I was literally coming in here to say I can't load using the Hitachi bios

naive whale
#

Linkle Liver Story next

balmy prawn
#

time to try a different BIOS

naive whale
#

Marvel seems near to perfect

stiff patrol
#

well it loads

#

then crashes

naive whale
stiff patrol
#

yes

naive whale
#

ok so its not just me. Thanks

stiff patrol
#

Thats dual memory too

naive whale
#

I am on my Dual Ram build but using Single to test

#

since I know thats what 99% of everyone is using

stiff patrol
#

I am in the 1 % !

#

suck it peasants

ancient surge
#

Me too. 🤡👍

balmy prawn
#

OK, So figured out my issue. I needed to enable the 4mb RAM

naive whale
#

Linkke Liver Story is just SO not self-explanatory

#

just dumps you in...best of luck

stiff patrol
#

even with that the Xmen V SF crashes in game

mossy crystal
#

Has anyone tested if Grandia is now fixed?

stiff patrol
#

and you can only get in game by hitting start quickly

naive whale
#

testing the new SotN on the new core then to edit

pearl harbor
#

I'll test X-Men vs SF in a minute. Shall I break the trend!? Or just...break the game.

fallow oracle
#

oh don't get me started on linkle

#

me, a rhythm gamer, still trying to figure it out

hearty marten
#

I wonder if this update fixes the FMVs being too dark in Sakura Wars 🤔

pearl harbor
#

Got into a match in X-Men vs SF, it worked for maybe 10 seconds of gameplay before it crashed. Womp womp.

naive whale
#

gone are the days of diff results

pearl harbor
#

Good for srg320! Easier to trouble shoot.

#

Dang, Shining Force III still crashes in battles.

balmy prawn
#

So after testing all three dumps across all three Hitachi, all three Sega, and the one Victor BIOS, I can confirm that for me on a single module of v2.9 SDRAM X-Men crashes in game every single time. Sometimes it's at character select, sometimes it's right on the loading screen, and sometimes it's in the first match, but it always freezes.

ripe valley
#

X-Men vs SF. Random crashes on my side (once when loading the intro, once on the select screen, once during my first battle).

naive whale
#

I think we can safely say not playable

ripe valley
#

Digital Pinball - Necronomicon works perfectly now, was crashing with a green screen since 4-5 builds.

#

Super Tempo, no change (as someone asked earlier).

Does the audio in Nights and Panzer Dragoon still drop out? Guessing yes but won’t have time to test until tonight

now back to Saturn testing on Pi 5 lol

ripe valley

Please test Grandia once more. 😉

Really happy bout the new update, mostly because I got a bit worried for srg.

naive whale

forget the core...just so he can keep on keeping on

hardy lodge

Oh he got out? Don't know nothing about his circumstances except for being in the occupied part.

naive whale

he tweeted a bit ago he had gotten out of occupied areas

hardy lodge

🥳🥳🥳

#

He should move in with robert, imagine what could be possible with two geniuses.

ripe valley

He got out, bought some MiSTer parts and was waiting for those to arrive before getting back on the core.

Looks like the "fix system date" note doesn't mean a general RTC fix... unless I'm missing something.
Set current date on loading Christmas Nights, Menu defaulted back to 2024/01/01 00:00. If I let the time tick over a minute on main screen and enter and exit options, it returns to 00:00

Stable today should be pretty up to date.

Since it's....today. I didn't check where it was cut, but it's probably pretty complete.

Sega Rally Chamionship works for me in the Forest stage

Ive been wondering this

#

@balmy prawn Which bios did you recommend to me yesterday? A Hi-Saturn version?

#

mayge thats my issue

balmy prawn
tiny flare
#

it works for me currently with engine sounds on the region free Hi-Saturn BIOS

#

but the sound will eventually randomly drop out if I play for a while

balmy prawn
#

yeah, sounds are just not quite there right now with the core period. even with dual SDRAM

jagged quartz
#

Ive never had engine sounds with the most recent ram from misteraddons

balmy prawn
#

make sure you're using the latest build of the core

tiny flare

I'll check again on today's build, I haven't played anything on the saturn core for quite a while now...

#

who knows, it may even have regressed for me - it's all still a WIP obviously

Just added the navi hi saturn bios. Region free is nice, but I miss the US saturn bootup...

Could someone recheck the first level of Astal, I don't remember the slowdowns on the music that I heard after liberating the bird.

mortal steppe
#

I had improvements in Die Hard Arcade (sounds work good even if it's low) in the rest of issues i had with the latest core nothing changed, Clockwork Night hangs at the fmv, but pressing start It goes on but without music, the same for Panzer Dragoon 1 and 2, Sega Rally Lost sound in the attract mode, Nights during the character select. Radiante Silvergun crash at the First level, X-Men vs Street Fighter stop at black screen after the loading screen. 128mb SDRAM V2.4

ripe valley
#

For me, the core works much better.

