need to email them to ask āhey, can I do X with your software?ā. No, you wouldnāt, because thatās dumb and a waste of your time and theirs. If the author didnāt want people to exercise their rights under a particular license, then they shouldnāt have included that license in the first place.
This isnāt a legal vs moral issue - the license says exactly what you can do on both grounds.
Youāre just a jerk, I always email Bill Gates before I install Word in case he changes his mind about my license
Not gonna argue with your first point. I am a jerk š
Yeah this horse is definitely well beaten though. Yes a message might have been nice. No they werenāt under even the slightest obligation to do so nor to obey any response that wasnāt āgo for itā. If the author(s) want a different reality they should build a Time Machine and tell their past selves
Video Games.
Asking for a friend: how do you block Robby on discord?
I played video games. It was all right
I tried every shmup on the link I posted to see which ones let you save the TATE state for those that have them
It was only two š¦
Many have a pretty fast option to get back into TATE mode with a few button presses but itās still annoying
I played Radiant Silvergun for the first time the other day. Fun game!
I love the look of Radiant Silvergun, but don't really like playing it because I'm rubbish at it.
I can't believe Robby got blocked for his translation patch take. It's an indictment of everyone that he wasn't already blocked for his US Saturn library take
I feel this very deeply
I suck at shmups. I want to love them but Iām just so terrible
Itās definitely a headspace shift
Very different from normal stgs with how many weapons you can use, the experience points, the chaining
I started with Star Parodier on the PCE to get started. That one is fun, although I still havenāt beat it
You should give the Batsugun port on Saturn a try!
Played around with interpolation only and a few different masks and got it looking a little better. Thanks for the words of encouragement! Need to upgrade my TV so I can have more scaling options, but I can work with this.
spotted a small potential regression in Panzer Dragoon.
character sprite flicker when the boss appears at the end of stage 2
currently comparing against some original hardware, and to see if it happens again
Robby dropping the truth bombs on Princess Crown fan translation.
happened again in stage 3, everything not background flickered as the boss section loaded
Definitely worth reporting
iād try to record footage but github has a microscopic file size limit
Is Dark Robby gone now? Is it a safe space again?
I want to say Powerslave is much better than DOOM on Saturn but Iām scared
Unreal is very good on Saturn
Unreal is very good
PowerSlave is the Saturn's best FPS.
I want an Unreal Tournament 99 remaster so bad
So I can feel powerful killing bots again
Is that like a hack or something?
Original homebrew: https://segaxtreme.net/resources/hellslave.58/
By the guy who ported Unreal
Agreed. No one is entitled to have access to you. This social media age has people thinking they should be allowed to shove themselves into your life.
blocking on discord is useless though
you still get that stupid <block message> thing and you get to see half a conversation
hey, who gave you a discount that's not fair to the rest of us
I for one blame @burnt matrix
If Discord fixed blocking I'd be so happy
I probably would block less people because it would be more definitive but I'd be happier when I did.
As it stands, I sometimes just use it to hide people who are particularly verbose so I can keep the chat from looking like a wall of text. š
there's no way to really fix it though. short of some disgusting 'AI' that tries to determine when people are responding to a blocked person and also hide it
I'll admit here, in this safe space, that I initially blocked folks who were posting monkey gifs because it was everywhere. I have seen the error of my ways though
Twitch just scrubs them from existence.
yeah, but you get the half-conversation problem still
If I've gone that far on Twitch they're someone who has absolutely nothing I want to hear or I think they're not to be trusted.
Youāre home now, son
manly flannel embrace, smells of motor oil
luckily monkey gifs have been (mostly ) contained to the basketsnake fun zone channel (the one where robby learns about rimming).
poor robby

Play the Saturn mode where you build up your weapon power. By the time youāve gotten your weapons more powered up, youāll be better at the game.
I checked and have the same result , flickering
oh how is that mode different? does it save powerups through playthroughs or something?
Exactly. When you lose all your guys itāll give you a save dialog with 3 different save files. Save it (and in the MiSTer save) and the next time you play, press down when it says game start, choose your game save.
Eventually your weapons will be more powered up depending on your choice of weapons that you use most often, which should be all of them of course š
Well shit, ok. Thanks for the tip š
just wanted to record a brief example of my dual ram setup and grandia on latest dual core
Grandia on the Sega Saturn dual ram Mister Core.
De10 Nano. Mister Adldons older digitalnio board. Direct video HDMI to vga adapter to RGB / Sony PVM
i feel like i might be seeing some weirdness in the graphics but i cant really tell
It's also about 3x longer tho

