I closed 5 issues or regressions today, that's great.

But, I have some troubles with Assault Suits Leynos 2 with the last core version (20240202) now.
The game tends to freeze after 4/5 seconds of gameplay on stage 1.
Could someone test on their system and report if a regression is there (or not) ?

Was Assault Suit Laynos 2 one of those "problematic" games that always caused issues?

shadow merlin
#

I'm not sure, but I feel like it used to get further into the game than it does now On the previous version of the core Assault Suit Leynos 2 doesn't crash but it does quickly get a lot of graphical corruption over the screen.

The graphics errors go away if you go press start to go into the menu but it eventually comes back

#

Nothing new here, just writing down some issues that weren't reported on the log.

mortal mist
#

Dead or Alive has slowdowns , but in general it does not work for me as you described in the issue

#

There are slowdowns, but it doesn't work worse from fight to fight.

ripe valley
#

On my system, the first stage is okay, the second have some bearable slowdowns, and after the third one each move will slow down like half speed.

mortal mist
#

I have finished all the fights , some e.g. fight 6 was without any slowdown

drifting frigate
# ripe valley On my system, the first stage is okay, the second have some bearable slowdowns, ...

This is the same for me. Leifang's stage slows down. If there are two ninjas with petals/leaves it slows down. But the fight with Zach at the beginning is almost always full speed apart from edge cases like barrier falls. So for me it does work differently from fight to fight. But it's definitely much better than it used to be, overall. Still, I'm confirming I see what you see on multiple MiSTers.

ripe valley
#

Thanks for your feedbacks.

#

I will adjust the issue report.

burnt flax
#

Wish I'd seen the SF3 GitHub issue sooner. I just dropped a savegame in the the thread for the USA version that he can quickly test with. I suspended the game when it was Grace's turn so he should just be able to load the save, cast Heal, and watch it freeze.

#

I'm sure the people posting in the thread mean well but linking a video does nothing to help. He needs to reproduce it himself. The save game should help with that.

tough star
#

@ancient fractal thanks for your script ๐Ÿ™‚

#

it worked perfect... it seems mednafen is using the bkr extension for memory cards - learned something new

#

funny thing I installed mednaffen yesterday to see something that didn't look right on a game

#

too bad it doesn't support CHD

drifting frigate
#

It's the wild west with emulators for Saturn. I was shocked to learn MAME (at least the version I was using to debug) ONLY supports CHD.

mednaffen is pretty good

I use a Mode for any games I'm not satisfied with on the core, and only used Mame because I needed the debugger. But I'll keep Mednafen in mind. I think the last emulator I used was Yaba which was ...fine.

I'm here to run through the game and test

edgy girder

mortal mist
#

do you have everything up to date, mister main etc ? are you using the redump ? check bin/cue if you are using CHD

ancient surge

I will say that the core does have an issue where sometimes it just fails to boot a game. Not because of bad files or anything, just randomly fails to load and defaults to the BIOS menu.

mortal mist
#

yes it happens sometimes.

edgy girder

Is it an issue that's more common to the latest stable version of the core? I am also using a single 128 MB ram module, which I hear can cause additional problems.

ancient fractal
#

It sounds like a few performance bottlenecks have been fixed or improved lately.. I need to revisit a few more problematic areas of my good old benchmark Magic Knight Rayearth to see if slowdown is reduced.

ancient surge
#

Slowdown can be tricky, because sometimes the slowdown is just a byproduct of the original hardware, while othertimes it's inaccuracies creating a bottleneck.

That's why it's always important to double check.

hardy lodge
ripe valley

No change on Pandemonium concerning the performance.

mortal mist

Ok , for me it starts every time without any problem. Maybe let someone else check.

The region free bios can't boot the game.

mortal mist
#

ok nice find

#

i use free region jap bios

ripe valley
#

On my systems, when I use the region free Hi-Saturn BIOS, even with forcing the region to US on the OSD, the game refuses to boot

#

When adding a cd_bios.rom file from a 'normal' US BIOS, the game boots.

