Hi, I'm a noob at this, but when I tried to install Linux Mint, after selecting "Erase disk and install Linux Mint", Wait for the installation to finish, restart, remove the USB drive I was using, and press "enter" when the program prompted me to. My laptop (Lenovo Ideapad) then enters a reboot loop, and in the upper left corner of The screen displays the text "Restart System" every time it turns on and off. Please help, I've been trying to fix it for hours. crypepe

Any information you need about what I used or did to install it, just let me know and I'll tell you. I would greatly appreciate your help.

grave mesa
#

Also, boot on USB again, and instead or starting installer, go into Menu > Administration > Gparted
In Gparted, go to View menu and select "Show device information" and take a photo or screenshot of your internal hard drive setup

polar nymph
#

ie - UEFI-BIOS: Security section > Reset factory keys (aka clear all Secure Boot variables/keys)

plush nymph
#

Okay, I'll share the pics

grave mesa
#

4x ubuntu in BIOS priority, you installed it several times ?

plush nymph
#

Yes, in several desperate attempts

polar nymph
#

choose 'restore factory keys' in the security section

#

later can remove the excess ubuntu entries

#

only later.

#

much later.

plush nymph
polar nymph
#

that part is fine.

#

go to BIOS.

plush nymph
#

Okay

polar nymph
plush nymph
#

ready

#

What's next??

polar nymph
#

u did above?

plush nymph
#

Yes

polar nymph
#

F10

plush nymph
#

Okay

polar nymph
#

works now?

plush nymph
#

Do I do everything again?

polar nymph
#

good

#

hit enter

#

wait wait

#

u see that said OEM install THAT IS USB STICK

#

that is not real GRUB. it's the LIVE GRUB

plush nymph
#

oh

polar nymph
#

so restart, no usb.

plush nymph
#

I already removed the USB, but it went back to the loop of turning off and on.

polar nymph
#

hold power key down

#

so it's fully shut off for a while

#

did you clear the factory keys, yes or no? and save and exit BIOS before?

grave mesa
#

should put the USB after all the ubunu entries in boot priority or remove USB

polar nymph
#

ok yeah do what Sed just suggested

#

as a matter of fact, you can maybe delete some of those excess ubuntu entries from within BIOS if there is some edit mode (bbs priorities)

#

did you get it, @plush nymph ?

plush nymph
#

I'm trying to turn on my laptop now, but the screen is stuck off and the power button light is on.

polar nymph
#

#📘wiki message << BIOS and BOOT MENU key codes

#

see the chart

plush nymph
#

Okay, I'm in the BIOS now.

polar nymph
#

oh ok good

#

go to the Boot section

#

let's try this for now. put USB flash drive to top of priority list

#

and then show the pic of entire screen

plush nymph
polar nymph
#

ok. now save and exit. but don't have USB inside.

#

if it still doesn't work, then you'll put USB stick in and restart to the live desktop please

plush nymph
polar nymph
#

you can pull it sure

plush nymph
#

It didn't work, it went back into the loop. Let me plug in the USB and reset it.

polar nymph
#

in the loop it still said to 'reset computer' ?

#

we'll try to remove the excess entries.. from the live desktop soon

plush nymph
polar nymph
#

yep

plush nymph
#

I'm already on the desktop

polar nymph
#

i only saw the TPM clear thing also but was really wary to touch it. @grave mesa what do you think?

polar nymph
#

run lsblk -o name,model,fstype,partuuid

polar nymph
#

then:
efibootmgr

#

and show complete result pic

grave mesa
#

I think it's an ubuntu entry with wrong partition UUID

#

so, remove extra ubuntu entries in UEFI, and do a boot repair

polar nymph
#

yes it might be. we shall soon see how many other drives here

plush nymph
polar nymph
#

yeah type the two things... i thought u were done already. so slow

#

type the EXACTLY

plush nymph
plush nymph
polar nymph
#

dash symbol

#

or minus sign

grave mesa
#

and o letter

polar nymph
#

letter o (english )

grave mesa
#

(latin letter)

polar nymph
#

lsblk -o name,model,fstype,partuuid

#

efibootmgr

plush nymph
#

I press the "-" key, but it puts a "/" in the terminal

polar nymph
#

oh .ffkkkk

#

go to the Keyboard in system settings

grave mesa
#

indeed, need to change keyboard layout

polar nymph
#

fix your keyboard.

