ik
cinnamon edition btw
wait can you give me 1 sec i need to go do something not on my pc
yes you have the same installer across the different editions of mint so same process, except for LMDE
LMDE?
Linux Mint Debian Edition
ohhh
sure if you're ready to install alongside xubuntu
do i need my phone ready
and why do you take a long time to reply @quasi vortex
I was in #⛑triage my guy
sure yeah if its the only device you can use discord on
yes i use authy and discord on it
great now to dual boot
I believe you know how to go into BIOS, based on your conversation earlier with stunner
great now go to the point where you reached the partition editor on the installer
normal mode
if it doesn't work choose grub2
Ik the logins but how do I dual boot and I'm new to ventoy
Suppose to be a black screen
Ik how to install Linux mint but I'll tell you when I'm on the page
now test some stuff first like wifi or bluetooth
oh
mb
So I hit install now
yeah
go on
for when you bork your bootloader
yeah when you break it, it used to repair the bootloader
just wait, be patient
My first time dual booting btw
very nice
Windows? Ad I never seen it
after youre done installing you can pick which distro to boot via GRUB
So once I boot I don't need to press keys and just that will pop up
yes, then you can choose to boot either mint or xubuntu
Ohhh
Niceee
It's getting hot in here I'm going to turn the ac
Wait vani can I change my grub?
I always wanted the grub with Minecraft one
@quasi vortex
yeah, you can download a grub theme
thats the last slide, completely normal nothing to worry about
HELPPP @quasi vortex
@quasi vortex help please
@quasi vortex bro what happened to it
@quasi vortex I'm screwed
can you boot back into xubuntu?
and reflash your usb? using gnome-disks-utility?
if you dont have there install sudo apt install gnome-disks-utility
or just try to reinstall again
HOW
I mean boot back into mint and try to install it alongside xubuntu again
No I don't want xubuntu
well you can replace xubuntu with mint if your willing
Do I hit ok and clean install
yeah
you can copy your files from the xubuntu install to an external hard drive on the live environment
reboot and boot into the usb again
Are you sure
yes
hit enter and go into bios to boot back into the USB
Without removing the usb
yeah
shutdown -> remove usb -> replug -> turn on -> boot into mint
Okay
can you boot using grub2 and not normal?
reboot
This restarts
restart button?
cool
No
I'm scared of this
ok whatever your decision is I respect it
thats just ventoy being goofy, thats why I dont use it, instead I flash the iso directly
into the usb
says at bottom. F4 : Localboot that starts OS on SSD
What so it starts on my usb so THAT WAS THE PROBLEM?
if u have pc open, look in terminal: lsblk -o name, model
Ssd
yeah but check the command
something that shows here. which is either a mistake on your part, or wrong hardware was picked in the installer
Ohh
So should I show you all of the pictures I took
no
Oh okay
leave for tomorrow . g2g
@gritty oracle what is the problem exactly ?
installer crashed ?
because it's not terrifying to me... does the computer still booting Ubuntu correctly ?
Stunner told me to keep it in air and put it in 2.0 back in my pc
Yes xubuntu
PC is fine
so, nothing too harmful
I think it was to me
Your USB stick is an old Sandisk, right ?
Uhhh does this look old
yes, i bet it has almost 10 years, right ?
No i bought it in April and I joined this server because I hate ai helping me
oh, you mean it's almost brand new ?
Yes
damn, Sandisk is defintely shitty brand
I mean I have the recipe but it's on my box but there's a lot of boxes here
I forgot where I put it
I beleive you
Oh wait I bought it In April when it was about to be April 2
unless you moved the USB stick while installing
I swear to God I didn't move it I was laying on my bed and it poped up
ok, plug your usb on computer and boot on Ventoy
Ok do I put it back on my pc
step by step show me the first menu you see
Stunner said I needed a 2.0 black port
if no on your PC, where ?
you can plug your keyboard and mouse on USB 3.0 port
Okay
1 sec
@opal scaffold I'm back
I'll boot into boot menu
Ventoy
Wish me luck
@opal scaffold you there?
yes
Too fast for what
select file checksum
Again?
and select File checksum
FILE CHECKSUM
IK
wait
Select sha256sum
wait
better fast than slow
Takes almost 3 secs to get a %
30 rn
40%
50% halfway there
60%
70%
80% so close
the important is the final result
show result
bad checksum
Why
write error...