I've seen some subtle improvements :
Clockwork Knight 1 & 2 on texture loading (like the dinosaur's skeleton on Stage 1 and the giraffe on Stage 2) compared from the previous one in October 2022.
Dark Savior improved too with correct textures now on the first minutes of the game.
Daytona USA is improved on textures and no more exploding polygons on the intro (but the sound is super low).
Densetsu no Ogre Battle works.
Marvel vs. Street Fighter works (checked with 3 stages in a row and the full intro).
Digital Pinball - Necronomicon works.
Die Hard have sound effects (but the global volume is super low).

Far less sound cut offs (with a Dual RAM 2.9 128MB system), I have a different experience from Mister Fox.

Elevator Action Returns still has the audio bug with the insane laughter when an explosion occurs.

The polygon shading issues are still present in games like Nights Into Dreams (also, no audio issues at all in that game)

Afterburner II still has no audio.

Can confirm that Salamander 2 is completable. Did a full play through.

Power Drift still does not have screen rotation.

No audio issues that I can notice in Radient Silvergun.

Vampier's unstable-nightlies script isn't pulling down the most recent build... I looked at the unstable-nightlies json file and I see two entries for each of the Single and DualRam Saturn builds. One for 20231004, and one for 20240110. Shouldn't there be only one entry? It looks like Vampier's script looks for the first entry in the JSON file and considers it the most recent, which the first Saturn core entry on the list is the 20231004 build. (Correct me if I'm wrong on this)

#

To be clear, I don't think Vampier's script is incorrect. I think the json file is incorrect.

Im glad you said something. Here I was wondering why Salamander 2 is still not working, and its because I pulled my copy using Vampiers script

yes , someone else wrote that there is still no music with 2.5 in SR , so I doubt that it has been completely fixed.

I doubt that everything has already started working on 2.4/2.5

ancient surge

Asuka 120% Burning Fest Limited has not changed. I was hoping the color calculation changes would of fixed the shadows in particular, but I guess it's an unrelated problem.

I'll check how the SR with 2.5 works for me

Dead or Alive no change - slowdowns

Dead or Alive is working better than the previous build, but it remains some slowdowns (1-2 per fight).
Fighters Megamix is better too, but same as the previous game.
Fighting Vipers seems playable after 4 battles, no more (major) slowdowns.

#

The DDRAM controller rework seems to have done some interesting side effects.

Wanted to post about this minor problem, since it has been a problem for a long time and was a regression from a past build many months ago.

I had the chance to pass the crash on a gameplay on Taromaru with the October 2023 core revision.
The game crashes once again after the boat boss on the last revision.

#

Maybe I will need to test if it's a regression or by total chance, but later, much later.

ripe valley
#

I can also hear some persistent micro stutters on the second part of the first stage on Astal, after liberating the bird.
I've already heard them on the 20240110 revision.
Probably will need to recheck with the October 2023 revision tomorrow and hear if it was already there or a regression appeared.

alpine pagoda
ripe valley

Grandia seems a little bit better on speed, I need to confirm with a real Saturn system and previous builds at a later time.

ripe valley
#

Virtua Cop 1 and Virtua Cop 2 are freezing within the first minute of gameplay now on my two systems (Single and Dual).

#

I've tried to reboot the systems completely and start the core fresh as possible.
I can't freeze exactly at the same moment, but it's within 6-7 enemies on the first level (Easy Mode).
On VC1, it's before accessing to the grid.
On VC2, just before or just after 2-3 enemies inside the bank.

#

I've retried and test all the other (opened) issues reported on Github so far, and I can reproduce them, except for "Radiant Silvergun 3A boss freeze".
And I will try to document the issue on Lemmings 3D, as srg320 seems to be interested to take a look.

#

This is probably a good time to ask: I’ve been debating buying an actual Saturn and installing a Fenrir. I’m not obsessed with original hardware as the be all end all but do like playing on the CRT with minimal lag, and other solutions (like CRT Emudriver) seem kinda cumbersome. All of that is to say, is the feeling here that the Saturn core will be in a good space relatively soonish? I’m mostly interested in stuff on the Capcom side of things

#

Just don’t wanna even waste the money when it seems like good progress is being made

#

Might be cold solder joints or something, the saturn core started development shortly after so I didn't care to look much into it

compact vessel
#

I dont have a saturn, but I do have one sealed dutch game... some gameshow game

dim tulip
#

It could need recapped maybe?I entertained buying some broken ones for cheap and seeing what I could do to fix them up. Looks like a Japanese Saturn + Fenrir is the next cheapest alternative on my end.

compact vessel
#

hmm hopefully its something simple broken

dim tulip
#

Yeah could be some kind of trace not making contact, hopefully would be an easy fix. In terms of buying one, I think the big thing for me was that I was on the cusp of getting a PS1 and installing an ODE and, until I joined this discord , was completely out of the loop on how solid the PS1 core is so that ended up saving me a lot of money and effort

#

So was just wondering if the feeling is the Saturn will get there. Totally get that its still in development

It's almost there, the Saturn Core. Check some of the youtube video's out

I will try the JPN version on my side, thanks.
Just to be sure to have a correct issue to submit to srg320 and not wasting his time for debugging something if it was invalid.

mortal mist

ripe valley
# mortal mist in the menu you can not do anything ?

