Old laptop
Gtx 570m

Couldn't boot normally, recovery worked and updated everything.

Resolution was 1024x768 before update

Update manager did install legacy drivers i think but after that resolution dropped to 480p

I am a first time user so no clue how to fix

patent saffron
#

so any driver u put, is tossed out next boot

boot with nomodeset, and switch to 6.8 kernel. or at least provide inxi -br result here when reach desktop in nomodeset

And that's what I was afraid of, the Nvidia 390 drivers are not available in Linux Mint 22.3 (Ubuntu 22.04)...

patent saffron
#

the wiki link in the #1295728709306683482 guide for Nvidia mentions the 'other drivers' thing

night echo
#

Ohhh imma check, let's see

patent saffron
#

still need old kernel, probably.

#

and S.B. off

night echo
patent saffron
#

after splash

#

or, you can delete splash even, and replace with nomodeset be sure spelling correct

#

@night echo booted?

night echo
patent saffron
#

yep. do clear

night echo
#

So I Have to downgrade kernel? If that's possible

patent saffron
#

wait... u showed 1/8 of the important stuff

night echo
#

Okay hold on

patent saffron
#

is this installed or live?

#

maximize terminal

night echo
#

SSD

patent saffron
#

installed

#

?

night echo
#

I was using on my pc but plugged off and on to laptop

patent saffron
#

so it's an external SSD?

night echo
#

No, just removed from pc
And put on laptop

patent saffron
#

Maximize terminal

#

do clear

night echo
#

I can format if necessary and re build mint

patent saffron
#

then do df -h ; lsblk

#

and show result

night echo
patent saffron
#

clear

#

do inxi -Sr

#

and show

night echo
patent saffron
#

cat /proc/cmdline ; free -h

#

@night echo

night echo
patent saffron
#

ok clear

#

then do apt list -i nvidia*

sonic wolf
#

Does it not work with nouveau?

patent saffron
#

thus, in safemode

night echo
#

A lot of lists showed up

patent saffron
#

show it. u can press ctrl+(minus sign) to shrink the text once

night echo
patent saffron
#

right, so DO NOT UPGRADE THE KERNEL

#

no matter what

night echo
#

Okay

patent saffron
#

decline all offers by the update managers about linux-image

#

now do the wiki thing

sonic wolf
#

@night echo When you booted to usb in order to install it, did it boot normally, or did you had to use compatibility mode?

patent saffron
night echo
night echo
patent saffron
#

and u want to use this os permanently in the laptop yes?

night echo
#

Yeah

patent saffron
#

ok at the ppa page, it mentions support for the 5xx series

#

and the associate driver package made for it

night echo
#

Okay

native pagoda
#

it's mentionned in the error message above that the required driver is 390 legacy

patent saffron
#

where??

#

OP pics show 570 error

native pagoda
sonic wolf
#

Except kernel 6.8 may still be too new for nvidia 390

patent saffron
#

hmm

patent saffron
#

and yes, 6,8 may be too new

#

in which case, use Mint 21 or MX linux 23.6

native pagoda
#

fact is GTX 570 is very hold...

#

Realase date for GTX 570 is 2011...

patent saffron
#

i see no legacy repos in the current repo sources shown. thus I dont believe they installed any legacy drivers

sonic wolf
#

I'd still try nouveau on 6.8 based on that @night echo didn't mention he had to use compatability mode when installing mint

night echo
#

I can't use driver manager, it keeps saying offline but i have connection

patent saffron
#

u can see websites load?

night echo
#

Yeah

patent saffron
#

well I don't think nomodeset is causing this

night echo
#

It was happening before as well

patent saffron
#

do you have the Mint live USB?

night echo
#

Yeah

patent saffron
#

also show result of inxi -SGx to get exact info of what's going on

native pagoda
#

Last Nvidia driver to support 500M series is indeed the 390

#

on linux platform at least

night echo
#

No drivers needed it says when searched USB

patent saffron
#

dude, show the inxi i said

night echo
patent saffron
#

22.0 wilma

#

ok. well if u want to live boot a wilma ISO in regular (non-compat) mode

#

u will see if nouveau works here or not.

