Should be a fun way to play twin stick games in general

#

Xeno Crisis, Smash Tv, etc.

gloomy hedge
#

I have a couple arcade cabs that are two player that I basically just strongarm into playing those twinsticks

#

So that's two JLFs

#

I don't think the Saturn virtual on style twinstick would be great for that but I'd love to try it and see!

#

Maybe it would be sick, not sure!

serene thunder
#

It's the rotary stick games that are problematic
Smash TV still plays pretty great with SNES layout

gloomy hedge
#

To that effect, virtual on ports are great with a modern dual stick pad like a 360 pad or whatever

#

Let's find out what kind of mistake I just made... Although I'm guessing the core as it stands does not have twinstick controller support 😁

unkempt kelp
#

If I remember correctly the right stick is just digital buttons

How much did it set you back?

I'd love to have one of those

but probably gonna get a pair of DC twinsticks first

# untold lintel How much did it set you back?

An annoying amount. So it was $200 but then another $100 for shipping from a site I've never used before and I have no idea what condition it's in. That's less tho than what it goes for on eBay. The only one I found less than $300 had an awful description... So fingers crossed..

plush pelican
pearl harbor

Metroid is better without question in my opinion.

#

Total transparency, Metroid is my favorite game series of all time. Nothing tops it in my opinion.

I love SotN, but it's not even my favorite metroidvania style Castlevania game. The second half always felt like an afterthought to me in SotN. Still love the game though, but yeah, it's not my favorite.

plush pelican
#

so I'll probably develop a taste for metroidvania's if I play better thought out game in the subgenre then?

pearl harbor

I think so.

#

Super Metroid specifically is the best game ever made in my opinion. Absolute masterpiece.

Zero Mission, Samus Returns 3DS (if you can, if you can't maybe wait because the gameboy game is kind of rough, there's also AM2R), Super Metroid, Fusion, Dread

You can toss the Prime games in there if that interests you

I got the Crissaegrim immediately when I got to the upside down library the first time I played SOTN and I don't know if I'll ever beat that high. Didn't know what it was or why the game was suddenly so broken.

Shmoo or something yeah lol

#

My first play through I didn’t farm it and it just dropped, however at that time I was already op and about to close out the game and kill drac

#

Second play through was with my gf so I could help@her make the game easier

hearty carbon

In my head I got it earlier, but it's later in the game than I thought.

fallow surge
#

And I farmed it. In terms of video game farms its not bad

still maple
#

Hmmm. I also feel i got it on p1 but never managed since.

#

The farm loop is like under 3 seconds. I got it under 10 min last week before the saturn core ate 5 hours of save. Luck code of course tho.

#

So if you don't manually SAVE BACKUP RAM even with autosave on, your game is toast?

That seems to be the key as Castlevania doesn't save at all otherwise

burnt matrix
still maple
#

That is def not working : / What is CARTRIDGE. Have i been saving to internal which evidently does not autosave?

I am triggering the save as well. Familiar with that yes.

burnt matrix
#

Ah damn, sorry to hear. I’m unfamiliar with how that game handles saving beyond the basics.

cunning citrus
still maple
#

Yeah i don't get it. It worked previously, but maybe i manually used save ram then too. The other times i did not and it did not save. And, it's repeatable; if i don't additionally save backup ram it doesn't in fact save. Not sure if that's expected/ user error or a bug. Had autosave on and always invoke menu of course. Hmm

Beware out there. Thanks again.

warped cliff
#

Saturn UMK3 is basically arcade perfect, except a couple stages have the wrong music

#

MK Trilogy on all 3 consoles are each like different games, physics and mechanics wise. They really didn't optimize any of them to a standard like UMK3

Hence why a lot of classic MK tournament communities use UMK3 instead of MKT

#

It would be nice if there were romhackers who could address these issues

plush pelican

a romhacker should also update the assets with the arcade assets

ok so decided to load up MK Trilogy on Saturn (how hard can it be to not instinctively load up Aquazone instead?) and it also feels like the menu and character select have some sort of input delay. I know right? worrying about that in the menu? I don't remember the PS1 version having stutter at the end of a match when the announcer says "Finish Him" mid combo though. You were doing awesome work, but these days even if you spent 5 hours a day on it, because the core reacts so differently for so many different setups, you'd still be getting people who it wasn't accurate for constantly. I still think it was awesome and am grateful for it, but yeah, it's an impossible task to make accurate anyway in a populist way right now.

