I would recommend using Windows to make a full backup first

steady hearth

#

It should be somewhere in Windows to make a backup. I don't use Windows much now

steady hearth
#

ima find a video

steady hearth

Is this Windows 11?

You should disable bitlocker and the hybrid shutdown. How big is the drive?

hold on, sorry to jump in, but have you tried the live USB first to see if you actually want to install it?
I admire your spirit but I'm just asking if you know that you are installing something you want to use?

steady hearth
torn karma
#

ok, have you considered just booting from the linux usb for a while to get used to it?
Like naturally we here all think it's worth it, and we'll help you if you want, but just, you know, maybe dip your feet first?

You could do a search for Mint and your computer model and see if people do have issues

ventoy2disk from ventoy.net is about the easiest way to put the ISO on a USB

torn karma
#

Ventoy is very good! but it's not as intuative i would say. but especially if you want to try out a few different distros it's brilliant.

#

i think i just corrupted my flash drive

#

i cant format it

torn karma
#

it's been years since I ran windows. I think you need to open Disk Management, windows+r and enter diskmgmt.msc
there you should have more control of the disk. might be able to format it or delete existing partition.

#

if that fails should be fine to just unplug and plug in again, that might let you access it again.
anyone here knows windows? 😣

shut solar
#

use ventoy

#

if anything can restore the drive, it's that

#

however, if you find that in Disk Management, the usb appears as there but 'no media' , it's likely toast.

steady hearth
#

Hi sorry I took so long

#

I restarted my laptop and discord just glitched and won't load so I'm on my pad here

steady hearth
shut solar
#

ok so if usb drive is shown as the right total size, just run ventoy2disk onto that drive letter

steady hearth
#

I think I made it worse ngl

#

NVM I FIXED DOING RANDOM SHI

steady hearth
#

The website said to use etcher

shut solar
#

use ventoy

#

we all literally just told u

steady hearth
#

Alr lemme install it rq

shut solar
#

follow the link above. 7 simple steps

#

and that , only if needed.

steady hearth
#

Wait wait how much storage does my flash drive need?

steady hearth
shut solar
#

about 4 gigs minimum

steady hearth
shut solar
#

ventoy preps the drive as a multifunction data/bootable drive.

#

and multi-image, as jeremy noted before

steady hearth
#

Ok wait I do have some questions

shut solar
#

sure

steady hearth
#

I've followed it until the part where ventoy is now in my flash drive I copy my iso file and paste it into the new ventoy flash drive thing correct?

steady hearth
shut solar
#

yes exactly

steady hearth
shut solar
#

if booting the same pc, ?

#

or taking to another?

steady hearth
shut solar
#

disable windows fast startup and bitlocker if either are on (takes time to fully decrypt bitlocker if on)

#

then follow step 7 and the added notes in the link

#

if planning to wipe out windows, nevermind those two things

steady hearth
#

No I want to keep windows

#

First I need to figure out how to disable bitlocker

#

Fast start up is in the bios I'm pretty sure

shut solar
#

different animal

steady hearth
shut solar
#

run powercfg /a in admin windows prompt to check

#

if 'fast startup' appears in the list of 'available' things, then disable it. powercfg /h off

steady hearth
#

Ok so I did some dumb shit

#

I did manage to turn off fast start uo

#

But I think I also accidently turned off something else

shut solar
#

where?

steady hearth
#

Hibernate I somehow turned off hibernate

shut solar
#

if u ran the last command i gave, then it's natural for both to appear in the 'prohibited' or unavailable things near bottom

steady hearth
#

Yea I did

shut solar
#

run powercfg /a to doublecheck

steady hearth
#

Lemme send a pic

#

Don't worry about how dirty it is, this laptop has been through things

#

But fast start up is now gone

#

Now for bitlocker idk how to do that

The Linux Mint Community Wiki

This page is a guide describing how to install Linux Mint on your personal computing device.

Linux Mint is distributed as an ISO image (an .iso file) which can be used to make a DVD or a USB flash drive that your computer can boot from. This guide will help you prepare, install, and set up Linux Mint on your device.💡 Tip: Read first through ...

#

the bitlocker thing is in there as part of system prep

steady hearth
#

Bro I just checked it bit locker is off for all my drives

#

And perfect timing my iso to the ventoy flash drive just finished

steady hearth
shut solar
#

nah did u look in disk management?

#

does it say any mention of bitlocker there?

steady hearth
shut solar
#

ok then just follow step 3 in the wiki link above, and carry on with it. shows everything there.

steady hearth
torn karma

"It is recommended to DISABLE Secure Boot on your machine."

steady hearth
steady hearth
#

Do I boot in normal mode?

steady hearth
torn karma
#

yes, normal mode should work fine

steady hearth
#

Alr

#

Ok we in

#

I need help

#

What do I do

#

I don't want to accidently do something stupid

torn karma
#

i think you moved a bit to fast, you are now in the process of installing Linux mint, mess around in the live version a little before?

steady hearth
#

Wait wait so I wasn't supposed to do this? If I continue will it be put on my disk instead of flash drive? And Ill start checking it out

torn karma
#

You have now started "installing" linux mint, before you go ahead with any kind of install we need to check your disk and the partitions. since you want to keep Windows alongside mint.

