Step 1: Play Shining Force
Step 2: Game turns you into a nerd
Step 3: Robby
Step 4:
Yeah, that lengthy cutscene right before the first battle is brutal. Thankfully you can save right before that cutscene, so you don't need to go through the entire begining every time, but yeah I've seen that one cutscene so many times.
I couldn't survive!
Ooh fun
Pocket is with me ๐คช
I hope the Powerslave/Exhumed textures get fixed!
Is that good on the Saturn?
I see no change for this
Itโs nice we get exact games it should fix. Makes it a LOT easier
Oh yeah, I was just wishful thinking for the future
Step 3: ??? = having fun
And itโs live
CROC MENTIONED ๐ ๐
it's ... as good as anywhere else
If anyone finds anything not on the notes list LMK. Will capture later this afternoon
But not for 4 today
Yea!
https://croc.fandom.com/wiki/Croc:_Legend_of_the_Gobbos_Version_Differences
- The Sega Saturn port has the darkest colours.
- The Sega Saturn port has the lowest resolution.
- Croc is the tallest in the Sega Saturn version and the smallest in the Sony PSX version.

he's taller so you can see him better, it's a benefit
darker colors are cooler, brighter colors are for babies
Canโt argue facts
lower resolution = higher framerate, that's how it works isn't it
hells yeah ๐
Iโm actually going to play Croc on the Saturn core lol. I need more 3D platformers! That penguin game is pretty cool though.
there is a cartoon about the sega saturn... and the fanboy uncle.... but there isn't one about the PSX!
Saturn wins again!!
There isn't a planet called PSX... Saturn wins again!!
I you like it put a ring on it.... Saturn wins again!!
@burnt matrix shall I continue?
- make Saturn jokes
- ???????
- proffit
I played on my old gateway growing up
played recently on saturn a month or so back but when deciding to watch the intro - it would always glitch out so I held off
Are there no pins on this channel?
I'm too lazy to type mister saturn github into google
New builds generally show up here:#unstable-nightlies
Oh I was mostly interested in seeing the issue tracker but thanks ๐I'm just being lazy like i said ๐
I closed 5 issues or regressions today, that's great.
But, I have some troubles with Assault Suits Leynos 2 with the last core version (20240202) now.
The game tends to freeze after 4/5 seconds of gameplay on stage 1.
Could someone test on their system and report if a regression is there (or not) ?
Thanks.
Croc on the Saturn is pretty cool!
Croc has random wireframe lines on the walls that appear based on oblique camera angles
I see sometimes the canceled Yoshi game for Nintendo.
The slowdown I posted about yesterday is gone
I'm experiencing the same freeze here on my MiSTer too
Was Assault Suit Laynos 2 one of those "problematic" games that always caused issues?
I'm not sure, but I feel like it used to get further into the game than it does now On the previous version of the core Assault Suit Leynos 2 doesn't crash but it does quickly get a lot of graphical corruption over the screen.
The graphics errors go away if you go press start to go into the menu but it eventually comes back
Thanks for the confirmation.
Issue opened, with a small mention about your confirmation.
That's just for remembering with whom I discussed about the issue.
Nice cotton 2 fixed
Any other issues in sotn or is it perfect now?
Are audio issues with crappy ram fixed yet?
Nope
the shining force 3 bug still persists right?
yes
ok
have a few days off ๐
will keep an eye, if new core drops I'll test some
but not up to date really, with what games have game breaking issues
other than shining force 3
you can always check on github ๐
ahh srg320's own repo right?
mister saturn
alright
it should be possible to transfer a backup ram save from an software emulator to the core right?
yes
Depending on the emulator some byte swizzling may be necessary. At least thatโs the case for Mednafen.
I wrote a simple converter script.. might just as well put up a gist: https://gist.github.com/Optiroc/20135302cd2b3692f9b0f41d59be4a8e
Convert Sega Saturn save files between MiSTer and Mednafen format - ss-sav-conv.py
nice!
can someone make a save state for Castlevania SotN with the Crissaegrim and duplicator?
at the start of the game?
I lost my save while playing and testing
I just want to run through the castles
can I include this script on the Saturn FAQ?
the code could be written a bit shorter also
Sure ๐
Yeah, you can always write shorter python. In cases like this I just take the last similar script I wrote and change some stuff around and stop when it works.
๐
I've added (and modified) some other issues today, for reflecting the current state.
Nothing new here, just writing down some issues that weren't reported on the log.
Dead or Alive has slowdowns , but in general it does not work for me as you described in the issue
There are slowdowns, but it doesn't work worse from fight to fight.
On my system, the first stage is okay, the second have some bearable slowdowns, and after the third one each move will slow down like half speed.
I have finished all the fights , some e.g. fight 6 was without any slowdown
This is the same for me. Leifang's stage slows down. If there are two ninjas with petals/leaves it slows down. But the fight with Zach at the beginning is almost always full speed apart from edge cases like barrier falls. So for me it does work differently from fight to fight. But it's definitely much better than it used to be, overall. Still, I'm confirming I see what you see on multiple MiSTers.
Wish I'd seen the SF3 GitHub issue sooner. I just dropped a savegame in the the thread for the USA version that he can quickly test with. I suspended the game when it was Grace's turn so he should just be able to load the save, cast Heal, and watch it freeze.
I'm sure the people posting in the thread mean well but linking a video does nothing to help. He needs to reproduce it himself. The save game should help with that.
@ancient fractal thanks for your script ๐
it worked perfect... it seems mednafen is using the bkr extension for memory cards - learned something new
funny thing I installed mednaffen yesterday to see something that didn't look right on a game
too bad it doesn't support CHD
It's the wild west with emulators for Saturn. I was shocked to learn MAME (at least the version I was using to debug) ONLY supports CHD.
mednaffen is pretty good
too bad that they didn't implement a console like openMSX has
one window to control everything from instead of multiple windows
i could not defeat Maria in Sotn for some reason
gave my self level 99
I use a Mode for any games I'm not satisfied with on the core, and only used Mame because I needed the debugger. But I'll keep Mednafen in mind. I think the last emulator I used was Yaba which was ...fine.
