For Rayman (and possibly for Guardian Heroes), I was wrong earlier, it seems to be related with the SMPC changes.
I've seen some possible race condition on OREG when the INTBACK command is used/aborted.
There was a similar issue on Kronos 3 years ago, a flag incorrectly set.
If you can pause the results now and ask everyone what config they're using, I think it would be useful. Up to you of course.
So far I have been doing it myself , testing and gathering information from others from github

I've seen something wrong when the INTBACK break/continue request command is set on register OREG.
The SF register should not be like that.
And Kronos had the same problem like 3 years ago, same bug.
I'm trying something on my side and doing some tests.

I am just testing single ram - standard config with 3 year old hardware,... or it is 4 years now
I've not seen any compatibility changes between my two systems (Single and Dual v2.9 RAM) so far.
Differencies are more with older RAM sticks (v2.4/v2.5).
Do you need new SDRAM? Idk which version you have.

I think it's valuable to try and show if the core is completely single SDRAM capable

That's why we are filling issue reports on the GitHub, he could see for regressions quite rapidly (less than 24h).
The only regression I noticed with this build was the transparency in Puyo Puyo 2 breaking again.
Otherwise everything else is an improvement.
Maybe I should test Cube Battler again just to see if that regressed, but I'm at work so I can't check.

yes, I tried it earlier and it is now as it should be (at least to me eyes!). Still no sound on Pro Pinball .... but appears srg320 is not focusing on sound so I'm not worrying about that for the moment
You're right, the sound should be done at a later time, if srg320 is working like other devs I know of on the Saturn system.
while Pinball Graffiti is not one of the best games on the sytem I hope that the fix for this game (a pretty big bug) has trickled down to help fix /improve other games.

I'm testing on 2.4 ram, no fixes for the problematic games (opened issue on github, not considered as today). Daytona USA has the correct menu now. Fighters Megamix works quite good, has some slowdowns but i don't know if were there on original hardware.X-men Vs Street Fighter give black screen after the NOW LOADING screen. Guardian Heroes does not load.

With today's update, I was actually able to finish the first battle in Shining Force III. First time I was able to do that. No idea if I was just lucky though on the crash front.

@unkempt kelp I have checked WORMS and CORPSE KILLER, there is indeed no pad response in the menu (tested on dual and single sdram)
is there anything else i could be missing thats stopping me from loading games? I have the 3.0 ram, ive downloaded various romsets inc the redump, i download the rbf file and load it - games and bios (ive tried various ones) are in games/saturn bios renamed to boot.rom - i just get the cd audios screen , chd and bin/cue just wont load up, this happens on both my misters so im wondering if ive missed something in the backend
my two misters are a copy of each other though so i think its a software rather than hardware issue, one is digital one is analogue

Corpse Killer works ok with core 20240202 so it;s regression
The SMPC changes have broken some games and race conditions between two registers have appeared.
I'm trying to change and revert some lines of the code right now - for testing later on my systems.
I'm compiling it a the moment and will test it on my side just after.
Won't share anything until I'm sure I've not broken something else beyond repair.
I've already fully reverted the SMPC changes on 2024/02/02, but I've broken Primal Rage and Discworld once more.
I had to read some corrected SMPC documentations since then and source codes of other SW emulators (when accessible).

Doesn't work like expected, sorry @mortal mist.
If I'm reverting some changes on the SMPC chip concerning the SF bit register/status flag and/or the delay on the INTBACK command, sometimes the core don't even start the BIOS.
So we will need to wait for srg320.

But I'm almost sure about the SMPC changes are the cause of the regressions on Guardian Heroes, Rayman, Worms, Corpse Killer controller responses.
Either the SF (status flag) is incorrectly set somewhere between all commands on the chip or the SMPC is caching contrary instructions (race condition between INTBACK, INTBACK_BREAK and INTBACK_PEND) now during a delay.
To me it sounds like new coding clashing with the old coding, and it's why we're in this period of two steps forward two steps back for the last few builds.
Which just means that there will eventually be that breakthrough where everything comes together and corrects itself.
The SCU changes are also pretty important for the next steps on the core.
Any news if it will support the serial port in the back of the saturn via snac?