So I mean like choose your pois
Saturn mode will fall faster cuz of the perma upgrades but each run will take an entire session š
I'm just trying to git gud
They also removed Tengai Makyou 2 I think.
Oh, they did.
its a tough game, I went down the journey and I just kind of stopped because I didnt want to do the same route again and again
its learnable though, its harder at the beginning, you have to learn each section piece by piece, I just get bored executing the same strat over and over again so that doesnt work for me
thats how every treasure shmup works really
-
Saturn mode is an XP grind and also crazy long but is good for just getting a feel for the game.
-
As for Arcade Mode. Choose stage 2 instead of 4 at the split.
-
Chain red when in doubt.
-
Watch replay videos to learn the basic chains. Donāt worry about the harder ones.
-
Homing lock on uncovers big point bonuses.
-
The tracking laser is good for milking XP.
-
You donāt need to play obsessively for score to have enough firepower to finish the game.
-
Look up Electric Underground he has a good commented playthrough
I cleared the game last year on Arcade Stage 2 route. It was a fun time!
I think Radiant Silvergun gives you a little more freedom in execution than Ikaruga. There is only one part in stage 3 you have to execute perfectly for score (getting chased by the ship) because the chain combo bonus is huge and makes up like 30-40% of your total score/ XP
Oh and you donāt have to max out all (or any) of the weapons, really. But make sure to focus on the basic shot.
The others you can clear the game with at like lvl 11 or 12
It is a lot of little bits of freedom that are like things I wish you could play with but you are restricted by the chaining in most areas imo. Especially in the first few stages and even some of the bosses. At least in my experience.
Like I want to like it more than ikaruga. It plays way better. But they put all these restrictions on the way the game is played so you can't enjoy blowing stuff up with your weapon of choice
I do ultimately enjoy it more than ikaruga
But it's so restrictive and that is super frustrating
I looked up clear vids last year while learning the game myself and saw enough variation in playstyles to be like, āokay this is better than ikaruga because the entire stage isnāt a single chain, so I can skip the bits I call bullshit onā
I get not liking it though
Oh yeah that is true but there's some non negotiables
So for example the first couple stages if you don't chain, you are low on power to even be able to enjoy the game
If you dont have the right power for the chase boss it's literally it will go on for years
Decades.
So you can't skip the scoring, you must chain. Ikaruga you can completely skip the scoring except w couple small areas. and you only lose one extend.
XP wise youāll be okay if you focus on chaining red and donāt over level the B or C weapons.
Yaya but just chaining red is still a chore
You don't have to do that in ikaruga unless you want extends
You can just skip it all together, or only learn the ones you want
Thatās true
Since your power is not tied to the chain.
So it's more "free form" in that way
It's odd
So the other thing is, the sword
Sword routing extremely key for certain bosses imo
can decimate bosses but also kind of sucks for XP farming
Yeah
XP honestly ruins the game for me
It takes something elegant and adds nuance in a way that is only good for certain gamers
I understand why it's there. But I'm not that gamer there gonna do the same route over and over again.
Ah fair.
Hell even training mode sucked for me
I had to ask someone
Ok what power do you generally have at this section
I can't even train because how am I supposed to predict?
I mean thatās kind of what 1CCing shmups are, itās taking apart the puzzle and nailing the execution under pressure that gets me excited
Switch version has a good training mode. You can set your specific weapon level and practice each section
I can't fault RSG for others but I wish there was a mode with no XP so I could enjoy it too lest a boss chase turns into a endless nightmare
Again how am I supposed to know what to set it to
I have the switch version
I can't know until I play a run and then write it down
And then assume I did a similar chain
Like was it 6/7/7 was it 12/5/5
That shit makes a big difference
It's just a lot of problem solving , just let me dodge bullets and blow shit up š¤£
You watch runs, or record your numbers like you said, or you just kind of adjust it to what feels right.
I have like a page of notebook notes for rsg and then I realized this was more like school homework and not gaming and gave it up.
I'm not a spreadsheet gemer
I just turn the game on and hit play.
I don't do training modes unless I absolutely am stuck on something hard core and even then I usually don't execute the same strategy. I just do whatever comes to mind.
I'm glad the game is there for those who want to engage with that whole web
i abuse the shit out of training modes and stage select with shmups
Because doing stage 1 over and over is boring
I mean I literally cannot do stage 1 again
So I will never clear RSG
Because the solution is the same
There's nothing fun at all left
you do you. If itās not fun to you then itās not fun
Yeah I can't do the games that need me to rehearse the same thing over and over again unless it's a rhythm game š
My brain rejects the incredible boredom of repeating a route with nothing to do
Also why I won't clear difficult shmups unless I can freestyle
The fun for me is just doing what seems fun and stylish in that moment
Even if that means I get less score or fail it's still more fun than boneless repetition
I donāt think Iāve ever done training nor cared about chaining.
Should I? I may not have ever beaten the game š
Iām not sure if I have but, I always looked at it like an endurance race to see how far I could get.
Nah not unless youāre the type that wants to learn how to one credit a game. Otherwise just have fun play Saturn mode.
Gotcha. Iām into shooters but the 1cc thing surprisingly never appealed to me for whatever reason
itās a lot like speed-running but less granular
Iāve always preferred Radiant Silvergun over Ikaruga. I prefer the level design and weapons system.
I adore Ikarugaās aesthetic though
Fwiw I don't speedrun and I have 1CCd a lot of games
I think it's a bit of a misnomer there's a lot of shmups you can just clear by playing them a lot kind of like a rogue lite or something but with more consistency and just freestyle skill increase and awareness and generally play it like any other video game
Speedrunning really never appealed to me because I don't compete in video games, I'm no good at them really
The 1CC thing is a bug that I have been able to get people hooked on cuz it just feels really good to do and it feels like you completed the game. Otherwise shmup clears feel empty unless the game has some kind of credit limit or something like that.
I personally hate memorization and really don't route things unless it happens naturally and I don't use training modes or practice cuz that's homework and homework feels like work! Haha
But you can just use a nice on ramp and skill your way up there's just a bunch of games that you won't be able to clear without actually training and routing or it will just take forever. Or you'll need a LOT of raw skill lol
But there's also like hundreds that don't need that.
For anyone who DOES want to see what the hell I'm talking about - just reach out and I can share the beginner list and a couple other fun tools
Do you play the Radiant Silvergun EXTRA romhack, or just the regular version?
I've not tried the romhack and I don't really know which mode I've been playing in
I just mash the start button until the game begins
if you get a bunch of anime you are playing saturn mode
Oh, I think it's saturn mode then. But I never watch a cutscene I can skip
what does the extra romhack add?
This patch back-ports scoring modes and game systems from other versions of the game into the Saturn and ST-V versions of the game. Namely, this adds "Ikaruga Mode" from the Xbox 360 version, as well as the 2-button "overseas" mode exclusive to the ST-V version. In addition to these ported modes, there's a new Special scoring mode which combines the original scoring system and the Ikaruga scoring systems in a different manner.
Kind of wish it was possible for the SEGA Saturn core to also support the ST-V games too.
Hypothetically it should due to the identical architecture, but the FPGA is already tightly packed that I doubt it will happen.
That explains the console as a whole
Actually you're playing PC-FX.
Literally, like 90% of the library is just looking at animated videos. They actually thought FMVs were the future.
Maybe a dedicated ST-V can be created by stripping out Saturn-only functions like the CD-ROM
Probably ideal anyway so that it can stick to the MRA structure.
The core occupies almost all of the FPGA. If any extra HW is needed for ST-V then its doubtful if it would firteven stripping things out
Not a big loss. There is not much on the st-v library that isn't already on Saturn. Ports were basically arcade perfect.
PSX derived arcade boards would be a bigger win š
ST-V is just a Saturn with a cartridge slot. Is there any extra hardware? Thereās something for the sound in that Batman game I guess. Really the only reason to have ST-V is for arcade cabinets so you can coin up and the games start without any extra cruft, in the right orientation, etc.
I was rolling through all the Saturn shmup ports to see which save orientation because I donāt want to take my STV out of its box when thereās already a mister in the cabs š
So yeah would love to see it supported but not sure how hard it would be since the audio hardware for background music might be the diff? (No cd audio obv) If thatās true and it needs some missing chip pretty much boned for mister
If the games are on cart, doesnāt that kind of imply faster access than CD? Couldnāt that potentially be an issue, depending on how timing sensitive games are?
BUT THE SATURN
ALREADY HAS
A CARTRIDGE SLOT!!

