Depending on your kids age, it's a nice start, quite simple mechanics and the story is something else. Great characters too...

plush jetty
turbid crescent
#

I know, just got nostalgic thinking about it. Such great games.

#

I can see a 7 years old enjoying it.

#

but I think the game is 13+

#

not sure...

plush jetty
#

Only got into Saturn way later when my brother and I went in on a bit eBay lot

turbid crescent
#

Snatcher spoiled Policenauts to me. I was expecting so much more from Policenauts.

plush jetty
#

Always been meaning to play through that translation

Regarding Fenrir and multiple disc games:

#

Ced is the Fenrir developer. Make of it what you will. I am still waiting on the Duo to arrive, so I cannot attest to anything myself.

#

By the way, Reddit is like, the land of the [deleted].

#

Also, my sympathies for the people out there who are still burning CD-Rs. Definitely do not miss that one bit.

edgy hollow
#

wasa doing that like 2 weeks ago

#

my backup saturn was like, hehehe i stopped pressing the spin button for 2 seconds to kick you out

wooden dew
#

On Insert Credit pod they said Hydlide was the godfather of demon's souls so now I need to play it.

#

But also said it wasn't very good

edgy hollow
#

So tate people, what devices do you use that's not a CRT?

drifting frigate
#

That Sega Lord X video going to have folks flipping their TVs.

#

I specifically have a small portable monitor for playing tate games. But once I recap my second BVM, it's just going to stay in that orientation.

quaint dove
#

My iPad screen monitor is beautiful and TATEs perfectly.

lavish wadi
#

Man.. the Samsung Sero would be an awesome MiSTer display if it were OLED! Best of both worlds. Hopefully it becomes reality!

edgy hollow
#

the ipad monitor is too small though. Ironically it looks the best for retrotink 5x's experimental mode

#

My cintiq works (without sound) but the screen isn't great... probably because of the screen protector

#

I might start looking for a sero if it's cheap now since it'sconsidered discontinued

#

now to somehow convert it into a mirror and get rid of my full body mirror

#

to have space

#

lol

acoustic sable
#

I do love how well it demonstrates that the people freaking out about it never played the games 😄

visual grove
#

If the internet isn’t for baseless outrage, what is it for?

#

Oh shit just made myself think of what must now be a very ancient meme. The WOW “internet is for porn” thing

turbid crescent
# wraith echo

Do you have the capability of changing the disc mid game?
No?
So no disc swap.

It isn't rocket science.

visual grove
#

Time for some enterprising YouTuber to start up a “the memeing historian” channel

turbid crescent
#

The game saving prior to the disc change so you can reset the console and load the next disc IS NOT a disc swap.

#

Phoebe/Rhea implementation you have a dedicated physical button to change the disc. Open the lid and do it like you would with a CD.
That is disc swap.

edgy hollow
#

Whatever happened to that ode anyway?

#

Like it's mode, satiator or fenrir nowadays

#

Was testing out my splitter + long hdmi cable and signal was stable. Must fight urge to buy vertical tv

edgy hollow

turbid crescent
edgy hollow

just glad that there are emulators for cases like that if I ever play those games

turbid crescent
edgy hollow

I mean, it's better than the n64 for sure

acoustic sable
#

As we covered last night, turns out all multi disk games do save between disks. Some of them don’t tell you that they have.

turbid crescent
wraith echo
#

Oh my, we have a problem here if this still hasn't been put to rest.

acoustic sable
#

It’s now definitely a myth.

edgy hollow
#

Question, are tate mode games clockwise or counter clockwise rotated from landscape in general?