I'm here to run through the game and test
The action replay on Sat with Mode is weird, but it works. I just almost never use it for anything but as a memory card.
Throw the book at h...no. That's dumb. Good luck!
hehehehe ๐
yup
don't lose your head
Crissie Get ๐
took 10 mins of chopping heads
Smhoo!!
for those who want to just run around and chop stuff
If I had known it was possible to make a save during a battle, I would have done it too ๐
I'm not familiar with this game , thanks for sending the save
Yeah hit B to bring up the cursor, scroll to an empty spot and press A. Thatโll bring up a menu that includes suspend option.
So even though I switched to using a region free Hi-Saturn bios, I'm still getting the "Drive door open" error no matter what game I try to run. What would be the best way to contact srg320 about it?
you are, as of now, the only person with such a problem
I have seen other people discuss the issue online, so I am not the only one.
ok then i will ask for the source , i will be glad to check.
do you have everything up to date, mister main etc ? are you using the redump ? check bin/cue if you are using CHD
I will say that the core does have an issue where sometimes it just fails to boot a game. Not because of bad files or anything, just randomly fails to load and defaults to the BIOS menu.
yes it happens sometimes.
Is it an issue that's more common to the latest stable version of the core? I am also using a single 128 MB ram module, which I hear can cause additional problems.
if you are using 2.9/3.0 there should be no problem
there is a problem with the sound in version 2.4/2.5
Unless you are using a ram with 4 chips
Mednafen is my go to when Iโm not on MiSTer or real hardware
Is the RAM version number listed on the module itself? My MiSTer was a preconfigured unit I bought from ultimatemister.com back in August 2021. I know for a fact it has a 128 meg RAM module, but I am not sure which version.
its listed on the chip or should be
Awesome, I'll take off the case and have a look
there it is below the text this side faces outawrds
if they use the standard design it will be visible there on the silk scvreen
Ultimate Mister should only be selling the 2 chip so you should be fine there
Dang, Nat going all out with a little flair on the headers there.
just a red hot brand !
Pretty sick tho, leaves a good impression.
๐ฅ
Poor guy has probably lost alot of sales due to fear from the Europeans about taxes
I have not. The last unstable core I tried was around 19 January or so
Turns out that's the version of RAM I have lol
It's two chip too
Every time I see this I think they should replace the text
yes it always reminds me of a Claymore Mine
and always amused me they have to squadie proof the mines
well....(I know it wasn't in the movie and was an outtake but still....)
Oh phew itโs not me or the mgl files I use to launch games
Yeah, I often have trouble getting certain games in particular to launch. Nights into Dreams being the primary example. I can get it to launch, but it often takes like 4 tries before it'll actually launch.
just like its sales huehuehuehue
Update Saturn :
SCU: fix DSP DMA to DSP program RAM (Shining Force III)
SMPC: add delay to abort INTBACK command (Terry Pratchett's Discworld, Primal Rage)
It's happening!

Shining Force III fix is finally happening! @sudden tusk
I gotta order me a Saturn Light Gun, just in case...
No more no heals runs lol
The game would sometimes crash on me even without healing during battle. Healing was consistent though.
Bummer ,
This update is for Wisconsin!
#1046941029296779344 message
srg320 was recently asking about the crashes in the game on github as well. So we know he was working on it.
I see ! This is good news
I gotta travel a bit for the next few days but as soon as I get home Iโm on that shizzzz
Oh oh nothing about shinning force on the notes
I'll test it now. Single ram just dropped as well.
Update Saturn :
SCU: fix DSP DMA to DSP program RAM (Shining Force III)
SMPC: add delay to abort INTBACK command (Terry Pratchett's Discworld, Primal Rage)
Full note is on github
so Shining Force III is good now?
hot damn....gonna have to cut into my video I had for tomorrow
Testing it now.
do you have a save you can slide me?
Just gotta get through that cutscene first...
Crappy ram fix?
nope!
I'll grab it after I confirm the game is fixed.
see you next week
appreciate it. Finishing Akuma shit here for 4 then I will move to Saturn
Make sure you go to the church and save before the first battle .. that way you wonโt have to sit through the cutscene
That's where my save is.
primal rage works again ๐
no shit!
I made a save right at the start of the battle (didn't know you could do this until recently).
Just added new core to MiSTer. If you have that save @pearl harbor that would be epic
So no need to go through the cutscene at all now.
amazing
Just checking that the save does indeed start it there first real quick.
appreciate it!
if no one finds a new bug then yes ๐
At least so far! It didn't crash when I cast the healing spell, and before it was a consistent crash.
I read SF3 as street fighter 3
capturing Shining Force III now
Uh oh, looks like it's not perfect yet. Just crashed during a fire spell for me. I cast it before that without a crash, so it's not consistent.
oh no....well thats still an improvement!
Definitely an improvement. But not comfortable in starting a play through yet.
ill be sure to mention that
I always say "just because X works doesn't mean you wont find a bug ten hours in and be stuck"
wow @pearl harbor your save....very inappropriate name
Dong Johnson...shame on you
hey healing with medical herb didnt crash things!
it is herb right? lol been so long
ok well I also did heal so...full coverage haha
haha damn I froze it too on an attack
The fix was right on Mednafen, srg320 applies the same type on the core.
Issues closed.
it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside watching the core progress like this
what a day. Saturnday, Akuma day...best Sunday in 2024 so far!
Wonder what the criteria will be for an actual release. Lots of fixes over the past few weeks.
The healing spell! Magic! Not the herb!
Isn't it actually released now?
Sorry, I was out shopping for awhile.
like update_all pulls it doesn't it
Yes, the Saturn core is released. Just keep in mind that released does not equel finished.
Yes, but none of the recent fixes. I suspect he is going to wait to have it much more polished before a second release
I did both!
That's good. I assume it worked in both cases. Did you have any crashes?
yep. Straight combat
attacked...froze
Yeah, it did that sometimes before the fix as well. The healing spell was a consistent crash every time, but normal combat would occasionally crash too.
getting closer
Sadly looks like whatever is affected by having slower SDRAM is yet to be addressed (if that's even possible), Sega Rally still having sound issues on my setup.
