Following on from conversation the other day about ram expansion carts, here are a list of games here that use either a 1MB or 4MB cart.

My understanding is that on original hardware if a game needs 1MB cart then it needs that cart, and it won't work with a 4MB one (why modern cards have a switch).

Has anyone done any testing in the core to see if you do need to have 1MB games set to that to run, or they run with 4MB set?

https://racketboy.com/retro/sega-saturn-games-that-use-1mb4mb-ram

RetroGaming with Racketboy

For those of you that are interested, here are the Sega Saturn games that support my 1MB/4MB RAM carts. Most of these games require the RAM carts in order to play them. The ones that have (OPTIONAL) do not require the cart, but will have better performance with the cart 4MB RAM: Dungeons & Dragons …

thorn pagoda
#

i thought it was only a couple of games that glitch out if given 4mb instead of 1mb

#

i seem to vaguely recall metalslugs one of them

hallow fossil
#

That is very likely the case, I haven't dug into this stuff on Saturn for many years

topaz mica
#

I don't recall many games having an issue with 4MB cart left inserted

hallow fossil
#

I am not sure if a list of these problem games is out there

topaz mica
#

but its been a few years since I tested (my Saturn is boxed up)

thorn pagoda
#

Real Bout Fatal Fury - Everything seemed fine until I went to fight Blue Mary. Her dog in the fight intro was a jumbled mess. When I knocked Mary out of the stage boundary, she turned into a similar mess of pixels. Tons of Sokaku’s effects during fights are a mess. Overall it’s playable but there are some pretty distracting glitches.

Real Bout Fatal Fury Special - A few minor glitches that are on screen for less than a second during some screen transitions. Not really noticeable unless you’re looking for them.

Metal Slug - No graphical glitches that I noticed but it is very much slowed down. Metal Slug always had some slowdown, even on the MVS/AES versions but with the 4 MB cart it’s much worse. It’s a good port but if you’ve already paid for Metal Slug on the Saturn, get a real 1 MB cart to go with it.

Samurai Spirits 3 - Nothing seems off at all. The AI is absolutely brutal.

Samurai Spirits 4 - Pretty severe graphical glitches. Worse than Real Bout. I wouldn’t recommend trying to play this masterpiece without the 1 MB cart.```
topaz mica
#

Yea, I've never played any of those on Saturn outside Metal Slug. Must be why I don't remember any issues 🙃 Interesting to know about the slow down.

thorn pagoda
#

i do wonder if the core will have the same behaviors or not though

#

since possibly the important difference was in timings and not just size?

hallow fossil
#

That would be interesting for someone to do some deep dive testing on

topaz mica
#

yea

hallow fossil
#

If there are then maybe it makes sense to have an XML file that will set the ram based on the game, similar to how N64 core does. However it may not be an issue on the core, so needs investigation.

ripe valley
#

I've done that for several emulators years ago.
The list is internal for Medafen. Kronos and NOVA have an external list.

thorn pagoda
#

are there any games that require a memory card (as apposed to the internal memory)?

#

oh right ofc someones already worked this all out 🙂

ripe valley
#

The card have an internal save that is set in factory, but we can recreate it since 2021 and some RE.

hallow fossil
#

Does the core support saving for games that require memory card saving?

ripe valley
#

Not at the moment.

thorn pagoda
#

a database file like n64s might be good to add later if there's room

#

just for quality of life

ripe valley
#

Gimme a second.

hallow fossil
#

I am wondering what could all be set with a database file. BIOS could be nice, so have a range of boot.rom files in the BIOS DB and have the correct one selected by the file instead of relying on unibios or having to set up subfolder ones yourself

ripe valley
#

The database that was done for the software emulators.

#

Detection with the internal header.

hallow fossil
#

Interesting that Metal Slug is listed in 4MB instead of 1MB

ripe valley
#

SNK corrected some later games and they could work with either 1MB or 4MB.

#

Only some earlier releases from SNK have problems with the 4MB card.