#

FFS

#

or sign in to discord on firefox and copy/paste those two things

polar nymph
#

paste is right-click in terminal

grave mesa
#

or middle click with the part to copy selected

polar nymph
#

confusing, sed

#

rephrase that

#

just say middle-click in terminal to paste

plush nymph
grave mesa
#

remove ,efibootmgr

#

it's a second command

plush nymph
#

okay

polar nymph
#

no , erase efibootmgr and last comma

plush nymph
grave mesa
#

enter

polar nymph
#

then do efibootmgr

#

show ONE FINAL PIC

#

complete result

plush nymph
polar nymph
#

that's unexpected

#

try just lsblk

plush nymph
#

The same error occurred

grave mesa
#

USB problem

plush nymph
#

Do I have to boot from the USB again?

polar nymph
#

wait

#

did u leave usb firmly in?

#

which u should the whole time in live session

plush nymph
#

The USB is still connected

polar nymph
#

run this

#

gnome-disks

#

or find it in the start menu> Accessories> Disks

plush nymph
#

Okay, except I had to go back to the desktop because the screen went black and only the cursor was visible.

polar nymph
#

ok reboot and DONT TOUCH USB

#

not even breathe on it

plush nymph
#

Yes, don't worry, the USB is still there.

polar nymph
#

Make sure it's in a TIGHT port

grave mesa
#

also change USB port maybe

#

because it's clear that USB had failures

#

and it's time tu suspect that installation failled because of USB

#

What USB stick it is ? true USB stick or some SD card adapter ?

plush nymph
polar nymph
#

show pic of the Disks app open

#

complete window, not maximized

plush nymph
#

It won't open, should I restart?

polar nymph
#

omg...

#

i told u that five minutes ago!!!!

#

come onnnn

plush nymph
#

It's because it had restarted, but it doesn't open after the restart.

grave mesa
plush nymph
#

Yeah

grave mesa
#

And Gparted ?

plush nymph
#

I already restarted the laptop again

#

let me see

#

I was finally able to open disks

grave mesa
#

you mean, it finally open, but very late ?

plush nymph
#

No, I had to restart.

grave mesa
#

wow, that is not normal...

plush nymph
plush nymph
polar nymph
#

try lsblk now

#

and efibootmgr

grave mesa
#

Actually lsblk -f should be sufficient

plush nymph
polar nymph
#

lsblk -o name,partuuid

grave mesa
polar nymph
#

i did. corrected.

#

@plush nymph FIX YOUR KEYBOARD

#

this is VERY CRITICAL

plush nymph
polar nymph
#

go to start menu> preferences> Keyboard

#

only entry 0005 is valid

#

FIX KEYBOARD FIRST

#

then delete the rest

#

sudo efibootmgr -b 0 -B

#

sudo efibootmgr -b 1 -B

#

sudo efibootmgr -b 2 -B

#

sudo efibootmgr -b 3 -B

#

sudo efibootmgr -b 4 -B

#

0005 should be the first one in the boot order (it is now, anyway)

plush nymph
polar nymph
#

ooof

grave mesa
#

Well... how old is your USB stick ?

plush nymph
#

one year old

grave mesa
#

there is something wrong, either with the USB stick or your computer USB ports

polar nymph
#

or the nvme drive or its connection

grave mesa
#

pretty sure it's USB

polar nymph
#

make sure usb is in very tight port. or use different live usb

plush nymph
#

I would have to buy another USB , but I already tried both ports on my laptop before.

grave mesa
#

cable ?!

plush nymph
#

the translator

polar nymph
#

i have a feeling it should already boot to entry 0005, but there's too many old listings, maybe why the bios insists on resetting machine

grave mesa
#

(don't tell me HP please)

polar nymph
#

lenovo

#

but anyway...

#

im done for today

grave mesa
#

let see in BIOS if there is some USB option, like USB 2.0 enable...

plush nymph
#

I can't find anything

polar nymph
#

the only other "quick" option would be a pure legacy live-boot, reformat nvme to msdos partition table, and do a pure legacy install as per #1295728709306683482

#

and then choose the 'nvme' in the boot priorities in bios after the legacy-mode complete reinstallation

grave mesa
#

no what he can do, is going to BIOS and set the last ubuntu entry on top

polar nymph
#

efibootmgr says 0005 is in position 1

grave mesa
#

or trying to swapt ubuntu entires...

#

but the fact that USB did this tell nothing good about installation itself

polar nymph
#

or make a live USB with puppy linux. (it runs entirely in RAM) .. then delete the five entries I wrote earlier using the special sudo efibootmgr command and then try to boot from the only remaining Ubuntu entry in BIOS. (no usb ofc)

plush nymph
#

So, do I have to use Puppy Linux and delete the 5 entries that were created?

polar nymph
#

can try it sure.