Yeah theyād probably need to be loaded into memory so yet another memory complication. The games are probably pretty small though once you cut away all the cd audio & videos
Itās why STV games sound worse than their Saturn versions ;). Virtua Fighter Kids is a good example where Saturn is quite a bit better. They did all right considering
But yeah probably a next mister thing
Seems like it wouldnāt be that bad with just a little more breathing room anyway since they didnāt change the specs
I tried CubeCat and I prefer it to Bug
Cats won the internet tho
you win this round!

Oooh, X Men Arcade Saturn Homebrew updated to v0.4.0

robby why are you looking at bug's ass
Iām not, what do you mean?
Oh you know what I mean
You said what you said
You posted what you posted
What else could have Bug been packing
I didn't see no gun in the pic
A thing people say all the time
Is that someone is PACKIN
And they aren't talking about no gameplay
Am I alone in this š¤£
First Iāve heard of it
Yes but you live inside a saturn
They don't let you see the outside world
Only bugs ass
We say it here all the time. Just the other day I said āyo, Sega Rally is PACKINā ā
And then we had a riveting discussion about its great gameplay
yes quite
Ah yes, the protagonist of Bug!
Lmao
@gloomy hedge I was joking, sorry about that lol
you don't get to decide that
its all water under the ass, as they say
Donāt forget, Robby is from Texas, we donāt have bidets here, just left over rib bones from lasts nights bbq.

In the latest core, Space Jam just plays all the announcer lines in a row during the first basketball section. You can hear frustration on certain lines when they play back to back. That's basically how recording goes. "OK, give us 3 on the next line....ok, two more like one. OK, two more like two, but as if you just got back from a run."
bin/cue or chd?
chd
I thought it added TONS to the game, to be honest.
Far more interesting now.
Space Jam is one of the games that have CHD compatibility issues, so maybe try bin/que to see if that changes anything.
Take this cue to throw your chd in the bin
dude that one is amazing, that happened in the really old core too and always cracked me up
it was literally every single SFX one by one

Well, I already told my sponsor I didn't drink it, so....
If this existed I would put it out into space as the golden record for the aliens
With Radiant Silvergun does it actually explain chaining anywhere or do you just have to know? Was it in the instructions or something?
When I first tried playing the game I had no idea what to do
The chaining system is based on color. So for example if you shoot down red enemies, you must continue to shoot only the red enemies to continue the chain. If you shoot down a different colored enemy, the chain is dropped and you need to start from scratch again.
right, but they are asking if that was explained anywhere in tutorials/instruction manuals etc
Hi hello! I am one of you now!
Well there's that tutorial at the beginning of the game that I always skip
As far as manuals. Knock yourself out š„²
And now we go to my opinion
I think it was shit design not to put the current color and chain score on the screen of the UI
I also think the cycling of the powerup levels was kind of shit and confusing too. This is not good UI design to me.
Literally a square with a color of the current chain and an amount would have been plenty of chaining was gonna be that important.
The Chain Max display after a run or whenever should be a hint tho
Welcome!
dual or single ram my dude?
I believe I saw that was added to the Switch release (not sure tho)
What game is this? A shooter?
Bulk Slash
and things do indeed get shot
but calling it a shooter would give you a wrong impression of the gameplay
Definitely not a shooter but I've played it a bit. The controls were something to get used to, and I plan to go back one day.
I always change the default controls. I use the ones where the shoulders are strafe. Feels much more intuitive.
Bulk Slash is a fantastic game.
I've beaten it once with every navigator.
Same! I probably need to look up what all the controls actually are and just stick with it for a bit
š shows how little I've played it. I just tried to get used to the default controls (and didn't even know there were options). Strafe would likely suit me better.
does bulk slash support that dual-stick controller saturn has?
Oh wow, that's properly fun now with strafe on LnR š
sure looked like it in the control options
does the core support it? that'd be sweet mapped to dual analog probably
sorry dunno, not rocking snac yet and haven't tried with a dual analog trolla :/
The translation supports it but the original game did not
The levels on the side in a 16:9 display were added back in the 360 release days, but the chain color i don't think š¤ . I have the 360, Switch, and maybe even the PC version? Could certainly compare. I just think it was a silly decision to trade aesthetics for basic player information.
Yes the core supports it but I had a 360 HRAP Twin Stick via USB
Will be playing more of this! gotta collect all the navigators and see what happens when you reach Bonus Score Thresholds - awesome game... my favorite saturn game I think