As far as we know, the different bios files have no affect on the games themselves. So in that regard there is no wrong answer.

But there are hacked versions of the bios that bypass region locking, which is recommended if you don't want to deal with manually changing the region between games.

I know that if it is a known error, I think there is no need to fully simulate it. Fixing errors and adding functions are also core parts. If you don't turn off the controller and test it dozens of times in a row, he can accidentally enter the game. . .

have you put all the bin cue files inside the same folder (if names differs)?

#

yes you have done it surely

#

and save the game and then replace the bins and cue in the same folder?

mortal mist

yes all four cd's should be in the same folder

#

unfortunately, I don't know how the cd change looks like in this game

vestal yoke
#

sort of original xbox hot swapping discs hack 20 years ago?

mortal mist

we don't have the option to open the lid etc

vestal yoke

just load the 2nd disc once you replace the firs disc bins

#

maybe?

mortal mist
#

we'll see when we get to the end of the first disk 🙂

vestal yoke
#

and then choose the saved game?

#

yep

mortal mist
#

in Deep Fear game there is a message about changing the disk, you need to insert disk 2 , but there is no option to open and close the lid , so loading disk 2 does not do anything.

#

maybe someone who has played the game on real hardware can say more (Panzer Dragoon Saga )

#

@vestal yoke yes , there is save at the end

cunning citrus
#

Worst case scenario, boot selecting the game folder, hold A to force into cdplayer, then load the other disc, the cdplayer should show start application, hopefully with the same internal ram, allowing to load the game.

vestal yoke
#

I have to search if there is a converter for gamesaves from emulators to Saturn FPGA core...

mortal mist
#

yeah works

#

after the last save on disk 1 , you need to rename the save file to the name of disk 2 for core to see this save

#

and works

#

disc2 🙂

mortal mist
#

this way you can complete the game

leaden dagger

wait there's no disk switching function yet?

thorn pagoda
#

you can swap discs but i dont think it attempts to emulate the lid open / swap disc / lid close process

#

so some games don't notice

mortal mist
#

or easy way , load cd1 , than select disc 2 , reset the game , there will still be a save from the previous disk in memory

thorn pagoda
#

psx had a bunch of games like this - probably worth logging github issue for it

mortal mist
#

yes, opening and closing the lid is needed for sure

vestal yoke
#

Great achievement!!!

#

ripe valley
#

For Policenauts, when the change disk message appears, load/change the disk with the OSD.
Then select “Reset” on the OSD and you can skip the BIOS animation by pressing a button on your controller.
The second (or third) disk will load automatically.
I don't need to rename anything, just to have all the disks in the same folder.

mortal mist
#

in Panzer Saga when there is a message about changing the disk you have to go to bios , select disk 2 and do a reset and it is ok. But if you restart core , load cd2, the save is not visible because it is assigned to cd1 (name)

mortal mist

I was testing the sonic 3d blaster, the game ran fine, but the game was not saving.
some one else with the same problem?

Sonic 3D Blast on Saturn don't use the internal ram.

drifting frigate
#

There were two typos in the register masks in vdp2_pkg.sv - I don't think it's going to fix anything...they were in masks for vram size (but just version, 8000 vs 800F, and I don't think version is used by anything) and Line Color Screen Enable. This one was set to 0x3FF instead of 0x3F. Since it wasn't overmasking I'm guessing it's probably not going to fix anything. But I built a single ram build with the two masks updated to doumented spec. Nothing seems to be fixed or broken in my limited testing though.