Am I stuck forever in xubuntu
shutdown computer
unplug USB stick boot to xubuntu and re-download the Linux mint ISO
you have a power button yes ?
you press power button, it will shut off
download the Linux Mint ISO file again:
https://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=326
Linux Mint is an elegant, easy to use, up to date and comfortable desktop operating system.
For now download the ISO on your HARD DRIVE
linuxmint-22.3-cinnamon-64bit(1).iso??? isnt that the same?
hard drive the usb drive or my ssd
never download ISO file directly from the web to USB stick... NEVER
its installed
isnt that what you did
It's renamed by your browser
oh yeah smart
WIAT ok STOP
? what
You unpluged you USB Stick ?
no
Done!
sorry =(
Now... Download Linux Mint iso on your Hard-Drive/SSD
no i only saw that in update linux mint when you uhhh make your internet good
i didnt know that
what are you f** takling about ?
this 1 sec
this thing when you have an update and theres a thing you can make your internet good
But, what are you talking about that ?
why is clicku taking so long to loud
Can you stay focus please ?
i just knew it
sorry
I don't give a shit about update, i want you to download the iso file on your hard drive
is it possible, yes or no ?
cicku is taking so longgg
ohh okay
what is possible booting mint with my ssd?
This is what you get when, you go too fast : #1507513393538400428 messageif
learn the lesson
no, downloading the iso file on your hard drive
for now the only thing i want you you to do is to download iso file on your hard drive
like /home/downloads/ (please dont get mad)
YES !!
are you english speaker ?
You can't break your computer downloading a file !
noo not that
it's only a file !
whys there two linux mint files
because the browser automatically rename the second occurrence if file with same name already exists
linuxmint-22.3-cinnamon-64bit(2).iso linuxmint-22.3-cinnamon-64bit(1).iso
the (2) file the latest your downloaded
Oh shit, how many time did you downloaded this file ?
did the download finished ?
the mint one yes both are but cicku is still loading
Oh shit...
cancel it
abord this download
close your browser
close everything
no...
please stop being afraid for nothing
you told me to close my browser?
it's only the regular mirror for linux mint downoad
and i got scared
yes close all everything
don't be scared
i did close firefox
you are simply so scared you did a lot or mistake and do wrong things
asking too much questions
so, everything closed ?
eveything closed ?
yes only discord
im sorry
Ok, open file manager, and go to your Download folder
and delete all variants of linuxmint-22.3-cinnamon* files
stop typing, do
delete all linuxmint-22.3- files
empty trash
don't know... anyway, you don't have any .iso file anymore in your download folder ?
well
why are you showing me this ?
i needed to install them they are missing
ok, find someone elese to help you, I give up
i mean stunner could help me but hes offline
you know what im staying in xubuntu
i didnt realized linux is this hard
I try to help you, and you don't stop going everywhere
talking about update, now about themes
dude you dont understand im stupid in linux and no one even understands me anymore
how one can help you if you can't focus only 2 min ?
ig its adhd i cant focus
close this fucking theme window
i did
so i dont need discord?
keep discord
download this file :
https://mirrors.cicku.me/linuxmint/iso/stable/22.3/linuxmint-22.3-cinnamon-64bit.iso
you sure thats the real one
yes
it downloaded faster than the other one
it finished ?
nooo
once i got on the link it downloaded the .iso file
12 sec
@opal scaffold done
mother board or up
motherboard
ok
do i click on ventoy
there is something wrong here
go on media/ruvox
eject it, and replug it
and i did it
show me file browser
huh where
yeah?
I want to see which media are mounted
Do you have Disks app on Xubuntu ?
yes
open it
what
damn...
i dont wanna
so wait
VENTOY WAS THE PROBLEM THE WHOLE ENTIRE TIME @opal scaffold
I bet you were downloading something in it while uplugging earlier
NO, the problem is that you do things too fast and don't focus !
