I find out there’s a new build from someone asking me to retest with latest. This community is on top of their shit and AWESOME!

It's Saturnday!! @naive whale
ooh fun
I actually wrote down better specs for Uranus so prepare to get super hyped!!
Make me a video!
Sunday
With extra polka!
It better be MISTer related !
tomorrow's is. Tonight's isnt
and I am slammed today. Writing a proposal to produce/direct some commercial spots and I want their money (not their work. Sounds boring)
Damn that is a pretty beefy one.
Good luck G! Get dat paper!
they seemed receptive. I wont get rich but its 2 months worth of pay for not the worst gig in the world
Depends on the product but let me know if they need a handsome Latin man to star in the ads
Here’s my headshot
Hmm, sh changes to save space, free up some resources on the 32x core?
haha its industrial related so probably just product and demo shots
lotta controlled environment shit...my least favorite. I dont like anything "scientific"
basically means "fuck your creative ideas kid"
Does it involve a hydraulic press and a lot of tools used for artistic expression?
Any new build testing today?
I'm gone eating outside today, and bam! New update.
I need to remote connect on my GH account and close some issues you reported as fixed.
I have never really played B. Rangers
Is it running close to 100% now? I know it's tough to sort out original performance issues vs. core issues with that game
I've already found some regressions on the VDP.
Noooo
I think the fix for Cotton 2 have some side-effects on games like X-Men vs. Street Fighter.
Regression fixed!
Die Hard Arcade (1 min wait) and Dead or Alive (slowdows) NOT fixed, so no need to test them at the moment.
Solid release otherwise.
Light guns still not supported yet I presume? Can’t retire my real Saturn yet.
what was wrong with it?
how so?
Correct, not supported yet.
A part of the second stage background from Cotton 2 was incorrectly rendered on the left part.
oh right, that problem
When fixing the problem, it seems that some flash effects on X-Men vs. Street Fighter are affected.
We have a strip on the left part of the screen, missing that flash effect, like when using a Hadouken from Ryu or Optic Glass from Cyclops.
Like a VDP plane misaligned.
Missing backgrounds in Radiant Silvergun are rendering properly on the new update.
Radiant Silvergun fixed
Closed the bug report on guthub 👍
Dayyuummm lol
Haven't had a chance to test yet since I've been busy dealing with the dang squirrels in my car!
Then don’t put them there!
this community has such a great feedback loop. Core drops, issues get closed, a new one gets opened. Beautiful.
OSS community feedback loops like this are usually 2+ weeks, that why it’s noteworthy to me
circle of life 😂
I can't argue with that logic. You have defeated me!
Yeah, this is why I keep drumming how important the community is for the cores as well. The MiSTer is great because the community is great.
it’s an incredibly complex project, and it probably has 1/100th the capitalization of the smallest game hardware team (if you multiply dev + community hours * hourly rate), but it still converges over time
Just expressing gratitude for this miracle of global OSS out loud 🙂
Booked. Invoice sent. Payday
I see the same issue in core 20240504
Works fine with 20240423
Sega Rally Netlink Edition had a regression for me on both bin/cue and CHD. It now freezes at the Sega licensing screen.
Can anyone else verify?
I'm on v3 SD RAM
I was going to fix the issue log, I see my error just before too.
I see some gfx issues in Grandia
This only occurs in the latest core
Vertical coloured lines, for now I only noticed it here (Opening scene in town)
Same here, confirmed
Japan version works fine
I am the community!
Damn same here!
Bummer
just checked both Grandia (japan) and with the fan translation, frame rate appears to have gone back up to where it was with the last update_all build, but texture flickers continue
I've seen the texture corruption too
Do you like my latest Saturn HW set
Gonna learn me the pianer
I wanted to see if the MIDI stuff could be hacked and controlled somehow, as this is an official JP title w/ adapter
Wow this update is really smooth. Not finding a lot that is wrong, aside from the obvious 480i problem.
Dang, I need my Sega Rally! This is why I always keep the last few builds of the unstable core installed!
Been testing some other games, and haven't encountered any other noticeable regressions at least.
All PAL exclusive games have been tested!
||There was only one untested game mwahaha||
What is the 480i problem?
I did an aggressive fitter build because it often fixes the popping sounds on the menu for me. It doesn't fix much else, but it does seem to make the audio a bit less unstable in the menus.
@serene thunder there is regression on Sega Rally?
Ah ok because i played Yesterday with standard version and no problem.
HNNNNNNGGGGG
GGGGGNNNNNH
SAAAAHTUUURRRNNNNNN 🤤
my friend is coming over today, the guy whose Saturn and whole Saturn collection I’ve been borrowing for 15 years lol
Can’t wait to show him the core!!!
Why were their ads so much better? Segata Sanshiro beating up kids versus our trippy Saturn hallucination ads
Because a Japanese man beating up children sounds like a headline you’d read on the news
Real “Florida man” vibes except it’s a gator
that happens, it’s really unfortunate
Unfortunate indeed .. we should set up a non-profit to help the alligator victims of Florida man
Give him back his Magic Knight Fat Baby Earth!
It is his you’re right lol
There is some regression on Outrun with the new test build. The smoke effects around the rear wheels look odd
Probably related to issues in Grandia and MK2
Vertical stripes
Added info about Outrun
hey, so i'm trying to order these saturn snac boards, but the site to download the gerber file from just completely hangs when i open the editor, and for some reason the jlcpcb link you posted wont let me add the thing to cart, it just says "Parameter Exception"
any help here would be appreciated
#1046941029296779344 message
thank you so much. <3
you’re welcome!
also uploaded it to github: https://github.com/kow/MiSTer-FPGA-Sega-Saturn-SNAC-Adapter
hooray
Anybody testing SNAX with the Twin Sticks?
Yeah they work great
Robby has two sticks?
Robby Two-Sticks over heeyuh
RTS
Off the top turnbuckle
Would love to check it out for myself still waiting on a SNAX cable restock
damn, was about to buy one
I have THREE, thank you very much. Twin Stick + Mission Stick.
wait is light gun support in?
yo yo
I have this
Are those bed sheets
No
I run a haberdashery
I had to look that one up
And also a hostel
Lol
(do u need any corneas)
Not yet. Hopefully soon!
lookin forward to trying out my virtua gun i bought 2+ years ago lol
you don't actually need SNAC for the twin stick, it is secretly just a regular pad rearranged, so you can happily just use them via a USB adaptor like daemonbite or reflex if you have one
if you run the download tool would that update the Saturn core?
to the last stable, sure
oh thats nice, im going to try it out tonigth
if you want the latest test build it’s here for you to manual across
thanks
is there anything special you need to do to run a saturn game i selected my disk but i just get a black screen and it doesnt load
games should be in bin/cue or chd format , each game should be in a separate folder
The bios should be placed under the name boot.rom in games/saturn/
so i cant dump my chd files all together in the games/saturn/ folder?
As I wrote above, the games should be in separate folders, you can of course do you want to 🙂
what do you mean boot.rom?
The bios must be named boot.rom
so if i have bug!.chd i need to rename that to boot.rom
and have it in its own folder
is that correct?
that needs to be in the same folder as the cmd folder
chd
does the downloader tool download the saturn rom
no
no worries thatnks for all that at least i know what to do 😄
That's why you have a black screen when you start games, the bios should appear when you start the core
thanks I got it working
nice! have fun 🙂
Another Saturn faithful has joined us! 🎉
Maybe now we can correct the history books and proclaim Saturn champion
God I learned for the first time the other day that Sega of America was in talks with Sony to partner on the Saturn and Sega of Japan said no
Sega would be king if that happened
The cult of Saturn!