#

Saw the Sero irl, it's so expensive lol, was looking at bigger tv + rotating wheel stand (half the price). Problem is screen sharing will not work correctly

sharp comet
#

depends how it was originally made

#

it can be either

glass rain
#

Most but not all have the image rotated CW

edgy hollow
#

Yeah sonic wings is ccw

#

Anyway fixed my cintiq and will just use it

sudden tusk
#

Looks edible lol

visual grove
#

The Saturn tate mode games rotate CW? That’s weird since most arcade was CCW at the time

drifting frigate
#

The Taito shooters do, but I'm not sure about others. Sounds like Sonic doesn't.

glass rain
#

Cave shooters are all cw

#

Psikyo too

#

I mean the image is rotated CW, not the tube

plush jetty
drifting frigate
#

Yeah, the tube rotation would be ccw for the Taito games. It's 'rotated' cw on a standard orientation. We're probably all using different definitions, hehe. But yes, tube rotation is more clear and tube rotation for tha Taito games I've tried would be CCW.

plush jetty
visual grove
#

Oh the image rotated, durr

#

Thought he meant how some of the games could be set tate and you rotate your tube. My bad

drifting frigate
#

Nah, nobody's bad. Hehe. It's wonky terminology but I think TWG has the right of it. It makes more sense in hindsight to me to discuss tube orientation rather than image. I need to get off my butt and recap my second BVM. But... ugh, they did not make it accessible. And hot snot everywhere. :/

Enjoy!

edgy hollow
#

Must be a chore if the game uses clockwise, that I'm starting to think, maybe lying down is easier

glass rain
#

A lot of vertical games let you flip the screen in the dip switches or service menu too. I can't think of any that I'd need to rotate the other way for

edgy hollow
#

Some games do CW while others do CCW but I guess if you dislike the minority, then I guess one way should be fine

edgy hollow
#

Is it a yes or a no for you?

#

Crt for reference

glass rain
#

😎👍

edgy hollow
#

Here i thought people hate stretching

acoustic sable
#

Aspect ratio abuse is always bad.

edgy hollow
#

Cintiq has large bezels too

edgy hollow
#

Stretching is just wrong usually

sudden tusk
#

They sit nice and flat on TATE! And look amazing even with just S video

glass rain
#

I actually like the way the JVC slightly tilts back 🙂

#

A bit worrisome when you're setting it in place tho, lol

edgy hollow
#

Wow so flat.

#

Didnt want to set the cintiq to vertical

soft valley
#

Has anyone explored whether or not the Saturn core can be used as a karaoke machine by loading CD+G bin/cue rips?

sharp comet
#

I think it's probably a bit too early to spend time exploring that

astral crane
sharp comet
#

you can attempt to use it however you want, but I think think if that's your use case you wont get very far at this point in time

clear condor
#

Mega CD and PCE CD may also get you there

sudden tusk
#

Where do I plug in the microphones.?

drifting frigate
#

@naive whale CIFS to the rescue again. But I don't know the button mapping, so forgive the AWFUL gameplay.

#

Virtua Cop loads reliably but the Beginner level locks up for some reason. Training, Medium, and Hard all work for me.

#

It didn't freeze, I just figured that was enough to show signs of life.

drifting frigate
#

Yeah. CDB shenanigans with some overhead for error handling maybe? But it's massively improved loading for me.

soft valley
sharp comet
#

probably, all the other ones are pretty mature

#

saturn is still pretty ramshackle

edgy hollow

Too bad we'll never get virtua cop 4 or even 3 in modern consoles.

I've seen a racing wheel compatible wth ps1 (ps1 style connector) and also ps2 (usb). Can't remember if it was from Logitech...

I have plenty of old wheels for arcade stuff but surprisingly not a modern one. What’s the current “good shit” wheel wise?

untold lintel

Logitech FFB protocol is the same across most (all?) of it's steering wheel devices. So the adapter can passthrough the data. Same thing the PCSX2 plugin does with logitech devices.

doesn't even require a physical switch, just hold the reset and watch the led change to indicate what region you're set to

Have we reached the limits of the de10 nano with the Saturn core? Is it technically possible to make it 100% stable with single ram?

drifting frigate
#

You can't make Saturn 100% stable with an actual Saturn.

tiny flare
#

there's some pretty solid evidence to suggest that a lot more can be done just by fixing the CD timings, see @drifting frigate's experiments above where a big pile of games that were unstable got fixed just by using fast CIFS instead of MiSTer's slow USB/SD card

MiSTer Addons

The DE10-nano is both an FPGA and an ARM computer, running Linux. Because of this, MiSTer benefits from all of the input/output flexibility of a modern computer. Note that the DE10-nano's USB PHY is USB 2.0 so there is no speed advantage using USB 3.0 devices.