So
i swear on my life i only installed pop os mint and i kept in my pc and i forgot to unplug it for a long time i didnt drag the iso's just one by one
Ventoy /v1.1.12 files. Browse /v1.1.12 files for Ventoy, A New Bootable USB Solution
go here
i hate my adhd
id rather not install ventoy again
So search for "USB creator" in your menu
once i searched usb nothing
I don't know Xubuntu
its like ubuntu but it uses the XFCE DE instead of gnome
So, if you don't have USB creator, you need to install ventoy
wait i can just get something on flatpak
in Xubuntu you should have USB creator
NO
NO
aw man
i swear theres no usb creator
wait do i just do sudo apt install USB creator
or you will say no
ok, download ventoy
select the tar.gz file
Download Ventoy ventoy-1.1.12-linux.tar.gz. A New Bootable USB Solution
yes
do i drag in terminal after
no
a file in the ventoy installation
extract it in a location you can found it
in downloads
yeah? do i drag ventoyGUI.X86_64 in terminal
because i remember stunner helping me install it
yes, try that
Option > Partition style > GPT
install or update?
Option > Partition style > GPT
Install
Right, you know have the proper "ventoy" partition
yes i put .iso in here
yes
and wait 30 secs after installion .iso
stunner told me that not me
yes but, wait
when do i put .isos
first, put the iso file, let it finish transfer
and wait
do nothing
tell me once it finished transfer
linuxmint-22.3-cinnamon-64bit.iso this?
yes
uhh @opal scaffold why did it go up to 1 sec to almost 51
now its 22 secs
copying is done
because transfer rate vary depending on available cache in destination media
the first burst of transfer is quick because of cache memory, but after, it get slow because it need to actually write data on chip
ohhh understand EVEN more
Ok, do no touch physically the USB stick, click the "Eject" icon
huh
wait for notification saying that USB can be safely removed
uhhh none
ventoy and VTOYEFI disapeared ?
noo
so wait for it
both?
one one
okay
only on is enough
device can be removed
since both are for the same media
right
remove the usb?
that is is normal process to ensure that every read/write operation actually finished on the media
this ensure the media properly recorded data
how do i check
if you don't ensure that, you may unplug the usb stick while it is in fact processing, and then, data is corrupted
what...
im sensitive about that...
and it told me device can be removed
That, when you have that, you know USB data transfer and processing finished
unless you properly eject it and don't have this kind of message, you may corrupt data on USB stick
no
okay ill keep it
Please, do you understad what I explain ?
If you remove it without properly ejecting it and before it told you and you actually can remove it safely
right?
oh man
now, you had this message, you properly eject, you could remove it, but don't : because we will restart
so no need to unplug it
oh ok
I wanted you to click eject and wait for the message to ensure that data properly processed in USB stick to be sure I/O operations finished
to avoid data error
understand ?
i do but what is I/O
In/Out
I/O = Input / Output = Read / Write
ok
"I/O Operation" = "Read/Write operation"
well... Restart your computer and boot to Ventoy USB stick
ok, do that
yes
Normal mode
sha256sum
nothing will happen, but I need the final result
the final result will tell if ISO image is corrupted or not
it's ok
Actually
press enter
not exactly
If something goes wrong...
you still have to install Mint
Ik clean install
you still plan to dual-boot ?
Ik how to I stall drivers
Is the problem ventoy or no
If it is then yes dual boot
@opal scaffold
No, not exactly, the problem is that when you copied the Linux Mint iso file into your USB stick the first time, it seem something wrong happened, and file was corrupted
so installer crashed
Okay so xubuntu too?
I guess you did not pay attention and uplugged the stick while still I/O operation remaining
select Something else
My phone is at 2 percent
So uhhh
@opal scaffold do I need to do the hard work
Wait let me type in discord firefox
@opal scaffold im in
@opal scaffold what now?
wait
ok
okay
and go to Menu > Administration > Gparted
it's enough to me
okay
so you want dual-boot yes ?
no
oh okay
Right click the ext4 partition and select Move/Resize
yes
i want 100/200 gb
or no 300 gb will fit me
since drivers programming and games?
@opal scaffold
This si your Xubuntu partition, move the right triangle you resize the partition the size you want
use the mouse to move the black triangle
what does the yellow mean?
Yellow = Occupied space
huh okay
okay i want 300 gb on mint please
so, resize the partition to have 300GB free
no use numbers
?
That is 270 GiB
another 0?
sorry
why did you set free space preceding ?
im sorry i dont understand i hate my adhd
and new size?
don't touch new size
652794 is normal right?
.
then you you have 650 GiB for Xubuntu and 300 GiB for Linux Mint, it's ok for you ?
no i want 300 GiB for mint
and all for xubuntu maybe
wait
how about half half?
If you want half/half
yea
put 480000 in Free space following
this?
Yes, it's ok for you ?
its half half right?
almost yes
click Resize/Move
do i click it or right click it
normal click
yes !
