My dad (Italian) was born in Moscow

#

I am the only kid born in Russia who is Russian in my family

#

National identity is complex and I would say it's just where you feel like you belong generally

simple mason
#

Made me remember this meme

woven plinth
#

My great grandparents

#

Were a landowner family in Ukraine (Kherson)

#

They had to move away

#

Because of the Soviets

#

To Kyrgyzstan/Kazakhstan

#

Is all

stone egret
#

And yet here I am being disappointed that my passport has no indication that I lived in the south of the Netherlands for most of my life lmao

#

Y'alls nationalities change without even moving

#

Puts my thing into perspective I guess

woven plinth
#

Celebrate Austrian stuff and used to celebrate the Kaiser's birthday

simple mason
#

South Tyrol?

woven plinth
#

Friuli

#

Many people who are orginally from here will also tell you they are not from Italy but name their region instead

#

Furthermore even our region doesn't like eachother amongst themselves

#

It takes around 5-10km for people to start speaking a funny accent

simple mason
woven plinth
#

So it's a fair guess

ebon birch
#

yeah good point

woven plinth
#

And even amongst Friulan there is division

#

There's already 3 but I would draw a few more lines

ebon birch
woven plinth
#

What is this lol

ebon birch
#

brainrot

woven plinth
#

No wonder

ebon birch
#

its like that in puglia too

#

ppl in my dads village speak a language completely different from the one a village over

#

the old ppl dont even speak italian

woven plinth
#

There is a difference between

#

Dialects and languages tho

#

And also bc Friuli was part of Austria, we have a chunk of Slovenia and Croatia and France

ebon birch
#

idk I think a lot of the dialect/language discussion in italy is very missleading

#

yeah there are dialects of italian but i think most regions do have a language different enough from italian to be their own language

woven plinth
#

There is also "Autonomous regions" for the more culturally excluded regions of Italy

ebon birch
#

like dialect implies it developed from italian

#

whereas italian is really just florence and the surrounding area right

#

so everything else didnt develop from italian, it developed parallel to it

woven plinth
ebon birch
#

but thats just semantics i guess

ebon birch
#

big up italy

woven plinth
#

But Italian evolved since then I would say

ebon birch
#

do you think southern italisns are poor and unevolved and backwards

woven plinth
#

It is hard to say people in Turin speak their own language

ebon birch
#

ive hard the most crazy opinions about southern italians

#

from nothern italians

ebon birch
#

its all funny to me

woven plinth
#

I did not have a great experience with a Napoletano classmate

#

Calling someone a southerner "Terron"

#

Is considered an insult

ebon birch
#

from a kinda southern perspective

#

italians are meant to be poor

#

north italisn are too rich to be real italians

#

(joke)

woven plinth
#

From a Friulian perspective we have less unemployment and longer work hours to fund the less working regions

ebon birch
#

hahahahahhaha

woven plinth
#

And Rome and Milan

#

So we want to leave

#

Either with the Venetians etc. or back into Austria or by ourselves

ebon birch
#

okay but which region has the best food?

woven plinth
#

Last 10 years that sentiment is dying due to southern Italian immigration

#

Diluting the demographic

ebon birch
#

yeah i have italian family everywhere

#

inside and outside of italy

#

theres no reason to stay in puglia

woven plinth
#

I've only been south of PĂČ once

ebon birch
#

damn i've never been north of Pisa

woven plinth
#

In Rome

ebon birch
#

I wanna go to Milan this year though

woven plinth
#

Otherwise my family doesn't really go south of Veneto usually

woven plinth
#

It is what you would expect from a capital of any country

#

Less Italian, more international

#

More garbage

#

If there is any place I would live in Italy I would stay in Milan tho

ebon birch
#

If i moved to italy, it would have to be to a big city that has tech jobs

woven plinth
#

I left Italy

ebon birch
#

so milan makes the most sense

woven plinth
#

And don't want to return

simple mason
ebon birch
#

you disliked it that much?

woven plinth
#

I was born in Moscow

#

Left at the age of 5

#

To a different country

#

Came to Italy at the age of 9

#

Knowing 0 Italian words

simple mason
#

I would definitely much rather live in northern Italy than Moscow

ebon birch
#

yeah but theres also the factor of where you feel more at home

simple mason
#

I've only been to northern Italy. I'd live there rather than in Moscow even just because of its position, Moscow is so far away from everything else. There's also the thing called Russian government...