Only Nintendo fans worship cubes of the gaming variety!
Hey guys, is there a special process that needs to be done to load a working rom cart in the Saturn core?
I'm sure I'm missing something, do I have to load a cartridge dump when trying to use it?
Core does not support rom carts
i thought it did?
it’s a placeholder for future ( 🤞 ) functions
oh
Core only supports additional memory
Oh ok that makes perfect sense, thanks for the explanation.
It's totally fine without it tho, I was just curious 👍
Earlier I was wondering why Grandia was slowing down so much at times on this core, but then after testing it out on my Saturn, I realized it's pretty much as bad on real hardware.
Damn I didn't remember this game was so choppy, rose tinted glasses I guess 😂
Yeah haha. It's why whenever someone comments about any core slowing down my immediate response is for them to check against real hardware. It's definitely not out of the realm of possibility for it to be a core issue, especially on a core that's still in active development, but a lot of people really do forget just how bad perf was on first gen 3D consoles.
Anyways, appreciate you doing due diligence and checking it first. 🍻
If anything I think it would be weirder if there wasn't any lag.
Until the core fleshes it out I got the OG hardware
Will be sick when there's support though
I have two Stunners ready to go as soon as the core is.
The day lightgun support is added, it will be a stunning development!
got this to play with while we wait for the core to be finished:
What's the saroo to grab these days
I have plenty of gun4ir modded stunners for when it comes too 😄
Wait, how do I get that case
I was looking at those, it seems the expansion slot is still there. Any idea if a satiator would fit?
Was trying to figure that out as well. Trying to compare to a regular motherboard. I think it probably could fit? The only issue is the wiring behind the cartridge slot
You’d definitely have to cut the case and relocate the power jack but maybe ?
How is gun4ir? Anymore accurate than guncon 3?
Also, hi all! 👋 quick question, can anyone with original hardware and Thunder Force V please tell me if it lags as much on OG hardware as it does on the latest Mister unstable? Specifically Stage 1 with the big purple snake close to the beginning of the level. I can never tell if longplays on YouTube are on emulator or are stabilized in post or something. Descriptions never say.
Yeah, it's arcade accurate, meaning you don't ever need to recalibrate wherever you are standing. Also has ultra low latency. But don't trust me, I'm the creator of that tech 🤣
You can find a lot of vids online talking about it luckily 😄
Woah xD I had no idea I was in the presence of a God
Can I get the link to your website? I had trouble finding what I was looking for Googling it myself (Google fucking sucks these days, it’s why I’m here)
Glad I’m not the only one to notice how terrible it has gotten.
haha thank, I don't deserve as much 😄
yeah I must admit I should redo a centralized website with all the info, the system evolved so much since I started that it's hard to keep all data in the same place
gun4ir >>>>>>>>>> guncon3 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> wiimote
hope it's allowed to post that here (please tell me if not), but the website for the parts and all is here:
https://www.gun4ir.com/
I can't link my discord server where all the fun happens for understandable reason, but you can find more info in the old original post here:
https://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,161189.0.html
GUN4IR - The Ultimate 4 Points Lightgun System
Much appreciated good sir 🙏
Excited to look into it more. Recently got a Guncon 1 for Time Crisis and it’s so much fun lol
Bruh I used to have no problem hardware/software modding/troubleshooting anything with Google’s help before. I told my roommate how outside of this discord it’s been actually impossible for me to troubleshoot anything on Mister. He said I must be just stupid or something. A week later Google told him Joe Pesci was in Godfather Part 1 and 2. That was a fun argument I got to have with him. By the end though he finally understood what I was talking about xD
yeah the guncons are legendary guns, always a good time using them!
Hmm, getting no cd music in any of my games. Bin/cue, cd sound is enabled :/
How often do you restock premodeed ? I have never been lucky enough to refresh and see any available.
not as often as I would like, the stock of japanese guncon in mint state is going low sadly. But I should restock a bunch next month if everything goes well
It's probably your RAM module. I had that problem before upgrading mine, so if you're using a 2.4/2.5 module, or a 4 chip module, you'll need a 2.9/3.0 module.
Oh shit JayBee is here
Was just shooting the GUN4 again Friday for another vid
Always a pleasure to see your lightgun vids mate 😄
Or any of your vids really.
Your vids for the N64 and Saturn cores were a life saver👌
I am trying to play the english patched 1.1.1 version of Grandia. It just freezes on disc 1 at the Sega logo screen. Any thoughts on what might be going on? I have tried the last two core test builds (dual RAM). I patched to be region free, but I am using the 1.01a US BIOS and the core is set to USA.
Tried various other BIOS versions and no fix found.
Not sure what fixed, but I re-patched and checked the separate tracks option. I also selected none in the core next to the cartridge option.
You might of had a bad dump. I can boot into the game with no issues pretty consistently.
Might also be a problem with the RAM. This core is sensitive to RAM timings, so if it's a consistent problem across multiple games, then it might be the RAM.
Good to know. Thanks!
I have a mistercade, it WAS working when I first got it. Iirc
I'm not sure what RAM module comes with the Mistercade, so I can't speak to that. All I know is I used to have a Multisystem, and I had the same problem there. But when I switched to a traditional stack with a more up to date RAM module, games with CD audio started to work fine for me.
It’s just the normal ram module on the de10, probably whatever version existed when he bought it
Thanks!
Sounds like he wanted to quickly fix the regressions.
Grandia and Outrun fixed
if the Grandia texture flickers aren’t gone with todays update i’ll get the work done to make the bug report
that’ll be in about 6 hours
Sega Rally Netlink Edition fixed, MK2 fixed, Tempest 2000 fixed
by gawd
Aggressive fitter compile.
That should eliminate the slowdown when opening the OSD menu during a game already running.
We doing Saturnday again!?
🤘
It's like n64 all over again
Interlaced content is still bugged over analog and direct video.
I'm running out of excuses to not play barouge, enemy zero and deep fear it seems.
Tbh I experience the same issue on the analog io out with direct video disabled
Where it seems to jump a lot and not be stable like 480i in other cores
I pretty much just avoid Saturn games that utilize 480i often
since core revision Saturn_unstable_20240417, grandia displays a reproducible flicker to many different textured surfaces. tested and confirmed on two different Single RAM MiSTer's, one with a ...
finally, it’s done, written out as clearly as possible.
i tested both copies of the game on both MiSTer to confirm everything
slightly f’d with the amount of time i lost recording footage with my capture card for none of it to be uploadible
NO REGRESSIONS FOUND IN BATTLE MONSTERS! We can all rest easy
Oh thank god (clutches pearls)
I think theres a regression on die hard arcade but not sure. Just a black screen a couple levels in.
Taco jumped on the grenade
I keeed, Battle Monsters is best fighting on Saturn
Basically a hack that includes the extra tracks from the Mega Drive and 3DS versions.
OMG I was hoping this would exist
Camino a Mi Amor is a surprisingly worthy addition
Does it crash at some point? Does it return to the bios menu?
VF2 (japan) now just returns to bios menu for me. Using Japan bios region free. Will try using a different bios later.
did you check the game from another source?
ok works fine for me
sdram 2.9/3.0 ?
Works ok , no issue here , Japan bios
Situation: You can only have 32 GB of Saturn games. What are your picks? Here is what I have so far:
Definitely sub out Netlink Edition for Sega Rally...it's more complete.
Personally I'd ensure Baroque was on there...roguelite fun. I might drop Super Puzzle Fighter 2 since it's on the CPS II core, but I'm sure the saturn version has some optimizations. I'd also add Tempest 2000
Night Striker (but only if you're into that sort of thing)
Oh, Astra Superstars.
