This is a topic that I’ve been thinking about a lot recently. Also, keep in mind I am coming from the POV of someone who only plays WW2 and who has no interest in CW so long as it has the true vision system.
I think we can agree that the gameplay does NOT feel as fun as it used to in the past. Which shouldn’t be the case when you consider how much more variety has been added to the game. So many cool new mechanics and tech trees and collaborations should mean the game is improved. And I think variety does improve the game but not when it comes at the cost of the gameplay.
I remember a time when everyone complained that Russian mediums were OP. They were too well rounded is what people would say. But I think the fact that 320 ALPHA, poor gun depression, MEDIUM tanks being the most competitive for WINNING games actually really helped the enjoyment of the game. Because the variety in matches was still always there anyways. The trade off for playing something less competitive (and by competitive I mean able to win games/effect on overall win rate) was that your tank had character to it you deemed worth it. Maybe it’s a TD with ridiculous high alpha. Maybe a heavy tank with hilariously good armor. You often found yourself in situations where being in the low alpha, moderately armored and mobile Russian mediums would be preferable to winning. But that was okay.
Somewhere along the way, the devs decided every tank needed to be equally competitive, balancing tanks purely on win rate difference with no consideration of how those changes will skew the matchmaker and consequently the gameplay. So you end up in this situation where the matchmaker if flooded with meme tanks that on paper shouldn’t negatively impact balance but severely impact the gameplay and battle length.
#It’s better for the game if not all tanks are balanced to be competitive.

Personally I feel the main issue is when there is a high percentage of tds in the lobby or double arty
Glad we don't have triple artillery anymore
I don’t think the devs “desire to make everything competitive” is quite as prevalent as maybe you’re making out
A factor as to why games are only lasting 3 minutes and it’s always 15-4, is because actually the disparity between competitive and non competitive tanks is too high. It feels like update 4.6 all over again at times when you stray outside of playing the super gigga meta tanks
Which shouldn’t be the case. If you pick tanks that aren’t meta, they should have a reason for that. They shouldn’t just be flatout garbage compared to everything else
