#Performance Degradation in Latest Update (Videos Attached)

(This post is an addendum to the Nolt post here)

After playing on the latest update, I've noticed huge performance issues that did not exist just a few days ago. I'm having large persistent framedrops throughout the match and big drops on large hits and 'purple' screen effects. Additionally, two Forsburns on screen is a performing HORRIBLY, which was not a problem in the past.

The annotated video linked below should hopefully show it off. I know it might be hard to guage using a 60fps rendered video but the slowdowns are frequent and very noticeable. I play the game at over 200+ FPS so when the framerate drops significantly, it feels terrible. You should at least be able to notice the KO screen drops.

#

It's a little hard to tell because of the video rendering at 60fps, but the framerate got so bad in the 2nd video with all the smoke on screen

hardy bay
#

I notice it real bad on any kill screen

lone venture
#

I just played against Forsburn and having 3-4 patches of smoke makes the game completely unplayable. Was seeing hiccups in my other matches as well. Have not had issues on any previous patch since the change to DX12/shader caching.

#

Also, the game seems to freeze for like 3/4 of a second when it needs to pull up a crit screen

#

So yeah, basically exactly what you said

#

Here's some system info and the last game session log if it helps (affected all online matches a bit but the Forsburn was the last game)

proven forum
#

yeah this is the worst stuttering i've ever seen in the game

#

i've had the game drop probably 20 frames when a purple happens

me too, this fps drop is horrible. I have a 3080ti and never have any issues playing this game. Playing against orcane and as soon as he starts using bubbles my fps dies

stuck orchid
#

oh ok, not just me 😳

#

i was also really shocked because i have a 9800x3d and a 5070 and this game doesnt remotely push either of them

#

it's very odd because it's definitely not a graphics thing, i had 4 forsburns on screen in a local match just to stress test it and it didn't dip like that at all. but just going against ONE online makes the game really choppy when there's enough smoke on screen

lone venture
#

I noticed my rollback and delay frames were going crazy online while the game was stuttering, but my connection health (measured by continuous pings to my router and a google server) seemed completely fine. Makes me suspect either something that the servers/netcode is struggling to handle, or the local rollback calcuations.

#

I had played bot games before going online to grind some exp and didn't notice any issues in those

tired creek
#

+1 to this, 5800X and 9070XT, CachyOS

proper tide
#

Personally, I feel like this fps drops is amplified when playing on higher ping. I play from Japan to USW servers and orcane bubbles even before this patch frequently drops my fps, but on lower ping it doesnt really happen

hybrid slate
#

+1 higher ping does seem to make it worse as well which makes me think it's happening on rollbacks

rugged ingot
#

@potent garden is it ok to ping you regarding this? not sure if the team is aware

weary mirage
#

I second these problems. Online: Forsburn, purple screens and chaotic item matches have seen drastically worse performance for me as well

warm yarrow
#

+1 any performance drop on steam deck is very noticeable

#

We could not play on running rock wall on last night's stream

leaden shell
#

Despite of reverting some stuff (listed in the latest hotfix) I still get stutters that I never had before. Feels like the hotfix does nothing

steel marsh
#

Im running with a 13th gen i9 and a 4090gpu and im also getting these issues. Something is up for sure w the rollback and character articles I think

hybrid slate
#

The hotfix resolved the issue for me

regal owl
proper tide
#

i think its a case of rollback + higher ping, and something got screwed with the latest patch

rugged ingot
#

No dev has commented on anything yet :(

half harbor
#

same thing for me

proven forum
#

yeah i'm still getting really big stutters during gameplay

#

didn't happen before midmonth

rigid swan
#

Same. Also not sure if related but I feel like my inputs are getting eaten so much

#

I mashed up special off stage as kragg at least ten times to punish someone and I just fell to my death, 10ms

potent garden

we're monitoring the situation

weary mirage
#

thank you for letting us know!

placid pewter
#

does deleting the shader cache resolve this issue?

hardy bay
#

I do it every patch or every time I update drivers

#
cd /home/<user>/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/2217000/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local/Rivals2/Saved && rm *.upipelinecache *.ushaderprecache

if you're on linux

#

My issues have resolved since they cropped up previously

placid pewter
#

thanks. Not on linux, but the game runs a lot more smoothly now after deledting the shader cache

modern thistle
# rigid swan Same. Also not sure if related but I feel like my inputs are getting eaten so mu...

have had this happen as well

I've been experiencing a lot of issues this patch as well with frame drops that I'm not sure are related. I used to play this game at 4K 240fps with my 7900xtx a few months ago with very few frame drops. Now I had to cap the FPS to 120 just to prevent stutters and spikes, and even then I still experience them pretty often. Was in training mode and after throw clashing with La Reina's forward special, my FPS dipped to half. Couldn't replicate that either.

