mister vs Saturn

#

will post to the git in a min

wet hull
#

Yes video playback is darker

#

Sound still needs attention

mortal mist
#

yeah , srg320 is working on getting rid of the bugs , everything will come in time

ancient surge
#

Oh so that's why Super Tempo doesn't work.

tawny forge
#

Only possible on MARS for sure 🙃

ripe valley
#

The sole thing that should be complex with the MiSTer should be the Video Card support.

#

Everything else needs time, attention and research.

#

People tend to not remember or even don't have the knowledge from where we came from with the Saturn emulation.

hearty marten
#

The core doesn’t seem that far off to me

tawny forge
mortal mist
#

what is already there , is a very big achievement

#

it will certainly get better and better

thorn pagoda
#

to be fair even srg isn't (or wasn't) sure its possible at the outset

#

he was basically like "well it better fit on the de10 cos thats what i've got" (paraphrasing)

mortal mist
#

yes of course, but I prefer to be careful and not say what is possible and what is not at this stage, I am not an fpga or Saturn expert . I prefer to wait for the final result

thorn pagoda
#

yeah i trust his judgement and he's still at it like, two years later so he must still think its probably possible at least

ripe valley
#

I don't pretend to be an expert but I served as a beta tester for the most Saturn SW emulators these last 20 years.
And I've seen where all the devs had to pass and understand on the architecture of the Saturn ecosystem.
What struggles and what is lacking on all implementations.
And how they surpassed their own limitations and done new discoveries + some undocumented findings.

wet hull
#

I'll be honest, if the sound issues are sorted, this is a stable core

#

Currently playing through Shining force 3

burnt matrix
#

It’s hilarious. It’s like the Saturn is an old timey record player.

ripe valley
#

From my point of view, when I check the last commits on the core, srg320 seems to search mostly on squashing the last bugs on the two VDP chips.
That's also why I'm doing mostly issue reports (and thanks also to the others here) on errors coming from those chips.

burnt matrix
#

Yah, he’s focus firing on the visuals. Smart move.

ripe valley
#

For the games which can't be launched, most probably some race conditions or some specific cases to be implemented on the SCU.

#

From my personal experience of past beta testing phases, the SCSP chip (sound chip) is the most complex to implement in terms of efficiency and timings.
You need the rest to be in order before working on it.

#

And people like Steve Kwok (NOVA) or even FCare (Kronos) have focused on other chips implementations and synchro before even working on the SCSP more thoroughly.

#

I'm pretty confident on the core for one thing : the core could run Rayman without any hack implemented.

That game is a pretty nice test-case in itself, I had access to the source code of the game years ago and the team working on it was pure evil or old French demomakers wanting to show off their skills on a rather 'new' system.
That's also why all those 3D levels transitions and some 2D optimizations tricks on that game.

All SW emulators either can't get the game to work and the commands to respond without going completely crazy (SSF/old versions of Kronos), or without relying on specific hacks & special cases (Mednafen/Beetle, NOVA).

Sure, a scene from a single stage have a problem on vertical scrolling, but everything else just works like intended.
Pretty impressive for me, and that shows the already mature situation of the core.

wet hull
#

About visuals, need to test Cotton 2 again. I remember that stage 2 backgrounds had some vertical tearing

At the moment, we're just leaving a note there.
I don't know if we should split it with two issue reports or not, as it is also FMV-related.

exactly what I was thinking.

I briefly played my favorite Saturn hidden gem this morning

I am determined to make an English translation of that game this year

gloomy hedge

I havent seen any negativity personally, I think people can have their own theories and expectations on what can be accomplished on the hardware, thats not negativity in my eyes

#

its just another ceiling that needs breaking

gloomy hedge

I did get to go to the stage 1 boss and confiscate his gear and then defeat him and carry him up into the sky

I dont know, it doesnt matter, I did all the research a couple times for this forum but it doesnt seem to make a difference, I could dig up my pictures I guess

wet hull
#

Apparently it is not compatible with that sdram

gloomy hedge
#

I havent seen bulletproof literature about sdram compatibility so far, so I'm leaving it aside until the core is good enough for me to bring it up as an issue

wet hull
#

Cotton 2 from Redump set?

gloomy hedge
#

I think I have like 2.6?