Get back on the andromeda.
I notice that soundtrack volume is low in Daytona usa during intro.
In Sega Rally it seems like the soundtrack don't start at the beginning (i dont hear the first second)
Quiet audio is probably the most common issue with the core currently.
Die Hard Arcade and Guardian Heroes on the cocktail build is pretty sweet
I still need to make the matching control panel.
With the rest of that panel
3form's Chroma resin panels offer incredible clarity and light transmission. To learn more about Chroma, visit 3-form.com today.
yeah, got through alot more of it, due to the stick. been messing with it on my other system with a cheap switch pro controller
@delicate mantle Goon spi racist?
Goon conspiracist
Well the nick is only 1 letter away from being 100% legit there
I've got a whole crazy conspiracy wall on how Lowtax did 9/11, while on mangosteen
Lots of red yarn everywhere
So what's our favorite multi region bios, if I were to look for one
None of them are the wrong answer, but I personally use the Hi-Saturn 1.01 one just because I like the introduction animation.
Thanks! I'll give it a look
I use jap 1.01
I've tested rapidly (8/10 mins) around 30 more games today and only found 2 (rather obvious) issues.
That's quite encouraging.
And I don't want to test those Wizardry and Winning Post games again. ๐ฑ
At least it's not mahjong.
It sounds like a few performance bottlenecks have been fixed or improved lately.. I need to revisit a few more problematic areas of my good old benchmark Magic Knight Rayearth to see if slowdown is reduced.
Slowdown can be tricky, because sometimes the slowdown is just a byproduct of the original hardware, while othertimes it's inaccuracies creating a bottleneck.
That's why it's always important to double check.
This has the best intro sequence, that's why I chose it as well. ๐
No change on Pandemonium concerning the performance.
For the texture problem, when I test the game on a real Saturn, that's a Gouraud shading one for sure.
Hi-Saturn enters the chat..

@ripe valley Warcraft II works fine here , https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/Saturn_MiSTer/issues/112
maybe check another image of the game
I've tested a fresh new dump from the disc, a copy from the Net & my CHD file.
All the same, it stays on the SEGA Boot screen with a USA version of the game.
And on my two systems (Single 3.0 and Dual 2.9).
Ok , for me it starts every time without any problem. Maybe let someone else check.
On my systems, when I use the region free Hi-Saturn BIOS, even with forcing the region to US on the OSD, the game refuses to boot
When adding a cd_bios.rom file from a 'normal' US BIOS, the game boots.
Okay, I will close the issue within the next minutes.
I must prefer to find that now and document the 'issue' right away rather having to find maybe later with other users.
So we have a trace and a video if future users will ask for the same kind of problem.
Thanks for your help, once more @mortal mist. Always appreciated.
I've added your adontation about the bios to the test sheet
So is it necessarily the region free hacked BIOS or the Hi-Saturn BIOS in general?
I've not tried the regular Hi-Saturn BIOS, sorry.
I will try to note down to retest with that configuration when a new core version will drop.
Do you have version 1.01 or version 1.02 ?
for me with regural hi saturn bios Warcraft II works with version 1.02 , but does not work with version 1.01
yeah, so it doesn't work with the regular version either
Mega Man X4 continues to crash the same way on the new SS core, randomly during any boss' dialogue. I decided to open it to clean it and see if it solves the problem.
hope you at least bought it a drink first
Itโs a WIP core, crashes are bound to happen.
Yes I understand. Anyway, it seems like this is only happening to me so far. Reports are that it runs without any major problems. In the Japanese edition (Rockman X4) all bosses have speech sounds. In the USA, this only occurs in the last bosses, who are the only ones that have speech sounds. It's funny that sometimes I can finish the game without any major problems. I left a save in refights to test in Japan.
There are micro-differences due to voltage, ram timings, hardware discrepancies that cause issues. Even where you got your disc image from can produce issues as well.
Sorry if itโs frustrating to have a game not work for you but it works for others. That happens to everyone if itโs any consolation. Once the core has ironed out most bugs then work can begin on stability.
I have the dumps of my own original SS games. And it still doesn't work correctly.
Have you tried the recommended ones in the pins?
Redump
I'll try them and report back if it works.
Hope that works for you, brother. ๐ป
Thanks man.๐ค
๐ฅณ
Everything was going well... untilโฆ
game went very well until refights cyber Peacock
I just tried X4 and it crashed after the first stage
Same Issue with the bosses?
I didn't get to a boss
Like the opening area where you meet some red robot dude you flash away then it kicked me back to the bios
lol
magma dragoon
This problem I have with the x4 may be fixed in future updates, for now. There's nothing I can do that won't cause the game to crash at some point random with the bosses.
Bummer
I'm playing X4 crash randomizer on Sega Saturn ๐คฃ
https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/Saturn_MiSTer/issues/87
It's been two weeks since I reported him there
At least we still have the PS1 version of X4!
I forget if the Saturn version has any exclusive content. I know Mega Man 8 definitely does.
bros i just played nights with the 3d control pad
that was genuinely incredible
i didnt expect to have that much fun, but the dreamlike visuals and strange music really captured me
Alien Trilogy works very well on the core
for me it's better than psx version
better contrast on saturn version
and it seems to me that the game runs smoother ๐
It's a scifi game, so you'd expect it to be best on saturn.
It should be interesting to add a savefile to the Final Weapon stage on the issue report.
So that other testers and srg320 could test it more efficiently later.
Thanks.
Right. I put the save here, where did I report the problem? @ripe valley
I updated with 3 types of MMX4 (RX4) saves:
Mega Man X4 (USA)
Rockman X4 (Japan) (3M)
Rockman X4 (JP)
Did the pins go missing? Was going to share vampiers FAQ with a redditor..
nope, still there
settings
pinned
why is that , then you have to ask discord ๐
looks ok on browser

just saw. Thats fun
Oh this might finally fix the glitched shadows in Asuka 120%
srg320 is very active, even with issues opened yesterday night.
By the way, with these SEGA Saturn changes, is there any SEGA 32X changes to go with it?
