#Laptop overheating without disabling turbo boost(msi gf63 12ve thin)
157 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
i have had this laptop for like 9 months and i dont think it should overheat that much yk
Feel free to ping me
What are you using to tell what the temperatures are or is it a matter of the device itself getting really hot?
device getting really hot, throttle stop and msi center
on roblox max settings i got to max 98C
with turbo boost on(the intel cpu one)
it was averaging 85 to 98 max
This might not end up being necessary, but I would be curious to see how the clock speeds either decrease or stay steady over time.
Have you opened up the back to remove any dust build up on the fans and inside the heat sink?
If you end up having to remove the cooler from the laptop to clean it properly then you will want to have extra thermal paste to repaste it (which also could potentially help).
Would you be willing to run a Time Spy benchmark with CPUID HWMonitor running, and video record the whole thing?
If you have HWMonitor open you will want to minimize all parts that aren’t CPU and GPU and expand the individual CPU core temps to look like the photos.
in the first place
i cannot open my laptop at all
because of the factory seal
it will probably void my warranty
and if you teach me how to use time spy sure
i can share screen you if needed
Not share screen, just record a video of your screen to show the benchmark running and have both HWMonitor and that running.
where can i install the app from?
I understand what you are saying but opening up your laptop shouldn’t void any warranty because most laptops have expandable storage and can have their RAM upgraded. I do not know what area you live in but maybe check with MSI support to see what your options are and see if they can give you something in writing if you are concerned about it.
https://benchmarks.ul.com/3dmark
This is the best and industry standard for bench marking your PC!
3DMark provides a free at home install through Steam that many people miss and think they have to pay for.
Don't get me wrong!
Support the devs if you like the app but they provide a Free demo and everyone should at least try that out once on ...
While this is running I would close other apps, including MSI Center.
alright
should i install this too?
I am recommending it, since it gives a lot of info about your system by having access to basically every sensor your device has.
hw monitor does not owrk on my pc
That is what pops up when you hit install from the download?
What version of Windows are you running?
Like the update version or just windows 10
Windows 10 is what I meant, thank you. Try a system restart and try again.
Alright
Still the same
@still sphinx
Also what should i use to record the time spy benchmark
Okay, let’s forget about that, weird that it won’t open but I don’t want to spend a bunch of time diagnosing that. You can uninstall HWMonitor.
Okk
You don’t have to any longer, I would have preferred having a video showing the stats, but we can get a look at some of that stuff with the bench mark.
Go ahead and run Time Spy with other apps closed and post the results and scroll down to get screenshots of all the charts.
Ok i pressed on the run button
You will end up wanting to post the score and the detailed results like that.
It says it was cancelled, did you stop the run?
totally not
i didnt even touch the pc
while that was happening
should i redo it
?
Yes, there should be multiple different parts of the test, like there it was Graphics Test 1.
alright i will redo
Might be because it being a demo.
Much better, see all those sections at the bottom showing different parts of the test.
so now what?
What you want to look for is temperatures and the clock speeds for CPU and GPU. I think it is very weird that it is saying your CPU speed was perfectly consistent that entire time. Is your laptop plugged into power right now?
yeah it is plugged in
and what do i do with that temp and clock speeds
What I was looking for are drops in the speed if it was getting too hot. Sure, the temps are probably running at their max, but that is basically how laptops work. If a GPU is supposed to run at 1700 mhz and at 85c, then that is fine. The issues come when it is at 85c but the clocks either slowly or sharply drop.
That would mean the laptop cannot cool itself to run at its normal speeds, and to stop it from killing itself it slows down, but in a normally functioning system the slower the clocks the cooler the temps.
so basically u think its normal?
In your system I am not seeing any obvious issue. The GPU clock speeds were stable, and running at what I would presume to be their proper speeds.
or did i understand it wrong
i mean i am still getting 98 C on roblox so thats fucked up
max ofc
lemme try playing roblox WITHOUT throttlestop opened
I forgot to ask and maybe you still have it, can you try opening HWMonitor as an administrator?
So, it didn't open again?
yep
Can you open task manager, or tell me what CPU is in your system?
I5 12450h
bro what
i got 71C on max graphics
on roblox
what the fuck happend
i just closed all my other apps
what happend?
Makes sense if you had a lot of other things running. Each program is going to pull the resources of the system.
yeah but 28C more
?
thats really weird
if u ask me
this is what i have open
i wasnt in a match here
just lobby
I wouldn't say it is that weird for a laptop. The surface area of the CPU and GPU are very small, and the size of the cooler is not that big either since it has to fit into the laptop.
Even in the lobby the laptop has to work rendering the screen.
ok its rising rn
77C
75-77
its not even bad
for a thin laptop
and im at max graphics
im usually at 5-6
and like
my turbo boost is on
with turbo boost on im usually running at 86-98C
this is a major increase
its actually really good
but
what happend?
why did this suddenly happen
whats the difference besides some apps closed
Good, maybe one of those programs like that throttle one was just making your system work too hard. I had never heard of it before.
You make it sound like closing the apps wasn't a big deal. You can get massive swings on performance scores with benchmarks if you open and close other apps because they drain resources.
Do you have an FPS counter open while playing games to see if those are affected?
not and external one but on the roblox one it says im running 60 fps(the cap) constantly
the only other apps were throttle stop, malwarebytes, razer app and blitz
Okay, so best advice for now is do not have a lot of apps running, uninstall programs you are not using (this would not include the HWMonitor that I asked you to install since it isn't working), and enjoy.
Malwarebytes could have really made your CPU work if it was doing some sort of scan while you were looking at temps.
it wasnt doing any scans ik that cuz my trial ended lol
Do u think buying this will help?
My recommendation is continue to play/test and keep programs closed that you are not using.
You know how to disable apps from starting up when the PC is turned on?
yeah i know that dont worry
i have been playing on pc since i was 3
i should know how to do that properly
lol
should i keep msi center on like
startup
?
Do you need MSI Center to control your fan profile?
i am not sure about that
should i test it
?
i use extreme mode on it, it makes my fan be used at the max output
these are the settings for extreme mode
imma restart my pc and check
with it disabled
Maybe look at temps if you have MSI Center closed. It would be biased since people complain when there is an issue, but I have only seen issues with MSI Center.
Plus, it would be one less program pulling resources of the laptop.
Yeah i need it opened
I don't have an opinion of a thermal pad one way or the other, since I have never used one.
My only recommendation would be to read reviews, see if people say it does what it promises, and check if the extra fan noise from the pad would drive you insane or not.
Nvm i dont
It just takes a bit to use extreme mode
Okay, well if you are not having issues with it, then it shouldn't cause any issues. Advice is saying the same, close stuff you don't need, and make it so it won't start up in the background. One being malwarebytes since you are not even under services.
i never thought it would because of processes
thats really crazy
thank you so much
if you wouldnt have told me to close all processes, i would have been still wondering whats wrong
You are welcome. Glad it got back to a level of performance that you can enjoy.
Yeah I always restart my PC before I start playing games, especially if my PC has been on for a long time.
