The bios should be placed under the name boot.rom in games/saturn/

cosmic ginkgo

so i cant dump my chd files all together in the games/saturn/ folder?

mortal mist

As I wrote above, the games should be in separate folders, you can of course do you want to 🙂

cosmic ginkgo

what do you mean boot.rom?

mortal mist

The bios must be named boot.rom

cosmic ginkgo

so if i have bug!.chd i need to rename that to boot.rom

and have it in its own folder

is that correct?

No, console bios = boot.rom

Damn I didn't remember this game was so choppy, rose tinted glasses I guess 😂

burnt matrix
# autumn crystal Earlier I was wondering why Grandia was slowing down so much at times on this co...

Yeah haha. It's why whenever someone comments about any core slowing down my immediate response is for them to check against real hardware. It's definitely not out of the realm of possibility for it to be a core issue, especially on a core that's still in active development, but a lot of people really do forget just how bad perf was on first gen 3D consoles.

Anyways, appreciate you doing due diligence and checking it first. 🍻

Bruh I used to have no problem hardware/software modding/troubleshooting anything with Google’s help before. I told my roommate how outside of this discord it’s been actually impossible for me to troubleshoot anything on Mister. He said I must be just stupid or something. A week later Google told him Joe Pesci was in Godfather Part 1 and 2. That was a fun argument I got to have with him. By the end though he finally understood what I was talking about xD

I am trying to play the english patched 1.1.1 version of Grandia. It just freezes on disc 1 at the Sega logo screen. Any thoughts on what might be going on? I have tried the last two core test builds (dual RAM). I patched to be region free, but I am using the 1.01a US BIOS and the core is set to USA.

#

Tried various other BIOS versions and no fix found.

#

Not sure what fixed, but I re-patched and checked the separate tracks option. I also selected none in the core next to the cartridge option.

ancient surge
#

You might of had a bad dump. I can boot into the game with no issues pretty consistently.

#

Might also be a problem with the RAM. This core is sensitive to RAM timings, so if it's a consistent problem across multiple games, then it might be the RAM.

Good to know. Thanks!

If so, would be cool to have that added someday …maybe on a bigger/more powerful FPGA.

severe whale
#

@mortal mist any specific issues you know of?

ripe valley
#

I'm no kuba, but I can resume a little bit.

  • Some display error on staff credits roll for Virtua Fighter 2;

  • Time Gal & Ninja Hayate stop after the third level;

  • Die Hard Arcade stops for about a minute on a black screen (and goes back to normal after) when taking the elevator;

  • Some sounds are incorrect on Bug, Panzer Dragoon Zwei and Sakura Taisen 2 (at least);

  • Slowdowns on Dead or Alive (should be partially fixed with some fitter option when compiling);

  • Some text-boxes incorrectly rendered randomly on Dino Island;

  • Multi disc games without a save file creation between disc change could not detect the next disc inserted;

  • Missing letter on "LOSE" message on Cube Battler;

  • Mortal Kombat II could crash with some fatalities displayed and a recent regression on the publisher screen;

  • Interlacing mode is incomplete.

  • Users with older RAM could have some corruptions on sound/music or even freezes.

  • Missing MPEG card implementation, light guns, mouse, keyboard, floppy disc operator and incomplete SNAC support.

#

The list seems long, but it's rather impressive so far, and even better than most software emulators in terms of compatibility and accuracy of the core (even against Mednafen).

I tried it awhile back, but didn't really like it. Just feels off having HDR on retro games.

As for black frame insertion, I love that it gets rid of the sample-and-hold persistence blur, but I hate the constant flicker which is distracting. I also just prefer to have VRR enabled, which isn't possible with black frame insertion. Sadly, the best way to reduce persistence blur on modern displays is to simply increase frame rates, which just isn't possible with retro games.

It's likely nothing can be done to address the ones that do not perform well, to be honest. Just an educated guess though

Even a 3.0 replacement does not 100% guarantee success with core saturn at this stage. I'm not surprised , people are asking about it.