Looks like you’re a shooter fan which is good, could also consider the dodonpachi port if you’d rather play that than the arcade
Shining the holy ark is alright, I’ve never finished it though
And die hard arcade would be in my list for sure
Good list there though
Is Savaki any good?
Afterburner and Space Harrier are missing. Those are must haves.
I deleted Tempest 2000. I just don't like Tempest games. Just me.
I would have to learn it to find out. I played it slightly. It seems like a fighting simulation type thing but I couldn't get much to happen. I may delete.
Totally fair.
Deep Fear? I see a couple survival horrors on there. That one is my favorite on Sat.
Great list!
I’ve played so few of the Japanese exclusive games should probably find out what people recommend for those
I had a nightmare time trying to cull that library down, the JP side has lots of good stuff
If I were that limited, I'd probably use lossy compression on my bin/cue files. But yeah, a ton of the shmups that you have listed. And is Bubble Memories on there? I think it got released as a Japan exclusive.
never heard of it
I have Bubble Symphony
did you mean that
oh it is a game
wtf
bubble memories
no idea why they want this horrible music in their game though
Weird question, but does anyone else that had a Saturn back in the day (or PSX) feel that the FMV in games is much worse in quality than they remember? Example would be Guardian Heroes. Just started Grandia and the FMV is pretty bad. Anyways, wasn’t there an add-on for Saturn that made FMV better? If so, would be cool to have that added someday …maybe on a bigger/more powerful FPGA.
PSX FMVs almost always looked better than Saturn
And yes there is a Movie Card, but it only increases the FMV quality in a few games designed to use it
Nah, it was always that bad. CRTs helped mask some of it, but even then FMV in games never looked great until the Dreamcast/PS2.
PSX has some pretty clean FMVs
always pissed me off as Saturn owner
TV lower resolution and running games over RF was the solution to low resolution videos. 🫠
I remember being wowed by the FMVs on the Sega CD back in the day. Only because it was so new at the time to see video in a game.
The moving slide shows to minimally animated PC Engine games were always more appealing than FMVs. 😎
Pixel art animation "videos" still look great to me. Something like Snatcher on the Sega CD looks better to me than Policenauts does on the PS1 for example.
They age better to me. Unless the game used minimal compression, like Dragon’s Lair, most FMVs were pretty rough, but we just didn’t know it back then
I believe PSX FMVs typically run at higher FPS than Saturn also
I have a couple Saturn movie cards and Lunar FMVs do look pretty sweet
mmm, crunchy block compression artifacts
Time Gal for sega cd is actually tremendous demake port where they redrew frames in sprites. Make sure to play jp version for better intro.
Wha? That’s a lot of money and effort for a worse result 😂
Oooh is Lunar better on Saturn? I played both the Sega CD and PSX versions back in the day. Actually completed both. One of my favorite JRPGs.
Where is barouge and enemy zero?
Lunar: The Silve Star Story Comparison - Playstation vs Sega Saturn vs Ps1/ Psx/ Playstation.
Looks like the Saturn is not using a movie card
PSX has faster loading times also
Yeah, the PS1 version of Lunar 1 and 2 are excellent. And if you don't like the Working Designs nonsense, there are patches to fix that.
Remove the stench of Vic Ireland
"Un-Worked Designs" is one of my favourite romhack genres
Vic is responsible for an entire genre of hack!
True QOL improvements
Didn't he make it so you need to pay in-game money to save in the Sega CD version of Lunar?
Or something to that affect.
No way in hell I could deal with playing a game like Baroque
also I don't want to play Enemy Zero
I just don't want to walk slowly through hallways and possibly be scared
I have a Grandia that is translated but I'm thinking I can't load all the RPGs at once
I think they did a really great job 😅

Sprite port is so clean
Is this the one with the famous gif?
2.9
this is a very strange case , the game should boot
I would try it on another sd card after a fresh install
think i’m gonna buy a cheap sdcard to make a fresh MiSTer setup, just to see if that clears my Grandia woes
I have problems with core stability when playing FMV in some games, if I leave the game on longer it will freeze at some point
Tried the Japan bios v1.01 and VF2 (japan) now does work for me. But some other games now don't. Is there a recommended bios version for the core? It seems some of my dumps work and some don't depending on bios. Some won't get past the bios load screen until a mister reboot. But some just won't load no matter what.
Do you use a different bios for usa games?
yes
Might need to do that then. I guess you have directories for each region?
So auto region is not fully working yet?
I use the boot.rom, boot1.rom, etc. method and it does recognize the different BIOS files.
I prefer to use the bios from each region separately
how does core determine which bios is good for which region? there are several regions
I had no idea it also works like this. So boot.rom is JP, boot1.rom usa, boot2.rom euro?
korea, europe, japan, usa. asia, brasil
also I have no idea how it is supposed to work for saturn
FMVs look like I remember on these systems but I play on CRTs
I checked this method and it does not work with Saturn. All games are booting from one region - boot.rom - > USA
all you're missing is some good homebrew, really.

The Saturn does have the worst/greatest fmv game of all time though
Minnesota Fats Pool Legend.
I'm not sure
ah well I guess so lol
One notable exception: Policenauts. Higher FPS on Saturn but lower resolution.
15fps vs 24fps
I'm leaving a save file for srg320 (or others) on the issue tracker for Grandia.
I can't reproduce at all the flickering issue so far, even inside the museum corridor and during the end of the introduction.
bin/cue?
tried bin cue of both patched and unpatched
pulled the bin cue from 2 seperate sources
did you verify them against Redump?
i’ll check that again in a minute
it’s wild that it happens only to me and only on the core’s released after the last main release
on 2 seperate MiSTer’s
#unstable-nightlies message
using this?
yep
but if i boot the last main core i can run around Palm without any flicker and a higher average frame rate to boot
what modified date is your MiSTer binary (MiSTer main)?
If you ever manually modified it to be one of the unstable versions, it will not automatically update with update_all to my understanding
it should be 05/05/2024 for the latest MiSTer main
like, i’ve even made a fresh mister install
on a different sdcard
and updated it
so that’s 3 MiSTer installations on 2 different de-10
using md5free to compare the cue i have to the cue on redump was a match
Is it possible to test it with the last unstable Main here (#unstable-nightlies message) and that core version (#1046941029296779344 message) ?
Just to be sure that we could eliminate some time-critical routing and to be with the last Main MiSTer file as possible.
I don't care if this does not support Twin Stick, Mouse, and Light Guns Yet but I couldn't disagree because of the core evolving overtime 😛
The core absolutely supports twin sticks, because spoiler alert, it’s just a normal digital pad rearranged 😉
Unfortunately, not very intuitive to map via USB though
as stated. I would try with the latest unstable main
#unstable-nightlies message
Confirmed it just now, Grandia EN 1.1 bin/cue converted to CHD doesn't get those problems on my MiSTer. - mister v240505, os v231108, Saturn unstable 24.05.20
You as well
i’ll try when back from work
aprox 5hours
i think latest stable has all these fixes rolled into it tho
Haunted mister
It's a MiSTery
Yeah 🙂
he only checked unstable, with the last stable it is the same
#1046941029296779344 message
tried from this link so from March, don't know why
anyway, mister main doesn't matter with this error
I'm agree.
this all reminds me of the case of the one psx game 🙂
Anyway, I insist to test with a more aggressive fitter build like I provided some days ago for people with the issue.
#1046941029296779344 message
That should help for finding if there is a critical-path routing somewhere and/or some silicium lottery involved here.