00:00 Game Intr...
This is not on mister cuz I had bought a Saturn and wanted to play with this controller
And don't have a snac
But I've done it with my 360 twin stick on a very old version of the core
The one thing is that the twin stick controls have one tiny beef which is so annoying. But you get used to it.
Basically they split two controls among the sticks that could and should have been one stick, so it feels really weird but it's still fun
(not sure on SNAC compatibility)
Worth bothering with the sticks? (I have them I mean worth configuring it for them)
Looks like a fun game
Iād have to get that translation hack I probably only have the OG on my satiator which Iāve never played
Yeah twin sticks works great with the core through SNAC
Yeah 100%
Translation hack is so good
It goes further than a translation. They recorded a good and intentionally 90's English dub too
So funny
The southern voice actor makes me smile
It's easily the highest effort translation I've ever seen, there's companies that did translations that were sold that are trash compares to this.
thatās because it reminds you of Texas and everyone knows Texas is awesome
Thanks for the praise of the Bulk Slash patch, everyone. Iām glad it helps everyone enjoy the game more. I had to make it one of the first games I tried on my Mister Pi (the first was Daytona CE)
I also tried Bust-a-Move 3 and Christmas Nights (tis the season). Everything looked and sounded and ran great!
I always switch to Type C controls. Go to the gameās options menu and then Key Config, then press right a couple times.
Iām pretty sure it just came with single RAM. Iāll probably buy a second RAM at some point. Gotta get a Saturn SNAC, too.
You worked on it?
and Stellar assault
Yeah, I was one of the core team members. https://segaxtreme.net/resources/bulk-slash-english.105/
A full English localization of Bulk Slash, including dubs of all voices in-game and during ending cutscenes, as well as an implementation of the Twin Stick controller.
Amazing! Thank you so much!
he is Segataās strongest soldier
Nah thatās Malenko. Heās prolific with the translation patches š
If you like nonograms (Picross puzzles) please check out his latest patch for Logic Puzzle Rainbow Town https://segaxtreme.net/resources/logic-puzzle-rainbow-town.362/
A Sega Saturn fan localization by Malenko. A Nonogram/Hanjie game by Human, the makers of FirePro.
These are AKA picross games, but this one does something neat and uses layers to combine colors on
the later stages. The puzzles get VERY VERY...
is he a Juggalo
Wow, well done, and thank you!
You can have this one you coal rollers
Bulk slash is very fun. There's a lot to do and it's one of a kind. Play bulk slash.
Play Bulk Slash!
I donāt think so but thatās unconfirmed
God it would be so great.
@winter phoenix Also I didnāt know you got a Mister Pi. Bro I am here to help out with anything you need!!
Glad to see you on board.
Enjoy!
Just got to add to the chorus of thanks. People are blown away by that project whenever I share it.
are there any other fan translations out there that actually did voice acting? that blew me away
Single RAM, as per default on Mister Pi.
Waiting for mine, and also a QMTech one.
So I could test better in the following weeks.
Thanks! It just came in yesterday. My Windows 10 PC refused to see the SD card without formatting it ā the card came preformatted with all the MiSTer stuff on it so I wanted to leave it alone ā so I had to set up the Samba server to load games on there over the network -_-
I haven't written a story about the Saturn core in almost two months because I knew this Mister Pi was coming in and I wanted to use it for testing, but boy did it take a slow boat from China
We're chasing the (last ?) remaining bugs.
Some are obvious, others need very long investigations starting this week.
I will try to be more available for the project this weekend.
Rough time at work, end of the year crunch time.
What bugs are left, off the top of your head?
A bug on Slam and Jam with one of the VDP, with inverted nets.
Some signals incorrectly catched on Dead or Alive.
A regression on Panzer Dragoon with a flicker when bosses are approaching.
A render bug on Princess Crown on the fairy glow.
And that quick flicker bug on Radiant Silvergun if we load multiple games before without rebooting totally the core.
The SCSP is virtually identical now on the core, thanks to the help of celeriyacon and srg320 heavy coding skills.
The other chips need some more investigations.
There are issues with analogue interlaced video output
That too.
And several unsupported peripherals like keyboard
And it will be interesting to have the Backup Card support too (for at least Tamagotchi).
The modem, I think it will not be feasible, but maybe the keyboard, just maybe.
The MPEG card, I don't know, srg320 could or not surprise us, but the FPGA is full.
And the issue with Main not supporting analogue triggers
Thanks for the rundown
But most of the system works correctly now on Single and Dual RAM.
I will try to update the compatibility lists within the next months, when possible.
Some games could already be classified as 'Perfect'.
Could be cleared, without issues or any nitpicks.
Like Sega Rally
I just want to say that I knew @winter phoenix before he became a big shot translator!
He is my Sega Sensei