I am not surprised that people are asking about it. Everyone would like to have a working and stable core

tawdry lion

The same user has asked many times

#

while there's no harm in asking, I don't think they realize that this will likely not be fixed. It'd be best to just order new RAM

#

If people have recommendations on a specific wheel to get, I'm all ears

#

If your goal is wide compatibility, I recommend the Logitech G29

#

lots of stuff on and off MiSTer supports it

faint sparrow
#

Cool, that was what i was reading as well

#

And there aren't any differences between using it on Saturn core and other cores?

hearty carbon
#

how well does something like that work with FFB?

#

I know they can be pretty impressive with games that support it but I've never used one with a MiSTer or older consoles.

faint sparrow
#

Ya I'm curious if ffb actually works. I've read a few posts that seem to say it does but I haven't read that it works definitively

hearty carbon
#

They're cool wheels for sure

#

I've almost bought one dozens of times

#

I'm already a flight sim nerd though, I can't be falling down the racing sim hole.

faint sparrow

Ya, I like the g29 but I do not like the $300 price tag

#

lol same, I have enough specialty controllers. I'm trying to keep the missus from getting concerned hahaha

clear condor
#

It periodically goes on sale for $230, and occasionally goes even lower than that

clear condor
hearty carbon
#

Does the PSX core not do FFB effects? Or the N64?

#

Those both had 'rumble' at the very least. Though, not the kind of nuanced FFB you'd buy a wheel for.

clear condor
# hearty carbon Does the PSX core not do FFB effects? Or the N64?

Mostly no. The PSX will make the Jogcon work via SNAC, but there's no way yet to pass the Jogcon FFB through Linux to an FFB wheel. The DualShock and N64 have simple rumble, not FFB, and there isn't currently any way to map rumble effects to a simple FFB wiggle effect

dim tulip
# tawdry lion while there's no harm in asking, I don't think they realize that this will likel...

Do you mean in regard to the 2.5 ram working? That I can understand but it will kinda suck if a 2.9/3.0 ram lottery win is a requirement with the finished core, was hoping that as it matured that element would be more stable. I’m also very dumb when it comes to technical stuff so I apologize in advance if I sound kinda silly

I wonder if anyone with technical knowledge could explain more in depth why the issues occur/can’t be fixed. On my end at least both of my 3.0s seem to work well with the core, but it sucks for other folks that are still having issues

faint sparrow
clear condor
#

It will have neither rumble nor FFB

faint sparrow
clear condor
faint sparrow
#

Man, that's disappointing tho. It would be nice to have one wheel that works across all the systems

#

Is there any hope to add rumble to a wheel like the g29, or is that just not something that will ever happen?

clear condor
#

It's possible that you could interpret rumble as a simple vibration FFB effect, but I haven't heard of any efforts to do it

#

Note that PS1 had a lot of different ways to play driving games, and they all have some compromises. Like, the NeGcon has no rumble or FFB, but it's the only option that gives you analog accel/brake. The DualShock has rumble, but it has deadzones and digital accel/brake.

Meanwhile, I don't think any Saturn controllers had rumble/FFB of any kind

noble escarp
#

Some PS1 era wheels had rumble. Either by emulating a negcon with rumble, or a dualshock.

#

As nolbin said, saturn had no rumble at all.
A real wheel mapped to saturn would be usefull by emulating the saturns wheel or the 3d pad (as it can use the analog triggers).

noble escarp
thorn pagoda
#

i guess mister could natively pass it rumble effects too

#

afaik some real psx racing wheels did that

noble escarp
#

Yes. Wheels that works in negcon (with rumble) or dualshock mode

#

But psxcore does not support negcon rumble 😦

thorn pagoda
#

are you sure? i have a feeling i found out it works in colin mccrea 2 at some point

#

was years ago now though

noble escarp
#

I'm sure. I was going to implement it... but I know nothing of fpga programing XD

thorn pagoda
#

it might be pretty straightforward to do you could ask rob

#

its not a whole dualshock really it's the simpler dual-analog w/rumble mode afaik

noble escarp
#

I did it on duckstation (ps1 emulator)

#

It's mostly a "dualshock" as it needs to know a lot of commands. Device must report it's possible modes, actuators, and so on.
And there's also the legacy rumble mode that uses only one actuator. This one is simple to implement.

thorn pagoda
#

ah

noble escarp
#

Btw usb wheel to real saturn adapter is in the works 🙂

warped saddle
#

does the negcon use a different rumble protocol than a normal dualshock?

noble escarp
#

There's just 2 type of rumble on psx (3 if you count the JOGCON). The legacy one and the modern "dualshock" one.
The original negcon does not support any rumble. But later on some wheels got released for ps1 that implemented negcon with support for rumble.