#

So we decided to set it like that.

hallow fossil
#

Do you use any database files to set anything else?

ripe valley
#

Nope.

#

There is a second database for emulators that could do SEGA TITAN/STV, but not possible with the core.

hallow fossil
#

Do you just use unibios for everything?

ripe valley
#

From the about 500 releases that I've tested so far on the core, the sole troubles that I've encountered :

  • Some European games can't boot with the Hi-Saturn 1.01 region free version, but could work with the 1.03 one (WarCraft II and Lemmings 3D);
  • Die Hard Trilogy refuses to boot when using a region free BIOS, so I took the problem in reverse and patched the game header to accept all regions and revisions of a Saturn BIOS.
hallow fossil
#

So does everything work fine with 1.03?

ripe valley
#

I can't stand for sure as nobody have tested all games so far on the core.

#

But on my current tests, everything that I've thrown so far to the core boots with a Hi-Saturn 1.03 region free BIOS (except Die Hard Trilogy that I've patched).

hallow fossil
#

If we were to get one added to the BIOS DB then 1.03 seems to be the best option though?

ripe valley
#

Logically, but I won't take a decision and that will probably need to be discussed and tested thoroughly at a later time.

#

And you will have some people that want 'nostalgia' and only use a specific BIOS.

#

Some prefer the EU or USA sounds and animations on other more regular BIOS.

hallow fossil
#

It would be good to get one added with the core now in Main, nothing stopping people using a different one or having sub folder ones

ripe valley
#

Yeah.

hallow fossil
#

Seems to make sense to just get 1.03 added so it is dumped in root for anyone who hasn't added their own

ripe valley
#

Just a reminder that I've done my tests with a region free hacked version.
But the region ALL option on the core should work the same.

#

Lunch break is over, I gotta go.
I just hope that some of my replies could help you for some future decisions or some ideas for the future that could emerge.

ripe valley
#

I will redo some tests on Metal Slug later, just to be sure that we have the correct info.

There were rumors of a SEGA expansion cartridge in some shape or form during the years.. First I heard of it was for making a VF3 port possible. That may have actually been developed, but I’m unsure if it was ever confirmed in an interview..?

Much later similar rumors, or maybe more likely “made up retroactive mythology”, made the rounds of a similar expansion existing for Shenmue.

https://x.com/TZMWXdiyer/status/1800170935145898397

今天TPU给SAROO制作了一个CD音轨PQ通道的 Index测试版固件。
你的世嘉土星ODE支持这个功能吗?
如何测试?
运行Taito Chase H.Q. + S.C.I. (Japan),进入OPTION,选择MC,调节00-40。

正常的情况为:选择06,10,应该只有一秒的一句男声

如果是女声,或是超过1秒的其它声音则代表不支持Index

#

"Today TPU has made a test version of the Index firmware for the PQ channel of the CD audio track for SAROO.
Does your Sega Saturn ODE support this function?
How to test?
Run Taito Chase HQ + SCI (Japan), enter OPTION, select MC, and adjust 00-40.

Normal situation: Select 06, 10, there should be only one sentence of male voice for one second

If it is a female voice, or other sounds longer than 1 second, it means that Index is not supported."

SEGA policies were more loose when it came to sexual content, which is why the SEGA Saturn had several 18+ games on there.

This was before CERO even existed in Japan, so there was no universal limit on what you could put on a system. Different console manufacturers had different standards as a result.