#

yes redump

#

although there are TWO redump sets

#

I'll look up my ram pics and send across, but I dont want to unscrew my mister again tbh

#

it hasnt seemed to help in the past

#

I think out of the 5 or 6 people I know who have misters, everyone has a different experience with the core, so it just is what it is, im sure its SDRAM related but if at some point the core is complete and there is a "SDRAM requirement" published, I'll have to take that seriously haha

#

would be the only core with this, I assume, at least so far

#

till then I will simply wait for now, but happy to help if there is testing required of course

A while back someone mentioned Cotton 2 was not working.

So I decided to test it out again, and it seems to be pretty fine for me. Beat the first boss, play the "catch the tea" minigame, the cutscene plays afterwards, can get onto the next stage, etc.

I don't know the exact issue, but maybe it's a RAM timing issue?

tribal burrow
#

Quick question, do I still need to be on unstable for the latest Saturn build to work? (Single ram)

Found a new problem. Dragon Master Silk is having issues with rendering the walls. Specifically when dealing with diagonal angles, it causes the polygons to become distorted.

I was reading some old Saturn emulators source codes (especially interested by the 1.28.00 version of Mednafen), as I see some notes in order to correct Discworld as being unresponsive with a controller.
And also the problem with the US/EU versions of Primal Rage being finnicky for booting/responding in-game.
The same bugs that we have on the core currently.
Really seems to be SMPC-related condition with a special case to be declared.

At the moment, I see where the two problems could come from, but I can't translate them to the core source code (syntax is completely different).
Maybe giving that hint to srg320 at a latter time through the issue report logs.

EDIT : Possible regression on Rabbit.

#

I wanted to test the game as I see an issue report today, I can't reproduce the bug from @cold egret
The game goes in-game for me without any problem, but I have only a big blue square box on the character select screen now with core 20240125.

Rabbit broke on core 20240122.
Core 20240120 is okay, so there is a regression.

Im having a problem with this core, where almost every time I start it up I get a snow noised video. Im pretty sure it's somehow the core, because I can from there jump to another core, and then get completely perfect video, jump again to another core, and still get perfect video. Randomly (can't figure out any correlatable reason), I can get clean video out of the saturn core, but then next power off power on, it goes back to noisy. I have a dual SD RAM setup (implying a digital IO board). I have tried both single and dual stick rbf files, as well as multiple versions of the files. The BIOS files are fine, because while video is snowy, it still runs games, and will boot into the BIOS.

#

Any help would be greatly appreciated 🙂

#

Also, thinking it COULD have been a PS problem, I just today got a 10A power supply

#

still sadly didn't fix the issue

ancient surge
lean forum
#

No, haven't done that

#

Lemme look into that

#

and THANK YOU

stiff patrol
#

that switch SW3 must be set for a digital IO board

lean forum
#

Yeah, I saw that, and Im 99% certain I did that, but I can definitely double check

stiff patrol
#

I assume you are going to a HDMI TV and not a CRT via an adaptor

lean forum
#

I do "tend" to follow, and definitely have a good (albeit never have done an emulator SW, or HW myself yet) understanding of all the HW stuff going on here, as I USED to be an FPGA HW and SW dev myself

#

Yes sir

#

AND, I have tried both a TV, and a (more) computer monitor (just thinking that somehow the HDMI signal might be being misinterpreted)

stiff patrol
#

other thing is to rename the Mister.ini to Mister.ini.old that will force a default ini file

#

if that works then its your ini

lean forum
#

what's SUPER interesting, is that when I boot JUST the BIOS, the BIOS overlay graphics dont have the snow on them, but the initial gray Saturn screen, and then thus the background graphics have the snow

#

then when a game is started, the entire screen (again) has snow

stiff patrol
#

try the default ini

#

and check that switch

#

also run the memtest core

#

and make sure your ram is actually good

#

Again I am assuming you are using 2 chip ram sticks

#

and not 4 chip ram sticks

#

and that your ram is modern 2,5 or above

lean forum
#

Yes, 2 chip from misteraddons

stiff patrol
#

and both sticks are facing outwards as required

#

and you are on the pins and not off by one

#

thats happened to people before

lean forum
#

Not off by one LOL, actually if done right, the digital board is tight enough designed around the sticks that it won't allow it LOL

stiff patrol
#

people have managed it

lean forum
#

LOL, I can imaging 🙂 Good note, Ill keep that in mind, and it has definitely been a WHILE since I have been a hardware guy, but...............