#

I figure you have another computer to make live USB with puppy linux

grave mesa
#

could it be a power save option that turn USB off automatically ? is the computer plugged to grid ?

polar nymph
#

this is official page, but the link for the full ISO library is down right now.

polar nymph
#

however the IBIBLIO link does work

grave mesa
#

never do sensitive things without power cable

polar nymph
#

should always do important things with power from mains electricity

plush nymph
#

Originally, I had installed Linux Mint with the laptop connected

grave mesa
#

keep cable connected and retry commands

plush nymph
grave mesa
#

pretty sure the USB problem is related to power cable

polar nymph
#

and use power cable.

grave mesa
#

I think if it plug power cable, don't need to do a puppyOS anymore, it should properly keep USB powered

plush nymph
#

Do I rewrite the commands?

#

I already connected it

polar nymph
#

well... first u have to boot a good working live environment

#

did u put power now?

grave mesa
polar nymph
#

I only suggested puppy linux because it boots from USB, but once booted, it runs entirely in RAM. (usb can even be taken out of port)

grave mesa
plush nymph
grave mesa
#

ok, type sudo efibootmgr -b 0 -B

#

take care of case sensitive, there small b and big B, this is intended

plush nymph
grave mesa
#

sudo efibootmgr -b 1 -B

#

and then, successively :
sudo efibootmgr -b 2 -B
sudo efibootmgr -b 3 -B
sudo efibootmgr -b 4 -B

polar nymph
#

it's also trying to boot the shimx64

#

thus maybe an issue with the keys

#

boot repair might fix that with the advanced options , using the 'standard grub'

#

thus making grubx64.efi the default efi file

plush nymph
grave mesa
#

I think a simple boot repair should be ok

grave mesa
#

search "boor repair" in menu

#

don't update, we don't care

#

select recommended repair

polar nymph
#

i think it's better advanced repair

#

to be sure in its first tab it uses STANDARD grub

grave mesa
#

well, lets try like that

plush nymph
#

So, should I continue with boot repair?

polar nymph
#

start menu> admin. boot repair> advanced

plush nymph
#

It won't let me open it, and it doesn't have an icon. Should I restart?

grave mesa
#

ok, so USB stick is an issue, even with power cable

#

It seem miraculous you achieved to install Mint

plush nymph
#

I'm surprised then, well, in Boot Repair it tells me "Do you want the software automatically updated now? yes/no", I click "no" right?

polar nymph
plush nymph
#

I came back, I had some personal things to take care of, a window popped up with two options and advanced options

#

I clicked on advanced options and GRUB options appeared

grave mesa
plush nymph
#

Okay, do I click 'apply', or do I need to do something else?

polar nymph
#

wait

#

doublecheck 2nd tab.

#

show it

plush nymph
#

Okay, nothing else to check, or change?

grave mesa
#

go

plush nymph
grave mesa
#

shutdown computer, unplug USB, and try normal boot

plush nymph
#

It went back into the loop

polar nymph
#

clear the TPM

grave mesa
#

you don't even see the grub menu ?

plush nymph
grave mesa
#

Well... go in BIOS setup and do what Stunner suggest

polar nymph
#

also nvram locked....

#

so try every ubuntu in the list after.

#

cuz im sure they didnt even get deleted.

plush nymph
polar nymph
#

ok it did delete them. at least one thing works

#

clear intel PTT

plush nymph
#

Okay, ready

polar nymph
#

also put the Secure boot thing to 'reset to setup mode'

plush nymph
polar nymph
#

ok but HURY UP!!!!

#

DO IT

plush nymph
#

Yes, I already clicked "yes", I saved but I'm still stuck in the loop

grave mesa
plush nymph
#

Right

grave mesa
#

show what you have in that

plush nymph
grave mesa
#

well it's disabled so...

#

in boot disable PXE boot

#

(doubt it's the issue, but anyway)

plush nymph
#

Okay, I've already disabled PXE boot

grave mesa
#

ok, show me Configuration main page

plush nymph
grave mesa
#

ok... save and exit

#

if it still loop, boot to USB and open Disks

plush nymph
#

It went back into the loop, but I'm already on disks.

grave mesa
#

select your internal disk

#

then select first partition, the Fat32 one

#

and click the "play" (triangle) button

#

a link should appear for mount point

#

click the link and show me

plush nymph
grave mesa
#

wrong place

#

go back to disks

#

I said to select your internal disk

plush nymph
grave mesa
#

INTERNAL DISK

plush nymph
grave mesa
#

Go in EFI

#

Then Ubuntu

plush nymph
grave mesa
#

open grub.cfg

#

and show me

plush nymph
#

I click on it, but it doesn't open

grave mesa
#

double-click

#

or right-click > open

plush nymph
#

Yes, it still doesn't open anything, even with a double click or a right click.

grave mesa
#

... what to say... buy an USB stick ?

plush nymph
#

Yes, I'm thinking of doing everything again.