#

I will keep testing a bit and make sure nothing is worse and throw it on the stack on Github, but if you happen to find out it blows up Cleveland or something, let me know.

drifting frigate
#

Srg took the change, so he's safe! Which is awesome every time I see it

mortal mist
#

yeah, srg320 merged your fix

#

🎉

drifting frigate
#

Temper your expectations, folks. It really was a do-nothing fix I'm pretty sure....

drifting frigate
#

No, that's the newest cli build. Always use those over what someone posts in the chat if you can. I didn't submit the version flag because that looked intentional, so it's basically the same as what I posted, but built through official github toolchains.

#

Unstable is the way to go, despite what my guidance counselor said.

quick sorrel
#

(I think I get what you mean) but stick to the unstable-nightlies build basically, yeah?

drifting frigate
#

Yeah, unless you're actively testing a fix, I would.

#

I just wanted a few eyes before I submitted. And the pipeline builds are quick so it's never a long wait.

wise brook
#

soo happy for an SRG check-in

#

and thanks to you Andy for your code work

quick sorrel
#

Thanks. I really don't understand the coding side of all this but it good to hear SRG is okay.

Cheers Andy. Just knowing Srg is safe as a result is more than good enough

I was just about to say "NEW BUILD?!" but then I read the changes. Still exciting to see srg is doin okay!

#

Never know though, maybe this was the biggest change in performance the core has ever SEEN!

Game plays pretty well except for a couple of stages with cages

#

Or a lot going on in the background ..

hearty carbon
#

I loved that game at the time.

#

I don't much recall how it handled the characters without armor fighting the ones with armor though.

#

Fighting Vipers had some interesting ideas that had to mesh into that somehow.

winter phoenix
#

They just chose a couple attacks in each VF character’s move list to be their armor-smashing attacks.

Game developers know what's up, I guess. I'd have been trying to figure out how to shatter the outfits of VF characters

Robby’s fine. He might love the Dreamcast more now, though, because he just got one of those ornaments for his Christmas tree

Gonna need to reconfess his Saturn allegiance

I feel like a fake Saturn fan twice over. I eventually bought a PSX back in the day and on the MiSTer I've been digging around in PSX rpg's I missed originally. 😦

#

I think I bought a PSX for Metal Gear and Bushido Blade

#

But I couldn't let go of my Saturn for a long time 😄

serene thunder

Import Saturn gaming was great back then
Now we have arcade cores for many of the killer Saturn ports

hearty carbon

I remember ordering the mail-in voucher version of VF1 with VF2 textures. Best version of VF1 there was.

#

in my head, at least.

im a psx/n64 guy through and through. saturn i never played once growing up. even playing now, while i did find a lot of titles i liked, most i found kinda meh. astal is one i just don't get the love for. panzer dragoon games i can get. magic knight is one i want to play through. preferred the saturn baroque. night and daytona are pretty good for a short play of fun.

We played through all the endings and put a fair bit of time into the versus arena mode

megaman 8 was different enough to replay... but also a few stages make me dread playing it on either system

hearty carbon
#

Yeah, that's the rough part. A lot of games came out for both and sadly many of them were better on PSX

i still have nightmares where i wake up screaming JUMP or SLIDE

hearty carbon
#

like Bob said though, the MiSTer has some great cores of what were amazing Saturn versions in its day

No need to mess with the Saturn port if you have the actual arcade core available

Got a question, guys. Is it theoretically possible for this core to eventually support the Netlink via the DE-10 Nano's Ethernet port? I'm not sure that's possible, since the Netlink is technically a dialup modem, but it would be so cool to have some kind of online multiplayer functionality on this.

Hi, I just got the Saturn pro controller from retrobit and I am having problems mapping button L and Z, I have another friend with the exact same issue was wondering if anyone found a fix or know anything about this

gloomy hedge
#

does it map in the joystick configuration? but not in the core?

night geyser
#

I can’t map the buttons L and Z on the retrobit pro controller that just released not long ago

gloomy hedge
#

yes you said that before but exactly where are you mapping

#

did you configure joystick buttons in the main mister menu

#

@naive whale this game seems to run literally 100% correctly? did you notice any issues with it in mister?