stone egret
#

Hot take: Ea Nasir is a fucking scam artist and we need to cancel him for his shit copper

woven plinth
#

Moscow is also full of places itself

simple mason
#

Well yes

woven plinth
#

We have The Golden Ring

#

You could argue yes less cultural diversity

#

But that just depends on how much you like the cultures around you too

#

There is a lot of stuff around local tourism

#

As it is widespread in Russia for many reasons

#

Even before sanctions

simple mason
#

But from Italy you can reach basically the whole western Europe and a big chunk of eastern Europe within a 1-2 day car drive, and I don't think there's that many interesting things around Moscow

woven plinth
#

Saint. Petersbourg is 4 hours of train +-

simple mason
#

Also it's too flat around Moscow

woven plinth
#

Well yes

#

As I said

#

It also depends how much you are a fan of city stuff rather than nature

#

Having lived enough around the Alps I didn't really mind losing them tbf

slate veldt
woven plinth
simple mason
woven plinth
#

Outside of Moscow everything is cheaper

slate veldt
#

wait what cities have the most historical sites in russia

woven plinth
#

For those reasons

simple mason
woven plinth
#

Depends where you live

#

But I lived in the poor North

slate veldt
#

four hrs by train lowkey ligjt work

woven plinth
#

Not the rich northern Italy

simple mason
woven plinth
#

Gdp per capita ppp of Russia is around the level of Baltics

#

With an asterisk

#

Cause inequality

#

But y'know

#

It wouldn't drop it as much as it seems

#

Moscow wages are around 2-3x surrounding regions

#

So if you are from there, you will be able to afford quite some local stuff

#

Only rich people could afford Western EU before

#

And still can now

simple mason
woven plinth
#

U have Ljubljana (More expensive)

#

Salzburg (Way more expensive)

#

MĂŒnchen (Way more expensive)

#

Milan (Same inequality as Moscow and surrounding)

#

And Switzerland (I won't even mention it)

#

The problem with Italy is its poor education for me

#

There is actually a lack of tertiary education which is rare

#

But the system sucks so bad you rather just move elsewhere where you can afford to

#

Since in your vicinity you have so much choice

#

Many of the cities are built around tourism so there is less incentive for locals to stay

#

Venice is a great example

#

Moscow is centralised for not only tourism but also locals, hence offers more opportunity

#

Milan is not an option for me, but if it was, why not just go to Switzerland or Austria or Germany for those prices

vague bolt
#

i lowkey feel that, ngl

#

higher education is so inaccessible to so many people. i myself can barely afford to get my education, and ive had to take out loans to pay my tuition + fees. i am more fortunate than a lot of people though, since my hometown is a college town with a good geology program, but holy shit is it expensive. idk how it is in your area, but for the US, its like if the cost of the education doesn't get you, the cost of living will.

#

i was actually talking to my dad about this recently, but also it seems like the minimum education to get a job these days is at least a bachelors degree, but often companies will state they are looking for somebody with "5 years experience, a masters degree will substitute for two" so even people with undergrad degrees are struggling to find reliable work. in the '80s, you could get a job that could sustain a family with nothing but a high school diploma. it wouldnt be glamorous work fs, but it would be reliable and pay enough to support a family.

#

seems like education systems just suck overall

#

for different reasons across the globe, but still

slate comet
#

education is free in germany shibaCool

ebon birch

vague bolt
#

this shouldnt be a hot take but: people who cant write an essay piss me off. and ofc i dont mean people who struggle to write due to learning disabilities or because they are writing in a secondary language or smth. i mean people who wont read the material, get the basic information in their essay wrong, cannot form a coherent sentence, and everything they write in the essay is complete filler with no actual substance

#

i just peer reviewed an essay for one of my classes and i thought my essay was not my best, because it wasn't, quite frankly. but then i sat down to peer review one of my classmate's work and i could tell she had no clue what she was writing about. its one thing to put off the essay until the day its due and have to half-ass it to get it done (i would know), and its another thing entirely to try to write an essay without knowing literally anything about the essay prompt

ebon birch
#

yeah a lot of people at uni are shit at writting essays - me included. Luckily I didn't really have to for my subject