EDIT : Maybe with the SH7604 change.
Awwww snap hell yeah new build!
Good stuff ๐
ooh game updates too eh?
Yep, all Dreamcast games work on the core now ๐
damn British lies
We are in mourning
Teaching him what retro games are like, he's doing well.

Starting him off on x4 is a choice
Fixed.
Nice, are the Grandia FMVs finally fixed?
ok for now the change when it comes to multidisc is about naming. Now the save has the name of the game, not the disc with the number for example (Panzer Dragoon Saga), so that each disc sees the save
still need an option to open and close the lid
What happun?
Their king has cancer
Waited his whole life to be king and dude gets sick like year 1
we have the hot spare standing by
Could someone test "Tenchi wo Kurau II - Sekiheki no Tatakai" ?
Just to be sure about the game does load on the core or not.
Thanks.
Shieeeett .. but he just became king ..
Who is next in succession ?
Is that the one married to that actress ?
no thats Harry his younger brother
Oh ok harry said fuck it since he knew he was never gonna be king ..
before he gets in all 3 of Williams Children would need to have Gardening accidents
Charles is not dying
he has had early Cancer detected
He will get the best possible Medical Care
shame
no matter what you think of Royalty wishing Cancer on someone is not cool
oh I don't wish cancer on him, he already has it
I just wish he had access to the same healthcare as the proletariat
He is wealthy, Any wealthy person always has better access
its the way the world works
until the next french revolution happens, anyways
Never going to happen
I don't know, shit's been getting pretty bad
I only care about my Brohleteriats!
Tried Grandia, and the FMVs are indeed finally fixed!
battles works fine, fixed some time ago
oh awesome
I did have to go and update the name of my save file in Grandia with today's update. The save had "(Disk 1)" in its file name, and I had to remove that part of the name. Easy enough fix.
will check in a few moments
yeah , same for Panzer Saga ๐
easy fix hehe
Might be worth making a pinned message about the save file name update for multi disc games. I have a feeling we are in for some people asking about what happened to their saves in the near future. ๐
All good ๐
Just darn busy with work ๐
Same here bro .. lifeโs been nuts these past few months ..
Glad the shadows are fixed, but it still has issues with the sound randomly cutting out.
I have two 128MB 2.9 RAM modules, so RAM hasn't been an issue with me.
Found another issue. The sprites scaling on this character/course select screen is broken. I think is a regression since I remember this looking normal in an older build.
oh no , Grandia is broken again !
I've compiled a new version and shared it on #1096614378968727652
and there is something wrong with sprites when running
with npsc too
menu is broken too
I let you do the issue report as I'm not available at the moment and you will be faster writing it.
yeah, i'm working on it ๐
Core 20240204 is okay.
So it's a regression then.
I think this might be related to the same sprite scaling problems impacting Puyo Puyo Sun too. There might be other games sharing this same issue if that is the case.
Good luck on your tests and reports.
Just as I thought, this problem is plaguing other games too.
Grandia looks fine too on 20240204
Not that there aren't other issues with Sega Rally as well, but even the countdown at the start of the first stage has scaling issues with the numbers.
THERE WAS A NEW BUILD
I thought he just updated the readme and it auto compiled a build
Hoping to get Thunder Force working without slowdowns soon ๐ค
So will this build get pulled by update_all
It would be cool if it could get a downloader option like the n64 core
NBA Jam - TE is affected by the regression too, on the players sprites.
it's in update_all already though right? Or do these nightlies not make it in? I guess that's what I'm asking
They don't. They're still considered unstable builds. The update and update all downloaders never grab from unstable-nightlies.
thanks ๐
For n64 you can add a line to your downloader.ini to grab the nightlies though.
Kingdom Grandprix translation runs beautifully on the core. Iโm very happy because the arcade one doesnโt work for me, lol.
[n64_dev]
db_url = https://raw.githubusercontent.com/RobertPeip/Mister64/db/db.json.zip```
yes. I wish you could do the same for Saturn. Unless I missed that part?
heโs got a script
It replaces all your cores with MSX core variants but you do get the latest Saturn unstable nightly. You win some, you lose some.
@burnt matrix for the love of god - stay factual please
don't tarnish my unblemished reputation
I'm serious dude - just stop it before I have to come there and shove an MSX up your nostrils
@hybrid lichen https://vampier.net/Saturn/
Hey free MSX
Interesting fact- turbo r is an anagram of Saturn
Hey what do I do to get a nostril MSX
Thanks for the great work by the way. Msx out of 10.
You can get a MSX and you probably have a nostril already, so you can do it on your own.
I can't seem to get right/left shoulder buttons working with either the "Digital" or "3D Pad" input choices. I've correctly and successfully mapped all buttons in both menu.rbf and the Saturn core, but none of the "Daytona" games will recognize either L/R shoulder button, so there's no way to accelerate or brake, making the game unplayable. Am I missing something?
What controller are you using ?
Correct. If I switch to "Digital" input, the L/R buttons do not change views either.
I'm using the RetroBit dual analog Saturn wireless controller.
ahh there are some problems with this pad
I'm mapping the ZL/ZR triggers, because I know about the L/R shoulder buttons issue.
So that's not in play here.
When I'm home I'll check , but I don't recall this problem.
unfortunately I have no experience with this dual analog pad
thanks
The ZL/ZR triggers are digital (not analog).
The L/R shoulder buttons are also digital, and they are actually just hardwired duplicates of the C and Z buttons, apparently.
The ZL/ZR buttons and dual analog sticks work fine in other cores, and are also detected just fine by the general gamepad button mapping wizard in the menu.rbf OSD. It's only the Saturn core that gives me trouble with the ZL/ZR buttons.
@craggy horizon have you tried with another controller?
#share-media message
i posted a link to a podcast episode fellow saturn fans will likely enjoy
It's a little bit like a pandemonium reviews episode.
Daytona - L/R works fine here
m30 8bitdo pad
black screen for me after Sega logo (20240206)
but works with core 20240204
regression ๐
you broke it

A lot of regressions going on...
yes , the last core messed up a bit ๐
but it's the way to go
There are super testers here who catch bugs
Issue opened for Tenchi wo Kurau II.