stiff patrol
#

your best bet is the default ini

lean forum
#

Ill try that, and the RAM test, Ive wondered if somehow I had a bad stick, so Ill run that overnight

stiff patrol
#

only need 15 mins

#

and it will only test one bank

#

it cant test the 2nd bank

lean forum
#

Has anybody looked into building a tester that can do both?

stiff patrol
#

yes but it could potentially damage the analog boards

#

so its not available

lean forum
#

Curious, are there any signals that could be read by software to know whether it is the analog or digital board present, or read that switch line to know it there is a second one installed?

#

By the way, my GOAL (as I will retire in around 2.5 years) is that I would love to get further involved with this hardware FPGA retro gaming community, perhaps as a dev myself.

With a partial revert on the VDP1 code from core version 20240122, I can use Rayman and Rabbit once more.
I need to test a little bit more and redo the Single RAM version later and/or see with srg320 if a PR is acceptable.

ripe valley
#

On VDP1.sv, line 589
I reverted partially the code to

srg320 removed the || CMD_TEXT_SIZE_OVER) condition on 2024-01-22 version of the core but it breaks at least Rayman and Rabbit.

Run it and if the red number goes up its bad, the test will drop to a new frequency and try again if it gets below 130 your ram is effectively useless for the saturn

lean forum

Yep, the red count is still 0!

#

So Im guessing it isnt the first ram stick.

#

Interestingly, the problem persists regardless of using the single or dual RBFs

stiff patrol
#

did you use a default ini yet

#

or a different HDMi port on the TV and a different cable

Not, yet, BUT I just now, got it to boot into the saturn core perfectly, twice, but then it went back to staticy

it will tell you if its something you have in your current ini

lean forum

although you may need the USb for a controller to navigate the menu

Im going to upload a vid to show what Im seeing, because it is actually strange

stiff patrol
#

and you are direct no switches, capture device etc

lean forum
#

Yes sir

#

What you'll see is that it isn't HDMI corruption

#

Because the Linux interface looks pristine, other cores look pristine, and even the saturn core, the Saturn splash screen has snow, but the overlain symbology in the bios screen is pristine also

naive whale
lean forum
#

RIGHT??????????????

#

but again, it can't possibly be an HDMI issue

#

all other cores are perfect, and the perfect BIOS symbology

atop corrupt backround

burnt matrix
#

Is it a recent thing? Has it been fine with older core builds?

lean forum
#

No, every core build give me this

#

sadly

naive whale
#

ok I am going to say its a bad ram stick

lean forum
#

It has been the perfect symbology overlay on the bad background video that has made me belive it is the core though, and not HDMI

naive whale
#

almost looks like ram corruption you'd see on hardware when there were read/write/addressing errors

#

and why just saturn? well I have no clue lol

lean forum
#

RAM tested overnight, and tested good

naive whale
#

you on dual or single ram build?

lean forum
#

dual ram build, but same corruption regardless of rbf

naive whale
#

swap modules

#

see if that changes

lean forum
#

what Im afraid of, is that the core is using an FPGA LUT that just so happens to be bad on MY chip

naive whale
#

just change the sticks off the GPIO to switch sides of the DE10 and retest

lean forum
#

because that could very well be the problem

thorn pagoda
#

try a lower output resolution ? kinda looks like one of those scaler meta-instability things

stiff patrol
#

he used a default ini

lean forum
#

what about the perfect symbology overlaying?

#

@thorn pagoda

thorn pagoda
#

does the osd go through the scaler? i can't remember

versed violet
#

I would secure the Saturn connector to the PCB. eg. using some Zip Tie : you can drill a hole on each side of the PCB round the connector and put a zip tie. If the PCB is not wide enough, a simple indentation will be enough to avoid the Zip to move and escape.

lean forum
#

@thorn pagoda - sorry, the Saturn BIOS symbology Overlay is perfect

thorn pagoda
#

480i/240p difference maybe ? does seem unlikely tho

naive whale
#

let me ask a dumb question....you DONT have your power cable intertwined with your HDMI cable yes?