Lingering effects on the screen definitely exacerbate it. Magma puddles, ice paths, fors smoke, and even the leaves that drop in Aetherial Forest. Some stages are performing better than others, and I'm at my wit's end with what to do. I've basically done everything on my side I can think to do (shader cache deletion, modified pretty much all ingame settings (some helped, but nothing fixed the random frame drops), uninstall/reinstall, potato mod (helped but didn't fix), frame gen (didn't help, made it worse lol), graphics drivers DDU -> reinstall, monitor firmware updates, etc.)

#

would be curious what resolution everyone is playing on lol

lone venture
#

IDK if this thread is the best place for it, because when it was originally made, there was a severe and immediately noticeable problem with onscreen effects on an entirely different patch. But I have been seeing a lot of hiccups on this patch where the game freezes for a split second and ended up turning all of my graphics settings way down.

modern thistle
lone venture
hardy bay
#

I'm at some weird detected resolution (2293x1289, no idea why it only lets me choose this) on a 4070Ti Super and also noticing the same random frame drop/stutters again. They'd gone away a patch or two ago

modern thistle
#

Reinstall the game and see if the issues go away temporarily

hardy bay
#

I wipe the shader cache almost daily at this point heh

lone venture
#

Wiping the shader cache will increase stuttering for a while, though

hardy bay
#

Usually fixes it for me, but I'm also on cachy so might be a different issue

modern thistle
#

this is still an issue as of recent patch

modern thistle
#

i'm having a lot of issues with Forsburn smoke on non-training mode stages causing significant frame drops; 4k smoke causes a choke

spice yarrow
#

Been having a lot of issues in general with performance when trying to boot from a new laptop computer, noticing a lot of other people potentially having issues as well especially today

#

for reference it's a ryzen 9 hx cpu and the gpu is a nvidia rtx 5070, although I've seen that people with an amd gpu have also been having issues

#

main thing I've noticed in terms of problems, especially today:
• Dx11 has issues booting in general from what it seems
• Shader cache screen (precompiling/warming) usually gets only 1 fps (if even)
• Cpu and maybe even memory as well spiking heavily in the shader cache screen, probably causing the very low fps
• Menus in general for a while seem heavily unoptimized, to the point of running worse than in the gameplay itself.

#

As for that last point: main contenders are the css and stage select

#

Also controller latency is a lot worse

#

going to test it on my asus rog xbox ally x just to see if the computer itself is a factor

#

in terms of booting it up normally with data from playing on it before, seems completely fine, not even any lag spikes

#

makes me wonder if the initial bootup sequence might be the problem

#

gonna check if it's like a setting on steam itself cause I did have the precaching stuff enabled on steam already

#

in the handheld, but probably not the laptop

#

Still noticing heavily varying framedrops / lag and also gpu usage is varying a lot

#

varying between around the 30's to close to 100%

#

so enabling the vulkan shaders part of steam did help, although obviously something's off with the fps especially since it seems like nothing was really cached at all

#

Gotta be that I think

modern thistle
#

The stages feel like the biggest offenders, but I still can't get the game to stop randomly stuttering

#

Even if I maintain a steady 300 fps otherwise

spice yarrow
#

exactly what's happening here

#

iirc last night I could get like 360 or so fps

modern thistle
#

If I deploy Forsburn smoke my fps drops by like 20%

#

Particularly if I coat the stage

modern thistle
#

But I think it's just a problem with the game that seems to have gotten worse post-item patch

#

And I don't think there's anything to do but wait until they fix it

spice yarrow
#

Might actually be the shaders for the stages

#

In terms of warming them and all that

modern thistle
#

Those combined are absolutely killing performance

spice yarrow
#

Yeah

#

Also considering what could be causing the menus to be pretty bad in performance when going into like the css amongst other things