shut solar
#

click no, and back out of installer

#

you can always relaunch it, or reboot untouched back to this live system

steady hearth
#

Ok so I messed around with a bit and I really like it

#

But I don't know what to do now

#

Im now sure I want to install Linux

shut solar
#

did you test:
mic
speakers
headphone jack
bluetooth
video resolutions
presence of drives, the DISKS app?

shut solar
#

wifi
ethernet

steady hearth
#

Wifi works

#

I checked that, and that's about all I checked

#

Speakers work

shut solar
#

check df -h result in the terminal

steady hearth
#

I can change video resolution fine

shut solar
#

if has a line about efivars, and u got windows 11, ur good to go

steady hearth
#

I see efivars

shut solar
#

meanwhile can also run gnome-diskscommand

steady hearth
#

No wait not evifers

#

Efivarfs

shut solar
#

to view drives, etc

steady hearth
shut solar
#

dont u know what u have?

steady hearth
shut solar
#

windows

steady hearth
#

Yea windowsn11

shut solar
#

k so it's uefi-run

steady hearth
#

I run that command?

shut solar
steady hearth
#

Oh also it probably does have windows 11

#

Because I did check files and it says local disks and it has all my windows files on it

shut solar
#

the efivars was just a preliminary check to be sure u booted ur usb properly (in uefi mode)

steady hearth
#

Oh ok

#

So now do I continue with the installation?

steady hearth
shut solar
#

unmount sda if ur sure that isnt ur usb stick.

steady hearth
#

I think I booted using my USB stick

#

I turned off secure boot and it just booted into linux

shut solar
#

what's disks say?

steady hearth
shut solar
#

that drive is nvme0n1

#

what's the hdd name?

steady hearth
#

This one in the installation media it's talking about this one

shut solar
#

where do u want to install linux onto?

steady hearth
#

My E drive i emptied it out specially for Linux

shut solar
#

which is it? sda1 or sda2?

steady hearth
#

Uhhh idk

#

Can I check?

shut solar
#

well click sda2

#

then the play icon

#

then the blue link

steady hearth
#

This one right

shut solar
#

mhm

steady hearth
#

Ok I clicked the play Icon

steady hearth
#

I mean visually

shut solar
steady hearth
#

What is the blue ink 😭😭

shut solar
#

play mounts a partition, so its usable

#

then a blue text link appears

#

click, it

steady hearth
#

It opens up a file

shut solar
#

empty?

steady hearth
#

No

shut solar
#

show

steady hearth
#

This

steady hearth
shut solar
#

show disks app

steady hearth
shut solar
steady hearth
steady hearth
shut solar
#

hit stop icon for sda2

#

then the red delete icon

steady hearth
#

Done

#

Uhh are u sure?

shut solar
#

ok hit stop for sda1 also

steady hearth
#

Will it delete the files on it or the entire thing

shut solar
steady hearth
shut solar
#

yep

#

then once deleted, stop p1 and carry on

steady hearth
#

Ok I stopped the sda 1 as well

shut solar
#

choose the 'install alongside' option

#

it'll detect the space and offer a pre-write summary

steady hearth
#

On the installation media?

shut solar
#

i'll pretend u didnt ask that

#

move on with the installer

steady hearth
#

I click yes or no?

shut solar
#

yes

steady hearth
#

Ok it's loading

#

Ok now it gives me install alongside windows boot manager

#

I do that right?

shut solar
#

yes

steady hearth
#

Ok

#

What do I do now?

steady hearth
shut solar
#

one sec

steady hearth
shut solar
#

click back

steady hearth
#

Ok

shut solar
#

choose the 'something else'

steady hearth
#

Ok

shut solar
#

in the next chart, find the big free space u made in sda

#

and click +

steady hearth
shut solar
#

nope

#

sda

#

it's about 462000 MB free space

steady hearth
#

This one

#

Sda 2 right?

steady hearth
shut solar
#

no

#

close out the installer

#

it needs refreshing

steady hearth
#

Ok

shut solar
#

shut down the app and relaunch

#

get back to same point

steady hearth
#

Ok

steady hearth
shut solar
steady hearth
steady hearth
shut solar
#

yep choose it

steady hearth
#

I'm sorry I'm being really slow I don't want to mess anything up

shut solar
#

it's no longer sda2 rn

steady hearth
#

Oh

shut solar
#

it's just free space

steady hearth
#

Ur right

steady hearth
shut solar
#

once u hit + u must put use as: ext4 and set to primary, and mountpoint set to /

steady hearth
#

Like this right?

shut solar
#

good

#

press ok, then click the bottom dropdown menu for bootloader

steady hearth
#

Ok

#

Now what

steady hearth
shut solar
#

the only EFI on the system

steady hearth
#

I don't see it

steady hearth
shut solar
#

nvme0n1p1

#

then hit install now

steady hearth
#

I set my location right?

shut solar
#

yep

#

give about half hour to finish

#

do NOT encrypt home folder.

steady hearth
#

Understood

#

It's copying files

shut solar
#

restart pc when complete and remove usb as prompted

steady hearth
steady hearth
#

It's booting into linux how do I boot back into windows

shut solar
#

open system admin. app

steady hearth
#

Ok

steady hearth
shut solar
shut solar
steady hearth
shut solar
#

yep

steady hearth
#

Show the menu?

steady hearth
shut solar
#

make to save

#

*sure

steady hearth
# shut solar yep

So when I restart it will give me the option to go on Linux or windows?

steady hearth
shut solar
#

steady hearth
#

Alr

shut solar
#

steady hearth
#

Oh thank god

shut solar
#