#

id highly doubt only ONE core would see an effect but I have seen interference across HDMI randomly when someone on set will keep them touching

#

rare but it does happen

lean forum
#

Gosh no LOL

naive whale
#

grasping at straws but hey...were at that point it seems

naive whale
lean forum
#

great question though. HDMI parameters however also make that more than likely not to be a problem

naive whale
#

ok here's what I think / would suggest: 1st...do a fresh MicroSD install with a fresh core and bios. Your card would have to be full AF to continually write to the same addresses when you delete and re-add the core now...but cant 100% rule out some weird write error on the card. But hey...Ive seen it once on my shit

naive whale
#

2nd: swap your ram sticks around and retest

#

if either of those show no difference then yeah I think its pointing to a fault on the DE10 itself. But that JUST manifesting in ONE core would be highly unique

lean forum
#

Yeah, the twist rate, the shielding, the fact that HDMI is digital and compress makes that extremely difficult, especially when pairing with the fact that video in every other case is pristine

#

Switching RAM sticks, at least for the 1st 2 power cycles seems to give good video for the single ram stick build

lean forum
#

Odd though, given the RAM test revealed no problems

naive whale
#

I am glad my instincts were getting somewhere

lean forum
#

LOL

naive whale
#

ok so my next suggestion is to take the stick that just worked FOR A BIT, leave that in, remove the second stick, flip the dip for single ram and retest

lean forum
#

I new if I got on here with another couple brilliant hardware people, Id get SOMEWHERE 🙂

stiff patrol
naive whale
#

if you can get stability off the stick that tested good a FEW times, with the other stick removed and the DIP flipped I think we can say the cause

naive whale
stiff patrol
#

the switch is not to tell it dual ram its to configure the DE10 to use the Digital board

naive whale
#

ok just remove the IO then

stiff patrol
#

removing the digital IO board will have 0 effect

naive whale
#

or can he just remove the second stick altogether and test? Ive never attempted that config because it isnt something anyone would do...minus trying to diagnose this one weird problem

stiff patrol
#

its not outputing

#

its just there to provide a User port

thorn pagoda
#

just running a single sd-ram build is enough no?

stiff patrol
#

yes single ram build will not use the 2nd stick at all

thorn pagoda
#

yeah

naive whale
lean forum
#

Yep, and thats what I did

stiff patrol
#

or remove the second stick as the digital IO board doesnt need 2 sticks fitted

lean forum
#

True, given the parameter I laid out!!!

naive whale
#

I am just thinking how many items can be removed from the chain so as to potentially isolate what part could be producing an issue...reductive reasoning lol

thorn pagoda
#

pretty much has to be that sdram that just got moved to slot2 right

naive whale
stiff patrol
#

to test the ram you fit one stick, run memetest, then swap the ram with the other stick and run memtest again

naive whale
#

but yeah SOMETHING seems "fucky" with the ram

thorn pagoda
#

see if it behaves in the psx dualram core

naive whale
#

id also check the ram module solder joints. Make sure they are all solid. Could be as simple as a cold joint / cracked joint

stiff patrol
#

we would also need to see a screenshot of the ram test after say 15 mins

naive whale
#

and movement / mechanical tension could be causing issues

lean forum
#

Just tried the Saturn DS core, and it NOW seems to be outputting good video also

naive whale
lean forum
#

LOL

stiff patrol

then you likely had a bad insert of the ram

Well, looking at the resolutions available, it makes sense (assuming the majority of home console owners aren’t going to turn their tv on their side). Looks like the arcade resolution is 352x224

#

Given the max vertical resolution non-interlaced on the Saturn appears to be 256, they needed to interlace it to get full resolution after rotation

feral fractal
#

The game does have a tate mode that's 240p. it's only interlaced in yoko.

naive whale
feral fractal

For sure, it's still a nice option to have for a more accurate arcade experience. It's a bit niche, but unarguably superior.

Used to TATE the console TV

#

Wait, this one is even better

feral fractal
#

Awesome! I knew a kid that had a console tv like that and would lay on his side for tate games. Smarter, not harder...

trim nimbus
#

Would be nice if the mister had a better deinterlacer for sure; one of the reasons I am on the fence for a tink 4K

I am not a fan either. I loaded up doa and noped out pretty quickly.