I mainly wanted it for the capcom games as i played sf2 on my snes every way i could think of, all difficulties, all characters, time limit off and on, even starting as player 2! vf2 looked sweet too, so i think i got that and sega rally, and shortly followed by.......probably darkstalkers or sfa2. men cota as well. And then kof95. Also got need for speed, puzzle bobble. Guardian heroes, gun griffon, virtual on. Heck it was not fifa but even enjoyed sega world wide soccer! And even then i still played my snes and amiga, and also got into pc gaming so yeah enough to play but really REALLY enjoyed my saturn. I was aware of the jap stuff, but just not how to import :S So indeed sad i missed, all the snk stuff. the 1 and 4mb cartridge capcom games (also marvel super heroes was still fun, just a bit slow and a dolt of a cpu in single player...which was hard to believe after being slaughtered by magneto in xmen cota :S but again enough games to play. I hadn't played it yet but it's super obvious they were thinking of Sega Rally a little

hearty carbon
#

Okay, having played it, it needs some work. It feels rough and it super needs some music but I do appreciate what they're trying to do.

Do you know if the creator is ok with changing the silkscreen on this adapter or maybe there are restrictions?

I’ve got a feeling that srg320 will make this the next “official” release. Not sure why, just a feeling I have

#

My guess it that the next commits will push up the relevant source changes, as well as a new rbf

serene thunder
#

Radiant S. runs so naisu on my newer MiSTer

#

Forgot how genius it is the way Treasure lets you save weapon progress
And I like trying to use a single weapon and get as far as possible

#

Power it up

#

Plus the dogs collection in options

In this case it simply sais that the cd lit is still open.

Success. A different rom did it 🙂

so i know 2 regular controllers is out of the question for saturn snac, but is there any chance of 2 lightguns? do they use any less pins

green swift
#

That’s a very good question.

#

It’s a button, trigger and a light sensor. I feel like it would be 4 pins max? I would imagine it would have to be its own version of SNAC for dual Saturn light guns though.

#

I’m sure it’s been asked but is using a multi tap not possible like it is with PSX?

noble escarp
#

Saturn lightguns also needs a bunch of pins each

#

Not sure if they work via multitap, never tested.

tiny flare
#

so keen to use my Virtua Gun with the core, although yeah I've only got the one

edgy hollow
#

yeah, sucks that saturn used a lot of pins

#

wish they only had 3 pins like n64 lol

#

i do lowkey wish Taki's clone board added more pins

#

or another user port since his board has the 12v power difference. Might as well make improvements

quick sorrel
#

So the DE10 uses 5v but the clone uses 12v?

edgy hollow
#

Yeah

#

So a dc splitter is a no go

#

Very sega tower of power situation

edgy hollow
#

At least there's a price drop and new usb and vga would allegedly be less than $20 each

gusty quest
quick sorrel
#

So then should any USB hub work well with the clone board?

edgy hollow
#

It comes with a 12v brick

#

It's a weird choice if it's 5v-12v

#

So dumb users can ruin usb boards due to traditional split dc power input

quick sorrel
#

So when FalafellGB said its own 5v6amp to power the USB hub, what does that mean then?

edgy hollow
#

Although taki claims, there's a 5v output to the usb board and claims leave the jank to the de10

#

Probably awbacon's video is outdated

#

Probably a taki hater /s

#

But wouldn't be surprised if the 5v header is only for their boards

#

Now if it had 2 user ports to fix saturn's 2p issue, i might buy it

warped saddle
#

it's just a 5v header on the board. anyone can design a usb board to power off of it. I assume someone smart will come up with a design you can use on either the clone or a 'real' de10, although there's still the whole "don't accidentally plug in the included 12v PS into your 5v usb hub' thing

#

said smart designers would probably also be smart to try and integrate overvoltage protection into any dual-use board

wise brook
#

i’m wondering if it’ll even be compatible with an itx-style add on board

#

actually that should be completely fine, power only comes into those via the io-board

#

so the de10 or clone only gets its power thru the gpio pins

edgy hollow
#

Probably easy for some that just use ribbon cables

#

And extension cables

gusty quest
#

He will be selling IO and USB hub boards to go with the clone board anyway and he said these will cheap. He is using the new 9.2 IO design too

gusty quest
#

Just use USB or wireless

wise brook
#

who knows, in the future maybe priorities will change

gusty quest
#

But SNAC was not designed for standard controllers anyway

wise brook
#

what was it designed for?