Like I already said, it's better to catch the issues and regressions very early.
So srg320 could seek more rapidly where the code have a problem.
a way to do this is - core version where it worked / core version where it didn't work and report the exact point where is broke
That's I try to do when it's possible, even pinpoint the exact commit.
I'm assuming srg is at least aware of the problems with sprite scaling going on.
anyone successfully using the Saturn core on an ironclad build?
I ask because, apparently, the RAM supplied in the ironclad kits is 4chip RAM, and I hear (in the help section) that this is no longer compatible with the Saturn core
It was never in spec for MiSTer, just one vendor trying to use cheaper chips.
Unfortunately, the Saturn will not work well with the 4c
thanks, very interesting, I'll need some new RAM then
it's 4
then forget saturn for the time being
or replace the Ram if possible with the official design
I'll use it on my second standard system. and, for my ironclad build, swap the RAM for a new regular version (but not sure if regular will fit in an ironclad)
Thats the problem with Non standard designs
yep ๐คฆ
you get locked into their own special ways
You could probably easily figure out by comparing dimensions of either
At least to see if they match
I am using the Saturn core on an ironclad build... except I changed the RAM for 2 chip as the ironclad is thankfully compatible with both types, core did not work properly for me with 4 chip at all
thank you for the feedback
I swapped the 4chip out for the 2chip from my second build
Saturn core now works
That is awesome! Sorry you had to deal with that but things happen. Glad it got sorted for everyone.
Interesting, I haven't had any issues with that controller in the Saturn core. I'll have to check it again with the latest version of the core.
Thanks. I haven't yet tested other controllers. This is something I just happened to run across late last night. I can test other controllers tonight.
I forgot the 8bitdo M30 has digital shoulder buttons. I'll try that one and the SN30 Pro (digital trigger) tonight. I suppose I should also try something with analog triggers (like an Xbone controller), since the Saturn 3D pad apparently had analog triggers.
sadly the duke is the only replacement controller I can think of that has everything in place
Analog triggers won't work unless you're using SNAC
There's been requests to get analog trigger functionality added to MiSTer for the Saturn and a few arcade cores.
I have an actual saturn, I would live some new options for a 3d controllerโฆpreferably that worked in all three analog modes: 3d, arcade racer, mission stick
and when/if the mister ever supported analog triggers, there you go
does that new retro-bit saturn pro controller have analog triggers?
I know it's got 2 sticks, so it's halfway there
@mental folio i'm looking at this controller too, seems there is no analog trigger at all
would love these, as Outrun at 60fps on Saturn is allllllmost the best version of Outrun (even better than the arcade, which runs at 30fps). But the lack of analogue control kills it..
I'm playing it with analog steering right now
I think he means analog accelerate brake, which the Outrun on Saturn supports. I had no idea!
yep
Iโve got a SNAX + 3D control pad. Iโll have to check it out.
here's hoping that support gets added for general controllers
Damn thatโs awesome!
you can just about make the car crawl at 2-3mph
neat
just beat all my prior records with snac 3d controller
I'm curious to know if that works for you. I just tried my SNAX with the 3D pad and I couldn't for the life of me get it to work. The controller is brand new (used), just arrived today and I don't have an original Saturn to test with, unfortunately, so not sure if it's the pad or something to do with the SNAX adapter not working with blue1's latest SNAC core. ๐ฆ
dang makes me wish I could use my Dual Sense, I don't have no fancy SNAC and 3D controller
Pull your Saturn cable out slightly and try again.
Saturn cable to SNAC connector. The initial SNAC cables have that flaw.
quick and dirty assembly test
Will give it a try, thanks for the info ๐
Hope thatโs the issue!
The new ones are
he means pull the saturn connector out of the saturn adapter slightly. it's probably that
beginners sometime don't know to turn snac on in OSD
was just playing with your core btw, wonderful 1st impression
saw that, Outrun must be easier with analog gas?
It's enabled on OSD, set to 3D pad, port 1. I pulled out the connector a bit, and fiddled with it various times. It never works, sadly... might have a dud 3D pad. ๐ฆ
No joy, but thanks anyway ๐ญ
maybe just try a basic snac adapter, I've no experience with the snax fork but they might just not be supported right at this moment
also are you using a voltage shifter?
"Sega Saturn Cable" that I bought from Ultimatemister, supposed to work with both Snac and BlisSTer
but the SNAX (SNAC V2) is from pork
that's what I'm thinking... need to look around for a regular SNAC adapter in Europe
Voltage shifter?
I don't have any others to test, sadly
it's fine if you're not, you don't need one for this controller
it's more a nes thing
it's the cable. only ones from porkchop work with the snax or reflex.
didn't even know a voltage shifter was a thing, lol
oh damn...
Thanks for the info
snax does the voltage thing
getting the adapter was easy, because a friend came over from the US... but ordering the Saturn cable to Europe... ughh...
most BB cables work with both bliss and snax but there are few that don't(saturn, psx,n64 iirc)
I'll make you one, it'll be cheap
I was only gonna sell them for ยฃ10 including postage

No
Neither ZL/ZR triggers nor L/R shoulder buttons on my 8bitdo SN30 Pro controller work for the Saturn's L/R triggers in "3D Pad" mode, either. Is that because none of those are analog triggers?
I'm sure retrobit will get it right 3rd time around
Even when the input type is set to "Digital", the correctly-mapped digital L/R or ZL/ZR buttons on my 8bitdo SN30 Pro still do not work as digital pad L/R shoulder buttons. It appears to me that L/R buttons simply do not work at all with the latest Saturn unstable core.
Scratch that. It works. It was an in-game button mapping issue.
so dual analog retrobit also works ok ?
Yes but not as a 3D Pad.
Iโm glad you figured it out. Iโve never had mapping issues with the MiSTer so that wouldโve been a real surprise to see.
Only as a Digital pad.
Maybe check your mapping again?
Oh itโs Retrobit, yah they have issues
Iโll check my setup later, I have an SN30 Pro too.
