#

psx was obviously updated graphically

#

the game is in both Saturn and PSX list

#

someone else mentioned it has extra content as well in the PSX version

dire tree
#

added more games

#

I didnt know there would be 300 when I started the list.... it might end up with 400

kindred peak
#

Are you taking edits?

#

Alien Trilogy on Saturn is lacking the voice overs and slightly downgraded graphics. It also only uses one CPU because the devs couldn't be bothered 😄

kindred peak
#

heh

#

It's true.

#

So... 400? So half the library is "curated"?

dire tree
kindred peak
#

Lighting effects aren't there on Saturn. It just uses diminished lights. Plus the usual dithering for transparencies.

dire tree
#

so its better on psx

#

ill move it out of the saturn category

quite a lot of them are japanese visual novels though tbf

There was only like ~280 in the US, and maybe closer to 800 in Japan.

ah... that explains it... redump is going to have all the revs for each disc.

lusty rapids
#

according to wikipeida

There are 1031[b] games on this list not including non-game software and compilations of Saturn games. There are 785 Japan-exclusive games, making 75% of the whole list.

dire tree
#

i dont download all the revisions just the latest

No need to satisfy me. You're the one making the list.

#

well this is the article if there's a problem to fix in the game list https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Sega_Saturn_games

This is a complete list of all Sega Saturn games.
The Sega Saturn is a 32-bit fifth-generation home video game console that was developed by Sega and released on November 22, 1994, in Japan, May 11, 1995 in North America, and July 8, 1995, in Europe as the successor to the successful Sega Genesis. The Saturn has a dual-CPU architecture and eight...

am I remembering incorrectly or is Darius II in the works for mister arcade?

#

or am I confusing that with Gradius II or something

#

also let me know if saturn has extra content compared to arcade core for any game

#

cause if its just a port with nothing extra and we have arcade version I am leaving it off the list

kindred peak
#

Daytona CCE Netlink Edition has all the Japanese improvements, but I agree... totally playable in Japanese. Japan Fighting Vipers has Pepsiman, so that's a given. Gotta have Pepsiman.

quick sorrel
#

Seriously tho, if my RAM is a 2.9 module with 2 chips, that’s the best situation to have at the moment, yes?

dire tree
# kindred peak Daytona CCE Netlink Edition has all the Japanese improvements, but I agree... to...

Though the western Champion Circuit Edition and Japanese Circuit Edition are by-and-large the same game, Circuit Edition adds further tweaks to the formula, creating the definitive copy of Daytona USA for the Saturn. Circuit Edition extends the draw distance even further, swaps some textures and allows the user to set the time of day in which to race in, whether that be night, dusk or morning. On top of this, the arcade soundtrack is now an option, and new drift mechanics have been implemented, making the game control more similarly to the original arcade version.

kindred peak
#

Ah, but that's why I said Netlink Edition. It came later in the US.

#

But really: unless you have a modem on your Saturn, just leave the Japanese one.

dire tree
#

no ... if you are right I want the usa one

kindred peak
#

I am right. 😄

dire tree
#

i guess i got confused

kindred peak
#

It's understandable. The names aren't exactly the clearest things. 🙂

#

Only reason I know all this is that I've been a Saturn nerd since release day.

dire tree

so CCE Netlink USA is same as Circuit Edition Japan

Yup.

thanks

kindred peak

You're welcome!

dire tree
#

if you notice other issues let me know

kindred peak

I will. It's a good list. Should be helpful for people coming into the system.

dire tree
#

I wonder if we could get netlink/seganet support

#

that wouold be sick

#

i wold imagine it would be possible to emulate the modem

#

and let people connect to each other and play

#

Daytona now fixed on the list

quick sorrel
#

Oh, guess I misunderstood that.

dire tree
#

possibly

#

ive seen a couple people have issues with the other one

#

not even related to saturn

#

I guess I can delete regular USA Championship Circuit Edition ?

#

or should i keep that in the collection

kindred peak
dire tree
#

interesting I didnt know netlink was faster than seganet

#

unless its just for that one game

#

but there arent many games that supported it

#

its amazing saturn even had multiplayer for a handful of games

kindred peak
#

I don't know for certain, but I think it's a hardware difference. American modem could hit 28.8, while Japan was 14.4.