#

iirc the worst ones for that are the css and stage select

spice yarrow
#

Gonna try putting stuff on high and seeing what happens

#

meshes on high compared to low or medium doesn't seem to be helping at all

#

might be making it worse

#

and iirc I also tried turning off anti aliasing

#

Idk if this would have to do with it at all but I'm wondering if like steam overlay is a problem

modern thistle
#

I used to run the game in 4k 240 fps no problem before the slade patch and now I can't get through a session without experiencing micro stutters, frame drops on certain stages, etc.

spice yarrow
#

Yeah

modern thistle
#

/certain characters apparently too with terrain altering effects

#

the critical hit / death effects too cause significant frame drops when they appear

spice yarrow
#

is the computer's gpu nvidia or something else?

modern thistle
#

AMD 7900 XTX

spice yarrow
#

Hmm

#

So the gpus themselves aren't the issue

#

It literally is just something wrong with the game itself

#

May want to check like gpu and cpu usage as well during that with task manager

#

I did notice with my laptop that the battery drains QUICK ingame

modern thistle
#

i've been monitoring with WTools

#

nothing really out of the ordinary

spice yarrow
#

for me it'll say like gpu usage goes up to like 100 and spikes down to 30 or 40 or something

#

so it's varying a lot

#

So for you it was the slade patch, for me it would've been like the midmonth or the day after for this month

#

I do remember I got my handheld close to the may patch (the 29th of April from what I was checking) and haven't had issues with playing on that

#

but it was using an igpu

#

and even using the handheld now it runs more stable than the laptop which is odd

#

like a lot more stable

#

and I got this laptop on wednesday

#

I'm thinking the midmonth or some hotfix patch after that is causing it all

#

actually yesterday after the shaders stuff the game would run the 360 fps

#

for the laptop

#

and there was a hotfix patch today which probably is the cause

#

I think based on the patch notes and that I've been using training mode to test it, probably the 2nd dot having some extra issues?

#

will have to test it tomorrow in versus mode

spice yarrow
#

See what that does at high, and of course if needed go even lower

spice yarrow
#

Hmm

#

Idk how

#

but now the game is running completely fine on the same exact patch

#

there's two factors to it I think

#

three at most

#

time somehow getting the computer to work better after close to an entire day without usage at all

#

the computer itself

#

actually wait

#

whenever steam itself is open and in front of the game tabs wise, the fps drops

modern thistle
#

Yeah I think I'm done until they fix this game

#

Unfortunately

#

Had a lot of fun with it, but it's unplayable

spice yarrow
#

you did try changing the graphics settings rifht

modern thistle
#

I've changed

#

Literally all settings I can think of

#

Have done as many in game and out of game tweaks as I could

spice yarrow
#

Yeah this game is weird man

modern thistle
#

Like if you name it I've tried it

#

They need to add the option to turn off certain stage bullshit

spice yarrow
#

dx 11 and dx 12 just making sure

modern thistle
#

Yes

#

I've tried both

hardy bay
#

If it's in a laptop it almost sounds like it's using the cpu for graphics instead of dedicated because that weird switching stuff. No idea how good that is now on windows

modern thistle
#

I'm using a desktop lol

#

It's literally the game

#

They made shit worse when they added the caching bullshit

#

I think that's when it started

hardy bay
#

Ah

#

As soon as I moved it all off epic everything was fine for me for the most part but also have it locked to 120fps max I think

modern thistle
#

Doesn't even matter if I turn shit down

#

Game just doesn't function

#

I can have it at 400 fps and I'll just experience constant fluctuations in framerate

#

Nothing usually below my monitor's, but it'll still stutter every once in a while in a way that loses me games

#

It's a bit unbearable

spice yarrow
#

Yeah I had the exact same thing yesterday

#

And somehow it fixed itself

modern thistle
#

would like someone from the support team to chime in on this

#

but i'm not expecting anything at this point

spice yarrow
#

true but idrk at this point because of combo breaker

#

(major tournament for this game this weekend iirc)

tired creek
#

They did earlier in the thread, but it's been about a month.

#

My major issues cleared up after a patch, and other issues were fixed by clearing cache and closing other programs to make sure the game didn't spillover to system RAM (my distro has Valve's VRAM patches, but I haven't gotten plasma foreground booster to work yet)