I'm pretty sure that retobit fixed the analog mode on the latest firmware update. It shouldwork via snac.
I don't own one so I can not test.
The BB N64 cable works with SNAX, I have been using it for a while. The BB Saturn cable works for digital controllers, I havenโt tried 3D controllers yet. The BB PSX cable doesnโt work with SNAX.
BB n64 cables may "work" but you'll find it's the wrong voltage, Saturn BB cable might "work" for digital controllers but you'll find the buttons are wrong, and it probably won't work with the controllers that use the other modes. Saturn and psx BB cables aren't fully wired iirc they both leave a pin unconnected.
Maybe I need to test more but I played a ton of N64 and the BB N64 cable works also with cpak loading and saving, etc. How would a cable change the voltage anyways? You mean there are resistors in the cable? I doubt it.
Concerning Saturn and PSX I think you are right, the BB cables are not fully connected.
It doesnโt hurt to buy the cables from MisterAddons since they are quite affordable. And they work with both SNAX and Reflex Adapt ๐
whuuuuut? I thought analogue triggers weren't implemented in Saturn core yet?
From my understanding SNAX uses certain hdmi pins for 5v things and others for 3v3. if you use a BB cable with snax and measure the n64 data pin which is pulled up by a resistor I would guess the measurement will be 5v and not 3v3.
I of course could be wrong, but don't have a reason to lie. I don't really care who you buy whatever from until I have to answer questions or solve peoples problems.
right now mister doesn't accept analog buttons only sticks using usb, I think he was using SNAC which as of right now is the only way to use the 3d controller with saturn and get the analog buttons since it bypasses the usb
Huh, you are right. Saturn buttons are wrong with the BB Saturn cable. So I will buy the MisterAddons cables. I will buy the N64 ones as well just to be safe.
Oh there are PC Engine SNAC cables now as well, awesome.
Thanks for verifying the saturn cables. I believe there are PCE BB cables already that should be compatible but don't quote me on that since I never personally tested them.
What exactly do you mean by "fixed the analog mode"?
For SNAC, are you saying I'd get a Saturn SNAC adapter and then plug a wireless Saturn dongle into it?
What are "BB cables"?
BlissBox
Analog mode for saturn was broken with the retail firmware from retrobit. Analog stick works, analog trigger does not.
This is from what I've seen from reports. I don't have this controller.
Retrobit got the analog trigger working with a firmware update.
This
Are newer SNAC cables better? Wouldn't hate to have one I didn't need to wiggle every time
the newest cable from misterAddons I purchased was better
but I still needed a little wiggle
Haven't had any issues on my end with the new ones from misterAddons either. No wiggle wiggle needed on my end.
could be just a dirty edge connector on 20 year old HW purchased from Ebay that needed alot of IPA to clean before I would even let it in the house
Haha yeah thatโs always a problem, but for sure the SNAC connector I have is a lot less likely to work without copious wiggling than the ports in my actual Saturn
Same issue with extension cables Iโve sourced to try and build a daemonbite, I guess whatever controller port mould was floating around is not so great
the non-pro doesnt work
Slightly offtopic from the core, but does anyone know the controller polling rate of the Saturn?
Most OG hardware polls at 16ms
Once per frame
Iโm not sure about saturn but it should be the same
Yeah, I guess it is going to have some variability based on implementation, but I have seen apocryphal statements that the Saturn in general has higher input delays.
in most cases for other systems it's up to the software, but real saturn is once per frame as far as I know.
ahhhh, ok, SNAC here I come ๐
What controller do you folks recommend for Saturn SNAC? Something I can pickup on Amazon USA would be useful, as they ship to Thailand.
OEM 3D Pad and the JP Cool Pad imo
The mission stick is cool too if you like flying games
And Iโm a fan of the steering wheel
the analog buttons thing might get implemented eventually. Andy put a request in and Sorg said he'd think about it.
hopefully! it would have a few really useful applications
the OEM seems like it'll be best for analogue steering, as the Cool Pad doesn't have an analogue stick (but looks awesome)
Is there another controller I could use, that has an analogue stick, and can be connected over SNAC?
Thatโs it, makes it easy haha
this one looks like a decent option, what do you think?

Is that the one that has the fake analog stick
Ugh yea, just reading so in the Amazon reviews.
Also no analog triggers
Yeah double offensive
But itโs a good point, didnโt even think of third party options
So there's only the OEM serial controller for analogue stick on Saturn :/
looks like the OEM ๐
blueretro receiver or oem controller, dont buy retrobit controller doesnt work
Seems like anything Retrobit when it comes to the Saturn is awful. I bought a Retrobit cool pad and it had connection problems.
Iโm testing out @unkempt kelpโ Reflex Ctrl Saturn conversion kit. I replaced the guts of my Retrobit cool pad with it. It turned that waste of $20 into my favorite multi-purpose retro controller to use on my PC and MiSTer.
Ohhhh yeah! I need to get that. Damn I havenโt even hooked it up to my Switch either. I love this thing, thank you.
sorry not trying to sell anyone on it, but the conversation about RetroBit not working reminded me of my purchase and it had a happy ending
whoa, I guess I can use my dualsense with this. perfect ๐
the saturn conversion kit not good?
Nah itโs awesome.
I was saying the Retrobit cool pad I had wasnโt good. Maybe a manufacturing defect? Not sure but I had problems using it with the MiSTer and Saturn.
oh ok gotcha i read it wrong
but I replaced it with the Saturn controller conversion kit from MisterAddons called โReflex CTRLโ and itโs been my go to retro controller for multiple devices. The RetroBit shell + buttons are awesome so it feels really nice
i was thinking picking one up when its available
I think itโs worth it imo. My one complaint is the Saturn controller lacks a select button. It would be the perfect retro controller if it had one!
i waste money on retrobit while ago
The controller itself doesn't have analog triggers.
I'm using the USB dongle. It has had no issues with the analog sticks.
for a second there i thought that was a really convincing "exploded look" sticker kit ๐
did a little trimming to the back cover of the Saturn connector and super glued it to give the socket a bit more strength
otherwise the plastic connector could be pulled off from pins
this was with just a little pull
as you can guess the plastic part should be way back
From what I've seen, the problem was on saturn mode. It does not report the "triggers" correctly.