Fun fact: I replaced my Phoebe with a Fenrir just for Bulk Slash English translation.
Can the phoebe play it? Absolutely! But I was so inconvenienced by the format process that phoebe requires that I bought a Fenrir just for the ease of drag n drop Bulk Slash. š
(Thank goodness for MiSTer Saturn core lol)
you again! still with the shill!
You should play Nights!
brooo
what do you have to say about the 60fps pc patch vs the 30fps saturn version
nights into HALF FRAMERATE
If you like your games looking like a soap opera I guess that is fine- Saturn provides the true cinematic 24fps experience
Id say thats fuckin VIRTUA
two HOT takes in a row
Some people enjoy saturn, some people enjoy uranus. Nothing wrong about either.
No kinkshaming here
Odd question, does the V-Saturn BIOS run EU games at 60hz, is that something I change in the MiSTer settings or should I use a different bios?
I have a few EU games in my collection that didn't get a US release and according to what I've found they should run fine when forced to 60hz.
bios doesnāt set the hz
that was set by some physical jumpers (and a crystal oscillator) on the board
I wrote up a story about Malenko and his Logic Puzzle translation patch, which he updated earlier this week:
https://www.segasaturnshiro.com/2024/12/06/logic-puzzle-rainbow-town-english-patch-updated/
I almost did a vid on it but then I remembered puzzle games eat shit and die on my channel
It's a known fact gamers are scared of thinking.
A video on Tetris would slay though. Everyone loves Tetris.
SEGA Saturn actually has a good selection of puzzle games to choose from. The SEGA Retro wiki cites at least 60 puzzle games.
You can't go wrong with Puyo Puyo, Magical Drop, Puzzle Bobble, etc.
Just, uh... avoid Pappara Paoon. It's made by Ecole, the same company behind Death Crimson, so it's not surprisingly dog shit.
dude just put a boob up there and say " the puzzle game no one expected to land you in hentai jail "

Saucy thumbnails have increased my views a lot in the back half of this year

Excuse me, but I consider that part of my brain stem to be the most cultured one. Thank you very much.
You're welcome
SEGA Saturn already provides the sauce.
(There are several of these "sexy puzzle games" by the way)
well thats ez enough
views done
Graphic design is my passion.
Are they as spicy as vivid dolls on n64?
Oh yeah.
What are the spiciest titles? So I can avoid them the most?
SEGA Retro has a list of "eroge" titles.
It's okay Robby take your time.
It's rimjob related, don't traumatize yourself again
I still donāt know what that is and I refuse to learn lol. Itās sexual in nature and thatās where I nopeād out
Eroge is basically a Japanese term that means "erotic game".
a rimjob is what you did to doom eternal
look, it sounds like itās a tire rotation in my head, fixing tire rims etc
i could post gifs. so many gifs. yet i won't.
Yeah, although in the fall of 1996, Sega of Japan announced it wouldnāt allow games with nudity on the Saturn anymore (the ones with red ratings icons). So all of the ones like that were released prior to then. After that, the worst they got were yellow ratings labels ā no full nudity
Guessing they were getting too many complaints and decided to change the policies.
Not sure. I think they were trying to appeal to a broader fan base, though. They didnāt want to be known as just the console for pervs (and hardcore gamers generally). Earlier that year, Sega put out the white model of Saturn at a new lower price to appeal to more casual customers.
I just got done speedrunning 177 for PC-88
Time for Robby to dive into the wonderful world of Saturn adult content. For science!
It's always funny to me whenever an American is so stuck up about sexual or erotic content.
We should go back to talking about good games like Bug and Sega Rally
Weāre discussing loads of good games in #1312772542091497472