@wise brookplease try zet-sensei's core 🙂
on it
🤞
Do you remember the Clock Tower case? 😄
every other game worked correctly , every core, two sdrams passed the tests correctly
I am absolutely not saying that the situation is the same here
but with the saturn core now, I think anything is possible 😄
im not getting the texture issue either. wonder if it might be some weird thing like the mister not getting enough power or something since it was 2 different de10s tested
Could be speed issues with the support, silicon lottery, voodooism and such.
actually.. its looking good. real good
I checked on three MiSter from 2019, 2020 and 2022 with single sdram, each has a different power supply , I am unable to reproduce this error
2.9 sdram
Same with my two systems from 2019 and 2021.
two people reported the same problem
wonder if there is any connection between
power supply and where it came from, ram and who it came from etc
doubt it could be overheating right
If we need to troubleshoot further, we will probably need to investigate the full specs of their system.
im getting texture flicker indoors. Saturn_unstable_20240520_129e26.rbf / 2.9 ram (passes 10 min+) / grandia eng 1.1.1 / IO analogue pro test sample from porkchop / USB c power / MiSTer_unstable_20240520_073c0e
also in the saturn aggressive that was posted earlier
Thanks for the report.
do you find the last main release was fine too?
tbh i hadnt really played grandia much in the last few releases
so i cant say off hand without testing
was gonna fix the CEC issue with my MiSTer by lifting up the leg of the relevant chip
then i noticed the micro sdcard
i had to throw one of these away
probably not that seeing as i’ve already tested a fresh install with a sandisk branded one
Hi guys. I’ve been away for a couple of weeks. How far is the core so far? Almost 100 % done?
hey all just popping my head in for an update - any changes with the latest cores to the 2.6 ram situation on saturn core?
no changes
@mortal mist any specific issues you know of?
I'm no kuba, but I can resume a little bit.
-
Some display error on staff credits roll for Virtua Fighter 2;
-
Time Gal & Ninja Hayate stop after the third level;
-
Die Hard Arcade stops for about a minute on a black screen (and goes back to normal after) when taking the elevator;
-
Some sounds are incorrect on Bug, Panzer Dragoon Zwei and Sakura Taisen 2 (at least);
-
Slowdowns on Dead or Alive (should be partially fixed with some fitter option when compiling);
-
Some text-boxes incorrectly rendered randomly on Dino Island;
-
Multi disc games without a save file creation between disc change could not detect the next disc inserted;
-
Missing letter on "LOSE" message on Cube Battler;
-
Mortal Kombat II could crash with some fatalities displayed and a recent regression on the publisher screen;
-
Interlacing mode is incomplete.
-
Users with older RAM could have some corruptions on sound/music or even freezes.
-
Missing MPEG card implementation, light guns, mouse, keyboard, floppy disc operator and incomplete SNAC support.
The list seems long, but it's rather impressive so far, and even better than most software emulators in terms of compatibility and accuracy of the core (even against Mednafen).
I have nothing more to add 🙂 , the list of errors can always be viewed here https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/Saturn_MiSTer/issues
Has anyone checked the MK2? I don't think there have been any tests since February
I tried one time during April and I had a crash with Scorpion on the Pit Stage.
But I don't remember exactly the core version back then.
ok thanks 🙂
I need to recheck Cub Battler at a later time too, as I've seen the issue with the missing letter on the previous build.
And the issue isn't on the tracker, but on the compatibility list.
Also the partially implemented interlaced support that causes distortion across multiple games that support it.
@ripe valley that's indeed impressive. Last time i tried the core it had sound issues in many games. But these seams to have been fixed
Also I played through Die Hard back then and I didnt experience that bug. maybe something is triggering it
also interlacing
but thats a really good summary thanks
anyone have sound issues with radiant silvergun on saturn both stable and unstable? tried regular iso and CHD both with regular bios and the hitachi bios
latest unstable
sound cuts out completely early game. some times it works and some it doesnt. just wanna see if this issue is common
It's usually related to what kind of ram you're using. If it's not 2.9 or 3.0 ram, that's when those types of issues usually occur. I'm using 2.9 ram and don't have any audio issues in the game.
There were sound issues long ago but they've been resolved in the core, unless like Mario said, you have older ram. I play RS frequently and I think it plays well or near-perfect. It's been a long time since I played on real hardware though.
yeah i bought my mister ages ago. like 4+years by now so thats probably the case
anyone wanna link me a newer single ram? yeah ill prob just grab one
Yeah, if it's that old, then it's definitely not 2.9 or 3.0 ram. I bought mine around two years ago with the 2.9 ram.
if the ram you receive doesn’t immediately fix the problems, return and/or exchange it; there’s a little bit of a lottery on whether the ram will actually hit the speeds necessary
And RAM issues can be intermittent as well.
Ever? You lucky. I’ve had occasional crashes when updating the core but after a brief reset, it doesn’t do it a second time. It’s a MiSTery
I have always had good luck with dualsdram
Seems the way to go for core development testing and playing.
today I played on another Mister with the single
Yours or someone else’s?
mine 🙂
MultiMiSTer 👍
My 4th one will be powered by taki’s $99 de10 nano 🙏
same here 😄
That will be my 3rd! So pumped
My 2nd will be a Taki $99 and RAM.
Awww man! If they can mass produce the clone ! The scene is gonna fucking explode! Just boom! Straight into the stratosphere man!
why crash RSG when this can happen
I thought I just chime in to say I am also experiencing the exact same flickering in Grandia with english patch (v 1.1.1) as a CHD file using the HiSaturn v1.02 bios, the last couple of unstable core builds, which I did not experience before with previous builds. I tested with the latest unstable main, which did not fix it.
Latest stable saturn core build seems to work fine though.
3.0 RAM module (seems stable at 146 MHz). 5V, 4A, 20W power supply.
using
Mister v240520, OS v231108, Saturn unstable 240417, 240504 and 240520 all experience flickering.
reseting the core settings in the OSD had no impact for me.
I believe that srg320 will find the cause of these problems
4 people with the same problem cannot be a coincidence
done 🙂
Hey all, I was looking through the history but wanted to find up to date info on lightgun support. Anyone know if this will be working soon for Saturn?
I have a virtua cop light gun I’m eager to test out
50ms? That's quite a bit, no?
No timeline yet on lightgun support. Hopefully soon! 🤞
I wanna get my shooty shooty bang bang on!
I assume it will once it's implemented. Every other core with lightgun support works with Guncon 3s.
I have two Guncon 3s, and it's my go–to for lightgun games on my MiSTer since I use a newer TV.
Okay cool, good to know. You’re using on crt I assume?
No, I use an LG C3 OLED.
And what’s the deal with gun con 3? Does it require sensors based on what I’m seeing, or is it just like any other light gun?
It uses sensors since it was designed for HDTVs.
Ahhh great tv. I have those for my main tv and computer monitor. Love it
During the PS3 era.
Do you use one of the retrotink 4x scalers? It looks pretty nice?
I’ve thought about using my mister on my flat screen but just haven’t tried yet. I love the crt aesthetic
Nah, I don't have any scalers. Just the simple setup on my end. Though I do have VRR enabled so my TV runs cores with different refresh rates (like arcade cores that run at 55hz for example).
How jam-packed is this core now? Wondering if this is going to be like N64 where some things will just not be 100% until later hardware
You run them all at 69fps. Like god intended
I can only imagine what you got up to on those slopes
And also the actual mountains haha
Hey I just got one of these! Do you use any hdr settings with the mister?