Tell me once it finished this operation
@opal scaffold
ok, close
Then in Gparted, select the Unalocated Space, right-click and New partition
yeah
theres only one button and its new
do that
i think im in the right page
this does not matter technically, it's only to identify it better in installer
so this we we are sure this is the one we want to install Mint on
this right???
ok, close gparted
open install?
launch installer and when it come select "Something else"
sorry
so, Something else
whereeee
then identify the Linux Mint partition in the list
ok, it do not display partition label
Use as : Ext4
Check Format the Partition
Mount point : /
Check Format the Partition
Check Format the Partition
Check Format the Partition
Check Format the Partition
Check Format the Partition
OK
and
Continue
yes
Continue
its been hours since this problem
i swear to god..
if it failed
im going to crash out and drill holes in my computer
INSTALLING SYSTEM
OH MY GOD FINALLY
@opal scaffold im going to restart
wish me luck...
it finished ?
go
okay
Black screen shall I restart @opal scaffold
Hit the restart button on my pc ?
@opal scaffold ???
I'm doing it
Hit it
OMG
Finally
it's xubuntu not mint
go in your BIOS setup
Ik I just wanted to test xubuntu first
ah ok
Go in my bio?
No no
What
if you selected Xubuntu it's ok
its okay
sedenion how do i get custom grub?
the last thing
this is the one i want
Open a new thread for that
I don't recommend you mess with grub
it's a sensitive part, avoid messing it up
wait
i found one on github
i dont trust this
you know what
keep your ugly simple but functionning grub Menu for now
once you become an experienced Linux user, try installing custom theme for grub if you want
so become it, don't pretend to be one
i am a noobie linux tech guy
yes, everybody started as newbie
so do i install stuff on mint
like drivers and stuff that are in the shield thing to update @opal scaffold
what i mean shield
I don't understand what you mean
uhh
you want to install things or update system ?
yes that thing so i dont lose performace
you want install driver, or run update manager ?
and one last thing sedeion
wait i was going to ask to enable fast boot but im stupid for it
ik how to do that
that "shield" icon as nothing to do with performances
stunner told me how
its for packages ig
No
what
ohh yeah i know now
its like apps update
and terminal
and other important stuff
Its for updating systems and installed programs yes
i want to do stuff on mint before i go and let the computer rest
if i didnt do it then im screwed
what is "do stuff" ?
drivers and system update
ok, you want to finalize your installation
yes
First, open Drivers Manager
ik
if you know, why do you ask ?
you dont need to tell me i need to go in drivers manager then click the reccomened and restart then i go in the shield (system update) and update restart
i ask you?
...
so you dont ask me again
sorry if i made it wrong for you
okay @opal scaffold do i install them
install what ?
drivers and system updates didnt i tell you
If you want ?!
wdym if you want everyone needs it after installing
So do it !
okay ill restart if that didnt work ill shut down and open
why are you asking me if you already know ?
so you dont ask me again?
If what don't work ?
you have adhd?
are you trolling me ?
what if it doesnt work???
it does?
or i can go in boot menu
If WHAT doesn't work ?
what are your talking about ? BE CLEAR
names things, add context
omg if i restart grub menu dont open ill shut down and open
get clues?
i said i wanted to boot in mint right?
and you just didnt thought of grub?
I don't understand, so... I don't know
oh its okay
sorry
dont say sorry
you talk about grub that don't open, then about mint then not grub
it appear to be a total mess in your head
what?
so clarify, and, maybe i could answer
im booting in grub no way
no way what ?
open terminal, type inxi -Gx; mokutil --sb and show result
Yes who wouldn't
I did restart
So, do you have problem or not ?
No
ok
I don't care
Okay
Okay I just did that because I felt like it
SOLVED (Solution : use manual partitioning through live gparted application, before running up the mint installer)
the real fix was to re-copy Mint ISO to USB stick, the ISO was corrupted
.
the royal fuck up was proceeding from this point : #1507513393538400428 message (destroying ventoy in the process) @quasi vortex , @opal scaffold always be aware for LVM horseshit - sometimes a user selection, and sometimes a case of dumb mint installer choosing the free space on wrong device.
the tip off is knowing is the target really sda?? or nvme0n1? was supposed to be the latter.
the other tip off is immediately after this. ^ Where was the divider/sizer graphic? went straight to a pre-write summary.