and me.
For some reason that link didnāt take me to https://discord.com/channels/647909397477195803/1055574003810578503
There are good games (plural) for the Jaguar?!
I guess you could be discussing PS1 games in there or something
Baroque still blows me away as a killer app for Saturn.
For Jag, I'd say Canon Fodder is absolutely excellent. Mutant Penguins is unique and kinda fun. AvP isn't as great as everyone says, but it's solid. Jag Doom is really good if you're deaf from TV transformers or provide your own soundtrack. NBA Jam is stellar on Jaguar for real real. Tempest 2K is great.
OK, I'm out.
Hey guys just getting a feel for the environment right now. Whats the status on lightgun support? i see Lu's video says beta core has support these days but is it worth bothering with yet or is it janky enough that i should hold off on it if i dont own a gun yet?
Only snac for now, works great if you own a stunner/Virtua gun and a CRT.
oh thats great news! i've got a saturn snac adapter on the way already and the CRT is the lynchpin to this whole setup so i'm good there. Sounds like its time to ask the wife for a Stunner/Virtua gun for christmas then lol
Just beat Saturn Bomberman on the core. What an incredible game a 10/10. Timeless and now my favorite Bomberman game
The game that turned me onto Bomberman
NICE!
Itās gotta be time for a release soon, surely! š„ŗ
Just waiting for the unstable Main MiSTer file to be compiled by the bot.
Has the Saturn core been unable to save until today then? Or is the backup cart only used for certain games? Whatās the use case for the backup cart here?
Google suggests it just gives more storage, and that the internal storage can have issues when the battery dies - neither of which I presumed would be an issue for the core?
Backup cart only was missing.
(Assuming srg320 does the same thing as Robert and initialises new memory for each game)
Sure, but does it enable anything new or is it just a completeness thing?
Some games use it for their save mechanism as the internal RAM isn't enough.
Thanks š
Or need an already initialized card with a save done on factory (Tamagotchi).
And back that time, backup the save on an external memory for most of them.
No problem at all for the core.
I can see how it made more sense back in the day/on real hardware. Just curious as to what the use case is here - which youāve explained. Thank you very much š
if anyone wants to test Main Mister with changes for Sega backup cartridge
rename to MiSTer
Thanks @mortal mist, I've updated the 32x core on the other side.
Works perfectly on Rayman, SEGA Rally, Panzer Dragoon Zwei.
Just really slow saving with the OSD (8-9 secs).
Taking bets on how long it takes before someone says it doesnt work and they havent swapped in the Mister file
The original save file is amended and extended from 65 536 bytes to 1Ā 114Ā 112 ones.
I need to know how to convert the original Tamagotchi one extracted from the Backup card sold with the game to a compatible file for the core.
Netlink support would be soo cool. Using Mister lan port to play over the internet.
A man can Dream.
If all the games are in separate folders, wouldnāt the internal RAM always be sufficient?
Or are there some games that only save to a backup cart?
What is this commit exactly?
to support save for Saturn on MiSTer Main
Saturn can save without a backup cart itās just a few games that use it
Err real Saturn
Oops sorry itās been covered
Only one game use just the Backup cart exclusively.
Shouldāve scrolled
I only knew a couple other Saturn owners back when it was new but nobody had a backup cart. I donāt think I even knew they ever existed until the aughts
So far, the support is working and no regression found.
I could use it for my tests beginning tomorrow.
Backup cart was one of the first things I bought (combined action replay/backup) cause a lot of RPGs used a ton of space and the internal memory was often full with just 1 or 2 games
I never played RPGs on Saturn and still havenāt played through one š
Thank you for being so open and brave to admit that you are a bad person. Reminds me of Robby, from what I've seen here.
Comparing me to Robby? Donāt say things you canāt take back. Too late now Iām depressed
Time to stress eat some bbq ribs. Oh god itās happening Texas has infected me
Ouch. Thatās really gonna hurt people who have auto save enabled
For the size you described, I donāt understand why itās so slow
Only if you have the Backup card option activated.
Oh, itās toggle-able. Awesome!
The SEGA Saturn Tamagotchi game is kinda neat, because you can get Tamagotchi pets based on different SEGA characters.
Including Sonic, Alex Kidd, Pengo, Opa-Opa, and Flicky.
The Nintendo 64 game also did something similar, where it's possible to get Tamagotchi pets based on Mario and Wario.
(Whispering) itās Sunday
SatUrNDAY
pins updated
I am curious if the saturn core will at some point supports rom carts, like the one for KoF95.
I thought it already did?
Wasn't that the reason for the load rom osd option?
Maybe its my mistake. Never was able to make itās work. Probably I am doing something wrong
lol a typo
It works if I remember well for some of my past tests, but I'm using the hacked ISOs for the two games using these ROM cards now.
#1046941029296779344 message - also need for now mister main with changes for saturn
yes , annoying
I use kof95.bin file + unpatched game , works ok
So, Ultraman and KoF 95 work.
Iām gonna miss the upside down nets
we will make the appropriate option in osd: flipped nets = on/off
For now, I bypassed the vsync=1 problem with DoA, etc., by setting refresh_min=60 in the ini file
I do not see any regressions in the last core. for my part, I have nothing to report.
The one true wayš¤£
Panzer Dragoon issue closed
Any major games that still have issues?
Just some slowdowns on Last Bronx and Fighting Vipers on Single RAM hat can't be bypassed even with the FAST timings option.
Thatās it? Awesome!
And some people are reporting a crash on the final stages of Dead or Alive, but I can't reproduce it so far.
Virtua Fighter 2 and Tomb Raider , gfx issue
I assume interlaced analog output is still an issue
Yes
We have a workaround with your backport.
That's not without a partial solution.
Apparently the interlacing issue might be related to a bug outputting the wrong refresh rate?
We really need a test homebrew for the VDP chips, because I wouldn't be surprised if there are edge cases that we don't know about.
Interesting! Iāll double check too. Iāve tested DoA multiple times and beat the arcade mode to completion with zero issues besides some random bouts slowdown during the stage intro.
Robby have asked about the major games, I've replied, the interlaced analog is more about the general system.
But yes, that's another issue remaining.
I will retest Time Gal & Ninja Hayate tomorrow.
We have the PSX version though that work correctly.
I need to retest Princess Crown too, for the glowing fairy render.
I have prepared a core with all the changes so far. Tomb Raider and Virtua Fighter 2 works correctly without errors. I also tested other games I own , they also work ok. The only downside is Battle Garegga where I undid the changes. If someone cares more about TR and VF2 than Battle Garegga they can use this core without worry.
It doesn't exist so far, to bad.
do both unstables require the custom main now? Or is that only if you want to test the backup cart?
You can use the core but the Card : BACKUP option will not work as intended.
I know, I'm just slightly annoyed that it doesn't.
Ladies and gentlemen, please tell me if there is a road rash hack with 3do music?
Iāve beaten it as well. No issues
please no monkey gifs in here, sorry
only segata sanshiro gifs but like no spamming it
very well
So everyone is aware, @ripe valley very kindly backported today's Saturn SH7604 changes into the 32X core - #1096614378968727652 message
Is there any benefit on the Saturn core to using the backup cartridge vs internal memory??? I understand the benefit in the physical hardware but wasnt sure about the core
Nothing of note that I can think of
Umm.. increased save file sizes. Might be a benefit if you work for Sandisk
As you have full one internal memory per game with the core, thereās little reason to use the backup cart. If memory serves (it was a good while I used mine) many games donāt allow you to use the backup cart directly, so you need to use the BIOS menu to copy to/from it (hence ābackupā)
PSX won the generation with memory cards
I remember going round to friendsā back in the day and taking my memory card so we could continue and share saves etc
Hooray for Saturnday!
single sdram version
Just saw that @mortal mist fixed the typo. Thanks! It was triggering my OCD
Does it still say "Insert Disk" rather than "Insert Disc" to load a CD?
yes s should be a C