Was trying to see if I could get hdr working well but not sure how I feel about it
Also I tried the black frame insertion and it made me nauseous immediately lol
I tried it awhile back, but didn't really like it. Just feels off having HDR on retro games.
As for black frame insertion, I love that it gets rid of the sample-and-hold persistence blur, but I hate the constant flicker which is distracting. I also just prefer to have VRR enabled, which isn't possible with black frame insertion. Sadly, the best way to reduce persistence blur on modern displays is to simply increase frame rates, which just isn't possible with retro games.
i came to prefer my pc crt over the consumer crts. i don't bother to apply filters anymore either
just want a clean image
will get an oled eventually. cant wait for that
direct video with 2x scandoubler should have been perfect for this but it’s a little bit hit and miss with some cores
might look into guncon 3.. ive always wanted to play them im house. when i was a kid the only one i had at home was duck hunt. i played a few at a friends house and they were super fun
psx saturn and n64 right lol
i added a thing to mister ini for those cores and the rest use doubler
could you share?
when i get home i will
i think if you search for it in the crt channel youll find it
i got it from someone else on here
i’d recommend go all out with a gun4ir or maybe wait on this as a budget option
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=aE9a-fsnMwU&pp=ygUOb3BlbiBsaWdodCBndW4%3D
Hey everyone, Sam here! It’s been a while, but I’m back with some thrilling news about a groundbreaking project I’ve been working on — OpenFIRE, an open-source light gun ecosystem that's set to redefine gaming!
OpenFIRE discord is now live!
https://discord.gg/gFQpq62d
About OpenFIRE:
OpenFIRE is a collaborative project born from the renowned S...
i was asking about it specifically for psx. that will help find it in search
is that easy to set up?
very
no need for a pi or whatever right
run the pc software to setup the gun, aprox 10 mins, 1 min to calibrate the mister and done
oh thats way easier
the guy has polished and refined the software, you do get what you pay for imo
every time i run the Sega Saturn core, Segata Sanshiro jumps out of my tv and punches me in the face
thats a feature, not a bug
enjoy
hah! was literally writing out the same thing
cycle accurate Segata Sanshiro
mister feels pretty much complete to me now. all the systems id wanted it to play it does. saturn runs so well now that i can make it through any game ive played and has n64 now too
all systems after those, i actually prefer soft emulation for the great enhancements they provide
if you want to play the systems on a nice CRT, then FPGA might still be a need, unless this recompile tech spreads out from N64 emulation
enhancements on psx/n64/saturn kinda look like gift wrap on a weirdly shaped used toilet brush
also i want sega arcade hardware at home without remortgaging the house
MODEL 3 or bust!
lol the recompile stuff made me have hope for conker
i bet someone at some point will just make it work
but more pc ports may be coming..
think pc is now the best way to do zelda oot/mm and sm64
perfect dark too
that with a vga monitor sounds kino
the Pi 5 plays Model 3
if PCs weren’t such a pain in the ass to get 240p out of I’d be quite a happy bunny
ok….
haven't heard of OpenFIRE before. can't wait to see what it's got going
saturnday over on #share-media
does saturn have multitap support (outside of snac) yet?
wanna play me some bomberman
I thought it did already.
the last time I tried it it required snac
hey all just checking in to see if the latest mister update has any changes to 3.6 sdram?
2.6 I mean - for the saturn core specifically
no changes for 2.4/2.5
you can read up on the updates themselves in the #unstable-nightlies channel
Have to ask, have you tried playing on yours yet? My 2.5 works fine
Not all may though
It's likely nothing can be done to address the ones that do not perform well, to be honest. Just an educated guess though
Even a 3.0 replacement does not 100% guarantee success with core saturn at this stage. I'm not surprised , people are asking about it.
I am not surprised that people are asking about it. Everyone would like to have a working and stable core
The same user has asked many times
while there's no harm in asking, I don't think they realize that this will likely not be fixed. It'd be best to just order new RAM
Or actually try to play the core first, if they haven't already
gUmBo tested 2.5 and wrote about his results here several times.
I was looking through the history and wasn't sure if the noted sound glitches were just from the core or from the RAM
Gotcha
yeah honestly I'd either wait for the core to fully mature, or go ahead and buy a 3.0 or 2.9 RAM with 2-chip design
There were several people here who changed sdram to 3.0 and still have problems.
Yes, Mister Addons
hmm ... strange. Sorry. I wasn't part of those conversations
I got my sdram from LegacyPixels and it works perfectly
not sure the seller may even be the issue. It seems to be random. Meaning it may be a supplier issue, perhaps inconsistencies with the memory.
hmmm
Random question: Anyone ever use a racing wheel with their saturn core yet?
If people have recommendations on a specific wheel to get, I'm all ears
I'd like one that works across cores
If your goal is wide compatibility, I recommend the Logitech G29
lots of stuff on and off MiSTer supports it
Cool, that was what i was reading as well
And there aren't any differences between using it on Saturn core and other cores?
how well does something like that work with FFB?
I know they can be pretty impressive with games that support it but I've never used one with a MiSTer or older consoles.
Ya I'm curious if ffb actually works. I've read a few posts that seem to say it does but I haven't read that it works definitively
They're cool wheels for sure
I've almost bought one dozens of times
I'm already a flight sim nerd though, I can't be falling down the racing sim hole.
Ya, I like the g29 but I do not like the $300 price tag
lol same, I have enough specialty controllers. I'm trying to keep the missus from getting concerned hahaha
It periodically goes on sale for $230, and occasionally goes even lower than that
you can also sometimes scoop them up on used sites - they're very much in that "I bought it, played it twice, and let it sit in the closet" category
Not really - there is no FFB support from any core on MiSTer, so instead you get the default centering spring effect
Does the PSX core not do FFB effects? Or the N64?
Those both had 'rumble' at the very least. Though, not the kind of nuanced FFB you'd buy a wheel for.
Lol a VERY good point
Mostly no. The PSX will make the Jogcon work via SNAC, but there's no way yet to pass the Jogcon FFB through Linux to an FFB wheel. The DualShock and N64 have simple rumble, not FFB, and there isn't currently any way to map rumble effects to a simple FFB wiggle effect
Do you mean in regard to the 2.5 ram working? That I can understand but it will kinda suck if a 2.9/3.0 ram lottery win is a requirement with the finished core, was hoping that as it matured that element would be more stable. I’m also very dumb when it comes to technical stuff so I apologize in advance if I sound kinda silly
I wonder if anyone with technical knowledge could explain more in depth why the issues occur/can’t be fixed. On my end at least both of my 3.0s seem to work well with the core, but it sucks for other folks that are still having issues
So let me get this straight: the g29 will work with rumble effects for games on psx and n64, but those systems won't utilize the ffb the wheel has?
It will have neither rumble nor FFB
Aw bummer. Would a ps1 era wheel have rumble?
Looks like a couple did, yeah https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/threads/whats-the-best-ps1-steering-wheel.131085/
Man, that's disappointing tho. It would be nice to have one wheel that works across all the systems
Is there any hope to add rumble to a wheel like the g29, or is that just not something that will ever happen?
It's possible that you could interpret rumble as a simple vibration FFB effect, but I haven't heard of any efforts to do it
Note that PS1 had a lot of different ways to play driving games, and they all have some compromises. Like, the NeGcon has no rumble or FFB, but it's the only option that gives you analog accel/brake. The DualShock has rumble, but it has deadzones and digital accel/brake.
Meanwhile, I don't think any Saturn controllers had rumble/FFB of any kind
Some PS1 era wheels had rumble. Either by emulating a negcon with rumble, or a dualshock.
As nolbin said, saturn had no rumble at all.