#

with another USB

polar nymph
#

i have fast idea

#

on nvme this only takes 4 minutes

grave mesa
#

if you plan to buy it, choose Kingston or Sandisk one... I recommend Kingston over Sandisk, but at least, invest in some good thing

grave mesa
plush nymph
polar nymph
#

legacy install

plush nymph
polar nymph
#

reboot, to to bios

#

yes disable uefi boot mode

#

then boot usb up

plush nymph
#

Did I also change the UEFI FIRST?

polar nymph
#

if cant disable uefi completely, then move 'usb legacy' to top of boot list

#

go to bios now

plush nymph
polar nymph
#

once you've booted in legacy then we test something

#

change the 'uefi first'

#

to 'legacy first'

plush nymph
#

Okay, should I restart from the USB?

polar nymph
#

show bios

#

to confirm how it is. i want to see

plush nymph
polar nymph
#

ok move usb to top

#

then save/exit

plush nymph
polar nymph
#

yes top one

plush nymph
polar nymph
#

open gparted,

#

choose nvme0n1 drive

#

got it?

plush nymph
polar nymph
#

ok idc that box

#

go to DEVICE menu

#

choose ; create new partition table

grave mesa
#

!

polar nymph
#

as msdos style

grave mesa
#

ok you want to install it in MBR...

polar nymph
#

yes

plush nymph
polar nymph
#

ya hit apply

plush nymph
polar nymph
#

whne it's done, close gparted

#

run the installer app.

#

choose the 'something else' option

#

dont put anything AT ALL for encryption nor secure boot

plush nymph
#

Do I connect to the internet?

polar nymph
#

when u are at the something else thing u will see chart. no internet

#

no codecs

plush nymph
#

It's in Spanish, but it's the "more options" section.

polar nymph
#

continue

#

in the chart, find FREE SPACE

#

under /dev/nvme0n1

plush nymph
polar nymph
#

click the free space, then click +

plush nymph
polar nymph
#

click mountpoint and set to /

plush nymph
polar nymph
#

yes . OK

plush nymph
polar nymph
#

click 'install now'

plush nymph
polar nymph
#

when it says about no EFI, just choose continue

plush nymph
#

continue?

polar nymph
#

continue

#

then dont touch or disturb usb AT ALL

plush nymph
#

Okay

polar nymph
#

finish your user setup. NO ENCRYPTION

#

After 5 minutes, restart, go to bios > BOOT SECTION

#

put NVME drive to TOP

plush nymph
#

Should I do it normally?

grave mesa
#

yes

polar nymph
#

fill that in. i'll check here in 5 minutes

#

done?

plush nymph
#

continues copying files

#

There's just one issue, more personal than anything else: I absolutely have to go out and take care of some personal matters, and I'll be gone for a few hours. Will anything happen, or will the process be ruined??

polar nymph
#

shouldn't be as long as you have computer plugged to good, reliable power. But isn't it finished yet? this is nvme.

#

only supposed to take like 5 or 6 minutes

polar nymph
plush nymph
#

I'll leave the laptop plugged in and everything, nobody will move it until I get back, there shouldn't be a problem.

polar nymph
#

also, do you have Android smartphone?

plush nymph
#

yes

polar nymph
#

yeah leave the computer on good electricity

#

with android app 'etchdroid' you can make a special bootable USB called 'SUPERGRUB2"

#

this bootable 'supergrub' , you start computer with USB in, and then choose in orange supergrub menu : Boot manually. then it will find linux.

#

but you do need possibly the On-the-Go adapter cable to connect USB to phone to make with etchdroid

#
  • that's only incase you still get that stupid boot loop issue, even with legacy install.
polar nymph
#

any news on this, @plush nymph ?

plush nymph
#

Hi, I'm still outside my house, I left my laptop plugged in.

polar nymph
#

ok

plush nymph
#

Hi, I'm back. Fortunately, the installation went well. Do I need to restart and then access the BIOS?

plush nymph
#

I know they're probably asleep or something

#

BUT IT WORKED!!

#

THANK YOU SO MUCH

#

Thank you so much, thank you for your help and for being patient with me

polar nymph
polar nymph
#

finally got it in legacy mode install, @grave mesa

polar nymph
plush nymph
#

Swap does not appear

polar nymph
#

lol

#

or just run top in terminal. it should say MiB Swap: and some amount for Total

plush nymph
#

It's the one called "MiB Intercambio:"

polar nymph
#

good. it's all set then.

polar nymph
polar nymph
#

and install your multimedia codecs from the 'sound and video' category, since you didn't do so at installation time.
