Come only as far as the Saturn boot logo right now. No game booting

tidal raptor
#

reminds me that back in the day I had played MK3 on snes and PS1, and it was so wild to see the ps1 just hard stop for a while to load on shang tsung transformations lol the snes version was very compromised but at least it didn't have that glaring issue

ancient surge
#

Yes the latest stable build now supports it. Just click on the update_all script and it should automatically download.

You might need to do it more than once, since update_all is fickle when it comes to downloading the MiSTer main files.

tawny forge
#

It's probably the same as other 8bitdo USB BT receivers

vernal fiber
#

Can anyone help me out. I got a couple game files loaded that others have working. Added the bios. Names it boot.rom. And I get to this screen. Says checking disc. Shows tracks. But doesn’t play.

#

make sure the region is set to the same as the game

japan/usa/eur etc

in the osd

then reset the core

ancient surge
#

One weird thing I noticed with the regional thing is that some games still boot, despite not being the right region.

Like for some reason my NA version of The Legend of Oasis can boot when it's set to Japan.

I don't know if it's a bug or some games lack region locking.

vernal fiber
#

@verbal pollen I tried all of them. Same thing. Treats it like a audio cd or something.

#

@alpine slate I’m having what sounds like the same issue you had where it goes to the checking disc screen. Then loads it as tracks and never starts the game. Did you figure yours out ?

daytona still not work? I's just about the only game I play on my saturn

burnt matrix
#

I have dual ram tho so maybe that’s it?

dawn moth

Single ram, daytona worked kinda several versions ago, but now it doesn't. Championship edition locks up at the "Daytona USA is a trademark of the International Speedway Corporation..." screen

sudden tusk
#

Championship edition works just fine

subtle tusk
#

Daytona used to load for me but then freeze when I tried to start a game, now it doesn't load at all. Dual RAM.

In fact, a lot of stuff that used to work for me doesn't anymore. I probably need to try a different BIOS

Championship Edition boots for me, but it's really unstable.

ivory kindle
drifting frigate
#

It's working OK-ish for me. Tons of audio and polygon bugs, but I was able to shame myself with a terrible outing all the way through all laps. I'm on CIFS shares for my images. Dual RAM.

#

CE locks at the Daytona trademark screen though.

#

And I dunno if it matters, but that was Saturn Mode.

ivory kindle
#

CE works fine here, passes the rainbow screen no problem

#

the rainbow trademark screen

#

ya, some sound issues for sure but CE is good

drifting frigate
#

Oh, I'm on the same side as you. Mine is working. CE works off and on (sometimes it hangs at the Daytona trademark screen, sometimes it doesn't).

#

@subtle tusk what does your RAM test at? I've got pretty solid 150MHz.

polar geode
#

How does one test their RAM?

drifting frigate
#

In Utility from the main mister menu there's a RAM test.

subtle tusk
#

Hmmm I haven't tested mine in a while. I have a good 128MB stick and a not great 32MB that I got from a kit off Amazon. That might be part of my problem.

#

But that wouldn't necessarily explain why my experience has gotten worse over time, unless newer cores are more sensitive to timing than older ones.

polar geode
#

This has a rather bare bones looking display..

#

I think mine is 144

drifting frigate
drifting frigate
polar geode

My RAM is old, so maybe thats why its testing low

drifting frigate
#

And again, I'm using CIFS which tests closer to 50mbps transfer speed versus the USB 2 20ish of SD/USB.

subtle tusk
#

My RAM only tests at 143 so it's not that great after all.

polar geode

Mine dropped to that too

Man... can't wait until D and Enemy Zero work...

Kenjo eno was dope af.... so off the wall..and the worst voice acting

I love the D

#

Series.... D Series

drifting frigate
#

Look, you said what you said...

#

I'm testing out D right now. The floor is very high, so 'black' is like 5 stops below neutral gray. So it looks washed out.

#

But it's working great.

#

You can see Enemy Zero doesn't have the same issue with the raised floor. It looks much better in the border.