Yeah, they're designed to be held in by a solid case enclosure. Most older pin-style connectors have the same weakness; usually little barbs on the pins mean the shroud can only move partially not come completely off unless you really try hard.
Thus the big shoulder surround molding
Which is all fine until you use bare boards ๐
srg320 is apparently searching (by probing) some more informations on the VDP1 drawing sprites commands and VRAM accesses (read commands and DMA) these last days.
He posted some VDP1 logs yesterday.
yes , I saw the measurements yesterday
Oh he's trying to figure out why the latest build broke things?
That should be part of it.
Buying anything that isn't OEM when it comes to retro controllers is risky business. Most third party controllers at the time sucked. Some where good, but most sucked. That kind of holds true today still. pretty much 8bitdo and retrobit making some of those lists. Even those companies put out bad controllers too.
plus you run the chance it will be out of spec and won't work certain adapters.
How is it??
Love the snes one
Itโs better! It includes a little usb port to allow for a wireless Brook adapter to use it on the PS4/PS5
Smh
I know this is probably not a priority
But flip screen would be nice ๐ญ
(Shienryu)
Lmao oops
yeah EVERY game rotates that way
smh
ETAT
lmao
if there's no flip, this core is dead to my current setup
every shmup is really weird downwell clone
I think my display rotates the same direction, so same boat.
Workaround: full body inversion table
As an added bonus, you can also sleep like BatMan.
based
whose BatMan
do you mean "Batman"
oh no you must mean Bat Man
(also available on mister)
You can see that the "B" and "M" are clearly capitalized.
yeah great point thats on me
its so clear
especially in the BAtMaN bEgINs logo
Batman Begins may be my fave bat movie
I was quite enamoured with the look of The Batman, and I didnโt hate Pattinsonโs Batman, although I wasnโt a huge fan of how they wrote his Bruce Wayne
Too much tortured eccentric, not enough billionaire playboy
you forgot one
BatmaN
I took it at as a Year One kind of situation. Where he's not a good detective and doesn't understand the importance of being the playboy as a mask yet.
The Nolan Batman movies have him realize that after he's at it a while.
They're all still borrowing from Frank Miller even in the 2020's
๐คฃ
They could still do a proper Dark Knight live action movie
With the Mutants and whatnot
So contrary to the N64 situation, there are a whole lot of Saturn games. Also they take way more space. Are we dividing and conquering when it comes to testing?
No need, just need to play the SotN Saturn port over and over
RetroFi 4-Players Sega Saturn module is alive!
It's compatible with both regular and 3D pads! ๐
Congrats, looks great! I also love the bird logo.
WARNING
Update incoming.
I was checking something else and saw the updates being pushed.
Pretty big update, especially on the DDRAM controller and the SCU.
We will need to check some possible (other) regressions.
And see if the v2.4/v2.5 RAM are working better now.
Crappy RAM fix incoming ๐
Neevvaaa
@ripe valley is pretty good at knowing when an update is about to happenโฆ
Totally by chance, I was searching for an update on another core.
When will be it available with update saturn script?
โtotally by chance, I just finished updating the core to my GitHub because I am secretly srg320โ
Will appear in unstable nightlies
If only I knew 1% of the knowledge of srg320 on Verilog and FPGA programmation...
Or even when Andy D could explain some issues.
Ressources reduction was almost necessary as the last versions of the core were at 99% of the whole LUT usage.
how did you reduce it?
Something that needs to be addressed to srg320.

What is "LUT"?
There are different ways to instantiate module in a verilog, port list with same order and port list with name
LookUp Table, small reprogrammable parts of the FPGA, if I want to explain quite simply.
Thanks i will look at it
We have a finite number of it inside a FPGA.
And like other devs here have already explained (Robert), when we are reaching or exceeding 90% of LUT usage, it will be much more complex for adressing everything on time and compiling with timings requirements.
Holy shit here we go
Available
Shit ram people time to ride
battles and sprites in Grandia fixed
I'm checking my opened issues within the next minutes.
Assault Suit Leynos 2 no change
There were font issues in Delisoba Deluxe that now appear fixed
Tenchi wo Kurau II and Super Tempo NOT fixed.
Rayman is broken, same bug as with SSF (controls are too sensible now and are crashing the input poll rate). Same changes are necessary on the SCU for a regression fix.
I've seen the same bug on Kronos back then, I will check if I have the discussion with FCare, Benjamin and myself on how they fixed the bug anymore.
@naive whale bacon time
no change in sega rally for me
white screens after stage 1
shows stage 2 flash screen, and then white screens
so no change for 2.5
for that game yeah
tryin a few others
Blast Wind still incurs the sound issues
so no change there
no big
I'll send y ou any footage if there is any lol
for me the correct operation of sdram 2.5 with core saturn is the same as with 2.9, it is not there for now.
sorry can you restate that, should I not continue testing?
yes sure
for me the correct operation of sdram 2.5 with core saturn should be the same as with 2.9, it is not there for now
is that kingdom Grandprix
is that super Mario bros
yes
lmao
this is much more stable for this game
it used to crash immediately for me
LMAO I like that you were typing something and probably realized halfway through โthis guy is an idiotโ
Lolol
I was gaming!
Iโll have to check out soukyugurentai, awesome that it works now
so this is one win tho
yeah its not crashing in the cutscrenes or anything
there are graphical issues with the sprites
but I think its some of the shader type shadow things
smaller issues, still playable
Daytona menu fixed
Pandemonium intro FMV works ok now too
But the game remains slow.
yes
For Rayman, I think the problem is on the SCU interrupt mask mechanism.
More a flag incorrectly set on the SMPC on register OREG.
But I don't know to do it, so I will leave some clues to srg 320 on the issue report.
smooth intro no stutter full sound
(shit ram reporting in)
ya good here
im just watching cartoons
does this game have a gameplay part
I wonder what a Simple Look Up Table would be? ๐ค
Pandemonium is slow
Been busy collecting more games to test out so I haven't tested out the new core build yet.