A real wheel mapped to saturn would be usefull by emulating the saturns wheel or the 3d pad (as it can use the analog triggers).
I've made an adapter to use logitech wheels on ogXbox and it supports rumble effects. It's on my roadmap to also make it work in xinput mode, so it could be used on mister and would pass the rumble effect (when used on psx maped as dualshock)
i guess mister could natively pass it rumble effects too
afaik some real psx racing wheels did that
Yes. Wheels that works in negcon (with rumble) or dualshock mode
But psxcore does not support negcon rumble 😦
are you sure? i have a feeling i found out it works in colin mccrea 2 at some point
was years ago now though
I'm sure. I was going to implement it... but I know nothing of fpga programing XD
it might be pretty straightforward to do you could ask rob
its not a whole dualshock really it's the simpler dual-analog w/rumble mode afaik
I did it on duckstation (ps1 emulator)
It's mostly a "dualshock" as it needs to know a lot of commands. Device must report it's possible modes, actuators, and so on.
And there's also the legacy rumble mode that uses only one actuator. This one is simple to implement.
ah
Btw usb wheel to real saturn adapter is in the works 🙂
does the negcon use a different rumble protocol than a normal dualshock?
There's just 2 type of rumble on psx (3 if you count the JOGCON). The legacy one and the modern "dualshock" one.
The original negcon does not support any rumble. But later on some wheels got released for ps1 that implemented negcon with support for rumble.
Dualshock rumble requires some command exchange to enable rumble.
Legacy rumble just requires sending some specific bits at the poll command.
Basically every ps1 device could have legacy rumble and it would not break compatibility wih software.
But dualshock style rumble is more complicate... Like namco games does not work if you present it with a negcon that supports dualshock style rumble.
We can move this to PSX channel.
I received the upgraded RAM for the Multisystem from Ultimatemister... Just to confirm the same as the others; Saturn core is now working.
Great 👍🏻
What are the top SDRAM-sensitive games these days?
Thanks! I’ll give these a good spin on my trusty v2.5 RAM 😄
That’s great, thanks, my fomo super meter is almost full
Hopefully the updated 2.9v ram for the MMS comes out soon!
It’s out, that’s what @Flashback’s post was about, you can get it from ultimatemister
Since the 2.9/3.0 RAM isn't a guarantee yet, I'm holding off upgrading my 2.5, which seems to run Saturn at least somewhat well, although with audio issues at times.
Given the rapid progress, I wouldn't be surprised if it all gets sorted out at the end.
(If not, I'll buy a new stick, though. I don't think I'd do dual-RAM, still want to keep my analog board in place.)
Maybe a bit more clear cut with the multisystem, since afaik all of them have the same problems with Saturn core, and this new ram board is sold specifically as a fix for that… so it should work. It is possible the issues will be resolved anyway though, but who knows if or when.
Join the modern RAM gang! Spend the money to be one of us!

||I'm kidding of course. ||
You sound like the voices in my head
Who says I'm not the voices in your head! 😈
The issues should be fixed by the time the core is done. Optimizations and refactoring happens at the end.
But having nonstandard ram could produce other unforeseen issues.
It is a lottery, but if you want to have the best chance right now upgrading seems the best choice. But apart from saturn my 2.5 seems to deal with every core i throw ar it AND a small chance the issues will persist means i will indeed wait. Helps that i have a fenrir modded Saturn and feel pc emulation is also quite decent for saturn already.
The issues are caused by SRGs new SDram controller he wrote for the core, he stated it was the only way to make the single SDram version possible. Its sensitive to latency and stability
he said how it works is a first for a MiSTer core
This is why I only use v4.0 ram
What is the game ? And which core version are you using ? You won't fix it, it's a bug in core most likely
The newest core and shining force scenario 1 English translation
Unstable from the discord
Also did the same thing with the update all core
Although you probably mean Save, I see an error in the graphics 😂
Since 2023-08-09 the Saturn core has the capability to save your game progress. In order to use the memory card you must first initialize it. Some games need an initialized memory card to start.
Start the core and wait for the load screen to come up
On this screen select 'Manage Memory'
Select 'Clear'
On the 'Okay to Clear' confirmation select 'Yes'
Go back to the main menu and you should be good to go - don't forget to set autosave to on on the MiSTer menu screen
Check pins
Vampier guide
Ok I did that earlier with the memory but I'll try it again
i think you use the open lid button to get back to the saturns bios then format the card there right
Yeah its still telling me the same thing not sure what I'm doing wrong
I'm loading the bios, going to memory, clear and confirm, then load game
I don't have any saves first time trying this core
you need to load the game then open the lid and bounce back to the bios to format it
every time the core loads a new game it also loads a fresh unique memory card
How do I open lid? I googled and checked the vampier guide I just don't see anything
somewhere in the osd i think
I'm not seeing it
I just tried Albert Odyssey and when it told me I didn't have ram to save it just auto booted me back to the bios and that worked for that game
Not sure whats going on with Shining Force III but I can't get back to bios after I load it.
ok now when I load shining force it works so I guess I just needed to initialize with one game
idk how it happened but everything seems to be working lol
Saturn
The software reset was mandated by Sega for the Saturn[3] and is performed by pressing A+B+C+ START simultaneously. Saturn games should be able to respond to the software reset at any point (save for when memory operations are occurring[3]) and return the player back to the title screen[3]. If the player is already on the title screen, the software reset should send them back to the BIOS (or "audio CD control screen" as it was also called)[3].
Any configured options must be retained during a software reset[3].
You can load the game then L or R shoulder buttons, it will load into the memory manager, allowing to perform the operation that the game requires.
the abc+start combo is nice to skip certain screens when starting games
Ah I see why I couldn't figure it out I was using a 8bitdo m30 2,.4ghz and apparently it clones c and l and z and r so I guess I'm gonna need a new controller
Never though about pressing abc start before the tittle screen, the combo there makes it load the cdplayer, then I assumed pressing before would do the same, thanks.
You can try holding A when loading the game on mister, it will avoid booting the game and load the cdplayer, from there you can load the settings then the memory manager.
While you dont get a controller you cam map skipping Y and Z to have L and R.
at least I imagine to have skipped the startup of sf3.2, but it has been a few years...
the Retro-bit 3d saturn controller does this too, it’s very frustrating. the analogue triggers are the default L and R, while the digital ones are C and Z
Anyone else having issues saving in Magic Knights Rayearth? I played several hours, saved in-game, went to menu where it said it was saving, reset, loaded my save fine. Booted it up today and saves are gone. Checked my Nights into Dreams saves still there so idk what’s up with MKR.
Have you tried messing around with different input modes? I’m using an M30 2.4G and don’t have any issues with cloned inputs. It’s a fairly popular controller that I’m sure many others are using too
I can confirm I can enter the memory manager pressing L1 while starting the saturn core, also a+b+c+Start will send you to the cd player / bios screen with a game loaded. So no problems with my m30 2.4ghz. I have it set to dinput mode as it also does double duty with both sega genesis mini consoles.
Every now and then, in the Saturn core, my Saturn USB controller will continue directional input for an additional second or so without being pressed. Anyone else experiencing that?
It’s an original issue Sega Saturn USB controller.
Is yours the newer version with USB c? I got the old one
Has anyone gotten Saturn controllers to work with Snax64 on the newer SNAC supported Saturn cores, 5/16 and 5/20?
I get jumbled buttons on the regular controller and 3d Control pad is undetected.
I can't speak for Snax64, but on regular SNAC they work fine on my end.
Yep, mine’s the new one with USB-C
That might be why then I've tried every the different modes and mine still clones
I wonder if a firmware update could help?