Steamy scenes in tv shows and movies shouldn’t be a thing

#

literally so unnecessary

stone egret
# boreal ermine Steamy scenes in tv shows and movies shouldn’t be a thing

Steamy scenes that are more about the couple's chemistry and are shot sensually rather than "oh look at these people boinking" are fine IF THEY'RE RARE. But they should stick to like a makeout and then fade to black as the audience realize they're about to boink. Steamy scenes between two people who have 0 chemistry but we're supposed to realize that they're experiencing love at first sight just because they're a man and a woman CAN FUCKING DIE

vague bolt

but a steamy scene here and there is not necessarily bad

idk if this is a hot take or not but when people talk about the pepsi vs coke thing all i can think about is rootbeer because it is objectively the best soda

#

I have been told they reworked it but idk how much of that was due to my review lmao

Because "I want a wife/kids" is about ownership and "I want to be a father" is about wanting a certain role and implies they want to be actually actively present

But at the same time, fatherhood is seen as a more passive and fun role in society and men don't need to take it that seriously because mom will pick up the slack (and if the kid looks unkempt or something it'll always be seen as the mother's fault)

vague bolt
#

(preface by saying im an environmental science nerd who is going into hydrology) hydroelectric power is not a "clean" energy source in any respect except for its carbon emissions, but when you look at how it basically turns rivers into systems of slack water pools and ruins both fish habitat (pacific lamprey my beloved) and Native American hunting/gathering/sacred sites, it becomes increasingly more obvious that it just isnt worth it. it's "clean" but it disrupts the natural river environment farrrrrr to much

#

some environmentalists are much too focused on carbon emissions and forget that no energy infrastructure exists in a vacuum

#

might be clean, but its not very green

#

these goofballs are heavily threatened by hydroelectric dams

#

anyways hydro is possibly one of my least favorite energy sources

stone egret
#

People should only get rid of entire water systems to build a whole new province (this joke was brought to you by the Dutch)

#

Anyway, speaking of clean energy: people who are anti wind turbines on the coastline because they "ruin the view" need to be burned for fuel imo

vague bolt
#

i love the look of turbines

#

i think they make the view better

#

they have been known to kill birds of prey though. the good thing is thats pretty easily adapted by making the rotation of the blades dependent on bird flight patterns

stone egret
#

I think Dutch people especially who are against them are dumb af like windmills are literally our thing??? Why can we not agree that modern windmills (the names for windmill and windturbine in Dutch are the same) are dope as hell and should be considered as a way we continue our windmill legacy???

vague bolt

its not perfect ofc

slate veldt

the first two diasters were because of errors that couldve been avoided

and the third didnt even have that much damage

vague bolt
#

yeah why do they keep putting nuclear power plants in locations with megathrust earthquakes hello

#

"tsunami? pshhhh that wont be an issue"

slate veldt
#

nuclear waste is not that much of a concern considering the amount of place allocated to manure waste, landfill, etc etc

stone egret
slate veldt
#

yeah but technology wise, people have only improved on existing systems

#

i do get that argument about the far far future

#

but also not really

#

considering we just keep building on info we already have

boreal ermine
#

ya wait i heard nuclear energy is acc peak

vague bolt
#

its pretty good yeah

slate veldt
#

100% nuclear power is very unlikely, but a good chunk of energy can be nuclear

stone egret
#

It's a great power source in theory but it's impossible to predict what the world will look like and which countries will elect an absolute buffoon as their leader which will lead to system failure due to neglect because old fucks in power won't live long enough to see the effects of their shitty rulings

boreal ermine
#

there's an old one i see whenever i do the drive down to san diego. call it the sano tiddies

vague bolt

and nuclear is pretty safe as long as you account for geology and shit

slate veldt
#

europe is actually a really good area to have nuclear power plants because the lack of natural disasters
(but not many made ones gulp)

#

man made*

boreal ermine
#

damn ur so right i just realized they dont have a lot of natural disasters

vague bolt
#

and as long as we develop better waste management techniques, which is applicable to every kind of energy so

stone egret
#

Okay good to know I'm screaming into the void

slate veldt

slate veldt
stone egret
#

Nuclear power is an energy source where you have to think about the responsibilities you're putting onto the future rather than just saying "well it's safe right now"

boreal ermine
#

wait i thought it WAS safest tho

#

ppl think cernobyl

slate veldt
#

yeah but when many lives are on the line i dont think the people who work there will be quiet about it

#

because yk the people who work there wanna live too

stone egret
boreal ermine
#

god i hate the way takis stains ur fingers

slate veldt
#

i dont think the government owns powerplants?