#

But no sound so far.

#

Oh, I see what you mean. Disc swapping.

#

@errant prawn Do you know if D has that washed out border on real hardware? It's the only game I've run into with it. And I've tested...way too many games. I'm guessing it's probably the same on original HW.

errant prawn
drifting frigate
#

See how the border around the FMV area isn't black, as it is in the next Warp game?

#

It's a gray.

#

Probably didn't matter too much on old CRTs though, so it's likely just in the game.

errant prawn
#

Ohhhh that grayness around the border

#

Let me get done with some video editing and I'll toss it on before bed

#

Is this near beginning?

#

Or the whole game?

#

And we're talking D right?

drifting frigate
#

The whole game so far.

#

Yeah, D.

#

Enemy seems fine.

errant prawn
#

Kk... I'll get back to you in like 40

drifting frigate
#

Sweet! Going the extra mile! I've never played it before but it seems like a much more advanced 7th Guest style experience. And I did very much like 7th Guest.

errant prawn
#

It's pretty easy...especially if you watch the intro video..a lot of the clues of how to solve the puzzles are in there

But...it's just.. kenji eno.... I wish he was still around, he made games that were bad in all the right ways

#

I called him the Tommy waisu of video games...

But from what I read, D was actually ground breaking for the time...but if I was 12 playing that...I'd be pissed, plus you HAVE to beat it in 2 hours

errant prawn
#

No problem...thanks for testing all or most games lol

drifting frigate
#

Oh, I'm so far off the pace for 'all.' But I've been running through a bunch. Though I got to play a bunch of Princess Crown today, so it's worth it. Sadly, Shining Force III was just getting good when it crapped out after the first transition out of the close up battle mode. (Also, there are some major sprite issues in SFIII). Probably for the best, or I'd still be playing.

I really really dug Albert Odyssey when I tested it. Sadly, no saves means I'll just have to have another fun hour when they're finally supported. I just wish there was a De-Worked version because Victor Ireland is terrible, his dialog is bad and he should feel bad.

burnt matrix
#

lol, I appreciate his company bringing those games over but yeah, I don’t want him ever balance tuning a game

drifting frigate
#

Agreed and it did do a TON for getting imports and translations officially as generations continued. But JFC, his dialog is gross. And bad. And not true to the original at all. And yeah, the balance thing is bonkers. Were people RENTING these games? I never even saw Lunar for rent when I was a kid.

Lunar on SegaCD is such a horrible slog. Deworked is a much better experience for every title they've done it to so far.

polar geode
#

Working Designs? A friend of mine used to work for them lol

drifting frigate

Yeah. So many dated jokes. There's a valley girl fairy in Albert Odyssey and every single female character wants to bone Pike, the MC, in a non-subtle, awful way. Ireland's translations are infamous for being over the top on the creep factor.

polar geode

I guess we should feel happy those games got translations at all, obscure as some of them were

#

Yep. It do.

drifting frigate
#

Well, got a full hour into it. They only changed the difficulty on MKR. Not the dialog. Too much voice, I'm guessing. But it's the least Working Designs dialog of any WD game. So it's not SO bad. Pretty great little game.

Besides, back then a lot of games were JP only because "westerns are not interested in JRPGs", it was pretty much WD and nobody else.

#

So shitting on the guys that brought Lunar, Albert Odyssey and several others to the West, is not a nice move.

burnt matrix
#

I don’t really mind the translations since they’re a product of their time but if I were a dev, I’d be pretty insulted having my game or script tampered with in such an infantile way. Same with game balancing. Their team had no clue how to make a game, let alone properly balance it.

sudden tusk
#

I don’t think anyone who bought one of these games back in the day had any idea that they were “changed” often for the worse .. they just wanted a slice of what Japan was having

the amount of crap you got with lunar was a lot and high quality

I do prefer the "Unworking Design" patches though, simply because it fixes my biggest complaint with them artificially inflating the difficulty of games.

And I gave them enough money. I'll keep my opinions.