Or if someone else with the old version of the controller can reproduce the issue
I have the old one. micro USB. As I mentioned before I have no problems with the controller. have you used the input test to double check? You do need to reconfigure the controller in main and inside the core if you switch modes.
Try pulling the Saturn cable out slightly from the adapter. Earlier adapter cables have issues with Saturn controllers if you plug them in all the way.
Next version of the core soon (Saturnday ?)
srg320 is trying to fix some bugs like with Fighters Megamix.
Yeah i saw hw commits yesterday
Multiple last times we saw a new core version within the next 48 hours.
I’m hoping for 480i fixes and lightgun support
that will have several positive knock-on effects
I'm on it for opening the issue.
That's a regression.
Last working version was on 2024-04-23.
hey ya’ll, been trying to search around a bit and came up with nothing so far - but are backup carts still not supported in the sega saturn core?
Yes , no support for carts curtently
ah darn, thanks for confirming!
been a while since ive messed with the saturn core
holy crud it's amazing
much improved the last time ive tried it
Yeah, to a complete noob like me it already feels “perfect”
It’s just a total blast to use the Saturn core
indeed
audio is good, no graphical glitches from what i can tell with all the games ive played. it's awesome
Love to see the Saturn love!
❤️
I been on that train since launch in the USA
It's cool that the core will also fill in some arcade stuff like Taito
SEGA super scaler, etc
Too Bad they never ported Kaiser Knuckle - That could have been cool
Same! I didn't get my own Saturn right at launch, but my friend who I hung out with every day got his on launch day. It was wild having that surprise launch. Terrible decision by Sega, but it was fun for us to suddenly be playing Virtua Fighter that day when we had no idea it would happen.
Got my own Saturn when Nights released.
SEGA was in full on Bungle Mode at that point
No no, it was Genesis that had blast
Why is the Sega Rally announcer such a goddamned troll?!? I'm just trying to enjoy my replay here and the cool music but no.. "WHO taught YOU how to drive?...WHO taught YOU how to drive?"
Husband of the where did you learn to fly lady.
Ever try the code in Wave Race Blue Storm on the Gamecube where it makes the announcer constantly insult you? So good!
That sounds amazing!
@naive whale hi, thanks for the great video on the Saroo, I've been using one for a few weeks and it's been awesome. it looks like we have the same version/firmware. it's interesting, I am able to run Street Fighter zero 3 with no issues (no config for this title) and Daytona USA has been good with the 500ms delay config
It may very well be bad files. I just need to build a new SD card
No chance in hell I’m plugging a Chinese SD card into any of my systems haha
I have a burner laptop I used but will format this SD card it came with. Amazing device !! playing my light gun games with the orange stunner gun. I also go the GDEMU for my Dreamcast, another amazing device. Broke out the MadCatz light gun for VC and HOTD

oh hell yeah
I think you'll be hard pressed to top this
Very easy to bottom it though
I first played this when randomly downloading games on SegaXtreme (well, one of the posted FTPs) around 2000. Had no idea what the game was. When I popped it in, it blew my mind. To this day it's one of the first games I load up on the Saturn when people who don't know the Saturn want to check it out. Love it.
Haven't visited a while on this core, how far has it progressed?
#1046941029296779344 message
Hooohhh~
Bringing my question here as the general channel is just useless:
I want to stress test my SSD connect through a SATA to USB cable on my MiSTer. Any CD based console super picky about CD timings that I could use to test it?
It could be Saturn, TGCD, PSX or any CD based core
Maybe ask from #help?
I was thinking people either from the PSX or Saturn channels might know from the top of their heads which games are super finicky timing wise but yeah
PSX is probably the most intense on that front, but I doubt it would be a problem.
Try playing a lot of Valkyrie profile. The game can lockup on original hardware if the disc is hard to read or the motor is worn down.
Can confirm that Valkyrie Profile is super finicky on original hardware.
Thanks @open swan and @pearl harbor
It's very very unlikely to be an issue. USB 2 is about 480Mb, which is orders of magnitude more than a real CD drive. Linux will also pre read and cache part of the file for you. If you want to stress test your setup, read and write files from the command line and benchmark that.
On paper microSD is the “slowest” and it’s never once been an issue. A lot of folks get way too hung up on media speeds when it has effectively zero impact on a mister
Your Neo geo game may take 3 seconds to load instead of 2.5!
I assume cartridge based cores shouldn’t be affected at all
Yup, exactly @untold lintel
I don’t think I even notice the difference between an A2 rated card and one that isn’t haha.
Isn't the sd card speed also limited by the slot? What speed is the sd card slot on the de10 even rated for?
SD cards are great and can produce the least issues. Unless the cost for a 1TB is too high for you or you feel like 512GB is too little space.
512GB is more than enough for me since I use CHD compression.
Yeah, I don't know if it's really important to have complete librarys for the systems. I just have everything I like and could like.
I do the same, but I get and see the value of having a complete library and just randomly loading stuff up. That seems fun.
But I don’t do that myself, haha
I just moved to a 4TB SSD just because I needed all of those Japanese mahjong games for Saturn, PSX, MegaCD and PCECD 🤭
4TB of mahjong.
lewdjongs really underprepresented on mister
Sounds like somewhere you'd be eating right now
I ate there once. Everything was deep fried, even the soda.
"Fried Coke or Deep Fried Soda is a frozen Coca-Cola-flavored batter that is deep-fried and then topped with Coca-Cola syrup, whipped cream, cinnamon sugar, and a cherry. It was introduced by inventor Abel Gonzales Jr."
I just had toes amputated after reading that
Holy shit lmao
That would blow out my gustatory abilities for days
My parents wouldn't even let me have maraschino cherries due to the dye
there's a whole genre out there waiting for you to discover it, Robby

oh hell yeah
Woah holy shit!
How would that even work without splitscreen!?
how did sonic team handle two player on the Megadrive?
Sometimes splitscreen, sometimes not!
My favorite Sonic team coop was Yuji Naka going to jail with Taisuke Sazaki for insider trading
I always thought that their implementation of the two player split screen mode in Sonic 2 was hilarious where they just chose to squish each player's half. Play that on a 16:9 screen stretched out for the ultimate in stretched screen action!
political speech! burn the heretic!

Sega Saturn portable with Fenrir.
I'm diving deeper into Saturn
Which will be nice to have already got a multitap and like 5 separate controllers not including the twin stick
The snac is awesome
I don't think the saturn is fully compatible yet, but hopefully it gets there soon
i got a snax for my N64 controller and the fact that it just worked blew my mind
lol same
I've been playing Ocarina of Time and it's so cool just plugging it in and everything works exactly as it would on the console
Also super cool that rumble paks are supported
With SNAC, I believe it's fully compatible now outside of lightgun support.
Anything major left for the core to implement?
Just my soul, so I can become one with it.
Ahem, seriously though, I think lightgun support is the last major thing? I believe carts are also not supported yet other than the RAM expansions.
Are the different ram upgrade carts supported now?
I'm pretty sure the SNK ones aren't, but the other ones are.
Is there any smart auto setting of these or do you need to do it manually per game?
I always just have the 4MB one enabled by default in the core settings.
Or rather "DRAM 4M". I don't remember if it's actually 4MB specifically. 😅
My memory of this is rusty, but I think there are certain games that can't use the 4mb but use the other one, which is why you can get switching carts
I'm very excited for light gun lol
Being able to play the original HOTD with Wii mote would be really nice
The Wii remote is shockingly good for lightgun games. Even gyro, when done well, is pretty good. I played through HotD arcade version on my Steam Deck (in docked mode) using a PS5 controller's gyro, and it worked really well.
doesn't like only 1 saturn controller work via snac at any given time?