#

I only ever connected to a friend to play Duke Nukem back in the day via Netlink a few times. 😄

trim nimbus
#

Yeah, although in modern times, unless something has changed, supposedly it is better to use a Japanese netlink

dire tree
#

i use to use 56k on pc to play a friend in duke 3d

trim nimbus
#

Now, saying that, the main issue might be that lack of “direct cable support”. Serial connection of two misters might be more likely than netlink

dire tree
#

pretty sure it was that

trim nimbus
#

And if that is the case, you want the Japanese edition?

dire tree
#

japanese has serial connection and usa doesnt?

trim nimbus
#

That is how I read the quote you posted.

#

It says the USA version has all the improvements except direct link.

trim nimbus

I think we are more likely to get serial support than netlink but I could be wrong. Having netlink on mister would be amazing.

not a mister question, but does anyone have experience installing the bitfunx saturn power supply replacement? I ordered it but my saturn doesn't match any of the 4 pictures of types of saturn, which I need to select the voltage

#

it's supposedly compatible with all saturns

#

i think it's probably a type 2 judging by the shape of the original PSU and the individual components, but it's not an exact match

sharp mauve
#

nvm, got her working, it was a model 2

sharp mauve
#

i dont know why the twinbee games arent talked about more

waxen vortex
# sharp mauve it's supposedly compatible with all saturns

It is compatible with All Saturn models. It can appear confusing at first but I have used 2 of these. 1 for a Japanese Model 1 (which has the PSU mounted to the Lid of the Console and connected via a Cable (rather than being sat on top of Pins on the Motherboard) and a White Japanese Model 2.

sharp mauve
waxen vortex
#

It depends on how many "Pins / Posts" the PSU has I believe as to which setting you need to have it at. Can't remember off the top of my head but one will have 5V and 3.3V and the other one I think has 9V?

#

There are 3 PSU form factors that Sega Saturn use, the service manuals apparently call them Type A, B, C.

Type A is only used in VA0 motherboards, it is hold onto the top of the case. Pinouts are gnd, gnd, 3.3v, 5v, (not connected), 9v.
Type B is used in VA1 to 5, it is the “longer” power supply, always 5 pins with pinouts being gnd, gnd, 3.3v, 5v, 9v.
Type C is used from VA6 to VA15, it is the “shorter” power supply. NTSC machines have 4 pins: gnd, gnd, 5v, 5v. PAL machines use 5 pins: gnd, gnd, 5v, 5v, 9/12v.

This explains it 🙂

Major update to the Saturn curated list

burnt matrix
#

Sorry that took so long!

dire tree
#

for the full list check the "SEGA Saturn Collection" and the "PSX Vs. Saturn?" tabs on the bottom. Because the PSX Vs. Saturn is a bunch of games on both platforms that I don't know which is better, although some are near identical.

#

The games on PSX that are known to be better on Saturn are on the "SEGA Saturn Collection" tab

#

also there are non-redump prototype and hombrew tabs

#

Some unreleased prototypes for platforms never make it to redump sets... and redump doesn't do homebrew at all.

#

if we figure out games better on PSX or Saturn on the "PSX Vs. Saturn?" tab for which platform is better, they get moved to another tab

polar geode
#

Salamander Deluxe Pack is pretty much equal on PSX

Capcom Generations 1-5 are better on PSX, except for Ghouls n Ghosts specifically

dire tree
#

Capcom Generations is in the Arcade tab since those are the best versions, right?

#

or do the consoles offer something different?

#

if arcade and neogeo makes the console versions irrelevant I put them in the arcade core tab

polar geode
#

There are some music track arrangements for Capcom Generation 1-5. Volume 5 specifically (Street Fighter 2) has full arranged soundtrack optional

dire tree

how come its better on psx?

its a number printed on the disc

its irrelevant

only Revision matters

high bramble
#

Fair enough. I'm not going to lose sleep over it. Was just curious what the determining factors were. 🙂

quaint dove
#

Why did nobody come to my house and tell me how good this core had gotten?