#

companies get approval from the government

#

but i dont think its 100% the government

vague bolt
#

that depends on the area

slate veldt
#

yeah

vague bolt
#

hanford site was owned and operated by the government and it was also really harmful to the environment because of the improper waste management

slate veldt
#

anyways decomission is like in two processes, the immediate part (to take away the highest risk thing aka the reactor and the long part (to let the remaining stuff decay away))

vague bolt
#

the biggest problem there is potential leakage of chemicals that have really long half lives

#

nuclear is complicated because it can be very safe and very effective and very eco-friendly, but it can also be incredibly detrimental to human health, and if something goes wrong, it can cause big problems

slate veldt
#

nuclear energy also has the potential to become even safer (fusion) but there isnt any interest in it (because its also rlly expensive to research) đŸ„€

stone egret
#

Ugh this is why I hate discussions about nuclear energy. Because it turns into a debate of "well it's actually quite safe because we do x, y and z" and like I KNOW but that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about nuclear power plants having the capability of doing an extreme amount of damage to an area that might not have had anything to do with the power plant in question. And just because it's safe right now, doesn't mean you can be absolutely certain future neglect won't occur. You're handing over a lot of responsibilities to future generations who might struggle with political unrest or a new pandemic or natural disasters that leads them to forget about the importance of regular maintanance and keeping safety measures in check. And that's assuming the government is a good one and a dictatorship doesn't break out.

#

I'm not saying there is no space for nuclear energy. I'm just saying it's not as simple as "well it is clean right now" because it's a long term responsibility

slate veldt
#

i mean thats why you cant build nuclear energy just anywhere rlly but there are a lot of places that should have nuclear power plants

stone egret
#

And that goes the same for the waste btw. You're saddling the future generations with the waste you created and assuming they will handle it witht the same care you did

boreal ermine
#

the sad thing tho is that the world as a whole operates without really giving a fuck about the future

#

so its like, if we can benefit the now, thats the best option

stone egret
boreal ermine
#

ya in theory but in practice?

#

im not seeing it rn

slate veldt
stone egret
#

Just because it doesn't happen in practice doesn't mean you should throw in the towel and decide you won't care either

boreal ermine
#

im not saying thats my own personal belief btw im saying in the context of the world

slate veldt
#

there are many toxins and poisons and dangerous things that have stayed in human history for a long time and thats without having technology and stuff

stone egret
crimson shell
#

i feel like nuclear energy would be easy to sabotage

#

like just bombing some other countrie's site

slate veldt
#

anything is easy to sabotage

stone egret
#

I was gonna mention that too

vague bolt
#

most energy sources are easy to sabotage

crimson shell
slate veldt
#

yeah but the attacking country lowkey has to take into account the fact that THEY could be affected too

#

but not all leaders are smart so

#

but if someone bombs a nuclear power plant then that kinda will straight up could evolve into nuclear warfare

stone egret
slate veldt
slate veldt
stone egret
slate veldt
#

why would there be a bomb nearby there anyway 😭

#

idk another way a nuclear power plant could be sabtoaged

stone egret
#

"Oopsie, I thought you were hiding soldiers there"

slate veldt
#

yeah the country that got attacked could just say "idc fuck you" boom nuclear weaponary used

stone egret
#

"This elementary school looked very suspicious when I flew over with my drone"

slate veldt
#

it'd escalate either way

#

war only rlly escalates

vague bolt
#

nuclear power is evidence of why LCA is needed for just about any product or service tbh

stone egret
stone egret
slate veldt
#

an honest mistake but it could still be an act of war

#

so

#

😭

#

anyways this is why we should invest in fusion

stone egret
slate veldt
#

yeah but power plants are on the countries land

#

so i feel like it gets more iffy there

vague bolt
#

ngl, if we used the possibility of war as the basis of why we should not do something, we would never get any progress made

slate veldt
#

but for waste storage site though the knowledge just does have the possibility to continue to be passed down like... look at hamlet and the odyssesy and beauwolf etc ect

vague bolt
#

and at the same time, avoiding war is good

slate veldt
#

there is a lot of knowledge that has stayed in humanity for a long ass time and again we have technology now to keep helping us

vague bolt
#

both statements can be true

stone egret
stone egret
slate veldt
#

right but there is an elevated importance here

stone egret
#

Wich also creates more incentive for hackers to fuck with the data

slate veldt
#

its not like there isnt more than one way to save data

#

dont we still have the og copy of the constitution?