I've something to share with you now.
So, I've full reverted the INTBACK and SF (status flag) mechanism to the 20240202 version.
And added only the delay on the INTBACK command for Primal Rage and Discworld support.
The core seems stable for our internal tests.
Guardian Heroes works once more, Assault Suits Leynos 2 works partially (crashes within the first 30 secs, so something else on the VDP1 needs to be found).
I've only compiled a Single RAM version.
That's complete patchwork, but "it just works".
I can compile the Dual version too, but gimme me 30 mins off-time.
I know, I responded with a serious face for distracting you. 😏
I've shared that patchwork version for testing here, if you can regain control on some of the problematic games discovered since yesterday.

Taromaru seems to be fixed with the last SCU changes on core 20240210, I cannot reproduce the crash of the core after the boat sequence.
Tested with the Single and Dual RAM versions just a moment ago.

Tenchi wo Kurau II works once again with the SMPC changes.
That's not even a PR, just a revert of the SMPC code to a previous state and adding a line on the INTBACK command.
srg320 could do it within a second (or even do something better).
I tried something else all day long but it was breaking other stuffs.
So, just reverting and adding some milliseconds before the INTBACK command could fire anything seems to be okay (other SW emus are doing the exact same).

This is my unstable updater. Mods can remove it if they'd like. It's based off of @tough star's PSX updater. PaisleyBoxers made a few improvements to it. Comment out exit if you want to get the unstable main as well. This makes an _Unstable folder and puts all unstable cores there. N64 isn't included since those are test builds, but there's another script for just N64.

I have 3 copies of Astal: 1S, 2S, 3S. In latest core 1S and 2S don’t boot but 3S does.

I've updated an opened issue yesterday, as finally, it's just the 20240202 SMPC code with a single line from the 20240204 changes on that module on the INTBACK command.
WAIT_CNT <= 20'd800; was added as it is needed for Discworld and Primal Rage (Mednafen does the same after some tests on the real hardware).
srg320 changes partially the INTBACK command and OREG register on the 20240204 and I think there is a good reason why (maybe some ressources as my compile is at 96% of LUT usage with that revert and the 20240210 version is at 94%).
Has anyone else been able to complete SotN patched on the Saturn core? It seems to get stuck at the Succubus fight for me. I can't seem to find any complaints from others about the compatibility.
I'm on single RAM analog IO, latest build (but also happens on the update_all build). I've yet to try an unpatched bin/cue though. Perhaps it's the patch causing issues.

So I think @unkempt kelp had a good question about the compatibility chart. When it says only 5 games completable, I assume that means that it's so low simply because nobody has tried to complete every game?
If so, I wonder if we could amend it to say "confirmed completable" or something, so people don't see that number and run away lol

I just think it's unclear what "completed" means in that context, when people see only 5 games are completable they might take it literally

srg320 fixed the mess done on the SMPC changes from 2024/02/04.
Some status flags were incorrectly set between step actions on the chip & contrary commands were fired and catched at the same time (race condition).
That's why sometimes you could boot Guardian Heroes and sometimes not. Or other games literally could not respond to inputs anymore.
Like "read the input" and "stop reading" at the same time.

If I want to see if there’s been any change on old ram I usually try sega rally (music and engine sounds drop out during first race) and nights (music drops out when game starts)
I have the SNAC core but I'm not getting any input out of my 3d control pad, I have snac set to on and port 1. pad 1 is set to off, but nothing happens with the controller, even after rebooting the MiSTer and going back into the core after saving my settings.
How can I fix this?
In 2019 made 53 SDRAM modules by hand in one day. It took 14 hours? I was completely shook. Haven't soldered an SDRAM module in 4 or more years!

Messing around with the Saturn core just now. It really feels like it must be close to being “finished”, unless I’ve just been lucky with my testing
its similar to N64...some games probably are "FINISHED" feature set wise. Others aren't. So some games you get the 1:1 hardware experience for sure
N64 core feels amazing, aside from Conker’s being broken, which I am desperate to play, but holding off until it works 😭

@gloomy hedge has 2.5V and had luck on the core updates getting games to work that never did
I have 2.9V and 3.0V duals...I retired my 2.5V module

I tested MMX4 USA and JAP on the new Saturn_unstable_20240212_18e57f core.
The problem with bosses' speeches at JAP continues in the same way. In the USA the game doesn't crash on bosses but sometimes the audio of the bosses music stops playing. Features some artifacts in Mega Man 8.