#

Fun fact. Marvel Superheroes had restored animation frames with the 1MB cart, and while the 4MB cart worked it caused even more slowdown for the already slowdown plagued game.

polar geode
#

It had a 3MB option IIRC

quaint dove

As in base 2MB + 1MB cart?

polar geode

Weirdly no

1MB for a 1MB cart, and 3 with a 4MB

I’m confused as to what that 3MB mode would be in addition to 1MB mode? There’s a 1MB ram cart and a 4MB ram cart.

dire tree
#

well those have alien technology called "Mega Tech"

quaint dove
#

I’d think 3MB is 2MB + 1MB cart but then what is 1MB?

dire tree
#

for marvel?

quaint dove
#

Yeah. MSH came out before the 4MB cart and I don’t think it had extra frames when using it - just extra slowdown. I used to own a pile of SNK/Capcom games and both RAM carts.

dire tree
#

Marvel Super Heroes... just has Japan, Europe, and USA discs. They don't specify Ram. As for menu options not sure

quaint dove
#

The RAM carts worked on the US version. That’s how I played it.

dire tree
#

but all 3 discs should be teh same in terms of Ram functionality

#

or one would have a revision or something

quaint dove
#

Maybe it did have extra frames on the 4MB but I never used it because it slowed down so much

dire tree
#

they are likely all 4MB

#

unless its only for a certain region

#

if one region is better ill give it priority if you know

#

but its something requiring research to find out

#

I give USA priority unless Japan is better for some reason (extra content, etc.)

#

but its not like I am deep researching every single game

#

so lets try this one now

#

oh this is just arcade

#

this site has no marvel for saturn so that means all 3 regions are likely identical

#

with no revisions or even M inner-ring disc stamp versions

#

so now we check whats up with ram carts

#

When I played it, I used a US game, on US console, and the 4MB ram cart that comes with the Xmen Vs. SF JP import. I experienced heavy slowdown after the first few matches. I don't have an official 1MB cart available to test this.

#

oh wait... this is the wrong game he is talkin about

#

oh nevermind he means the cart that comes with xmen vs sf

quaint dove
#

That thread is reminding me now… I kept my 1MB cart even after getting the 4MB not just because 4MB caused slowdown in MSH but it simply didn’t work in Samurai Spirits 4.

dire tree
#

I know there are issues with more than one game with what Ram cart you are using 1mb vs 4mb

#

I can add a note to help with that for the core if we get accurate info

quaint dove
#

Then you got your lonely KOF95 ROM cart in the corner that never gets used because your cartridge port is getting flaky and you don’t want to make it hard to play XvSF.

dire tree
#

I wanna say king of fighters had an issue too

#

iirc

#

The Official RAM Cart that SHOULD be used with Capcom RAM compatible games is the 4MB RAM cart (which is translucent in appearance). For use with games such as XMvsSFighter & MSHvsSFighter, VSaviour, D&Dragons etc. The 4MB RAM Cart can be used with SNK's titles (that use the 1MB RAM cart), however, it is NOT compatible with all of them and causes graphical corruption and unexpected errors in some instances (SS3 & RB1 immediately spring to mind).```
quaint dove
#

Except - MSH worked with the 1MB cart because it came out before the 4MB.

#

It’s all so weird and janky.

dire tree
#
happens to be a bit of an obscurity really, when it comes to the use of RAM. Not only because it appears to affect the game in a negative way, but because the game was never officially announced to support Capcoms 4MB RAM cart.

The game was never bundled with a RAM cart pack, unlike it's successors and it makes no reference to the use of RAM as an option in any of the manuals (JP, US or PAL... the latter 2 regions for more obvious reasons). Not only that but the game has been designed to recognise ONLY 3MB of RAM as opposed to Capcoms, seemingly standard, 4MB offering via their OWN cart.

The other thing that is seemingly unique is that Marvel Super Heroes is the only title that ALLOWS the user to make a choice as to whether to run the game with OR without RAM - unlike ALL other titles that force you into having to use RAM to run the game properly. It all comes across as a bit hap-hazard imo ALTHOUGH I do applaud the concept (a seemingly flawed one!) whereby the user was GIVEN a choice of whether to use a RAM cart or not.

SO, ON THE WHOLE...
MSH is a bit of an anomaly, in that it supports the use of RAM but was never officially bundled by Capcom with their own RAM cart.

Another strange occurrence (as shown in an earlier video link, a page or two back) is that MSH, somehow, also recognises the input of SNK's own 1MB RAM cart! Although, I can't remember how well it functions under its usage.```
quaint dove
#

Interestingly the 4MB option in the core doesn’t cause slowdown in MSH I’m guessing the real 4MB was slower and he didn’t bother implementing that difference.

dire tree
#

1) The usage of RAM in MSH doesn't ACTUALLY exist
2) 3MB of RAM was a guessed amount of what size their up and coming RAM cart would support
3) that, in actual fact, inserting a RAM cart actually does F*CK ALL and perhaps only 'activates' the in-games extra animation feature but doesn't actually support it with the RAM it needs, thus why it's so slow and unoptimised under extra RAM mode.