#

I still have my punching Galeon puppet in the box. Lunar. MKR (the stickers are long gone).

turbid crescent
#

That's the thing, if it wasn't for their work, a lot of us wouldn't get to know great games until a team decides to translate it. And that effort takes several years most of the time.

drifting frigate
#

I agree

#

But I'm still going to critique the content.

turbid crescent
#

And as I said, I do welcome the challenge, heck I finished Phantasy Star 2 without a guide back then. It was tough, makes every WD game feels like a cake walk.

drifting frigate
#

The xp drop in Lunar SS was insane. The grinding was part of why people didn't play it.

#

It's not hard. It's tedious.

#

PS2 wasn't even that bad. PS1 was closer, but even then. They also bumped the encounter rate. I'm loving the patches though.

#

They are a welcome choice to have

pearl harbor
#

Agreed that the Working Designs issues are more problematic in retrospect. At the time, I had absolutely no idea that they made gameplay adjustments to the games and loved their releases. I still have my Lunar 1 and 2 PS1 releases, Arc the Lad Collection, and Growlanser Generations on PS2. Along with the PS1 games' strategy guides, which were pretty awesome at the time.

drifting frigate
#

My brother is putting our old MKR up for sale soon. The Saturn was his so I didn't get to play it much. I've played it more on the core. It's really good. Even as is.

#

I'm sure the license drove a lot of the decisions.

sharp comet
#

they tried to use 90's slang which was common with young men at the time and hasn't aged well

turbid crescent
#

About the humor, it was the 90's and I still welcome this kind of humor to this day. People are way too harsh to criticize anything and everything, like it needs to cater to every person on the planet. A lot of things may not be for you, but nowadays people actively try to either cancel or shame people for enjoying it.

You'll never see me trying to cancel "cooking mama" but things like "We need to be better" on a fucking god of war game, or how people freaked about a scene in Persona 5. Things like this are what makes me go through so many hoops to buy a western game nowadays.

pearl harbor
#

But yeah, when going back today to play them, the problems are more obvious. I played through Popful Mail recently and was taken aback when she called someone "re#*$%ed" in the game. marioohno

Is it possible that it’s easier to do accurate translation nowadays with the internet being what it is now compared to then?

#

I’m so glad for un-WD versions but yeah I feel like the hate was not there back then, people were just grateful to have a publisher doing stateside releases of these games

turbid crescent
#

This is changing a bit on games, because the industry there is at a weird spot lately. Some studios get that it's the japanese touch that makes it interesting, not all of them are going this route, sadly.

#

Didn't work for capcom in the early 2000's, it won't work now.

drifting frigate
# turbid crescent Still, it was either this or no game at all, simple point.

No, it's not a "simple point." It's just history and history is not immune from critique. Being part of an underestimated group watching a thing I enjoyed be coopted by a sales team's opinion is where I sat. And that's where my viewpoint sits. There's not really a way to know how sales would have gone with less edgelord translations. But tons of people know Chrono Trigger in the US and it didn't make upskirt jokes about harpy teen girls.

#

So, play them as they were released. I'm just happy more options to NOT do that exist and I enjoy the WD releases less. Personally.

turbid crescent
#

Really interesting topic, though. Sadly I don't think people will be comfortable to go through it.

drifting frigate
#

I just noticed your avatar, btw, and outside of this convo, I literally started playing SH2010 for the first time last night! What a trip....Was not expecting Jim Cummings. It's wild.

turbid crescent

It's not a great game, solid 6, I just have a thing for the franchise.

drifting frigate

I didn't get very far, but I agree. Gore over substance. Still, it's an experience so far.

#

Rick's facial hair guest starred on Laguna Beach for a season.

turbid crescent

The metal and dismemberment can only carry it so far. Very 90's game though, you can collect some "pics" of your girlfriend and unlock not so great emulated versions of the 3 OG games.