My friend just tested Saturn core for the first time with his v2.5 sdram that he got from ebay years ago and it's running fine like 2.9/3.0 rams. Anyone else with 2.5 ram that's running fine?

my 2.5 doesn't cut off audio in sega rally anymore. I think it's better but still not as good as 2.9/3.0

I have been meaning to get a new one to build a dual ram setup, but I basically just need to build a new tower- I have a blisster that I never use, and I want a newer digital io board for the extra io on snack port and the ability to run dual ram

Except for a pop with sega rally when the rally starts it all works great

Ok did some quick tests of 20240212 build. Daytona USA intro roll music doesn't drop anymore but other games I tried are about the same. Sega Rally music drop during intro, Cotton 2 sound drop/crash, etc.
I guess there are just too much variance amongst old rams. Wonder why that is

If you've ever had a zipped Saturn game, the CHD will be roughly that size, as it seems to rip out all of the "fill up the blank space on the CD" space.

I left my machine running last night on 1500 individually 7zip’d multi-bin files, for each 1) un-7z 2) binmerge to single bin 3) chdman to chd 4) combine multidisc games to single folder
I wonder if it’s done yet…
Why are you doing the binmerge step before chdman instead of just unpack the 7z and then chdman?? Do you need both chd and cue+bin formats or something?
I've never done a binmerge operation before doing the CHD part.
quicker just to redownload the CHD set
binmerge only takes about half a second so I just left it in the pipeline. SSD write cycles be damned
I found another problem.
Monster Slider seems to have a bug that causes cutscenes to not work properly. The cutscene where the characters interact with each other has a habit of just stopping randomly like it's struggling to load the text and animation, and the small cutscene before a match starts weirdly causes characters to recite all their voice clips. It also crashed trying to load a match, but I think that was just a fluke since it happened only once.
I don't know if you really wanted to binmerge though. The CHD script that I use works with multi-bins
You end up with the same effect, AFAIK. If you uncompress with chdman you just get a single bin back

Monster Slider. It's one of the falling block puzzle games in a similar vein to Puyo Puyo, with the main gimmick being that you can shift the board to make the pieces slide to the left or right.

The cutscene is not that drawn out. Normally characters only say one line then the match starts, but here the game is cycling through every line and dragging it out a lot longer than it should.
I see that in many games there is a problem with strange lines , glitches in graphics.
Yeah, it’s most noticeable in Croc, I believe.

Vampire Hunter and Savior are broken with the SMPC changes, I can use them once again when reverting.
BUT, my last internal test version have Primal Rage and Discworld broken once again.
That's why I've not shared it and not creating a pseudo-'fork', as we want srg320 to do it accurately and correctly.
The SMPC code before the 2024/02/04 version was almost working but it was hacky.
The new code is more accurate when testing against real hardware, so 'let him cook'.

Yeah like I said before, I'm trying to vet the Japanese games in particular, since people have a habit of ignoring them when it comes to trying to find problems.
I'm not blaming anyone in particular, since SEGA Saturn is inherently a Japan biased system in terms of game library.

The only thing I'm dreading is eventually trying to vet the glut of adventure/visual novel type games, because the SEGA Saturn actually has a lot of those type of games.

Before you buy new ram, try resetting the core settings. I was having SOTN sound issues that I thought were RAM related, and they were due to a removed core debug option still being enabled.
The freaking game is burned into my brain from speedrunning it thousands of times. Every time I try to escape it, Jim comes back for more. 😉

still have the same problems here on multisystem ram. sega rally drops engine sounds and music, managed to get through a couple of races on first boot, but only maybe 20-30 seconds after that. seems to drop faster with the inside cockpit view. no music in nights (does nights music work for everyone else?).

For context I was just using an unmodified version of the game, so I'm not sure if the fan translation changes anything or not.
So I'm assuming it's a regression if it did work previously, but now it doesn't.

we ran into an issue with the Castlevania SotN utlimate translations soft locking after the succubus fight

but the re-dump worked fine

I think so, is this after resetting the settings? For me, the issue was that some option that was enabled or disabled on an earlier build was no longer exposed through the menu on a more recent one. I had to reset the settings to unset the option that was giving me issues.
Just want to make sure you try everything before you make hardware purchases when the problem might not be hardware related

It appears that @ripe valley marked that bug as fixed with the 2/12 build. I just played slightly into level 2 and the only thing I noticed was some garbled on screen text at the end of stage 1
