It is. Silly, scrambled and cartoonish as it was. And when you think about the era it was released, it was probably a very healthy release for a generation of war vets finally able to laugh about the war.
Here in Canada though its airings are preceded by a "Product of its time/Discrimination against any group is wrong" disclaimer. As if we are wrong to laugh at buffoonish "Nazi" characters. (Who were actually, for the most part, played by European Jewish actors who survived the war. The Frenchman was a concentration camp survivor too). Not to get political or anything, it just seems stupid to air something like that before a silly comedy whose only purpose was to allow audiences to laugh. No wonder there are few, if any, good comedies today. Instead we get stand-up comics whose main goal is to insult and offend.

Sgt Schultz is probably our favourite character though. A big bear of a man who's clearly incapable of intentionally hurting anybody. Though he does seem confused as to whether he has a wife and kids at home or not. Like everything else on the show, it bounces around to suit the specific episode.

I binge watch the show frequently it’s just a classic example of humor as long as you are actually willing to put aside the fact there are “the bad guys” and “bad symbols” present it’s a good example of 50s?/60s? Television
I like the episodes where Carter impersonates the “big man” and his impression (even though his impression is making him a joke) the Germans take him as the real thing 😝

I've only fairly recently discovered the show. I skipped the first few episodes thinking I had it on DVD, but I'm pretty sure that was "Rat Patrol", so I don't know if the opening episode established their official mission or not. I have figured it out since though. The show really is scrambled, with "invasion plans" being the topic of an episode about 12 episodes after the D-Day landings were mentioned. But as with summer blockbusters, you just have to switch off the old noggin, sit back and enjoy the show.
(The occasional pretty lady is a bonus too).
