Saturn core is bugged when it comes to loading save data

#

It randomly fails to load

#

I can't figure out how to get it load and I'm pretty sure I turned on auto save while trying to load it and lost my progress

lofty spire
#

i've noticed that when i turn autosave on in the saturn core, turn the mister off, turn it back on, and load a game with the saturn core again that autosave turns itself off

mortal mist
#

I have never lost any save

twilit forum
#

No matter how many times I click load backup ram and reset, it won't load

#

Can't play any game unless I leave the mister on the entire time I guess

mortal mist

Do you have the games in separate folders ?

Yes

mortal mist

What game has this problem?

hallow fossil
#

Are you guys doing coordinated testing when a new build drops against a sheet to check what issues are fixed like during N64 development, or are all bugs in GitHub at this point?

twilit forum
#

checked the saves with a hex editor and theres basically nothing in it

#

tried it with every game ive played on it like rockman 8, and tokimeki memorial

#

they all have the same problem

#

toki wouldnt even save it properly, it made boot.sav instead of the actual game title

mortal mist
#

Your bios is called boot.rom?

#

It should load automatically on startup

twilit forum

sometimes i had to reset to get a game to load

because it'd go to checking disk

i have boot.bin

Shoud be named boot.rom

Does grandia still flicker with the new core?

mortal mist

I don't know , never flicker for me

Depends on configuration, I can't reproduce the issue so far with my systems, but other users could on the previous build.

I'm on vacation and without my MiSTer configs at the moment, so I could not test today's revision.

considering that there's footage of Shenmue on Saturn out there, it wouldn't surprise me if they were planning a 3D Sonic on Saturn too

none of this is based off of research of course, just gut feelings lol

lofty spire
#

if you told me that the Saturn was the most powerful 5th gen console i'd believe it

burnt matrix

I think that’s the saddest thing about Sega going third party. They’re always going to deliver on great games, no doubt, but we lost a team of brilliant engineers that was buoyed by a company who was willing to take risks and plan ahead.

lofty spire
#

i've been watching a youtube channel reviewing every US released Sega Saturn game and there was a quote that sums up why Sega were so wild in the 90s and just kinda play it safe now. someone asked the director of Saturn Sega Rally "what don't we know about Sega in the 90s? What don't we appreciate?" and they responded "freedom, creative freedom". hard to be as wildly creative as Sega were in the 90s if you have to publish software on other people's systems

burnt matrix
#

Like what the fuck am I supposed to make of this?

#

two segments merged beautifully by me, not so much scanned well by this thing.

He’s chosen to die rather than respond to Robby. Good choice

usually. Robby's a known Awful Guy

And now that I've finally done my good deed for the day, I'm going to bed. Try to use that scan only for evil, @visual grove . And @burnt matrix maybe reflect on your 'orrible ways. ❤️

You are a nice guy for doing that.

lol

#

maybe hold off for now. I'm going to do it with the camera and see if I can get better results.

If you don't hear from me tomorrow, go ahead. (Y)

NiGHTS is 28 today! Just finished my Saturn run (going to do a PC run with mods later), and highly recommend everyone else here give a spin today. Easily my fave Saturn game of all time.

Indeed. I remember seeing it for the first time on a demo kiosk at my local Electonic's Boutique when it launched. Ridiculous to think that was nearly 28 years ago now.

Hey @burnt matrix @visual grove - I've got the new definitive version of that VF2 card coming up

tiny quartz
#

Well, maybe. I've got a better -colour- version but the clarity took a hit. Still working on it

burnt matrix
#

Nice!

tiny quartz
#

I've lost the fringing at the cost of clarity.

tiny quartz
#

OK, I've got it.

#

First scan, 2 segments, perfect clarity and colour. Rotation was off by only 0.05 degrees.

#

Doing cleanup now.

I've read comment in the mame issu for chdman with multi index track : https://github.com/mamedev/mame/issues/10308. Tracks index are stored in subchannel data. For games that have problem Does someone can test CHD file with the sbi file? If CD emulation read the TOC in the sbi perhaps it could work?

warped saddle
#

the sbi won't have that subchannel data

sacred goblet
warped saddle
#

indexes aren't in the TOC. I dunno, maybe it contains enough Q-sub to do it but it would still be kinda annoying

sacred goblet
#

Ah OK!
Where are stored indexes in the cd?

warped saddle
#

yeah, just what I thought. sbi doesn't contain every sector of Q subdata, just the ones where they are 'bad'

#

it's in the timing data the, 'Q-subchannel'

#

TOC contains track list and pointer to sector/MSF of 'index 01' for each track

#

mame is halfway there, up until maybe 1.5 months ago even their internal representation of a cdrom only tracked index 00 and index 01. it was recently changed to support multisession and up to 99 indexes, but changes haven't happened on chd side yet

#

no, not really

tawdry lion
#

Hmm I guess it was mainly Dreamcast-related fixes, a bug related to compression that would result in output file creation failure (file would not get made, with an error spit out), and adding Zstandard compression support

anyone noticed in the core connected in a CRT that the interlaced video modes doesn't show as they should be ?

That incomplete interlaced support is why I haven't touched any of the SEGA fighting games much.

It's just too distracting when the image is that distorted.

Anyone had any trouble with the Saturn core not booting? I’ve had different versions of it running fine since the first alpha was released. For some reason after I ran the latest update_all script it won’t work at all. Mister just stops outputting a signal and the 3 main lights just turn off. 😦

#

Happens with PlayStation core actually too now. Tried deleting my ini file but same issue

high bramble
#

In your \Games\Saturn\ folder, the BIOS file of your choice needs to be named boot.rom.

wet river
#

i already had it as that and no luck. Im currently doing a fresh install of everything on the sd card. I've had a few other strange errors aswell so we'll see how that goes.

cheers!

Hmm, I had a microSD card build that I made near the end of April 2024... that had mostly Saturn ROMs on it... and I ran update_all... and after rebooting... I don't even have the Saturn core. Running update_all again... and it seems to be downloading a lot of stuff. I thought one time through would get one fully updated?!?

I always sort of pay attention to what's happening on the screen during update_all generally speaking

That could clue you into any issues

I haven't been following Saturn much recently; what major features or games are missing at this point?

So I’m no expert in the slightest but this core is the best way to play Saturn for me. Better than emulators and original hardware.

Unfortunately, Sorg has no plans on extending the number of players past 6, so you'll need SNAC multitaps for those Saturn Bomberman parties.

At this point it may be worth raising feature requests for things the core is currently lacking with any helpful info for implementing. There may be some things not on srg320's radar, and good to have things logged. I was going to see if there was any decent documentation for the keyboard that could have support added.

there's one for lightguns and one for interlacing already i think?