These points would perhaps explain why MSH will run under 1MB > 3MB when indeed, it shouldn't. I reckon that there could be ZERO RAM on the cart and, if the Saturn recognised the connected ZERO RAM cart as RAM in general (although there's none actually there!) that MSH would still run with the extra animation, to the games detriment.```
#

looks like marvel super heroes is indeed an anomaly situation

polar geode
#

Cyberbots is in the same boat

dire tree
#
- it also had no ram cart pack-in version
- it also supported the 1MB cart
- it also had a 3MB MODE option in the options
Cyberbots had no slowdown from what I remember. It also had MUCH better quality sound.

Both MSH (JP) and Cyberbots also clearly state that they can take advantage of the RAM cartridge on their covers.```
#

im just pasting replies im reading

#

personally I have no idea

#

still not sure what to put in the Notes on the list

#

if anything is even needed

quaint dove
#

So MSH has no 1MB option in its menu. It has 3M RAM mode on or off. So it definitely just means 2MB + 1MB.

#

What notes are you adding?

dire tree
#

for this game, no idea

#

I dont see the point in even playing it when we have the arcade core

unless it has extra c ontent or something

quaint dove
#

Is this a list of “best version” of games across platforms on MiSTer?

#

That you’re working on?

#

Because that’ll need lots of notes. Games that have more content and are more “fun” on home ports but have inaccuracies from arcade so they’re not used competitively.

#

See: DoDonPachi, Street Fighter Alpha 3, etc.

polar geode

#

“You want scaling or cropping? Hey we’ll even add scrolling!”

dire tree

quaint dove
#

And I like how Donpachi has options for both “tv” and “rgb tv” where rgb tv is scaled a bit smaller because presumably you can still make out the fine details only over rgb.

polar geode
#

There have been a few music hacks for Saturn arcade ports. Notably Batsugun has the new steam release's arranged tracks, and I did a hack for Darius II that adds the PC Engine CD arranged music

dire tree
#

i can add those to the arcade tab notes

#

send a link to the hacks

#

without the game, if available

#

I cant put links to actual game downloads, just hacks

#

and yes the whole list and all tabs are based on saturn

polar geode
#

There arent patches for Batsugun or Darius II, but if there were it would still contain copyrighted music to patch in so there wouldnt be a point

dire tree
#

alright

#

welll i could just mention they exist

#

if they do

polar geode
#

They definitely exist probably maybe in a link in my discord profile

quaint dove
#

For later note - Gradius/Salamander deluxe pack are better on PS1 than Saturn because Saturn can’t do 256px wide mode so it runs the arcade games with wrong aspect ratios.

dire tree
#

alright

quaint dove
polar geode
#

Someone else was saying there were further issues with Parodius and Twinbee

#

I dont know about Gradius Deluxe Pack, but I'd imagine the resolution issues are there too

quaint dove
#

They are

dire tree
#

i think there are quite a few wrong aspect ratio on saturn

quaint dove
#

Was playing it last night

dire tree
#

i noticed from screenshots

quaint dove
#

It’s the same 256px curse that hit SOTN with the ugly hammer on Saturn.

dire tree
#

however, we must take into account if there are other issues on psx and weight them against that

quaint dove
#

As in: the Saturn can’t do it so either you stretch it to 320 or you pillarbox it.

dire tree
#

for example if a game on psx has proper aspect ratio, but runs and sounds worse than saturn.... saturn is still probably better

quaint dove
#

Gradius/Salamander at least don’t have that issue. They’re identical other than aspect ratio.

dire tree
#

id say performance and latency is the top 2 priorities

#

audio could be more important than slightly off aspect ratio too depending on severity

quaint dove
#

Vampire Savior is another interesting one. It’s technically a more complete package on Saturn than Arcade but it also has port inaccuracies that make people stick with Arcade for competition.

#

So if you’re playing for fun pick Saturn if you’re running a tournament pick Arcade.

#

I think most people would prefer Saturn version because if they play for tourneys they already know.

#

I probably should just use notes and put everything on all lists that the game exists for

"It's how you play the game."
The Saturn was a mixed bag for Sega. It was actually their most successful console in Japan; not a monster hit like the PlayStation, but it beat the Nintendo 64 by a hair there. Consequently, it amassed a very respectable game library, full of unique, high-quality titles. On the other hand, it was a total commercial...