stone egret
#

In general, history has not been kind to those who assumed there was no way their plan would fail

slate veldt
#

yeah thats why you have more than one plan

#

do everything that you can to ensure the knowledge carries for as long as it can

#

say the knowledge does get lost of the exact area the waste is, there could still be knowledge of the general area which can be used to pinpoint the exact area again

vague bolt
#

true, having back up plans upon back up plans is necessary for risky things like nuclear power

#

because manonnie is right, the possibility of something going wrong in the future is really dangerous

slate veldt
#

if the knowledge of nuclear waste, energy, radiation, and radiation poisoning continues to exist then the knowledge of the sites should still exist

slate veldt
#

ive gone down the waste debate

#

that rhymes lmao

vague bolt
#

like we would never be able to fully transition to nuclear energy (especially as we currently stand) but it would be possible to do LCA, LCIA, and LCCA to plan for as many mishaps as possible

#

we do that for other things too, like earthquakes and tsunamis

slate veldt
slate veldt
#

i mentioned that earlier lmao

vague bolt
#

yuh

slate veldt
#

it cant be used everywhere but there a lot of places where it should be used

vague bolt
#

could* be used

slate veldt
#

plus those areas like the ring of fire, etc can use other better forms of energy like geothermal(?)

stone egret
vague bolt
#

yeah keep nuclear away from the pacific ocean PLEASE

slate veldt

real

vague bolt

but like vermont maybe

the western us is tearing itself apart (literally)

which would be using man made structures etc

vague bolt

the seattle fault zone and the san andreas fault zone are crazy

i feel like that cant be really used in an argument, because then that brings in a lot of other things into play

stone egret

Also the nutty putty cave guy ignored warning signs

And so did all those other cave people who died

slate veldt
#

if there are warnings when using/entering something, then a lot of things should not be used anymore

#

like xrays, chemicals, etc etc

#

basic house hold chemicals are very dangerous

vague bolt
#

https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2015AGUFM.T34B..05M/abstract <-- this is the geology shit im referencing btw. not all locations in the Americas are active geologically. lots of volcanoes and subduction make a lot of shit unsafe. the next time the PNW experiences a megathrust earthquake, entire towns long the Washington coast will be decimated

Geodetic, geologic and paleomagnetic data reveal that Oregon and parts of California, Nevada and Idaho rotate clockwise at 0.3 to 1.0 deg/Ma (relative to North America) about an axis near the Idaho-Oregon-Washington border, while northeast Washington is relatively fixed to North America. This rotation has been going on for at least 15 Ma. The sp...

I forget how big these casks are

Here's a photo of them

Now not everywhere with nuclear power does this

But it is one of our best solutions to the highly radioactive and non recyclable waste

Which is such a small part of total waste

I think it's something like 6% that has to be buried in these casks

For modern reactors it's essentially impossible to melt down or even get close to it. There are so many failsafes that to actually get it to meltdown you would have to do it deliberately and even if it would, their concrete shielding (basically a concrete bunker they're built in) will block basically all the escaping radiation. They shut themselves on their own so even if all the people disappeared they will be safe. Modern reactors can cool themselves passively without any outside intervention. The technology improves all the time so it actually gets safer throughout the time.

#

Even if a modern nuclear powerplant would get bombed the total radiation it would leak would be significantly lower than from the Chernobyl disaster.

But her boyfriend never got anything beyond a high school education because he got to work in his dad's business so then she was just like "well it works for my boyfriend" and then started working full time at her shitty side job so like life is enough karma as it is

Her boyfriend and parents both have money so she has ppl who can provide for her if she doesn't make much. But nope, she's still working in this distribution center doing scheduling work (which is the shittiest job in that place.