Sega Rally music still cuts out on whatever RAM the multisystem uses. Some graphics are fixed though.
do you get past stage 1
Yes
Hyper Duel Intro still doesnt work on 2.5
BUT the game doesnty IMMEDIATLEY crash now!
you dont have to speedrun the options to get into the game
Does anyone else get major audio stuttering in Powerslave/Exhumed? I wonder if thatโs fixed.
last time I played it I dont remember stuttering but wow that was probably September last year
I use the dual ram build, maybe itโs better on the single ram build?
I cant remember what I tested it on last time
I stopped using 2.5V and moved to 2.9V or Dual 3.0V depending on tests late summer
I have not noticed that problem , only with the shading. I also use DS
so Hyper Duel is now stable to run and it doesnt crash in menus and stuff on 2.5 for sure, this is a good change
Thunder Force V still unstable on 2.5 ram
Puyo Puyo Sun is fixed (as well as NBA Jam sprites and some other games).
ooh that sprite issue on NBA Jam in my last vid was fixed eh?
Maybe check asuka 120 then...seemed like a similar problem
I am in the second level now, as for now no problems
music is ok, sound and speech ok etc.
The sprite problem was the same for some games, a problem with the frame buffer if I read correctly the changelog on the VDP.
hooray! going to check it out now
Asuka 120% is fixed too, but it remains some sounds missing when doing special moves.
Like some interrupts aren't catched in time by the sound chip or are neutralized.
Guardian Heroes (usa) seems to have issues - not sure if this is a recent regression as itโs been a while since I played last
what issues ?
Its been stable for awhile
there is crunch
its on specific stages and character combinations
Canโt progress from the character select and choosing load game seemed to lock up. Hmm could it be save data I wonder? As I just went to options first then it was okโฆ.
gonna capture some Power Slave cause of you @burnt matrix
and Asuka 120 improvements
to go with some other shit
and everthing is super slow now
controller not working again
maybe this is related to the problem Rayman has
same for core 20240204, works ok with core 20240202
Time Gal & Ninja Hayate (Japan) (En,Ja) are working ( @naive whale )
Arrrrg I died in the third level by falling in the acid!!
this game rules
I love the level design
Itโs a halfway step between doom and quake
thanks for the info ! I reported the bug on github.
@mortal mist you are so awesome for keeping on top of GitHub issues โค๏ธ
ooh interesting
Zet-sensei is a master , not me ๐
Oh yeah heโs building the core
Guardian Heroes can't even load on my systems.
So maybe SCU AND DDRAM issues, 2 for 1.
I've seen similar issues in-game like with Rayman on that game with SW emulators, that's right.
my name is @naive whale and oh my god have you played Grandia, itโs the best game of all time, oh wow look at it. Did you see the sprites have lines in them? That is the core development, there are lines in sprites. Like and subscribeโ
trying some captures now
I just did your video for you, youโre good
Yes, for me it only launches on the 3rd to 4th attempt. I have also reported this.
and I took care of your old lady last night...glad we can trade work now and again
work ok with 20240202 core
20040206 is broken for Guardian Heroes ?
yes, 04 too
Okay.
lol I am still so afraid of wearing my headphones when capturing Saturn
Cause of the audio pops?
sometimes its too loud randomly
Cool it looks normal again.
Power Slave does seem better @burnt matrix
Why does everyone in that game look like a fat baby?
stop teeing up jokes lol
Aww the Formula Karts game doesnโt work anymore
It has performance anxiety...you told me that you are affected by that too
It's a travesty that Robby abandoned his fat baby profile icon.
sorry was I supposed to keep that private?
I cant seem to find issue with the sprites in Grandia now
Neither do I.
so that seems fixed along with Asuka 120. Not gonna retest NBA Jam. I do not care about that one enough
Just the menus aren't aligned for Grandia.
I should retest Shining Force III, and see if it still has common random crashes in battle.
I was going to ask. ๐
Just popping in different games to see if there are any issues.
I should try Taromaru and/or Darius Gaiden at a later time.
I'm pretty busy today.
Is it possible to retest Dragon Master Silk when possible too ? Thanks @ancient surge
capturing Time Gal now. That didnt work before eh?
The game was freezing on a black screen with just some score layer after the first in-game FMV (Time gal being inside the whirl).
works great now
For Ninja Hayate, the game was freezing on a similar screen after Ninja Hayate was swimming hidden with a bamboo straw.
probably do vid mon or tues since I just did Saturn at 4 pm yesterday
def not 4 tomorrrow...sending it out to die against the Superballstravaganza
So, you have everything for explaining on your next video what wasn't working before.
Eh?
I was saying that if you add Time Gal on the video, you know how older builds were doing with the game - the game was freezing on some FMV before entering the main game.
I tested it out earlier, and nothing was changed.
Okay, thanks for your time and the test. @ancient surge
Gotta go for now.
Ahh I get it. Yep all good
GOD DAMMIT NOT AGAIN
โThings @burnt matrix heard in the bedroom in two minutes or less for $1000 Alexโ
Interesting, I actually got through the first battle in Shining Force III without a crash! First time that has ever happened.
Not sure yet if it was just pure luck, or that there has actually been a genuine improvement on that front.

Whoa, thatโs a ton of changes
well untested needs to be less ๐
is there a test rom for the saturn? I used to be able to load saturn games on both my misters but now they dont work on either - im using v.3 2 chip ram, games are in /saturn bios has been changed to boot.rom
the core loads but when i try to load a game it doesnt start
is it the bios for the correct region and are you setting the region in the core
or are you usign a region free bios
also you should be using the Redump Saturn sets not anything home made
yeah bios is correct - it just says checking disk format - i suspect its the roms im using (although they did used to work!)
thank you, ill download a test file from that
I use the CHD variants
is there a preferred bios file to rename?
I use the Hi Saturn v 1.02 region free
I just simulated the Super Bowl on Madden 97 on the Saturn core and the results came in:...John Madden said @burnt matrix sucks
lies Taylor wasnt there
changed the bios - downloaded from that dump - still get the same problem, bios shows up but the game wont load, dang
with a redump set ?