I have read that some people have a problem with this device

I take it that those are just rca connectors used to pass rgb? For instance could I do this chain for my PVM with that device: MiSTer > Hdmi2vga > VGA to BNC > BNC to RCA > Picture adjuster > RCA to BNC > PVM?

Or maybe I’m missing something obvious 😂 I’m a total noob when it comes to CRT stuff, but my PVM has no horizontal position settings and I was looking at this box a while ago.

It's incredible how there are a lot of rally games on the PSX, yet no one comes even close to Sega Rally.

I hope that we should have a Stable or even an Unstable one with the Saturn CDD fixes and NeoCD support in the following weeks.

Whats the trick to load the 4mb cart games?

ripe valley
#

Options : DRAM 4MB on the core menu.

#

Only KOF95 and Ultraman need a special ROM card.
KOF96 only works with a 1MB DRAM card, corrupted graphics with a 4MB one.

Don't forget to reboot completely the core sometimes between games too.

Handy guide to Saturn expanded RAM games

Real Bout Fatal Fury [requires 1 MB; graphical glitches with 4 MB]
Samurai Shodown III: Blades of Blood [requires 1 MB; no issues caused by using 4 MB]
The King of Fighters '96 [requires 1 MB; graphical glitches with 4 MB]
Cyberbots: Fullmetal Madness [optionally uses 1 MB; no issues caused by using 4 MB]
Metal Slug [requires 1 MB; no issues caused by using 4 MB — some say there's more slowdown with 4 MB but that seems to be untrue]
Groove On Fight: Power Instinct 3 [requires 1 MB; no issues caused by using 4 MB]
Waku Waku 7 [requires 1 MB; no issues caused by using 4 MB]
Fighter's History Dynamite [requires 1 MB; no issues caused by using 4 MB]
Marvel Super Heroes [optionally uses 1 MB; no additional issues caused by using 4 MB — using any RAM expansion introduces slowdown]
Samurai Shodown IV: Amakusa's Revenge [requires 1 MB; graphical glitches with 4 MB]
X-Men vs. Street Fighter [requires 4 MB only]
Cotton 2: Magical Night Dreams [optionally uses 1 MB; no issues caused by using 4 MB]
Real Bout Fatal Fury Special [requires 1 MB; no issues caused by using 4 MB]
The King of Fighters '97 [requires 1 MB; no issues caused by using 4 MB]
Darkstalkers 3: Jedah's Damnation [requires 4 MB only]

Astra Superstars [optionally uses 1 MB; no issues caused by using 4 MB]
Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter [requires 4 MB only]
Pia Carrot e Youkoso!! 2 [optionally uses 1 MB; no issues caused by using 4 MB]
Noel 3 [optionally uses 1 MB; no issues caused by using 4 MB]
Dungeons & Dragons Collection [Shadows Over Mystara requires 4 MB only; Tower of Doom does not require expanded RAM at all]
Friends: Seishun no Kagayaki [optionally uses 1 MB; no issues caused by using 4 MB]
Street Fighter Alpha 3 [requires 4 MB only]
Final Fight Revenge [requires 4 MB only]

Rule of thumb is to use 1MB for the SNK games, and 4MB for the Capcom games

winter phoenix

#

Astra Super Stars supports both 1MB and 4MB carts, the games takes more time on first load with 4MB, the loads between matches are faster.

#

Cyberbots and Pocket fighter works with 4MB carts to, cybertots shows 3MB detected in options iirc.

winter phoenix
#

most games that require or optionally use the 1 MB RAM can also use the 4 MB RAM, they just probably won't make use of all the extra space.

ripe valley

X-Men - Children of the Atom - freezes on main menu with sound error code, no changes.

hot siren

has anythign changed in how to start games?
The new build doesnt allow me to start games anymore, old build works fine

winter phoenix
#

basically, using a 4 MB RAM should work for any game — except for the three that have graphical glitches because they were programmed in a weird way before the 4 MB cart was released and the programmer apparently thought there would only be a 1 MB cart.

I just do it manually:
Download the latest unstable and put it on the SD-card 🤷 (renamned to MiSTer replacing the original one/backing the old one up)

I use the update_psx script

remove the 'exit' from the script so that mister main gets updated