#

i think not

night echo
#

Okay i will boot usb

native pagoda
#

Nvidia-390: The 390 driver is supported for Linux Mint 21 versions when you use the 5.15 LTS kernel. The 390 driver is not supported in Linux Mint 22 versions and you must use the open-source xorg-nouveau driver.

night echo
#

Ohh usb boot showed 1080p

patent saffron
#

u at desktop?

#

maximize terminal, and show inxi -SGx

night echo
patent saffron
night echo
patent saffron
#

this is a zena ISO

#

anyway, you're on nouveau here.

#

if u want to reinstall, choose erase and install

night echo
#

Yeah sure it's fine

patent saffron
#

or something else, if u have other important data partitions

#

oh actually this is BIOS only

#

so do a proper thing.

#

@night echo open the Disks app

#

check if u have any other important shit

#

on this SSD

#

if not, go to its dots menu, and click 'format drive' and choose msdos/mbr type , quick erase

night echo
patent saffron
#

128 GB device of course

#

check all partitions

night echo
#

Its single partition

patent saffron
#

show full pic of window

#

not maximized

night echo
patent saffron
#

...

sonic wolf
#

Select the ssd

patent saffron
#

what the fk does that show?

#

click the drive man

night echo
#

Oh sorry

native pagoda
#

oh, that old MBR

patent saffron
#

you plan to just use this on this old laptop right?

#

i presume it's an old laptop.

night echo
#

Yea this SSD will stay here

native pagoda
#

ah no, it's an EFI ? why creating an extended partition...

night echo
#

2012 model laptop

patent saffron
#

what's inxi -M show?

#

yeah i'd stay with legacy install.

night echo
patent saffron
#

dots menu: format drive> msdos partition table

#

then install zena with 'something else' options

sonic wolf
#

Why? Erase disk should work

native pagoda
#

maybe to force legacy MBR

patent saffron
#

or maybe not

#

but yeah, to force legacy install

night echo
#

Should I format now?

patent saffron
sonic wolf
#

I don't think install program changes MBR to GPT or vice versa

night echo
#

Yes

patent saffron
#

ok so disks shows all free space now for sda, yes?

#

and partitioning style in the top lines, line 4 i think, says master boot record yes?

night echo
patent saffron
#

some stuff is mounted

#

stop all partitions with a play icon in them

native pagoda
#

(I find Gparted way clearer for such operation)

patent saffron
#

we'll see

sonic wolf
#

partition 5 is mounted, based on previous screenshot

patent saffron
#

pick swap, and hit the stop button

#

to turn off swap

night echo
#

Okay now it formatted

sonic wolf
#

Show new screenshot

night echo
patent saffron
#

hit cancel

#

do not make anything on that

#

close and follow link above.

night echo
#

Okay

sonic wolf
#

.... just start install program and choose "erase disk and install mint" when asked. I'm pretty sure that'll work just fine

night echo
#

Oki

patent saffron
night echo
#

Now finished

#

@patent saffron @sonic wolf @native pagoda

Thank you all 💙

Things seems working

patent saffron
#

mind to show the DISKS app?

night echo
#

Sure

patent saffron
#

im curious to see what the thing did to your disk,

#

using a legacy boot, and auto-install

night echo
patent saffron
#

also, do note - do not expect any kind of miracles from nouveau driver, or super performance

night echo
#

Also discord is banned here so if I can use goodbye dpi on linux that'd be great but that's for later

patent saffron
#

see @sonic wolf

#

it did make it GPT

night echo
#

I'll mostly using this for light stuff

patent saffron
#

and adds the BIOS BOOT spicy area

#

luckily this computer obliges that

sonic wolf
night echo
#

💀

patent saffron
#

also, check over your firefox Settings. all of them.

#

customize to your sense.

sonic wolf
#

Just don't expect any game performance with the current driver @night echo Only basic stuff

night echo
#

I won't force anything demanding, because this laptop's GPU was dead already.

I literally cooked in the oven to bring back to life and it magically worked 🤣