I just did a playthrough of Nekketsu Oyako on PS1. The Saturn core is already so much more playable. There's so much slowdown on the PS1 version. You give up transparencies for dithered, but it's just way more responsive on Saturn...It's probably the best whale-based level in any game [cetacean needed]

drifting frigate
#

OK, there's a lot of slowdown on the Saturn in the whale level, but it feels more responsive to input during the slowdown. It's still got that issue where pickups juggle so you can get stuck bending over to swap knives instead of throwing punches. That's in both versions. What a weird, neat game.

open swan
unkempt oar
#

I mean yeah there was some humor but they added a lot and also mutilated what was there. I used to buy their games back then. I appreciate that they brought them over. But they also did too much tinkering with the code and went too far with the dialogue. I've always felt this way. So did many people back then.

Police Quest had it a bit, but for the most part if you read the training stuff for each mission it was ...kinda straight forward. There were times it was just a guess though. Like the homeless guy in the river.

tidal raptor
#

1995 point and click adventure, I'd be surprised if it didn't have some moon logic

#

also since it's a japan only console port of a point and click, I think you're probably gonna get about the same for quality on each console. Haven't tried the saturn version, but PS1 version seemed alright. The cursor speed is quite slow by default, you can speed it up a little in the options though

drifting frigate

The Tenchi game addressed by a specific fix is actually quite good. Puyo-esque, but with a few major gameplay differences. And the Ryou-Oki blocks are the angriest bunnies you've ever seen. Which is great. If I was a ship that had to eat lettuce I'd be pissed, too.

Daytona works for me on dual ram. Some exploding polygons in the intro but plays well

So I guess Daytona depends on the build?

I was using the dual RAM build and it booted up like normal, but I don't know about the single RAM build.

came here cause i was having probs with the core, forgive me if this isn't the place. i'm using virtua fighter 2 for my test game and the core seems to crash to black screen on the sega logo screen every time. not sure what i'm doing wrong, followed guides to the letter

naive whale
dawn moth
slate karma

Chances are you have a slower speed RAM, since the updates as of a month or two ago only SDRAM that gets higher timings (~145MHz+ I believe) works consistently well. Mine is only 141MHz and hardly boots anything. My personal test is to boot Sega Rally, which used to work a few months ago but now only gets a white screen. Some people with faster SDRAM can boot the game fine.

dawn moth
#

I get white screens on sega rally and sega touring car

#

sega rally worked great a few versions ago

rich grotto
#

thanks for the input, tried a couple more games to see what's up and yeah i too white-screen for sega rally

#

What game do you feel had the biggest change?

drifting frigate
#

I don't know what the Tenchi puyo game was like in the last build since I just tried it for the first time, but it feels perfect.

#

So if it wasn't working right, that's a huge improvement. The 3D elements of Sonic Jam are fixed, so it looks great.

old pasture

I'm on my way home, so I'm gonna update the core and try out a few things

halcyon mica
#

Interesting, so it could work with mine as well. Just redownloaded the redump cd image, and 1.01 japanese bios, but still no luck. Other games start fine, but Cotton 2 simply goes from the Sega logo to black screen.

#

same with the english patched bin/cue, hm

mortal mist
#

I understand that everyone would like to play their favorite Saturn games, it's fun to see how such games work, which ones launch, etc.

#

But here everything changes so dynamically , that there is nothing to suggest the results of other people, for me also once something works and once not.

halcyon mica
#

I was not really aware that the variance between installations was so large

#

was hoping I was doing something wrong, as the game has been noted to run for a long time

mortal mist
#

This list of games was intended only for information on which games run and which do not, at the moment there is so much disparate information that I do not see the point of suggesting it

#

I think that when the core is more stable in many aspects, such a list will make sense

halcyon mica
#

maybe someone could un-pin the list then?

mortal mist
#

Or add information about this problem before anyone starts suggesting results from this sheet

#

With the previous core works for me Sega Rally , with the current one does not work, this will probably change from time to time. Soon someone will write , that it works, neverendig story 😉

#

But I'm aware that it's an alpha from the very beginning, I don't see this as a problem

mortal mist
#

That's right 🙂