Fmvs are low quality and low res, but those artifacts are different than weave deinterlacing 480i, as soon as there is motion you will see combing, and that is much more distracting. The cheap alternative resource wise is using bob, you lose resolution and the image is jittery, but no more artifacts during motion. In games where 480i is used only in static menus weave is preferable though, so an option to toggle between both is the best we could get for now.

Haven't been here in a while, anyone know if SNAC has been included in any of the recent saturn builds? Really looking forward to using my 3D pad

I recall the last time we had SNAC in the build was when Blue1 added it manually to one specific version, but that was a very, very long time ago

pearl harbor
#

I still keep that build on my MiSTer just for the 3D controller support. Luckily, most of the games that benefit from the controller are basically unchanged from that build compared to the latest build.

maybe I'll post an updated build later if you guys want. still in the process of trying to clean it up

tiny flare
#

keen for more general analogue trigger support so you have options for other 3d pads, although yeah how you would do it and what the UI would look like for it is a fun question - dinput style +/- on one axis or xinput style seperate axes?

#

somehow you'd have to reconcile that

kindred sundial
#

Asked this in the misteraddons discord but curious if anyone else is having an issue with the last few Saturn unstable builds where the l and r triggers are being recognized by the reflex adapt but not doing anything within the core? I tested Bulk Slash with a Japanese Saturn pad and all the controller inputs were recognized by the reflex adapt but in the core the l and r triggers are unresponsive.

Well... not sure what is going on. A new ram stick didn't fix my sound issues on SOTN. Single Ram with 3.0 128. The second ram slot has a 2.5 128, but the behaviour is the same in SR/DR cores. No voice acting, and the music seems much fainter in the right channel over the left. I haven't run into any behavior like this on any other cores. I also tried running hdmi directly into my tv vs through my AVR to see if it was some sort of speaker issue. I also double checked my source file, definitely the correct version. Am I missing something?

pearl harbor
#

I also have the issue with SotN with the music mostly only coming out of the left channel (sound effects come out of both channels though). I don't have any of the other issues.

I see where someone had no issues with Guardian Heroes, but the latest unstable build has a lot of weird graphical glitches for me, including character sprites leaving behind mirror images (kind of like the Alucard effect in SotN except they don't disappear). Is this a core issue, or potentially a RAM issue? I've got an older single 128MB in there (probably 2.5). Other games I tested very briefly seemed better - Shining Force 3 (some polygon seam issues), Bulk Slash, Magic Knight Rayearth (hitching during opening FMV, not sure if there on real hardware), and Linkle Liver Story.

The core is Beta and subject to change that may break existing games without warning

#

its the nature of the development

#

3.0/2.9 Ram is currently best for the core

#

2.5 ram has more issues

#

and 4 Chip Ram is a no go

Yep, I'm currently on 3.0. Have we seen inconsistent behaviours on different setups with similar hardware before?

I know the speed on my RAM is pretty good, even if it's 2.5 - it runs the jotego CPS2 cores fine and passes all those memory tests. What's the bigger advantage with the 2.9/3.0 RAM? More stability, if I remember right?

Just started really messing with the Saturn, do some games just not have sound?

And some games just have other audio bugs. Like Elevator Action Returns having maniacal laughter that shouldn't be there whenever an explosion occurs.

That's also a problem with most games. Very quiet audio.

On the right-hand pane in the Saturn pop-up menu, there is an option to reset settings and save settings. Choose reset (of course you need to re-set up the core, but it's nothing dramatic).

the slow down is a core issue

happened again with Cerberus in the underground catacombs

I think the flame effects in the background are to blame here

not going to report this as a bug as the core is still WIP

going back to the same area after the kill doesn't trigger the slowdown

Weird, I think my problem with Guardian Heroes was with the ISO I was using. I could have sworn I was using Redump, but it was giving issues even booting properly with the US BIOS, even with the region set correctly. The problems I saw were after using a patched worldwide BIOS. But ripping my old CD-R copy to a BIN/CUE with ImgBurn is working perfectly. Wonder if something was goofy with that upload? I also tried a CHD version that did the same thing, so... I dunno.