gusty quest
#

non standard like Lightguns and the user port also used for MT32-pi and even IEC on the C64 core

warped saddle
#

secondary sdcard pins are now used for 24bit analog

wise brook
#

interesting, i wonder what bandwidth remains

gusty quest
#

There is other options like SNAC ENCC and LLapi but meh

thorn pagoda
#

i wonder if you could like, use a multitap, but then have the core basically convert the multitap inputs back into standard P1 P2 inputs

#

basically making every game multitap compatible without them having to know it

gloomy hedge
#

I like my boards dead and deep fried

edgy hollow
#

Wait then how does the ITX have mt32 and snac at the same time?

edgy hollow
thorn pagoda
#

it is now, it doesn't have to do that though

edgy hollow
#

would be cool if the core can multiplex

#

like 1 pin can control if data goes to controller 1 or 2

#

with regards to non-standard. Only lightguns are the only ones with no USB conversion?

naive whale
edgy hollow
#

Don't worry I pressed dislike to get you back for him lol

#

hope doing that he'll finally answer my question about the switch lite mod he's doing

#

I’m good friends with Segata Sanshiro and he told me the Saturn core is the best way to play Saturn. True story.

frail token
#

his name has Sega in it?

burnt matrix
#

Yes

noble escarp
wise brook
#

everybody’s name has Sega in it if you spell it wrong enough

#

random

#

i love the sega font

#

i wish there was a hiragana/katakana version

burnt matrix
#

It’s genuinely a good and unique logo

wise brook
burnt matrix
#

And it has meaning to it beyond the name too, Service Games

#

Good name brand

wise brook
#

the old one really has that 70’s energy

#

oh yeah the service part specifically referred to the military

#

they got their start with slot machines and the like at US army barracks in Japan

burnt matrix
#

It’s a bit of a tangent but that history makes the name more evocative and interesting to me

#

Also I like how Sega stuck with the type face

wise brook
#

their even older one is cool

#

the red one i associate with their electromechanical arcade machines

burnt matrix
#

Ohhh damn I didn’t know

#

I assumed it was always the modern one lol

#

Damn that 70’s one is 70’s as hell

wise brook
#

so the whole reason they pivoted to these games was the Army declaring a prohibition on its men straight up gambling their wages away

burnt matrix
#

Yeah lol

frail token
burnt matrix
#

Does the Saturn have a lot of Japanese drift games or did the PS1 have em too and I’m just ignoring them?

#

Highway 2000 is pretty cool, playing that now. Atlus is also made a few JP ones that are cool too.

gloomy hedge
wise brook
#

are you referring to the hiragana thing i mentioned?

wise brook
#

it’s cool

gloomy hedge
#

thats wild for sure

#

I meant this one haha

#

the "new" one

gloomy hedge
# wise brook

the one on the right here is too sick, definitely need that one somehow haha

wise brook
#

what i want is the entire japanese language in that font

#

it doesn’t exist as far as i can tell

hardy lodge
#

Aaaall the kanji in that font shocked

wise brook
#

well these are just the katakana

#

for “se” & “ga”

frail token
#

You could maybe make it kinda

#

With two layers in photoshop

hardy lodge
#

Yeah but you wished for the entire language

wise brook
#

10’000+ kanji

#

obsolete symbol

#

sorry very off-topic

hardy lodge
#

Never seen those before.

#

Btw, how is grandia by now on the core? Perfect?

wise brook
#

if you’re literally everyone here except me and two other people

#

you’ll know if you have the issue a few mins after starting the 1st cutscene and the flickering happening as soon as some quads are drawn on-screen

hardy lodge
#

Dang. Even with the new ram fix?

wise brook
#

yeah, for me and several other users, it began with the first unstable build after the most recent official release

#

so something changed at first unstable nightly that only affected certain MiSTer set ups

wise brook
#

time to sit down for the premiere btw

gloomy hedge
wise brook
gloomy hedge