#

Okay, I will close the issue within the next minutes.

#

I must prefer to find that now and document the 'issue' right away rather having to find maybe later with other users.
So we have a trace and a video if future users will ask for the same kind of problem.
Thanks for your help, once more @mortal mist. Always appreciated.

mortal mist
#

I've added your adontation about the bios to the test sheet

ancient surge

Yes I understand. Anyway, it seems like this is only happening to me so far. Reports are that it runs without any major problems. In the Japanese edition (Rockman X4) all bosses have speech sounds. There are micro-differences due to voltage, ram timings, hardware discrepancies that cause issues. Even where you got your disc image from can produce issues as well.

I can't seem to get right/left shoulder buttons working with either the "Digital" or "3D Pad" input choices. I've correctly and successfully mapped all buttons in both menu.rbf and the Saturn core, but none of the "Daytona" games will recognize either L/R shoulder button, so there's no way to accelerate or brake, making the game unplayable. The ZL/ZR triggers are digital (not analog).

The L/R shoulder buttons are also digital, and they are actually just hardwired duplicates of the C and Z buttons, apparently.

The ZL/ZR buttons and dual analog sticks work fine in other cores, and are also detected just fine by the general gamepad button mapping wizard in the menu.rbf OSD. It's only the Saturn core that gives me trouble with the ZL/ZR buttons.

BB n64 cables may "work" but you'll find it's the wrong voltage, Saturn BB cable might "work" for digital controllers but you'll find the buttons are wrong, and it probably won't work with the controllers that use the other modes. Saturn and psx BB cables aren't fully wired iirc they both leave a pin unconnected.

supple vine
#

Maybe I need to test more but I played a ton of N64 and the BB N64 cable works also with cpak loading and saving, etc. How would a cable change the voltage anyways? You mean there are resistors in the cable? I doubt it.

#

Concerning Saturn and PSX I think you are right, the BB cables are not fully connected.

It doesnโ€™t hurt to buy the cables from MisterAddons since they are quite affordable. And they work with both SNAX and Reflex Adapt ๐Ÿ™‚

glad quail
inner token

From my understanding SNAX uses certain hdmi pins for 5v things and others for 3v3. if you use a BB cable with snax and measure the n64 data pin which is pulled up by a resistor I would guess the measurement will be 5v and not 3v3.

It's a travesty that Robby abandoned his fat baby profile icon.

#

I cant seem to find issue with the sprites in Grandia now

ripe valley
#

Neither do I.

naive whale
#

so that seems fixed along with Asuka 120. Not gonna retest NBA Jam. I do not care about that one enough

ripe valley
#

Just the menus aren't aligned for Grandia.

#

I should retest Shining Force III, and see if it still has common random crashes in battle.

ripe valley
#

I was going to ask. ๐Ÿ˜

Just popping in different games to see if there are any issues.

ripe valley
#

I should try Taromaru and/or Darius Gaiden at a later time.
I'm pretty busy today.

#

Is it possible to retest Dragon Master Silk when possible too ? Thanks @ancient surge

naive whale
#

capturing Time Gal now. That didnt work before eh?

ripe valley
#

The game was freezing on a black screen with just some score layer after the first in-game FMV (Time gal being inside the whirl).

naive whale
#

works great now

ripe valley
#

For Ninja Hayate, the game was freezing on a similar screen after Ninja Hayate was swimming hidden with a bamboo straw.

naive whale
#

probably do vid mon or tues since I just did Saturn at 4 pm yesterday

#

def not 4 tomorrrow...sending it out to die against the Superballstravaganza

ripe valley
#

So, you have everything for explaining on your next video what wasn't working before.

ripe valley
#

I was saying that if you add Time Gal on the video, you know how older builds were doing with the game - the game was freezing on some FMV before entering the main game.

Interesting, I actually got through the first battle in Shining Force III without a crash! First time that has ever happened.

#

Not sure yet if it was just pure luck, or that there has actually been a genuine improvement on that front.
