just gonna drop my opinion again since this idea has been thrown around for a while
i disagree with the common point "more direct communication" - i'd argue this channel and other relevant things are as direct as it gets. going through a mayor is just adding in a buffer before it gets to the people with actual real power to change things, plus it also doesn't necessarily involve the communty in the decision the way this channel does.
some of the things you mentioned for mayor responsibilites would essentially require staff permissions to enforce

Also there's always the problem of the elected mayor dropping out of the server after a while or turning out to be a shitty person