Literally unplayable
It probably does make sense for more people since vf2 is such a Saturn staple
And there is a battle garegga arcade core
The Garegga Saturn port is my favorite though
Ok commit on the way š¤£
another vital fix
Hey, my boss, Reginald Disk, just asked me to check on his drive mechanism being implemented in the core... he's so proud of it.
Let me just read through the threeeaaaaaoooohmygodddd! He's gonna be heartbroken!
Finally played the Princess Crown translation and yeah man, they did an awesome job. The game has nice big sprites and is animated very well.
Did it make you feel like a princess?
No lol
Aww... it's a pass for me then.
Did you pick up the cat?
Nope
You are playing it wrong š
probably!
Did it crash often, or was it pretty playable?
Didnāt have a single issue
What's the link to the latest one again?
But Iām not familiar with the game so many there are issues?
I just remember the eadmaster guy saying to still save often
I'd like to try out the recommended one as well.
Thank you very much, kind sir.
Yea, maybe it does crash? Iām not as far as the first boss, I remember someone said it crashed for them there.
(didn't mean to assume your masculinity or demeanor) š
Ha-bro-ken
I added the option Black Transitions , it works the same as on PSX , when changing the resolution there are no ugly artifacts, the same when changing the game (or reset) - FOR TESTING PURPOSES ONLY!
please test
You can enable and disable this option in the menu
https://youtu.be/8iGA8CM8X98 This is going to be some nice DF-Retro series,
John briefly shows of Grandia in the intro, i'm really exited to see analysis of that game between the platforms, especially the framerate and timeframe output.
This has been one of the ambitious DF Retro projects we've ever undertaken. What if Digital Foundry - with all of the modern tools at its disposal - could have covered the mid-90s Sega Saturn vs Sony PlayStation cross-platform releases? We have a general idea of how the systems compared, but does the modern DF methodology make the case or bust t...
Only dual?

Everyone knows it made him feel like a fat baby! It's his favorite genre.

single build - FOR TESTING PURPOSES ONLY!
If you are fixing, same typo is on the Mega CD core. Is funny that has been there for years now.
do need the MiSTer Main unstable for the new Saturn update if I don't use backup ram?
nope
(I asked the same thing)
cool, thanks
Seems a patch for die hard arcade resolution switching problem (on HDMI) is out.
https://segaxtreme.net/resources/die-hard-arcade-dynamite-deka-240p-patch-language-fix.368/
Patch for Die Hard Arcade on Sega Saturn which makes the following changes :
Forces the game to always run in 240p resolution for better compatibility with modern displays and certain upscalers that lose sync when switching between 224p and...
So it is not really a core problem.
So is Astra Superstars natively 480i? Running direct video into my retrotink shows a 240p signal
I just watched VGE latest video and Astra superstars was featured with Bob deinterlacing so definitely 480i.
isn't the analog out still wrong/broken for interlaced signals in this core?
Ah gotcha for some reason I thought it had been fixed
Yeah thatās why I was wondering
I believe so. I havenāt seen baconās video, but maybe he just did all hdmi
I think I misheard something bacon said, I interpreted it to mean that interlaced over analog was working
But yeah he showed off bob vs weave over hdmi in the video
Keriotosse! for the Saturn is kinda neat. Like a low-rent power stone where the goal is to knock other players off the central platform. Lots of goofy level hazards and basic attacks.
That sounds rad
Interlaced signals have worked since like 3 cores ago
there's still something subtly wrong on analog out, nothing that can normally detect interlaced signals does with that output
Yeah the retrotink definitely does not see an interlaced signal
You can see the artifacting from some kind of deinterlacer
Yeah it's completely wrong I just added when it looked good on my CRT
You sure? I have played it with my RT4K, and it correctly detects it as 480i, and looks great with motion adaptive deinterlacing.
Same
directly through HDMI in Direct Video mode
Maybe the issues are only when not using HDMI DV1?
I had a hdmi switch that messed up the transition between 240p and 480i.
Maybe it's something like that?
I got one recommended and that one works great
Best to just plug in directly for testing.
Yeah, the one I have has none of the usual issues
Its only downside is no HDCP support
I only use pstv with hdcp, there is a solution you can put between it and the switch.