On Primal Rage.
For the JPN version, the game boots and I have the FMV, but no controller reponse inside the game, can't press START or bypass the intro.
For the US version, the BIOS launches the SEGA logo and goes back to the main BIOS menu, with a SEGA Saturn disc detected (infinite loop when you try to reload the game from the menu).

mortal mist
#

intro can't be skipped

#

Primal Rage USA works ok

ripe valley
#

I will recheck, thanks.

#

And you can enter the game after that ?

ripe valley

Okay, I need to search my original disc and redo a dump.
Let's see with a fresh BIN+CUE image.

ripe valley

And thanks for Discworld.

stiff patrol

first time anyone said that about that game !

ripe valley
#

For the methology of tests on the core, I'm reusing some notes from when we (other testers and regular users) had to proof-test Nova, Mednafen and Kronos SW emulators.
Reusing a crossed list of problematic games/demos for one or multiple emulators back then (and even now).

#

So we could poinpoint more easily than having to test the whole fullset.

#

Selective testing.

mortal mist
#

my Japanese list contains 962 games , I will never be able to test it

mortal mist
#

I wish I had the time to do all of this haha

ripe valley
#

And sometimes, bugs are very far inside a game.

I remember a bug on DuckStation on Star Ocean 2, there was a specific bug on a swirl effect before a battle against a boss.

You needed to play more than 30H before discovering it. Stenzek said back then that Tri-Ace games are like evil, even Valkyrie Profile was a nightmare to decompile and for searching freakin' WHY those games were so broken but are working barely on an original system.

#

Or, on Saturn side, a bug on Rayman on Mednafen, where you need to do the whole game and beat the final boss before discovering a 'super' bug with he VDP1.

mortal mist
#

In time, such errors (deep in the game ) will surely appear, as someone invests more time in his favorite games

#

I think a lot of people are waiting until the core is more mature before they start playing

ancient surge
#

I do think it's important that we tackle the more obvious problems first before we dig deeper for the more obscure stuff.

#

For example the innacurate gouraud lighting and CDDA track impact multiple games and is one of those imperfections you can't exactly ignore. Fixing that would automatically improve multiple games simutaniously, then when that is finished the more obscure edge cases could be focused on.

@balmy prawn before I got my Reflex adapters, I was exclusively using my Sn30 Pro Plus 2 for everything. I used to own many of the consoles that I now use MiSTer for and it makes a difference to me using a Reflex adapter + original controller for cores that support it. It feels very satisfying to me. Of course for all other cores, I continue to use the SN30 Pro Plus 2.

Oh believe me, that explosion of those type of games during the 90's is a rabbit role. A lot of developers wanted to throw in their own ideas into the ring in order to cash in on the popularity of Puyo Puyo.

I might have just found another issue that I can't see as having been reported on github - as I'm not registered on github would someone be able to test this game to confirm this issue & report it on there?

Game - Pro Pinball (USA) (redump converted to chd) - Bios = Hi Saturn region free 1.02 - SDram = v3.0 -----Issue - no sound at all but game is playing.

(might help with the Afterburner sound issue later down the line)

there's no hacks that I'm aware of.
There was this one browser addon that shows dislikes, but the numbers aren't accurate and only generated from the addon's database which relies on users who have the addon installed.

Creators can see dislikes on their own videos still, just not the public.

Updating some issues (at a later time) - if necessary.

I'm really happy that srg320 is out of it and could update the core frequently too.

wise brook
#

the Saturn is prolly displaying the same image twice, 2nd instance upside down.
but the core isn't conveying that instruction

#

that would be my guess knowing the sort of memory saving tricks devs would employ

drifting frigate
#

Yeah, that's my guess. Saturn uses vertex based manipulation for normal sprites and it seems like anything negative on Y is just coming out positive in some games.

wise brook

I can only wonder how many little edge cases or rare functions were used on 1 game that srg has yet to discover

the twin sh2 has gotta be the hardest, but most important part of the hardware to recreate as perfectly as possible.

they were capable of so much, just one function not recreated just right must have the potential for a lot of knock on effects

mint jungle
#

on a more serious note, i can't think of many games, particularly those late in a consoles life that doesn't use all sorts of weird tricks to achieve whatever they do to achieve. saturn was notorious for bineg weird to dev for in general due to it's graphical quirks so i can only imagine how many messed up things people used to get their games to just work

Does using the correct region free bios allow not having to change the region in the core for each game? Meaning, the bios works for all games, but does the core make you change the region? Is there a magic bios that skips this?

mortal mist
#

yes ,free region bios allows you to run games from different regions without having to change it in the system

#

but there are exceptions, such as Lemmings 3D PAL, the game will run, but there will be errors, and you still have to set the correct region for this game

I could have sworn I did that