#

Dualshock rumble requires some command exchange to enable rumble.
Legacy rumble just requires sending some specific bits at the poll command.

#

Basically every ps1 device could have legacy rumble and it would not break compatibility wih software.
But dualshock style rumble is more complicate... Like namco games does not work if you present it with a negcon that supports dualshock style rumble.

#

We can move this to PSX channel.

The software reset was mandated by Sega for the Saturn[3] and is performed by pressing A+B+C+ START simultaneously. Saturn games should be able to respond to the software reset at any point (save for when memory operations are occurring[3]) and return the player back to the title screen[3]. If the player is already on the title screen, the software reset should send them back to the BIOS (or "audio CD control screen" as it was also called)[3].

Any configured options must be retained during a software reset[3].

I first played this when randomly downloading games on SegaXtreme (well, one of the posted FTPs) around 2000. Had no idea what the game was. When I popped it in, it blew my mind. To this day it's one of the first games I load up on the Saturn when people who don't know the Saturn want to check it out. Love it.

Bringing my question here as the general channel is just useless: elmorise

#

I want to stress test my SSD connect through a SATA to USB cable on my MiSTer. Any CD based console super picky about CD timings that I could use to test it?

#

It could be Saturn, TGCD, PSX or any CD based core

tawny forge
#

I was thinking people either from the PSX or Saturn channels might know from the top of their heads which games are super finicky timing wise but yeah

open swan
#

Try playing a lot of Valkyrie profile. The game can lockup on original hardware if the disc is hard to read or the motor is worn down.

pearl harbor
#

Can confirm that Valkyrie Profile is super finicky on original hardware.

tawny forge
#

Thanks @open swan and @pearl harbor

viscid token
#

It's very very unlikely to be an issue. USB 2 is about 480Mb, which is orders of magnitude more than a real CD drive. Linux will also pre read and cache part of the file for you. If you want to stress test your setup, read and write files from the command line and benchmark that.

#

On paper microSD is the “slowest” and it’s never once been an issue. A lot of folks get way too hung up on media speeds when it has effectively zero impact on a mister

Your Neo geo game may take 3 seconds to load instead of 2.5!

I assume cartridge based cores shouldn’t be affected at all

I don’t think I even notice the difference between an A2 rated card and one that isn’t haha.

hardy lodge
#

Isn't the sd card speed also limited by the slot? What speed is the sd card slot on the de10 even rated for?

burnt matrix
#

SD cards are great and can produce the least issues. Unless the cost for a 1TB is too high for you or you feel like 512GB is too little space.

#

512GB is more than enough for me since I use CHD compression.

hardy lodge
#

Yeah, I don't know if it's really important to have complete librarys for the systems. I just have everything I like and could like.

burnt matrix

I do the same, but I get and see the value of having a complete library and just randomly loading stuff up. That seems fun.

But I don’t do that myself, haha

I always just have the 4MB one enabled by default in the core settings.

Or rather "DRAM 4M". I don't remember if it's actually 4MB specifically. 😅

My memory of this is rusty, but I think there are certain games that can't use the 4mb but use the other one, which is why you can get switching carts

#

The issue was seeing the likes of Daytona on launch. The 2D stuff is really where it shines even now

trim nimbus
#

We didn’t know any better. Even Daytona looked pretty good at the time. No, it wasn’t arcade perfect and ridge racer looked better, but it was 3d at home and I didn’t hear any of my friends saying “this is crap”

#

I know that at the time, I thought that 3D was a great technical achievement, but I never (even now) felt that it advanced gameplay, and in a lot of cases, it downright got in the way of it.

#

Even now it does sometimes

And gameplay is definitely subjective, but the “graphics” were definitely not the brakes that modern viewpoints tend to apply to Saturn’s momentum.

I’m probably the wrong person to comment on gameplay; I hated racing games until one of the few games I got for the PSX around launch was Ridge Racer. RR1 is still the only racing game I have played more than 5 minutes