No problem with PSX core, but tested Dead or Alive 704x480i and output looks like 240p, it seems Motion Adaptive interlacing or bob deinterlacing isn“t working. Tested vga to vga and vga (+5v) to s...
Fixed Interlacing on Analog Out #258 #258 This didn't fix interlaced video output for me. Here's a video showing the information signal from a retrotink 5x. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=...
does not seem to work properly for everyone
Gotcha. So, it seems DV1 does it, but analog out has issues.
At least from what I've observed.
Really cool the core seems mostly complete.
Can't wait for more updates.
btw, the reason it 'works' with DV1 is because DV1 has a flag that says the source is interlaced. I suspect that if the detection is broken over analog it means the signal is slightly wrong. I guess not so wrong that DV1 doesn't result in some weird deinterlacing
something to do with half-width lines
I've left some savefiles for investigations and the creation of a possible converter later from emulators and real console to the MiSTer format to Euan Forrester.
I've included a savefile for Tamagotchi too, extracted from the original Backup Cart (under .BUP format) if we could recreate it under the core format (and add the complete Tamagtochi function this time).
I could work from home today and during some breaks I could continue my tests for the compatibility list.
so happy to see this feature, works well thank you!
@ripe valley radiant silvergun score flickering seems to be cleared up, will do a few full runs later in the week to check the rest of the game and see if the glitch still happens when restarting after completion of story. thanks for reporting the issues!
thanks for testing !
Oh interesting; I have a 5x
What is DV1?
Direct video
Iām doing direct video hdmi to vga into the laserbear converter for component
Iāll try it on the actual crt rq to compare
Astra has this weird jitter over direct video into the crt
Idk if itās clear but the font is messed up
pins updated
I feel like Iām still seeing artifacting but itās way less noticeable on the crt
During gameplay
change it from bob to weave
Direct video wouldn't affect it
No difference
oh ok, sorry about that
Everything I was playing looks great. I should try some 480i games at some point. Anyone got any recommendations to try/play?
Itās still a good check to see if the deinterlacer option is affecting the analog signal
Check out Astra Superstars lol
And tell us if you see artifacting
By the way I (I added the botched interlace) don't see any problem on Astra, this monitor is dependant on your monitor
How are you running it? Are you on a crt?
Analog IO to PAL SCART RGB CRT
Hmmm interesting
Ok well mine is direct video to component to an ntsc crt
Oh my god
lolol I was so confused
Right now the sync width isn't consistant
I made another build with consistant sync width but it didn't change anything for people
iphone autocorrect does not like when I try to use acronyms
thanks for attempting that!
Isn't the issue that the interlacing is outputting at the wrong refresh rate?
A flat 60hz sounds incorrect.
In the current build -
The sync signal is longer on one frame on the other, and its also not centered (Its impossible to center because the picture width is odd)
I'm trying another build where I'm shifting the last build by half pixel
Thanks!š»
I don't think this is it, but it looks good on my end and I'm pretty sure does exact half lines
Anyone who had problems in Analog/Direct video interlaced video can test
Will test now
yeah still quite jittery in menus and with text on the screen
let me test back in the rt5x
tink 5x detects it as interlaced, but it is very badly jittering. also if you cycle through one of the interlace options the 'pre-interlacing' bob scanline setting causes it to render a half height frame. so there may be something about field order
At this point I need a t5x of my own because all the builds I send look identical on my end hahaha
yeah I see 525i now which is great. doing Bob offset +4 or switching the field order without the offset seems to get rid of most of the artifacting
the menus are jittery on my crt even with real hardware interestingly
like Saturn into the crt via composite
but the gameplay on real hardware is completely clean, no jittering
what changes did you make for this build? or is there a diff/github compare?
I did another build in the meantime cause I think I was off by 1 pixel (Off by one errors my favorate)
This is the another
This is the only file I changed
Since the VDP2 generates the sync signal
Will test
oh
I bet part of the problem is the vsync end is still hsync aligned
both the start and end of the vsync have to be in 'half lines'
results are about the same
Is that not what's happening?
The vsync hstart wire should control the vsync end as well
oh hmm yeah. although I wonder if it is still a line late or something. I think this is at the point where I need to find my logic analyzer, lol
(and remember how to use it)
If it's 480i it might be switching the field to early
Compared to 448i
But I don't think that's the case
Hi, it's me with the finnicky Commdore 1084 crt monitor. I tried both rbfs to be sure. They still have the separated fields in interlaced screens, which makes interlaced analog output unwatchable on my set.
Yeah so it's not the half line thing needing to be exactly half
that's the half-line vsync, which is good
these are the other vsyncs
it's happening before hsync pulse, but only when the signal is interlaced
progressive signal
there's also some weird noise at the end of the hsync pulse, but I see that with the psx core too. I wonder if I'm getting qmtech'd here or something
This one a lot better on my Sony PVM, not perfect at the bottom but a lot better.
Only when hte signal is interlaced? Very very curious
Ah nevermind
@warped saddle If 320 x something than vsync and hsync will be close to eachother, if 352 x something than vsync comes first
This is something the core does on both progressive and interlaced
has someone verified that against actual hardware?
Is this something a dumbass like could check for you guys sometime
If you have a logic analyzer, yes
As a purveyor of a real Saturn
No I ban logic in my house
No logic only zuul
Zool: Majū Tsukai Densetsu is a pretty weird choice
Good luck sxientists
100k+ points for the joke intersection
do I seriously not have a saturn controller, wtf
You have a Saturn but no controller?
I shall hold my two Saturn controllers tightly with a smug look on my face.
lmao
and one of them has an ODE in it
lmaooo
wtf
I mean, at some point I had a controller, but....
fenrir or mode?
or satiator I guess
This one a lot worse on my Sony PVM, sorry.
also that build is less wonky with interlaced, but mroe jumpy. whatever was causing the 5x to do weird stuff like show a half frame with some settings no longer happens
and the ode is a fenrir
I know I probably have a controller, but where did it end up after 3 moves? who knows
Now I think again its because of the vsync starting wrong
But now its alligned sooooo
The only clue I got is an off by error again
motion adapt + inverted field order makes the doa title screen look really good, hmm
what about during gameplay?
Note that I did make a couple of inverted field order builds but they looked wrong on my end
just as good during actual gameplay
some old dreamcast cables had to have inverted field order on because they had a bad sync combiner iirc
If this matters I am using a Sync combiner
This has never come into play through, ever
yeah i have no idea if thats relevant at all its just the only other thing i've heard of needing that setting
The only thing that's ever been relevant for it is needing to set csync=0 in my ini
same for me on Astra
title looks good, gameplay is not distracting (I don't think it's perfect but it's way better)
Inb4 its my combiner making bad things look good lmao
inverted field order in this build definitely works on the upscaler
you've worked some kind of magic for sure though
is it possible to do a version with the field order swapped?
Yes
Zakk can you confirm the signal looks good in this build?
If yes I will do another
i think sync combiners always rebuild the sync signal don't they? it could be applying some conditioning
Kash money
Sync combiners are pretty simple