Some games supports multitap for just two players... Those should work via snac also (if you happen to have a multitap)
What’s the current status of Assault Suit Leynos 2 with the latest iteration of the core?
well, my point being, is that there's no reason to order more than 1 adapter
Only if also going to use it on the reflex adapt 🙂
multiple should work fine on reflex or blisster, true
not blisster that uses a different pinout
What is missing/needs to be implemented in order for SNAC lightgun to work, and for mouse/Wii mote light gun emulation? Does srg320 need to work on these or are these things someone else who has done them for other cores would need to look at?
@inner token is the SNAC genius
Good shout, he is the man there.
Is the Saturn SNAC design finalised and available to purchase? Is it an adaptor like NES, SNES etc. or a bespoke bit of kit like PSX, N64?
I dunno, I use the one that @unkempt kelp sells and it's been great. I've used that to help blue test controllers for him since I've got a few wacky Saturn ones.

Nice, so uses the standard SNAC adaptor
you can get the board printed from jlc or pcbway or whatever, then solder on the connectors
Yeah I have just been letting it sit in attract mode when I have it on, I think there was a regression, now it stalls after a while, a couple updates ago I could let it sit for hours,
it all changes dynamically, in the next core will work longer , or shorter , or without problems 🙂
Almost 3 weeks without a new core
But the current one is quite nice for most games so it hasn’t felt like 3 weeks 👍
I'm not complaining 🙂
Yo calm down, pinhead.
Sheesh, I wish the Saturn had gotten the recognition it deserved way back when.
It did, in Japan
The issue with the Saturn was it was too expensive and the launch titles were quite lacklustre. Even looking back on it now you can still see its shortfalls.
It had some great games still though
The Saturn is an awesome system unless you like transparency games.
launched with Virtua Fighter
had lackluster games
pick one
Tekken 7 > Virtua Fighter 1
no
To be fair, the SEGA Saturn port was pretty rushed out.
by what standard
its gameplay is wonderful, fluid challenging.
there’s one bug i’ve come across thru extensive hours of play
Is there an up to date compatibility list for the Saturn core? Or are we at the point where it’s pretty much it more or less all works except for a few edge cases?
The issue was seeing the likes of Daytona on launch. The 2D stuff is really where it shines even now
We didn’t know any better. Even Daytona looked pretty good at the time. No, it wasn’t arcade perfect and ridge racer looked better, but it was 3d at home and I didn’t hear any of my friends saying “this is crap”
I know that at the time, I thought that 3D was a great technical achievement, but I never (even now) felt that it advanced gameplay, and in a lot of cases, it downright got in the way of it.
Even now it does sometimes
Article on the subject: https://www.segasaturnshiro.com/2024/03/04/daytona-usa-on-the-sega-saturn-youve-been-lied-to/
And gameplay is definitely subjective, but the “graphics” were definitely not the brakes that modern viewpoints tend to apply to Saturn’s momentum.
youtube slop makers lied!?!?
My favorite genre of games is transparency and the Saturn had almost none of those games
John Cena didn’t show up until well past the Saturn or PSX
So true, you are very wise. Thank you.
I am just waiting for the epic 4 part miniseries where Pandamonium reviews Daytona and tracks down every person who played it in the arcade and shows how it turned their life around.
I liked Daytona but I was more wow’d by the massive theme park like multiplayer setup than the game itself.
It’s a fun game for sure, and I enjoy it.
I’m probably the wrong person to comment on gameplay; I hated racing games until one of the few games I got for the PSX around launch was Ridge Racer. RR1 is still the only racing game I have played more than 5 minutes
I saw Ridge Racer first so it stole the first impression wow factor of a blistering fast polygonal racer for me.
And of course I played Hard Drivin’ before that
Haha, “play” is an interesting verb to use in conjunction with Hard Drivin’
lol the arcade version was alright
It had force feedback!
Haptic feedback I mean
Shit was wild
Hmm, actually I am sort of lying. Outrun was, is, and always will be fun. I have spent more than 5 minutes with outrun.
But in my defense it isn’t really a racing game.
Sega Rally for the win "Game ovaaar yeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!"
Hard drivin’ wasn’t in any of the local arcades. I might have had a chance to try it on vacation, but it wouldn’t have been often.
Sega Rally blew me away because of the physics
It's got a zebra!! And when your finished a guy creeps up behind you going "ffiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiNISH!"
What happens when you win in RR.... nothing that's what!
Also the name entry screen is so beautiful! With those big chunky pink purple letters! And then when you hit end the remaining letters all scatter to the four corners of the earth! Satisfying 😌
You'll take your dithered fake transparency and you'll like it!
Or, just play it via composite on an old 13" RCA tv and experience the way Palmer Lucky intended
@burnt matrix obviously doesn’t care about heirloom quality graphics
I'm getting an IO Analog Pro! I'll finally join the cool kids CRT club!
I see that Robby is susceptible to peer presure. How can we further utilize this knowledge?
I can say with absolute certainty. That the cool kids play Magic Knight Fat Baby Earth.
And Virtua Fighter Kids Playground Super
MAN, that game still won't boot for me when I use an MGL to launch it!
are you using the 4MB ram cart? Need a lot of extra memory to store those big heads
Could the saturn core output 480i over hdmi? One of my misters is connected to an Oled TV using 1440p and I hate the artifacts on 480i games such as VF2. I have a Wii connected via composite and 480i does not look as bad as I thought it would.
I mean, it's Virtua Fighter Kids, not Virtua Fighter Man! It won't boot unless you embrace your inner fat baby!
I guess on analog output 480i it will be eventually implemented. What I meant was over HDMI output. So my modern TV can do the scaling over from mister 480i to 4k over HDMI.
it'd have to be a new feature in the mister scaler itself it can't output interlaced resolutions at the moment
Is that a genre?
The dithers were always a point of shame
He said his tv handles wii via composite well, so I think he wants to bypass the scalar.
Eventually it should work, but I don’t think the Saturn core is configured properly yet?
hey guys, how you doing? I'm getting a black screen trying to launch anygame on the saturn core, anyone have an idea?
boot.rom is placed on the games/saturn
Are you seeing the bios (the Saturn menu) when you boot up the core?
Nope, just to be sure, the original bios is a bin file i have to rename to boot.rom, right?
All bios i found online is a .bin
All i got is a black screen from the start
It's been so long since I put my bios in the folder that I honestly don't remember if it was originally a .bin file. Have you tried a different bios file to see if it's just the one you have that isn't working?
You could also try to manually boot the bios from the OSD as well just to see what happens.
And yes, it should be called boot.com
I tried some bin files from cdromance, will try some more later, none of them booted the saturn on the core startup
Use composite! All things become clear. 😁
more like all things become smear.
Difference between "translucent" windows in Sega Rally and not. 😄
I guess everyone who owned a Saturn in 95 was using RGB on PVMs
Saturn is the console that is permanently plugged into my PVM so logic checks out
oh just saw this, maybe that's what i'm doing wrong, will try it later
That’s 100% wrong so hopefully renaming that will fix it
that's a print from a youtube video, i've tried load the boot.bin manually, tried changing the name to boot.rom but i couldn't boot any game yet
i tried the ones on cdromance, will try a few of them later, both methods still works or only the boot.rom?
I forgot, I’m waiting in the carpool line to drop my kids off at summer camp. When I get home I’ll check it out.
Got here a little early lol
hahaha nice!
thanks for the help!
